- One day Blake was wondering whether you could use one mountain bike to race both downhill and cross country. That bike, the Nukeproof Scout hardtail; and what better place to test this one bike theory than the Sea Otter Classic. Taking part in the Downhill and Cross Country races with just a few modifications to the bike.

Agree'd, been considering ways to get into a full sus bike lately but after this weekends ride on my 2005 Kona hardtail, I realized that I loved riding my hardtail!

I have a 15 pound hard tail that was 5400 so they’re not always cheap
The bike doesn’t matter, its the rider that makes the magic happen
Indeed! But hey the bike does matter, at least in between disciplines, because you can´t whip a gravel bike in a 6 foot jump and survive the landing or do a Megavalance and reach the finish line unscatted
The bike does matter very much. Its like when want to increase the power in your car. In most cases the drivetrain is going to limit you. The drivetrain being the bike and the more powerful engine. Upgrade the bike and increase your potential. But their is no point in upgrading your bike if you aren’t pushing it to its limits or if you are very close to pushing it. Unless you are loaded with money.
That’s why I roll on a big wheel unicycle

Nicely done! Your channel has quickly become my new favorite... I normally watch software development videos, PC building videos... but we moved to a place where I can shred some insanely nice downhill, trail AND a bike park within minutes by bike and all of a sudden a 15 yr old BMX/Motocross kid mixed with a 20 year old mountain bike rider of the early 2000s...was awakened to a whole new world of awesome with modern geometry etc...and your videos just kick ass man. You've gotten me up to speed on the best MTB information as well answer so many questions even edge cases like fat bikes!

I did the megavalanche with my commencal Meta HT, of course I couldn't pretend to race but I was impressed of how the bike resisted to it, more than my arms lol

Hardtail riders are not a dying breed. They're the only sensible option for many people's budgets. But those people don't really pay to enter races though.
A quality semi vintage hardtail frame, a 1x and an upgrade to a modern fork and you've got a fantastic bike at 1/4 the price.

No Blake's Nukeproof Scout is the 27.5 one.
I think the latest Scout can run a 2.6 tyre not fully plus more semi plus

Grats Blake!! I live 2 minutes form those trails! I ride then 5 days a week and have raced XC 8 years, and have competed in 7 Sea Otter classic, 1 podium in 14 and 2 top 5 finishes. Last year I went to Enduro and race Otter Enduro for the first time, it was a blast! Come on back!! (This year its been postponed until October due to COVID)
