I’m 45, so probably pretty old compared to most guys on here. I’ve been racing bikes most of my life and got into MB racing around 18 after growing up in BMX. I like videos like this. I did many races not just on a hard tail, but no suspension at all. I remember when front suspension first came out and having a conversation with someone why I was sticking to rigid forks cause “there’s nothing I can’t do on this that I can do with front suspension.” I remember getting a front suspension bike finally and being able to push technical sections harder and faster. I got my first full suspension bike around 2001 when living in San Diego and that was a big game changer. Just last week I purchased a new bike...a hardtail. After knee surgery and 4 shoulder surgeries, I can’t ride like I used to, but I still like to get out and tear it up in old guy fashion. I think one of the biggest difference is, in my age, we didn’t have all this stuff. So you learned how to ride and take technical rocky downhill sections by picking good lines and working your V brakes. I see so many guys now relying on technology and less riding skills. But in all fairness, the technology has allowed guys to push the limits way beyond what we were doing. Some of the stuff I see now is mind blowing. I remember when a tabletop was a huge deal. When the old BMX movie RAD came out and we saw a guy doing a backflip, it blew our minds! It’s fun to see guys get out on hard tails like this video. Good job my friend
I tottaly agree. I'm 15 and have recently started a mountain biking club at my highschool. We all ride hardtail and have even had some people quit because they would refuse to ride without full suspention. I'm glad others admit that your capability is only limited by your skills.

Awesome example of having fun with the bike you have. Nothing pains me more than someone apologizing for "only having a hardtail" like it's any less of a bike. Some of the best rides I've had we're on a hardtail. Thank you for helping kill this myth!
Well, a sub 9kg XC Hardtail with XC tires, rims and a 100mm XC fork would probably not survive these Jumps and rock gardens. But with an aggressive hardtail like the one in the Video, there really shoulnt be a limit to your riding
It's true an XC bike would be pretty uncomfortable smashing down a-line. Still, there are people I've gone riding with who had a really nice hardtail and they felt sheepish being on a HT next to someone on a FS bike. 😔
@TyrannoKoenigsegg That's why I upped my fork's travel to 120 mm, added more oil to the oil bath, and am currently running at 15% sag. It climbs like a mountain goat and descends like one too. Update: now running 1mm of sag
When I'm not riding my mountain bike im either at work, working out, or watching videos about riding mountain bikes 😊. My wife doesn't understand either
Gladly my wife understands the joy I find in Mountainbikes! Often we ride natural trails together - but she’s on her horse while I ride my bike! Super fun to do it together, whe usually have 3-4 rides a week, which sums up to about 200km in a month. Not that super much, but I think through riding (literally riding for my wife) together I get way more km as if I’d do it all by myself. Actually I’m pretty proud of the 2500km we ride in a year. I lost over 20kg through this and get so much more physical training. Also it’s super handy to have a horse with saddlebags with you since it can carry all the tools, drinks and food. No need for a backpack, just get yourself a horse I guess😂 A bit offtopic I guess since I mostly ride my Nukeproof Mega 290 instead of my old Kona Stuff Hardtail, but hey🤷🏻♂️
Benjamin K yeah that’s something to think about! Maybe if you’d give her a good explanation she’ll understand what’s a good bike and what’s not. Nobody is born with that knowledge and has to start somewhere!

I'm loving this, it brings back memories of doing all this type of thing on my DMR trailstar back in the day. My riding group all had hardtails and it didn't stop us from smashing all the trails/jumps we could. I was never as good rider as you but had a blast.
I did the Whistler's A-Line many times with my hardtail 120 mm (agressive one with 66 headangle). That was not the fastest lap compare to my enduro or the rental downhill the day before... but definetely the most fun descents of all my week ! Love you guys, from Quebec, Canada
I'm slowly saving to get a new bike and finally get off my very old short travel full sus xc bike, and until recently I was thinking it's get like a 160ish full sus AM or enduro bike. But lately I've actually been thinking of getting a hardtail instead! These videos have been driving me that direction, since it seems like a hardtail would force me to learn better skill and technique. I don't want to let the tech compensate for a lack of skill, which is why I switched to flats after riding clips for a long time.
If you are on a budget a hardtail is 100% the way to go, it will help hone your skills to a point but when you get on a full suss you will be flying! and yes , ditch the clips flats for life 🤙🏽🤙🏽
I do want to ride bike parks in the future, but the closest ones to me are about a 4 hour drive away, so for at least a year or more that won't be a thing, really. I think riding park will be more of an occasional thing anyway, I'll probably still spend most of my time riding trail. And all my local trails are short downhill sections with long climbs, so I think the efficiency of a hardtail is looking appealing. There's also a recently built pump track and dirt jump spot that I found, so I think again the hardtail may be better. It's a hard choice! I love the confidence that comes with a nice plush full sus bike, but I think that ultimately I want that confidence to come from my own skill, not the hardware I'm on. After a bit of research, too, it does look like hardtails are the way to go on a budget, which I am on. Seems like I could spend less overall and still get really nice components. Thanks for the replies! Anyone have any favorite aggressive hardtail recommendations?
Loved the video and Blake's skills. I've only ever owned 26" hardtails (30 years) and when I finally rode a full-sus some years ago it felt like cheating. I like 'keeping it real' with an older-style bike and I can get down the trails faster than everyone else I ride with. :)
I own a hardtail, and i can do everything with it,from commuting on roads comfortably to going berserk on trails. It looks cool too!!And much more affordable and simple design.
I really appreciated this vid. As not only were able to show off a bit, coach, but was brutially honest. The grunts and oofs on the tech and rough stuff is a familiar and honest sound. And admitting that got a puncture, a ding, a tear here and there shows it is REALLY like out there.
Thank you Blake and GMBN for the awesome Hardtail video! I love hardtails, please continue to make more hardtail videos! Blake is such an awesome presenter, so much fun to watch, great at explaining techniques!
I love watching the differences between Blake and Sam. Blake gives what feels like a more realistic experience for us casual riders while Sam is where we would all love to be. Also laugh to see Blake going down these trails with all his sounds of discomfort and Sam goes down them on a cheap bike with no shocks what so ever and it's "this is the dream man!".

Thanks! Makes me realize how skilled I may actually be. No full suspension just rocking the hardtail on stuff just like this! Still working up to the big jumps though.
Great vid gmbn, Blake is absolutely killing it out there! I can never get enough of watching this man shred, and then shred some more. Love videos like this. It proper destroys this whole thing with you need fs for this and that. Don't know about anyone else but my HT always has more fun levels than most. In fact I went back to a HT from a FS.
Yo! Blake! Thanks man! I do love my hard tail, but I’ve just started MTB journey. Drop post is game changer. In 05-2020 I bought Scott Aspect 940 as my first MTB bike... I hate it. 7 times on service. I heard that I forced too much... every part was changed. So I bought Cannondale Trail 1 SE in November. After 300km I can say it’s not perfect, but it’s amazingly good! I need to practice skills and technic... only this. You guys makes me confident to try and do more and more. Thanks 🙏🏻
Gabe Taylor How do those trails feel on a hardtail vs. a full squish? I’m wondering because I am thinking about getting a hardtail as my next bike, and I’d like to know how they feel.
Scott Ridley the cross country trails feel fine. The downhill parks are absolutely murder to you whole body, especially your fingers and your wrists, but it is still super fun. Double black tech trails are good but you just cannot go very fast like people on full squishes do. You have to go slow and pick your line. If you don’t, you will pop tires and break equipment.
This video is amazing! Blake, you have some serious talent to ride those trails on a hard tail. Makes me fall in love with my hard tail all over again. Very inspiring!
HELL YEAH, I ride hardtail all the time because i find its double the fun. you would be surprised how much you learn about taking certain lines over other lines. trying to find the fast smoother line, with out holding back and hitting all features that your skill level can handle. when riding a hardtail, this is the best part of the experience. great video i loved it
Great video, demonstrating how the correct body position can make a hard tale so much more capable in my opinion. This bloke is an exceptional rider by the looks of this video. Unfortunately us mere mortals need all the help we can get to ride that stuff.
I've been a BMXer since I was a kid. At 37 years old I finally caved in and got my first mountain bike (except for a few old rigid bikes I've made single speeds for cruising on) and went with a hardtail Commencal. It was delivered today when I was at work and I assembled it just about an hour ago. I sat down and opened YouzTubez and this is the first suggested video. Haha Now I'm really excited!
I love hardtails. One thing is the simplicity of servicing and maintaining it. Second, because I'm into XC, the full suspension is not that important. Third; once you learn to drive it and know exactly what to do to get your feet act as rear suspension... you really don't need full floater. In XC. But even for me, I'd choose full suspension for bike parks just because I'm not Blake.
when you get to a certain skill level, the only difference between a hardtail and a FS is comfort and how much abuse your body goes through! I can keep up with my full sus mates on my hardtail, and although I used to race downhill bikes, the best race result I ever got was on a hardtail. I'd like to have a full sus to try hitting some XXL jumps (under/overshooting a jump on a FS is way more forgiving) but for the rest of the time, I love my HT and see no reason to get rid of it! Great video!
I'm so glad I watched this! Buddies don't get why I like HT bikes, but as a large rider I love the way they climb and how they push me to become a better rider :)
Congratulations and thank you very much, I have a bike without rear suspension and I have done some trails but you have shown me that I can do it in all safety
Blake is my personal favourite hardtail hero! Also, no one really sports a brand sponsorship for me quite like Blake... the drool I get for them Nukeproof Scout’s is real. I mean, EVERY time a GMBN video mentioning “hardtail” plays, I perk up to see that aggressive wild beast in action... TOTAL Pavlov’s Dog response
Depends if you want a down hill bike your basics limiting yourself to one track with a trail bike your not limited other than the breaking point of a frame for using a trail Bike as down hill bike but hey 3k for a bike that can do loads of tracks and may possibly snap is a better option than a pure bred 4K bike for down hill no thanks I am looking into this these bikes are slightly built differently test they can go on alternative trails but at a cost of breaking a bike if you push it too hard for the wrong purpos
I love when people say. “ I’m thinking I would like to progress to a full squish”. Should be the other way around. Ridden both quite a bit. Hard tails are just more fun.
This vid was a life saver as I was thinking that I'd have to spend grands for a full sus and a hard tail, but now I know for sure that I,m buying a Whyte 2020 905 HT. I always knew that the hard tail was more involving. Long live the hard tail!!
Still I'm always confused as to why people are unsure of hardtails? You have BMX guys jumping on little ridged bikes.. You have dirt jumpers jumping on smaller hardtails..I don't understand the questioning and doubt of mountain bike hardtails.. They are probably more capable than FS.. Less flex. Less flimsy pivot points to snap.. Less money.. Same quality frame materials and components as fs..
mattd yeah growing up riding bmx is a benefit I think. You get any suspension and choice of gears as an adult and it’s like this is the best thing ever!
less money does not make it more capable. You would only notice a modern full sus flex if you were one of the fastest in the world. Pivot points really dont snap. Have you ever ridden a full sus? Try riding a hardtail down fort william world cup track and youll see what the fuss is about.

Double black tech trails are good but you just cannot go very fast like people on full squishes do. You have to go slow and pick your line. If you don’t, you will pop tires and break equipment.
Thank you!
Gabe - Did you put a longer fork on your Chameleon?
That’s me at the beginning! In the white shirt number 3! Haha
This is what i was always looking for❤❤❤
I love Blake’s positive attitude and how much he actually enjoys riding no matter what bike he is using
This video is amazing! Blake, you have some serious talent to ride those trails on a hard tail. Makes me fall in love with my hard tail all over again. Very inspiring!
HELL YEAH, I ride hardtail all the time because i find its double the fun. you would be surprised how much you learn about taking certain lines over other lines. trying to find the fast smoother line, with out holding back and hitting all features that your skill level can handle. when riding a hardtail, this is the best part of the experience. great video i loved it
Yes lads another banger of a vid 🔥💥🔥🔥
Legend has it that Blake has never cased a jump.
Not on video, yet. Sounds like he had a bail at some point, and a bit of a bonk to himself at the end of this one
Some say. He was born in a sling carried by an enormous pelican.
He did at dark fest but you should’ve of seen the size of the jump
Some say he's converting all his bikes to fixed gear ; and that he wears MX kit to bed ! All we know is that he is called Blake!
Haha
Now I'm really excited!
I did enjoy the video Blake, thank you for making it.
Glad to see Gordon Ramsay expanding his content!
Lol. Only Blake is Blake.😁
when you get to a certain skill level, the only difference between a hardtail and a FS is comfort and how much abuse your body goes through!
Hardtrail can beat anything 🤘
I love hardtrail!
Not anything
This is my favorite mtb video of all time! I also ride a GT hard trail!!!
He's riding a Nukeproof Scout
Blake said hes entering Rampage on a hardtail this year
Ski Dude blake entering a XC race this year
Rampage is an invitational... Blake isnt good enough by far.
@@Wesrl XC on a DH
Dude! You smash all the rocks with that hardtail! You amazed me! You are a pro, dude! Bravo! Bravo! 👍👍👍
Just bought a 97 Specialize Stumpjumper. Gonna bring it back from the dead. New to the sport. This video gave me some inspiration and motivation.
BLAKE IS FKING DOPE!
Most appealing Presenter and rider. Holy skills
Also I'm a hard tail fan!
I love hard tails, they make the ride so pure and the trail has more feel to it.
I went years ago on my sasquatch with my buddy was great 👍
Congratulations and thank you very much, I have a bike without rear suspension and I have done some trails but you have shown me that I can do it in all safety
I love the looks you’re getting from everyone 😂,cool content!
Kids you don't need a 4k DH rig to hit this place, this is proof of that. You might he going slower but you'll have the respect that is for certain!
Ha ha - i have 4k into my hardtail and it isn't carbon 😉
I have a $400.00 Walmart bike I wanna take their! I'm doing some work to it though. New forks, tires, drivetrain and breaks.
Depends if you want a down hill bike your basics limiting yourself to one track with a trail bike your not limited other than the breaking point of a frame for using a trail
Bike as down hill bike but hey 3k for a bike that can do loads of tracks and may possibly snap is a better option than a pure bred 4K bike for down hill no thanks I am looking into this these bikes are slightly built differently test they can go on alternative trails but at a cost of breaking a bike if you push it too hard for the wrong purpos
4:25 is my fave part🔥🤙
I have now restored faith in my hardtail, major upgrading I am going do this Christmas. It’s gonna be a brand new bike.
You are an inspiration to all of us HT riders!
12:10 Ah, that's not so ba.. oh arghhh!
I am getting Trek Roscoe 8 (2019 model) in a month, can´t wait !!
How’s your bike been
@@FifthOfNovember_Original I love it still, I am riding it all year long be it trails or general commuting, really satisfied with my choice.
Nice bro! I just got one 2 days ago and they are AWESOME! Have fun on the trails mate!
Nice,had some nice jumps🔥
I love when people say. “ I’m thinking I would like to progress to a full squish”. Should be the other way around. Ridden both quite a bit. Hard tails are just more fun.
I love my 2021 Giant Talon 1 ! I love this hardtail!💪
sam pilgrim: want to do ramp.....
Blake: HELL NO!! rampage is out of the question on the hardtail.
Free bike challenge
Going to take my hardtail up to mammoth next weekend. Should be fun.
Have you rode Northstar on a hardtail? I've been hesitant to bring mine.
That was cool mate. Proper skilful biking. I'd love to be able to handle my orange hardtail like that. Mint👍
This vid was a life saver as I was thinking that I'd have to spend grands for a full sus and a hard tail, but now I know for sure that I,m buying a Whyte 2020 905 HT. I always knew that the hard tail was more involving. Long live the hard tail!!
Blake's laugh at 4:39 following the big rock drop is 100% a mood!
I've never known the comfort of a full suspension, so a hardtail has always been doing everything for me.
Full suspension bikes are for benginers o downhill a real biker takes the chalange to go hardtail
@@robertrapa759 beginners?? Im a begginer and have a hardtail that front suspension doesn t even work
@@robertrapa759 Does that come in English?
@@robertrapa759 So you're calling anyone that rides a full-suspension a beginner?
Love it. Keep up the amazing videos.👍
Thanks Matthew!
Blake needs to race XC with those descending skill all he need to do now is get the up hill part down
Starting to appreciate my hardtail even more cause of this video. Much love ❤️
I feel more confident to buy a hardtail now, thank you!
12:10 "Oh that's not so.... uhg uhg ahga!" lmoa
Same quality frame materials and components as fs..
mikieson do you ride full suspension
mikieson ya nailed!
I have had the same thought and I think it's because alot of folks didn't grow up riding everything on HTs, and FS is all they've known/ridden
mattd yeah growing up riding bmx is a benefit I think.
2:35 the guy that rode past probably gave blake a strange look under his full face helmet
This man is so funny and entertaining....and has really good riding skills....like it a lot!
I love watching Blake ride! Style and pure fun just ooze from his vids.
