This is really hard because in my opinion, the 6th generation is by far the best in the entire history of gaming. Here's my ranking: 1. GameCube- If you couldn't tell by my profile pic, I'm a bit of a Nintendo fanboy, but I truly do adore the Purple Lunchbox to death, and the memories of growing up with this console with my little brother are some of my most cherished in gaming. 2. Game Boy Advance- I know most people don't include it in their 6th gen retrospectives, but it's my favorite handheld ever and it kept 2D gaming alive in the early 21st century. 3. PS2- With PS1 backwards compatibility in addition to it's own fantastic games, PS2 has one of the largest and most varied libraries ever. 4. Dreamcast- Really the only reason it's so low is because of limited experience. I loved the games I have played for it though, and when I get one in the future, I might rank it higher because a lot of the games seem to cater to my tastes. 5. Xbox- Like the Dreamcast, I only rank it so low because of limited experience. But again, I loved the games I have played for it. Really, all five are great systems, but the GCN may be my favorite console ever, even though Super Mario 64 is my personal favorite game. As for my favorite 6th gen game, I have to give it to Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Such a masterpiece on every level. Even the backtracking doesn't bother me due to the sheer charm and personality of this game. Definitely a 10/10 for me, and that Glitzville chapter was awesome. Anyways, to wrap up this really long comment, great video guys! You seem like really likable dudes.
As for favorites on the other consoles: GBA- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga PS2- WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain (I considered giving this to San Andreas, but the hours of fun HCTP has given me can't be replaced. Dreamcast- Sonic Adventure 2 Xbox- Halo 2
This could probably be the best generation. I mean the Halo franchise was born. Enough said haha. I could not agree more about MGS 3 snake eater. Best ps2 game out there
It definitely makes a strong case for the greatest generation for sure. We had a blast going back to some of these games. They still hold up very well for the most part.
This was the generation where all the stars aligned. - The 6th gen consoles were finally capable of 3D graphics without the awkward polygon shapes. - Developers experimented and released games much more often due to the power of these systems and the fact they didn't cost nowhere near as much to produce as they do today. - There were no trends, this was a generation where publishers were figuring out what could be the next trend, hence the more diverse libraries of games. - Couch co-op was popular. - All consoles had many unique IPs that made it worth owning them. - The online multiplayer was free for games that supported it. - There was no extra cost, you would buy the game and unlock the content in the game by just playing, there was no microtransactions, so if you still want stuff early, you can use cheat codes. - No wait times for installing or patching, just put the disc in the console and play. - ALL or at least 99% of them are still fully playable today because they didn't rely on online servers for progression or content, a lot of PS4 and Xbox One games will be completely broken or unplayable in a few years once they pull the plug. - Last but not least, games to be successful had to be good, they couldn't just patch it out later or release paid content after to make up for the losses so Triple A companies had to develop amazing games to get profit. As a result in 2001 alone we had Final Fantasy X, GTA 3, Halo, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Jak & Daxter, Shenmue 2, Unreal Tournament, Luigi's Mansion, Gran Turismo 3, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Devil May Cry, Twisted Metal: Black, Max Payne, etc. That's like, more than one amazing AAA game a month! And it was just 2001, I won't even mention the years after. Shame the Dreamcast died early, I think it's the only bad thing I have to say about that generation besides the region lock thingy.
Many great points here. We still play the consoles from this generation a ton. It was an amazing and possibly the best console generation for sure. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
I have to disagree with "There was no extra cost, you would buy the game and unlock the content in the game by just playing" . Very often they re-released a game and you had to buy the entire game for that extra content. For example , Devil May Cry 3 : Special edition added vergil , bloody palace a new difficulty and other stuff. But you had to re-buy the game. Sucks right?
Great call. I can't say it's my favorite as I just started getting into it and collecting for it a couple years ago. But I have loved going back and playing it. I've been playing a lot of Panzer Dragoon Orta lately :). Cheers man!
A legendary era. MGS 3 , Legacy of Kain Soul reaver / soul reaver 2 , Ninja gaiden black / NG 2&3 , Jet set radio future , Shenmue , Dead or Alive 2/3/4 , Virtua Fighter 3/4 , Halo , Haunting Grounds , Shadow of the Colossus , Persona 4 and so many other games that I don't know about , the list goes on . I only own a PS2 out of all of these but now that I have grown up I've come to appreciate all of these consoles and their games that still look so good today when emulated.
The Dreamcast was the first console you ever had or the first you ever bought new? Good talk guys, it's hard to pick one game from this generation so I'll give you my favorite from each console: Dreamcast Sports - NBA Showtime Non - Crazy Taxi PS2 Sports - Madden 2003 / NBA Street / Smackdown Here Comes the Pain Non - Karaoke Revolution / GTA 3 Just too many good ones on PS2 XBox Sports - ESPN NFL 2K5 Non - Halo 2 Gamecube Luigi's Mansion / Mario Kart Double Dash
Dreamcast was the first console I ever bought with my own money and the first console I had from this generation. My first console ever was the NES :). Ahhh NBA Showtime!!!! Love that damn game so much! Here comes the Pain is still may favorite smackdown game ever :)! Thanks so much for watching! Take care man
It is definitely so much fun revisiting previous generations in gaming. More often than not we find that the games hold up very well and are still tons of fun to play. Thanks a ton for watching!
A great generation indeed. I have owned or currently own all of those systems. Dreamcast was so so good. Resident Evil Code Veronica, Zombie Revenge, House of the Dead 2, Crazy Taxi, etc... The horrible piracy protection that allows you to burn Dreamcast ISOs onto CD-Rs and play them. Gamecube is special for me as well. The Resident Evil Remake absolutely blew my mind. Resident Evil 4 was amazing. Metroid Prime, Turok Evolution, Rogue Leader, Eternal Darkness... Gamecube has some real gems. PS2 was a powerhouse. In my opinion still the best system Sony ever made. I remember getting one for Christmas and being super excited. You guys mentioned Red Faction 2, I do love that game, but I really loved the original Red Faction. The geomod engine where you could destroy almost anything was awesome. Multiplayer was a blast in that series as well. PS2 just has a ridiculous library of classic games. Best thing is they're relatively cheap and super easy to collect right now. Xbox is probably my favorite though. I was late to that party, but when I fired up Halo Combat Evolved for the first time... Man, I was just blown away by that game. When Halo 2 was coming out I just could not wait. I was working at Toys R Us at the time, and got in on a little scheme with my manager in the R Zone where we all got our copies well before the street date. We paid him and he rung us up at midnight on release night, nobody was the wiser. Probably one of my favorite video game memories is playing that game well before a majority of the rest of the world. So many system link parties with that game. Xboxes, ethernet cables, routers, and four players per TV duking it out all night long with buddies. Great video guys. Brings back a lot of good memories.
Thanks for sharing these amazing memories! This generation just is so damn fun to talk about. This episode could have been an hour long lol! Love you Halo 2 story :). That is epic! We have plans to start have LAN parties again and maybe live stream them some how lol. Thanks so much for watching! PS......I'm kicking myself for not mentioning Eternal Darkness in this episode, love that game
6th gen was an amazing one. Felt like developers were making all sorts of games. I feel like they experimented way more too. I have to admit though I’m really liking this current generation though. I feel like I’m seeing such a wide variety of genres & sub-genres from the top tier to the talented indies. It’s such a great time to be a gamer.
Thanks for checking out the channel! It was definitely a great generation. Current gen is quite good too but there are some things that scare us moving forward. Micro transactions, lack of physical media, developers releasing half baked games to meet deadlines to name a few. Just hoping that doesn't increase in the future. But for now all is well :)
Damn I love this generation. I was in high school and so caught up that I missed so many great games for this generation. The only reason I owned an Xbox was for Halo lan parties.
So hard to pick a favourite from this generation... I had the PS2 as a kid and loved it so much and still have it, MGS3 is one of my all time favourite games which iv also beat soooo many times! and the PS2 is home to my biggest library of games, I didn’t have a GameCube till many years later but iv grown to love and appreciate it soooo much, so it’s between those two, I love my original Xbox too, unfortunately don’t own a Dreamcast and only played one a few times as one of my mates had one as a kid, always felt similar the the Xbox in my opinion, I think there is a link? I know they got a lot of the Dreamcast games and a lot of Sega stuff! GameCube controllers are also one of my faves! Awesome video as always guys! Sorry about the long comment haha 😅
No problem at all :)! There is so much fun stuff to talk about from this generation we totally understand! It was a really fun episode to shoot because we just couldn't stop talking about it or fit everything into the episode we wanted to cover.
My dawg has impeccable taste! I bought Subsistence even though I didn’t own a PS2 at the time. I knew I would somehow get to play it. I eventually got someone to lend me a PS2 in the summer of 2006 so I could finally experience the masterpiece.
This was the generation I worked at a video game store and played everything. It was kind of an amazing time! Probably played mostly xbox but only because I hacked and modded mine so I could pull used games from the store shelves and copy them to the HD. Good times.
yeah our buddy miaxhurricanes worked at a hollywood video during this time said he rented lots of games from this era. that would of been a dope job back then. easily one of the best eras in gaming
Awesome video guys!! Love the production! I am going for a complete GameCube collection. I am VERY close to hitting 500 games. So that complete collection is in my sights! I think once I hit 500 I'll post a video showcasing my collection. Love the video, can't wait to see more!
@@GamingOffTheGrid I have somewhere around 60 left. A few of which are the expensive heavy hitters like Gotcha Force, and then a mixture of uncommon and commons with a few other rares sprinkled in. You can see some good shots of my collection on Instagram. @retro_wolf_88. I actually just followed you guys as well
I'm the living under a rock in a dark cave deep in the Earth kind of person as I've never played let alone owned a ps2 or Xbox. I have a Dreamcast and Gamecube. I couldn't tell you if you put a gun to my head which one I like more. The Dreamcast is nuts as it (unofficially) gets new games for it. I bought Pier Solar for it a little while back for example so anyone who got a Dreamcast got their money's worth in terms of longevity with new games to play on it which is second only to the Neo Geo. As for games if I was allowed only one for either system it would be the same game: Skies of Arcadia! The most underrated and worth the time to play RPG of all time.
The best use of a dreamcast is to hold a beer. Perfect coaster. We review old games and love the 6th gen (especially the ps2 and gamecube) and have a review for Rapala fishing for PS2. Subbed and will look out for more classic game reviews.
Lol! It does have a nice flat lid that would hold a beer perfectly :). We still play all the systems on the regular that were in this episode with the Game Cube getting the nod for the most played currently.
My favorite console is Gamecube. I had a PS2 first then Gamecube and then Xbox. I did not appreciate or play my gamecube back then as I do now. But back then I played PS2 alot. So PS2 is second, and Xbox 3rd. I didn't have a Dreamcast til 4 years ago. Again love the video. Cheers Guys.
I had the Xbox and GameCube (still have them). I got the Xbox to play Blinx The Time Sweeper, and I also got the sequel Blinx 2 around the time it came out. Loved those games, too bad they never continued making them. I also got Sega GT 2002 + JSRF with my Xbox and played JSRF a lot. I also had Fuzion Frenzy, Halo, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Voodoo Vince. I got the GameCube with Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness about I think 3 years later. I also got Melee, Pokemon Colosseum, Paper Mario TTYD, Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, and my favorite game on the GameCube and in the 6th gen, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. That game made me a Sonic fan.
JSRF is badass! For the longest time that was the only reason I wanted an XBOX because I was such a big fan of the first one on Dreamcast. We're going to have to pick up Sonic Adventure 2 on the GC. That's one we haven't played. Cheers to the 6th Gen! Thanks for watching.
To be fair the Dreamcast had a dedicated modem for online play. Was pretty sweet But didn't save it from the PS2 hype that really shot the system in the back when developers dropped the system before it was dead to make games for the PS2.
The Dreamcast was awesome. I still remember having my mind absolutely blown playing Phantasy Star Online and Unreal Tournament.....online:). It was also the first console I ever bought with my own money so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Thanks a ton for stopping by and checking out the channel, we greatly appreciate it!
The ps2 is what i used to play back then like shellshock nam 67 red dead revolver and socom 2 was what i played the most on the ps2 those 3 games r my childhood
Great games for sure man! So many hours of my life went into Socom 2 :). I still remember the map "Crossroads" like the back of my hand lol. Thanks a ton for watching! Cheers!
Great vid. I had 3 out of the 4. I still think this generation was the biggest jump graphically ever. Going from 5th to this. It was unreal. Seeing Sonic Adventure on display at Toys R Us first time at 9 was nuts lol. Had a Dreamcast first. Great sports, fighting games, Sonic, etc. then a cube. Then the OG Xbox. You guys are 100 percent though. The cube was definitely the 3rd at the time other then if someone wanted to play melee, double dash, etc. Also This was the era of peak sports and racing games by far. Every Madden from 02-07 was Fire. NFL 2K games were great and NBA 2K was at its apex. Even NBA Live from 03-06 was solid. The EA BIG sports games kicked ass. Some classic Need For Speed Games this era. Gran Turismo for PS2. Project Gotham Racing games on Xbox. Midnight club, burnout, test drive etc. I felt like 6th could’ve and should’ve lasted longer. Technology with the online game stores and streaming moved fast as shit. It isn’t the same feeling. Hard to explain.
It may be hard to explain but I know exactly what you are saying. This was the peak of gaming the way we grew up with it. From NES to this era everything was like the natural evolution of things. A few things after this era started to go wrong. Developers have started taking less risk because they know what will guarantee sales. We have reached a state of very formulaic games because they know what works (and by works I mean makes the most money.) Then you bring in the reliance on the internet, micro transactions, patches, updates and here we are. I could play games from gen 3-6 forever and be content. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid haha exactly.. like look at GTA. You had 5 GTA games that generation if you count the 2 stories games. You had 3 in the 7th gen if you count ballad of Gay Tony lol. Zero the next gen. I mean Rockstar if you don’t wanna make a new game. Remake Vice City and San Andreas with GTA 5 controls and graphics. Be phenomenal lol. It’s also frustrating how Madden and 2K have just deteriorated too…
Fantastic episode!! So many amazing memories of gen 6!! I was exactly the same being super pumped when my mate got a PS2 even though it wasn't my own, lol!! Great game shout outs too! Yesss you guys also appreciate Red Faction!! I loved 1 and 2!!
It was an awesome time in gaming for sure! We were so pumped shooting this episode because our memories just kept flooding in. And yes.........Red Faction is great! Both versions are amazing :)
I had the Dreamcast and the Xbox, my brother had the Gamecube and the PS2. Dreamcast hands down is one of THEE MOST beautiful game consoles in existence. Loved playing HotD2, Unreal Tournament & Quake 3 Arena. My brother played Smash Bros, Metal Gear and all the rest of it. We eventually would both converge into Halo 2 MLG heads and play that game from sun up till sun down for 3 fcking years (2005,2006,2007). I'm talking NO SLEEP for 6 days straight. If it wasn't for Halo 2, I would have probably NEVER bought the Xbox. I thought I was done with video games when the Dreamcast was discontinued in 2001. I ended up playing Fatal Frame 2 which would go down in Xbox history as one of the most scariest games I have ever played. Growing up, I only ever stuck to 1 console during each generation. Genesis, then Playstation, then Dreamcast and lastly, the original Xbox. I currently own 3 OG Xbox;s with 1 of them modded and I play that one online with Halo 2 STILL via Xlink Kai. I pulled my Dreamcast out the closet and booted it up; it still runs like a charm. I am starting to notice that THIS specific generation, the 6th generation, is starting to revive with sites such as gc-forever.com, dreamcast-talk.com and ogxbox.com. Let us relive the golden years boys.
Thanks a ton for watching man and telling us a little bit about your experience with this generation. The Dreamcast was great. We still fire up Jet Grind fairly frequently :)! We just recently got into Fatal Frame. I think we got it on PS2 though which isn't quite as polished as the XBOX version from what I hear. We have a pile of XBOX's and 360's because we're still about that LAN party life :)! Thanks again, we really appreciate the support and the comment! It's what makes doing this You Tube thing so fun. Have a great Sunday, cheers!
YES LADS!!! These are the same consoles we really started to get stuck into properly growing up... Lots of nostalgia towards these consoles and games.. Haven't tried the Mario soccer game though will have to give that a go! MGS games are my favourite!
Thanks a ton for watching guys! You definitely won't regret getting Mario Strikers! It is epic. The one on the Wii is good but got a little crazy. The Game Cube on however......well they just got it right :)
had some fun times on all of these consoles dudes its hard to say but ps1 and 2 are up there and games wow i really cant choose on that . Awesome video dudes keep it up
Dreamcast was 1st console I got of that generation. Kept being told that PS2 would be better and that Dreamcast would become obsolete. Well, it did become obsolete, but I have no regrets and still got the thing. Love it. Bought Xbox next within the 6th gen, was given a PS2 slim probably at the end of 7th gen or beginning of 8th gen, and bought a Gamecube 2 years ago.
Dremcast and ps2 is my favorite console from the 6 generation console my favorite games these would be dreamcast: wwf royale rumble soul calibur resident evil code veronica and crazy taxi ps2: gta vc socom 1 shellsock nam 67 hitman 2 and moh frontline
Awesome! We actually just played Royal Rumble on the DC the other night :). What an awesome generation. It's crazy to think that the PS2 turns 20 this year.....YIKES! We're getting old lol. And this episode feels like forever ago. Thanks a ton for watching. Cheers!
The only console I owned from this generation was the PS2... And I owned MANY different ones. Only one at a time, but I would always buy the warranty and trade my old one in for a new right before the contract ended ;) Favorite game: Socom II (online) I know it's an off the grid channel, but I think it's worth noting that this era was groundbreaking with the online networking.
At the time I played the most of the PS2, but I believe the Dreamcast and XBOX hold up the best today. And even though the new GOW is a masterpiece... I also still enjoy the gameplay style of the originals.
We are in the same boat but play the game cube the most now. And glad you feel that way about GOW lol! I had a feeling people would light me up for saying that but......it's just how I feel. Thanks a ton for watching!
Dreamcast and ps2 always both has great games dbz budokai sonic adventures syphon filter wwf just bring it golden eye rogue agent thps 2 crazy taxi etc
Ohhhh man when I got a ps2 first I only had ps1 games on there....but no ps1 memory card- I didn't even mind that much at the time but now it'd be painful. I've actually still got quite a lot of dvds- I have no shame
I totally agree, and there is so many sweet games on it that just got overlooked! We currently are falling head over heels for it and can't stop buying games for it
What an amazing generation--the Dreamcast really was sadly overlooked--just bad timing. The PS2--we got ours day one and were soooo excited--we LOVED the DVD and backwards compatibility--the former marking my first DVD player in fact. It took me so long to get a GC... I usually pick up big N systems as soon as possible, but this one I held off on--thanks in no small part to the PS2 and the bevy of RPGs there. Oh man, the "true" start of the GTA games!! So many good calls on the games--so many greats that I feel I've forgotten too. lol I think this generation holds up really well--a lot of the growing pains of 3D gaming had been overcome and the graphics were really coming together nicely in a way that will hold up nicely as time goes on. Oh man, the "Duke" controller for Xbox...lol To answer your N64 to GC controller question--it's like that girl/boy in middle school, totally unappealing and awkward looking and then high school starts and boom--who IS this goddess? This Adonis? This...this...~Dreeeam Weaver!~ Glad to hear the beer was good--probably should've sent 2 of that one already at least. lol Great discussion guys--I wonder if so many people played PS2/Xbox that they missed out on GC and that's why it's so sought after--they're catching up; BUT, I feel soon that PS2 and Xbox will become more and more sought after--you'll start getting those mid-lifers coming in and wanting to revisit old memories.
Awesome comment and you are right on the mark. Love the middle school to high school comparison LMFAO! We're getting ready to go down a major rabbit hole with the Dreamcast actually :). We have a bunch of Japanese shooters on the way so it's gonna get some love! You guys are awesome and we appreciate you so much!
@@GamingOffTheGrid lol--thanks guys! And hey, we genuinely enjoy the channel--great content and awesome videos--we appreciate the work you guys put into all of this and your passion is contagious!
Never played ps2 or dreamcast but GameCube was my jam and as I got older a buddy had a original Xbox and had time splitters and reddick and I jammed on that aswell as halo
I had the genesis but not the dreamcast. I loved me some earthworm jim. The ps2 is such a classic though. I think those were my favorite games. It was amazing. This was such a good time. Haha
Ahhh you just had to bring up Earthworm Jim :)! Such an awesome game. There was actually an HD remake on the PS3 and XBox 360 that was awesome as well. And yes, Gen 6 was a great time for sure :)
That is one we missed out on unfortunately. I will try getting us a copy to check out. I just looked it up and it looks great and..........it's a sega game :). Thanks a ton for watching
Hands down the best generation ever period it was a system and game for everyone seriously and that's when games came complete no bs dlc to finish a game
Nintendo just announced ‘Portal’ is coming to the Switch. I know you guys are fans of that game. I love the Gamecube but I actually switched to PS2 at that time. Cheers!
Scarface is one we never got around to playing. Absolutely love the movie though so......looks like we need to pick it up :). Thanks a ton for watching. Cheers to the PS2!
I consider the Dreamcast the first online gaming console because you had Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament. Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. The Sonic & Mega Man X collection, Yakuza, Shadow of the Colossus, Wrath of Cortex and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One which that game deserves a remastered version because that was my favorite Call of Duty games for the PlayStation 2 and I have the original unit because I don't like the slim because you had to lift the flap up to put the disc in. And I have the trilogy for the PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto and I loved 3 and San Andreas and Vice City was alright and maybe foreshadowing Red Dead Redemption 2 with the cowboy painting or photo. Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Resident Evil 4 and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. And all I played the original Xbox was Halo and the Burger King games and I have the Xbox 1 Duke controller and I know that it was big freaking unit but I remember the controls for it and I tried it for the Xbox 360 and Xbox 1 games to see if I'm better with the original Xbox controller or with today's Xbox controller. And I would recommend trying American Beauty and it's from a brewery that you had some of its brews
Oh yes! How the hell did we forget to mention that!? Yikes! Over the last couple days Robert and I keep thinking of games we forgot to talk about in this episode lol. Painful. Thanks a ton for watching!
PlayStation 2 is my favorite console of all time many of my favorite games of all time are ps2 exclusives shadow of the colossus being my favorite game of all time plus I’m getting deep into the PlayStation 2 hack and slash library it’s shocking honestly and not just for hack and slashes but a lot of the underrated games on ps2 are not just ok games a lot of the underrated games are some of the best and on PlayStation 2 got a whole playlist of great games that are exclusives to Ps2
TLDR : jump to my ranking. My Statement: Let's be honest, the GameCube and the PS2 are the easy winners by today's standard. - The gamecube might be the winner if you put first party games on top (Mario Sunshine , Zelda WW and TP, Metroid Prime, F-Zero , Tales of Symphonia/ Baten Kaitos, Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario , Fire Emblem, Pikmin...) and multi-player games were easily the best of the generation ( Smash Melee, Mario Kart, the Mario party games, Turok, Mario sports games etc). The PS2 also had some of the best first Party games of the Era (FF10, Metal gear, Shadow And Ico, GTA, God of War, Jack and Dexter...). Plus if you value the size of the game library the PS2 is taking the title home easily, so many third parties and game genres on the system. The dreamcast had some cool features but didn't lived long enough to build a strong library. The Xbox had great graphics and some cool games, but few of them marked history like the GameCube and PS2. Halo was THE game of the system and the online feature was mainly used to play this game. Plus this console did well but mainly in the US, when the rest of the world didn't really cared about the system. PS2 vs GameCube.: Overall, if I had to keep a gen 6 console today it would be the GameCube. The PS2 had a great library, undoubtedly but to me the GameCube is slightly ahead. The first party games of the GameCube are for some of them amongst the best games of all time, and if you want some of the best offline multiplayer games of the gen the GameCube is the way to go. The PS2 had the DVD player that was amazing at the time but today no one care about this feature. On the other hand the GameCube have the gameboy player: this accessory is still relevant to this day to play your gameboy games on the TV. Speaking of relevance the GameCube might have the best controllers of the Era (if you are not a Dualshock hard-core fan). The Gamecube controllers can be used to play Switch games, that's nice. - On the reliability side, I feel like the GameCube is probably the most reliable console of the gen (alongside with the dreamcast). So that's something quite nice to note. - For tech junkies, the GameCube is the way to go if you value image quality. The gamecube is a more powerful system compared to the PS2. Metroid Prime, F-Zero and much more are still looking great to this day ( even if some PS2 games looked fantastic too, like Shadow of the Colossus or Odin Sphere, some suffered some heavy framerate issues that aren't seen often on the GameCube. Last but not least, most multiplatform games ( Nighfire, RE4, Rayman 3, Need for Speed... ) look and play better on the Cube. In 2021: Anyway, the PS2 and the GameCube are must haves and are still visually appealing, especially with HDMI mods/ good cables paired with 480p/60fps (gamecube games look better when runned on the cube compared to the Wii). In 2021 the dreamcast is expensive and despite having a nice library doesn't have that much killer apps. Xbox have online built-in but it was feature mainly used to play Halo. In 2021 playing Halo online on a OG Xbox is irrelevant. It had some cool games but compared to the GameCube or PS2 it not that much. Plus, the 360 and later xbox gens can read OG Xbox games for the most part. My personal top would be (with a 2021 stand view) : - 1st: The Gamecube (++ excellent first party games, very strong offline multiplayer titles, amazing controler, reliable, the gameboy player, great graphics). (-- better if modded when played on modern gear, prices are high). - 2nd: PS2 (++ Great first party games, huge 3rd party library, good controler, relatively cheap in 2021, lots of accessories). (-- might be the least reliable system, only 2 standard controler ports, least powerful console of the bunch if you care about multiplatform games). - 3rd : The Dreamcast (++ Inovative games like Jet Set Radio, Shenmue etc , Inovative controler , varied game genres, reliability, pretty nice graphics, great for collecting). (-- Small library, noisy, expensive hardware and software, plastic turns yellow, kinda awkward controler). - 4th : The Xbox (++ Halo, best graphics of the gen, some cool 4 player games, strong on the sports/ shooter side. Superior version on multiplatform games most of the time, not too expensive to collect). (-- Bad controler, few first party killer apps despite Halo and a handful of great games, missing genres (few Japanese games for instance ), other Xbox Gens can read most OG Xbox games). That was my advice on this amazing gen, thanks for reading!
@@GamingOffTheGrid My pleasure, you guys have a really nice channel and your older content is still valid today. Keep up the good work. Ps: I would really like to see handled consoles reviewed too even if those systems aren't your primary focus
Soul reaver on the PS2 was the tits, I only knew one person back then who had a dreamcast and the lucky bugger seemed to have a new game each week....... I hated that kid
I've never even heard of that game, but just looked it up and the game play footage looks freaking sweet! Hahaha I can see the hatred is still alive today
I'll bring Robert up to speed on it :). In junior high me and my buddy played the hell out of that game when we would hang out at his place. I don't have a copy currently but will change that real quick lol
Ewwww, Red faction 2, you've got to be trolling. That's the worst red faction in the series. Another red faction didn't come out till 7 years later AKA red faction guerrilla. It nearly killed the series. The original red faction was so much better.
Got to disagree with you unfortunately. Have you played 4 player red faction 2? Yes the single player isn't the best but multiplayer.....so much fun. It's a great 2-4 player local multiplayer experience. Thanks so much for watching, cheers! Have a great week!
What is your favorite console from generation 6? Also, what is your favorite game from this generation? Tell us in the comment section below!
Loved the video cheers
Dreamcast w/ Online games 🤘🏼
That was definitely huge. I remember playing Phantasy Star and Unreal Tournament :)
This is really hard because in my opinion, the 6th generation is by far the best in the entire history of gaming. Here's my ranking:
As for favorites on the other consoles:
GBA- Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
PS2- WWE Smackdown: Here Comes The Pain (I considered giving this to San Andreas, but the hours of fun HCTP has given me can't be replaced.
Dreamcast- Sonic Adventure 2
Xbox- Halo 2
Original Xbox is my favorite from this generation.
Great call. I can't say it's my favorite as I just started getting into it and collecting for it a couple years ago. But I have loved going back and playing it. I've been playing a lot of Panzer Dragoon Orta lately :). Cheers man!
Imo the best xbox console to date, also the controller is amazing
I still have my GameCube and PS2 ! 2 of my favorite consoles everrr!! Another great video ! Keep up the amazing work!
They are both amazing for sure! Thanks for all your support man, we really appreciate it!
Still have mine aswell
6th gen was definitely the golden age. I don't even have all 4 consoles but so many AAA games!
Legendary Era for sure. All 3 consoles were loaded with bangers! It was a great time to be a gamer for sure. Thanks a ton for watching. Cheers!
The Dreamcast was the first console you ever had or the first you ever bought new?
Good talk guys, it's hard to pick one game from this generation so I'll give you my favorite from each console:
Dreamcast
Sports - NBA Showtime
Non - Crazy Taxi
PS2
Sports - Madden 2003 / NBA Street / Smackdown Here Comes the Pain
Non - Karaoke Revolution / GTA 3
Just too many good ones on PS2
XBox
Sports - ESPN NFL 2K5
Non - Halo 2
Gamecube
Luigi's Mansion / Mario Kart Double Dash
Dreamcast was the first console I ever bought with my own money and the first console I had from this generation. My first console ever was the NES :). Ahhh NBA Showtime!!!! Love that damn game so much! Here comes the Pain is still may favorite smackdown game ever :)! Thanks so much for watching! Take care man
Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube.
The holy trinity of 99'-2000.
Many of my favorite games were release on those systems.
This is the generation that I grew up with
These are the reasons I started my retro channel, wanted to see how reliving my childhood would hold up with more modern games.
We do too man! It's incredible for sure. Halo LAN parties were so amazing. We are on a quest to make it a thing again lol! It will happen :)
That is so awesome!! What games do you have yet to get? Thanks a ton for checking out the channel! We really appreciate it!
I actually just followed you guys as well
Soul caliber for the Dreamcast in my first system of that generation was a Sega Dreamcast
Love the Dreamcast and the Game Cube. Both great consoles and still worth plaing today. Thanks a ton for watching and cheers to keeping it retro!
I have the GameCube and Xbox. Super Smash Bros. Melee was my favorite game on the GameCube and Jet Set Radio Future was my favorite game on the Xbox.
Oh two freaking fantastic games!! What’s your favorite system from this era?! I know it’s a hard choice but would love to know
@@GamingOffTheGrid I'm gonna give it to the GameCube since I really love Nintendo games. Xbox is a very close second though.
Good choice! GameCube is one of my favorite systems! :)
Jet Grind Radio (Dreamcast), Eternal Darkness (Gamecube), Silent Hill 2 (PS2), Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox).
All fantastic games :). Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid Got mine close to launch and still like it over the PS2 and Xbox. No problem, fun channel, you guys have a good energy.
@@HistoricNerd Thanks again! We get jacked up about this stuff so the energy just flows lol. Take care.
Cheers!
PS thanks for digging up this oldie :)
@@GamingOffTheGrid we will be picking that up! Good video lads.... You're like the American version of us but more professional
Thanks guys! You have an awesome channel yourselves! We don't feel very professional so it's good to hear we come off that way lol! Take care fellas!
My fav of Gen 6 is the OG Xbox with OG Halo, such a fantastic game and story just blew me away
I remember going over to my neighbors house who had it and it was so freaking sweet! He was addicted to that game and then the whole series eventually
had some fun times on all of these consoles dudes its hard to say but ps1 and 2 are up there and games wow i really cant choose on that . Awesome video dudes keep it up
Thank you so much! This episode was a lot of fun to film and reminisce about this era :)
This generation will never be topped. So many great games and memories.
We agree fully! 🍻
Cheers!
That have the best start ups Dreamcast and PlayStation 2 start ups are golden
The only console I owned from this generation was the PS2... And I owned MANY different ones. Only one at a time, but I would always buy the warranty and trade my old one in for a new right before the contract ended ;)
Favorite game: Socom II (online)
I know it's an off the grid channel, but I think it's worth noting that this era was groundbreaking with the online networking.
Indeed it was and our screen names will forever make me smile! Especially Godfrey's :)
First console was a PS2 I still have it till this day and I play it everyday I mean I have the newer stuff but I just like the PS2 better
That's awesome! It is truly an amazing console for sure. We absolutely love this generation
I wish I had a ps2 and ps1 it would be cool plus I love the intros on them
I wanna know if there's a beer out there that Robert WOULDN'T think would be good on a nice summer day
Lol!!! Funny part is I don't think the season even matters to him he just like drinking during the day!
Hard question to answer because every console was a blast back then but ps2 was the one i used the most
Dang, old video here. Thanks for watching. We'd go PS2. Not the most powerful of the generation but it has an epic library. Cheers!
Have you played dynasty warriors and samurai warriors those games are so easy to revist I’m always in the mood for those games
We have played Dynasty Warriors. We have 2,3 and 5 I believe. Definitely fun for sure. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid ya they never get old
I Will Stand On This Hill Til I Die Dreamcast Is My Favorite Console Of All Time!. 🙌❤
Dude!!!! If you like Rogue Agent we just became friends :)! Cheers to that!
Great episode bros, GameCube gets my vote. But I played more PS2 at that time.
Ohhhh man when I got a ps2 first I only had ps1 games on there....but no ps1 memory card- I didn't even mind that much at the time but now it'd be painful. I've actually still got quite a lot of dvds- I have no shame
Lol! We still have tons of VHS and DVD's so no worries my friend we totally understand :)
I have both a dreamcast and a original Xbox and 4 gamecube games for my Wii
Hell ya! The Wii is so versatile. We play ours a ton. Thanks for watching this oldie :). Cheers!
If The Dreamcast had a dvd player and better 3rd party support. It would done much better cause it's a great console.
Oh man, the "Duke" controller for Xbox...lol
To answer your N64 to GC controller question--it's like that girl/boy in middle school, totally unappealing and awkward looking and then high school starts and boom--who IS this goddess? This Adonis? This...this...~Dreeeam Weaver!~
Glad to hear the beer was good--probably should've sent 2 of that one already at least. lol
Great discussion guys--I wonder if so many people played PS2/Xbox that they missed out on GC and that's why it's so sought after--they're catching up; BUT, I feel soon that PS2 and Xbox will become more and more sought after--you'll start getting those mid-lifers coming in and wanting to revisit old memories.
I think my favorite console has to be the OG Xbox! I'm a die hard Microsoft fan till death! Also...Halo...Nuff Said
It was a power house Greg for sure! You have always loved Halo even though you suck at it LOL!
Never played ps2 or dreamcast but GameCube was my jam and as I got older a buddy had a original Xbox and had time splitters and reddick and I jammed on that aswell as halo
Ps2 and Xbox are amazing consoles. Great video guys!
Indeed they are! We love this generation and it was a really fun episode to shoot :). Thanks so much for watching!
Great Video mate keep it up
Thank you so much! We really appreciate it :)
@@GamingOffTheGrid oh i wonder if thats playable on xbox one?
Hmmm.....not sure but it's worth checking the online store for sure. Let us know, I'd be interested to find out and we don't have an XBOXone

Oh yes!! That would be a sweet remaster!
I loved Spartan the total warrior on ps2
That is one we missed out on unfortunately. I will try getting us a copy to check out. I just looked it up and it looks great and..........it's a sega game :). Thanks a ton for watching
Hands down the best generation ever period it was a system and game for everyone seriously and that's when games came complete no bs dlc to finish a game

@@GamingOffTheGrid always good content i have a passion for gaming so this channel is the go to for old and new 👌
Nintendo just announced ‘Portal’ is coming to the Switch. I know you guys are fans of that game. I love the Gamecube but I actually switched to PS2 at that time. Cheers!
yeah we heard that. we havent poped that game in for awhile. yeah i mainly played ps2 in that era
The bottle on the Dreamcast is kind of making me nervous.
Nothing to worry we are trained professionals LOL!
Mine favorite would be ps2 so many great games on it i remember playing scarface the world is yours lord of the rings 2 towers tekken tag tournament
Scarface is one we never got around to playing. Absolutely love the movie though so......looks like we need to pick it up :). Thanks a ton for watching. Cheers to the PS2!
O_o.... are you using those consoles as drink mats?
No definitely not lol!
Do you remember what brewery it is from? We would love to try it!
I'm just going to say Kingdom Hearts 3. You'll puzzle it together
OHHH by Dogfish Head?!?!?!
Yes
Ps2 was the best and still is. Shadow of Colossus , mgs 3 and God of War are my favorite!
Ahhhh MGS 3!!!! Such a great game. The PS2 is epic. We still play ours all the time. Cheers to the PS2!
@@GamingOffTheGrid absolutely 🔥
XBOX was ahead of it's time... What it comes to graphics! 🤩😎
PS2. Best game you didn't mention? Gran Turismo 3. After playing GT1 and 2 on PS1, I knew the next iteration was going to be a system seller. It was.
Good game! One we need to fire up again! 🍻
Also Not Cool Having That Drink On The Gift From The Gaming Gods The Dreamcast 💔
Wish they would rerelease Skies of Arcadia.
Oh yes! How the hell did we forget to mention that!? Yikes! Over the last couple days Robert and I keep thinking of games we forgot to talk about in this episode lol. Painful. Thanks a ton for watching!
Skies Of Arcadia The FFVII Of The Dreamcast Still Have That Game 🤘.
You weren’t wrong. Dreamcast is better than PS2. :) I still play my Dreamcast and love it.
The 6th gem console I own is the original Xbox with some games and 2 controllers
Epic console for sure. The library is amazing and so versatile. This is an older vid. Thanks for going back and watching. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid ye I love these retro videos
@@armorwolf7934 Man some of them are pretty rough. We didn't know what the hell we were doing on the tech side of things lol.

TLDR : jump to my ranking.
My Statement:
Let's be honest, the GameCube and
the PS2 are the easy winners by today's standard.
PS2 vs GameCube.:
Overall, if I had to keep a gen 6 console today it would be the GameCube.
In 2021:
Anyway, the PS2 and the GameCube are must haves and are still visually appealing, especially with HDMI mods/ good cables paired with 480p/60fps (gamecube games look better when runned on the cube compared to the Wii).
My personal top would be (with a 2021 stand view) :
- 1st: The Gamecube (++ excellent first party games, very strong offline multiplayer titles, amazing controler, reliable, the gameboy player, great graphics).
Great info. Thanks for the great comment and insight and thanks for going back and watching this old vid. Cheers!
@@GamingOffTheGrid My pleasure, you guys have a really nice channel and your older content is still valid today. Keep up the good work.
Ps: I would really like to see handled consoles reviewed too even if those systems aren't your primary focus
Love it love it
Awesome man!!! Thanks a ton for checking out the channel, we greatly appreciate it.
Genesis was backwards compatible.
Seriously using a dreamcast as a coaster? lol
😂 your the first one to notice! oldie but goodie! 🍻
wow😮😮😮😮😮
Thanks for checking it out!
Aww ya gotta try soul reaver, the first one is so awesome I even have 3 tattoos from the games clan symbols
I'll bring Robert up to speed on it :). In junior high me and my buddy played the hell out of that game when we would hang out at his place. I don't have a copy currently but will change that real quick lol
Burnout 3 take down
Yesir! Classic! We stream Burnout 3 and Revenge quite a bit.
How dare you put dream cast above PS2 you apologize
Ewwww, Red faction 2, you've got to be trolling. That's the worst red faction in the series. Another red faction didn't come out till 7 years later AKA red faction guerrilla. It nearly killed the series. The original red faction was so much better.
Got to disagree with you unfortunately. Have you played 4 player red faction 2? Yes the single player isn't the best but multiplayer.....so much fun. It's a great 2-4 player local multiplayer experience. Thanks so much for watching, cheers! Have a great week!
