Still the only console that made me really feel like 'next-gen' was here. Everything since has been incremental and I was never quite as floored by the jump between gens.
Pretty much this was the last time I felt this. It had an amazing arcade port of DOA2. Pretty much every gen since this has been able to pull off bigger environments, faster load times but in terms small space graphical fidelity not that much difference.
@@brandogg 360 is another gen forward compared to those other consoles. Ps2 never looked better than dreamcast but there's an argument for some gamecube titles like starfox adventure and the zeldas . Gamecube held up super well.
Yeah, at the time, fake CGI game images were becoming a thing on the internet and so when they showed screenshots of Dreamcast games, I remember saying, "There's no way that's real... no home console can look that good!" But sure enough it was real, and affordable, and one of my favorite arcade games, Soul Calibur was on it!
@@Bristecom Soul Calibur was next level. The graphics were way better than anything on another console at the time and improved on the arcade version 😎👍
Dreamcast was so special man. I got one for my 16th birthday on 9/9/99! I'll never forget the first time the whale chased me in Sonic Adventure, the first time I played Shenmue and feeling like I was transported to Japan, the first time I knocked someone off a building in DOA2, and my first play through of Skies of Arcadia. I spent most of 10th grade in shop class playing VMU mini games. Though if I had to pick a favorite memory, it would be playing Phantasy Star Online with my friends. Thanks for the video. I've been playing dreamcast recently on my M2 Mac and the experience in Redream is amazing! Keep up the good work, subbed!
Thank you so much! We’re the same age and shared almost the exact same experience. Dialing up and playing PSO online with my friends after school was one of the most unbelievable experiences ever! It was so magical and special, and I’ve been wanting to dive back into PSO solely bc of that. Thank you so much for the sub!!
Yes! I've played every mainline game console and Dreamcast will always be my favorite. Phantasy Star Online is what completely blew my mind - a real-time MMORPG in the year 2000!? I almost couldn't believe it was real and I got totally addicted - I played PSO almost non-stop for months, getting little to no sleep on school nights, and I continued to play it often for years with Version 2 and later Episode 2 on GC. Then as you say, there was Shenmue which almost seems more like a memory of me actually being in Japan in the 80's rather than a video game. Playing 4 player tag team DOA2 with my buds was so much fun! Being able to play Soul Calibur at home instead of at the arcades was amazing. Sonic Adventure was really impressive, Jet Grind Radio was super cool... there's just too many great games to name! Dreamcast was just all about fun and it struck the perfect balance of everything for me. Even though I eventually got and enjoyed the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox, I was always annoyed that most people bought into the hype of the PS2 and wouldn't give Dreamcast a chance, and they mostly just went for the PS2 because "It's gonna play DVD movies and have the Emotion Engine maaan!"
I was totally in love with the console. It has so many great games and I still play it regularly. I was absolutely shattered when they announced that SEGA would drop out if the console market.
I too was devastated, I was worried about the future of Sega’s franchises and was frustrated that more people didn’t get to experience such an amazing console
@@TynologyGamingI was bummed out too until i really thought about it more. That generation of consoles was really the last generation that truly mattered because almost right after that every console was just a PC, with little to no indivituality or look to the games. The only timeframe where we could have really benefitted from a Dreamcast 2 would have been a more powerful version of the system at the time of PS2 launch, so we could have continued to have an even larger DC library, with even better graphics and none of those planned DC releases would have not spilled to the Xbox, PS2 and GC. But really the DC game library is so incredible i have never lost sleep over it. From PS3 and PS4/PS4 Pro era most games suffered from either low resolution, low framerate or just poor visuals and i think that was a really awkward period because no game really felt perfect. And the current generation wouldn't benefit from a DC 2 at all. It would just split the playerbase. If you want a real Dreamcast 2, build a PC of your dreams and use an Xbox controller because the basic layout was copied from a DC controller. It plays all new and old Sega games and most 3rd party games :) That way you are in charge of how far ahead of PS5 and Xbox S X you want your Dreamcast to be :)
@@epicon6good point, if SEGA had found a way to keep the Dreamcast going and had all the games that went over to Xbox,PS2, and GC they definitely would have had an absolutely amazing library and could still be around.
@@chrisfern4699 Yeah i would have loved living in that alternative timeline where that happened :) There was also a shift in the business that the cost of making games increased considerably as well as in all aspects of the business, so basically only billion dollar businesses that don’t only rely in the games business could continue making consoles, and Sega was never built in that way. And even Sony and Microsoft have struggled making profits ar times. Perhaps Sega could have partnered with some large company to help fund them but the PlayStation 1 and Sony were way too strong at that point. Microsoft got into the game by being a large trusted company with the funds to do it and by launching after the PS2, so people could clearly see it’s more advanced than the PS2.
I didn't get a dreamcast until Spring of 2001, when it had already been announced that they would not be continuing production. I remember it costing $80 of my hard earned lawn mowing money. I got it to play shenmue, sonic adventures, and a few others primarily. I wish I had supported it earlier. Such a great system gone too soon. So many memories.
It was the pinnacle of multiplayer. I’ll never forget playing with four of us together or hopping online in a time where playing online was such a foreign concept
I remember a co-worker picking this up on launch day way back when and it was pretty cool looking. Still looks great! Can't go wrong with Jet Grind Radio!
Playing Phantasy Star Online was my most memorable gaming experience of all time. So ahead of its time, I spent so many hours playing that game and not sleeping. Especially when I had to run a phone cable into my room to hook up to my Dreamcast late night after my parents went to bed. Also the music and sounds of the game were amazing and always bring me back when I see videos about the game.
@@TynologyGaming The composite from a Dreamcast is very clean, ironically, as well. Image quality on older CRTs appear much clearer than both the OG Xbox and PS2.
I got a Dreamcast near after launch and remember some friends making fun of me because they knew superior systems were coming but I loved every minute of Dreamcast, one of my favorite systems. I wasn’t even a huge sega supporter just loved the arcade like feel a lot of Dreamcast games had.
I went from Genesis to PS1 to DC and it was such a great leap forward each time. Sega had the best arcade architecture at the time and I loved that they leaned into it.
For me it was Atari 2600, Genesis, Saturn, (PS1 for a few key games), Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox360, Xbox One (PS4 for a few key games), PS5. When I got the PS5 I sold the PS4 console for more than I paid for it…crazy. I also had PCs in there for a number of years during the Doom/Quake/Half Life era. Had some LAN parties back in the day…good fun!
I never owned a Sega console until Dreamcast (we always had Nintendos and we also had a PS1).. The Dreamcast in my opinion is one of the greatest consoles ever! I flip flop between The Dreamcast & N64 as far as which one is my favorite but honestly my experience with Dreamcast was like none other! I wish Sega would make a new system.
I have a Dreamcast at home and one for my retro games club at school. I have mad respect for the Dreamcast now, though I did not own one back in the day. I got my first Dreamcast very early on at the start of the pandemic. I have successfully installed the GDEMU on my personal console, but the one at the club sits unmodified still. I love how the Dreamcast is very arcade-y, but it also offers some deeper gameplay in other games. I'm not entirely sure if the more "superficial" gameplay hurt Sega. Then again, Sega was doing a lot of experimental stuff. Seaman is played with a microphone. Typing of the Dead is a zombie typing game and I love that. I always look at Gen 6 as 3D games really coming into their own. I absolutely loved my N64, and the Playstation was great, but now we play them and we have to do a lot of explaining about the low poly counts and butt-ugly aliased pixels of those consoles. Gen 6 things look like what they're supposed to look like, and the graphics hold up.
I got the DC at launch (still have it), and it was an amazing console. For its short time on the market, it had a bunch of support. It literally had really good games in multiple genres: Fighting: -Virtua Fighter 3TB -Soul Calibur -Dead or Alive 2 -Street Fighter Alpha 3 -Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2 -Street Fighter 3/Second Impact/Third Strike -Fatal Fury/ Garou: Mark of the Wolves -Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2 -Power Stone 1 and 2 -King of Fighters (99/2000/2001/2002) -Guilty Gears X -Project Justice Racing: -F355 Challenge -Metropolis Street Racer -Daytona USA 2001 -Sega Rally Championship 2 -Test Drive LeMans 24 Hr -Sega GT -Speed Devils/Online -Wacky Races -Hydro Thunder Sports: -NFL 2K -NBA 2K -NHL 2K -MBL 2K -Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 -Virtua Tennis RPGs: -Phantasy Star Online -Skies of Arcadia -Grandia 2 Platformers/action adventure: -Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 -Rayman 2 -Super Magnetic Neo -Furs Fighters -Sword of the Beserk -Shenmue 1 and 2 -MDK2 -Toy Commander -Ecco the Dolphin -Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Arena shooters: -Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram -Quake 3 Arena -Unreal Tournament -Heavy Metal Geomatrix -Spawn: In the Demon's Hand -Outtrigger Survival Horror: -Resident Evil 2/3/ Code Veronica -Blue Stinger -Alone in the Dark -D2 -Zombie Revenge Sega being Sega: -Jet Set Radio -Space Channel 5, 1 and 2 -Chu Chu Rocket -Seaman -Samba de Amigo -Crazy Taxi 1 and 2 -Rez So many good titles.
Great video Ty. You brought back some great memories. I remember buying my Dreamcast at launch and it blew me away at the time. Dreamcast was so ahead of it’s time and truly deserves so much love. Great content as always.
I had the same reaction when I got mine. I played it on a crisp VGA CRT monitor and remember being absolutely amazed with how it looked. Thank you so so much!
I’ve always been so interested in the Dreamcast despite never owning one. I grew up with most of the must plays games from this console via rereleases on other platforms & emulation and there’s just so much the Dreamcast did right. It was way ahead of its time. The sonic adventure games and marvel vs capcom 2 are easily my favourites.
Both those are classics! I’m making a video about games that should be played on Dreamcast because there are some absolute gems that fly under the radar or never left the console
I was in line to get dreamcast back in 9.9.99. I bought 2 actually. One is still sealed and other is used. Still to this day, i believe Dreamcast was the last console to be a true videogame console before it became a general entertainment machine.
That is amazing! I wish I still had my original even, but it was stolen a long time ago in a move 😓 I agree though, loved the arcade/gaming focus of the Dreamcast
Fantastic video! Dreamcast was definitely ahead of its time and it’s so underrated imo! My favorite game would have to be Jet Grind Radio! Love that game!
Man, every time I watch a Dreamcast video, the nostalgia fomo kicks in and I usually end up spending a few hundred dollars picking up games I’m still missing from my collection. Guess I’m gonna buy Project Justice this week.
I never played Project Justice! There were so many incredible fighting games on the Dreamcast and so many I'm still discovering. I sincerely apologize for inciting the lightening of your wallet 🥲
Powerstone was revolutionary. NBA 2K on Dreamcast was the best basketball game ever. Sonic games were fun all over again. Shenmue blew my friggin mind with weird content. The vmu was fun. I miss the Dreamcast. Best console ever!
Never owned one but my dad brought it once to use over the weekend from his workplace and I had it over the weekend. Favourite game was Dynamite Cop and Soul Calibur. I marvelled at the graphics, was eye candy especially coming from a PS 1
newer soul caliburs have those power levels, and unlocked mode... missing the original combo moves where each action you do continue to buildup in power to an ult instead of just a button after working up ki. where all since even SC2 you do a chain combo or half a chain it doesnt do any moves except the 1 move. which is kinda sad. so the idea of the game works best in old arcade and on dream cast only with the first game. as i remember doing 3 ivy combos and after if you did it right, she would do a dark harvest. was the best thing ever. where dream cast had the better response even over the arcade unit.
I honestly think the VMU was the selling point for me on this console. I didn't have one until I was an adult, but I love this thing. I loved the idea of having that little screen in the controller. Every game I play on the dreamcast, I catch myself looking down all the time to see what the VMU is doing. The VMUs are fun to collect too. Lol
Yesss I looove the VMU! I just wish it was fully utilized in more games. That it could connect to other VMUs was so cool, and I loved when I could use it to select options. I wish I had all the translucent color ones! I just have two standard ones.
@@cryoweasel I would be lying if I said I didn’t intend to reshell a DC to a translucent shell. They were right on the cusp and I wish we got to see what they would have done with more time/money 🥲
Fun fact: the Dreamcast analog stick used a hall-sensing design which is the hot new fad right now because it’s impossible to get stick drift like current console controllers
I got a dreamcast when they dropped the price after it was discontinued because I couldn’t get a ps2 where I lived at the time. I picked up a ton of games for it and I was blown away. I just picked up a couple broken ones off eBay to put GD Roms in to give to my kids. It makes me happy to see the system is still supported in so many ways. Looking forward to the content and I’m looking forward to modding the ones I got. I really enjoyed playing spawn in the demons hand with my brother when I first got the system. Lots of good memories.
Dreamcast was such a treat coming from a ps1 up to sonic adventure 2 and shenmue when I got mine. I HATED Sonic shuffle but when I finally sat down and decided to play through it,I actually enjoyed that too 🤣
It was not a terrible game, not at all, but it could have been better than just average and that's what made it a disappointment, if it was remade it could be brought up to Dreamcast standard, such as the load time, but the thing that ruined it for me most was the awful attrocious Yankee dub English voice acting, maybe it was a product of its time in that regard in fairness, as most voice acting was terrible in games then that were dubbed in the West, so if you're able to learn to tolerate it and look past it's flaws, it could still be salvageable if you learn to like it.
Awesome video! You got some great shot! Your information is even better though. I was blown away that you could replace the disc drive! The things we can do now are amazing. I'm not huge on Sega, but this was a cool video. I can't wait to see more
Thank you my dude 🙏 The drive replacement is amazing. Although it doesn't allow you to play the original discs anymore, it greatly extends the life of the console and makes it way more accessible. I loved my Genesis, skipped the Saturn but the Dreamcast was a gem for me. Thanks again man!
I was so upset when Sega announced they discontinued it. There were at least 70-80 games near completion by developers yet they decided to not complete them.
I still have my original console and picked up a Japanese DC and a spare Pal unit. What I really like is the modular design, I didn't want the hassle of an adapter for the Japanese DC so I swapped it out with a Pal power supply, job done. I will be putting my original back in the box and will be using a modified custom unit for my main gaming. Skies of Arcadia is rumored to be coming out but nothing is offical as of yet as well as the Soul Calibur collection.
The Dreamcast moved me from a PC gamer to a console gamer. I went PC during the SNES and Genesis. I had felt PC was the best way to game. Whether or not that was true, the Dreamcast turned my head. This was a $200 machine that rivaled a lot of the computers on the mainstream market at that time. It brought the World Wide Web to the home that might not have been able to afford a PC at that time. Online multiplayer games. Network equipment got really expensive. It was difficult to play network gaming. PC gaming was expensive because there was always something that needed an upgrade or a game that just wasn't compatible with a system. Again the Dreamcast made plug-and-play a reality. There is a whole list of reasons why I felt the Dreamcast was better than PC gaming of that time, but these were the reasons that your video invoked in me. I share your enthusiasm and love for the Dreamcast. Out of spite it would be a few years before I would own the PS2.
Couldn’t agree more. I had a decent PC but getting “accelerator cards” back then was expensive with mixed results as well. I had my DC hooked up to my computer monitor and remember being blown away with how much better it looked. I’m glad I was able to bring back such fond memories
I pre-ordered this back in 1999, I remember that I paid $212.99(tax, so that 199.99 isn't quite true sadly..)I also was aware that there was an issue of pressing GD-ROMS was there, so I went thru 4 Sonic Adventures, before I decided on NFL 2K(with the best Minnesota team ever)and got Sonic Adventure later. I've been trying out Dreamshell via Serial Port, but the route you are showing (ODE)is something I will probably do someday. After using a VGA Box I got a HDMI adapter, works great! And some of my favorites I own is: Bangai-O, House of the Dead 2, Zombie Revenge, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Snk Vs Capcom, Cannon Spike, Confidential Mission, Crazy Taxi, Dynamite Cop. It was my birthday yesterday (May 10)I turned 44! Anyway love this video. Dreamcast is great! 🖖🎮😊Marcus
Happy Birthday Marcus! I kept getting lost in Zombie Revenge making this video 🤣 I had a VGA adapter and still use one except when I’m connecting to my old CRT (for filming this). The ODE is a game changer for me and allows so much flexibility jumping in and out of games 🤘
Was constantly playing Skies of Arcadia growing up and still holds as one of my all time favorite games. I even got the keyboard/mouse for it because they became really cheap at EB Games after Sega gave up on it. I'd later use it to tinker on and was able to get Linux running on it which was one of my first times tinkering with Linux. I still have it all with the clear green case that I modded it with when I was a kid :)
Dreamcast games are definitely best played on original hardware... But I would argue that it's best to play them on a CRT TV with RGB Scart. Or even better; A CRT PC monitor through a Dreamcast VGA adapter/cable. You have these two major differences with these two options. - CRT TV with RGB cable: The Dreamcast renders at 720x480, but it super samples the image down to a progressive 720x240 causing a very sharp, yet extremely stable image without any sort of "jaggies".. This is what makes the image quality leaps ahead of the PS2's flickering 480i output. - CRT PC monitor with VGA cable: The Dreamcast renders at the native resolution, but the shadowmask of the CRT (like on the TV) causes pixels to appear much rounder compared to a modern flat screen, however, you get double vertical resolution. The downside is that not all games support VGA output. Out of 295 games only 16 games aren't compatible. This is true for HDMI adapters as well as they use the VGA signal. Anyway, you can still play the Dreamcast on a modern display, but it won't look authentic, it won't looks as clean and sharp as it did back in the days.
I agree, I mostly played my Dreamcast via VGA on my 17” Samsung CRT monitor when I originally owned it. I haven’t found an ideal permanent solution currently though
Yeah I got my Dreamcast in 2016 after watching a Adam Koralik video on it. I wanted to get the Saturn, but the games at the time were expensive they still are even more so nowadays, so I settled on the Dreamcast because I could afford to collect for it and I had a bunch of games to, but I ended up selling most of them and kept the heavy hitters. I have the rare yellow controller and the Millennium 2000 controllers and the Orange controller still. I don't know I grew to love the console and it's games. It's a shame it was Sega's last console , but it still lives on which is cool to see.
Hang onto those accessories! What a great story. I wanted a Saturn when it was announced (bc of my love for the Genesis) but I opted for the PS1. I was all in on the Dreamcast but I know it’s tough to actually collect for. Good luck!
I still have the Millenium 2000 controller as well as the vmu Just wish my fight stick an keyboard werent swiped along with a good amount of games Heck I even had the fishing rod controller for Sega Bass&Marine Fishing ( such a gem for the system an genre) Marine fishing is one of the most in depth still to this day
I am playing my Dreamcast still in 2023. Love to play the system to the fullest. This is a great video thanks for sharing your experience and love of this console!! Thumbs up all the way. Later on Jay
The Dreamcast was my first Sega console and I got mine day one. Still love my Dreamcast. I have all colors VMUs along with a 2nd console. Code Veronica is best on Dreamcast, no one can change my mind. I use a flatscreen monitor and my games look amazing!
Believe it or not, a couple years ago I bought brand new, sealed VMUs and their batteries (from over 20 years ago) still worked perfectly. I absolutely LOVE my DC and have been playing it on a 32'' Panasonic CRT using component cables and everything is razor sharp and colors just POP. It's insane how games like Dead or Alive 2 still look SO GOOD. A console truly ahead of its time. Way ahead.
The jump in graphics from n64 to Dreamcast was the last graphics upgrade you really needed. The jump from Dreamcast to ps3/360 was the last graphics upgrade you really wanted.
I have a Sega Sports Black Dreamcast, with a gdemu, dream psu, and an akura hdmi box. Some 3d games work great with the mClassic upscaler as well. Of course, I have a stock system as well, and a stack of complete games.
The Dreamcast was my very first home console. Despite I wanted a PS1 my uncle got me this one not knowing it would be such a HUGE part of my childhood and early teens. I remember I played the demos for Tomb Raider IV and Sonic Adventure (which came included on the box) for months until I finally got my hands on the real thing. A year after I got mine, Sonic Adventure 2 came out and it was a moment I would not forget, as I live in Latin America and back then imports weren't a thing as they are right now. So I waited and waited until I finally got me a copy of SA2 and I fell even harder for this console. I remember taking my VMU (clear blue) everywhere with me with Chao Adventure, and I couldn't believe how big that tiny little world was, fitting inside that memory card. Some of my all time favorites are Jet Set Radio, which I can't wait to meet back again in the near future, Fur Fighters, Soul Calibur, Dead or Alive 2, Sonic Shuffle (yes, the Mario Party rip-off by Sega), Shenmue II (it was the one I found down here), Phantasy Star Online (I remember waking up at 6am to play some of this before going to school), Metropolis Street Racing (it was one of the most impressive games I had laid eyes on until that time), Skies of Arcadia (which I'd love to see Remade or Remaster) and of course, the others that were in other consoles, like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 3. Great old days, I hope to have my own "new" Dreamcast to upgrade and relive those old times once more. Thanks for sharing!
I love comments like these, knowing that so so many people had such cherished memories like I did! That reminds me I need to revisit Sonic Shuffle and Fur Fighters again!
I played the Dreamcast, at launch, at a friend's house. I've always wanted one for some of their games and for the nostalgia. I finally got one a few years ago and managed to get most of the games I wanted for it. It's a highly underrated but legendary console. Great video my friend 👍
I feel like a vast majority of everyone that played the Dreamcast near launch fell in love with it. Always left me wanting more and more. Thanks for watching man!
PSO was and will always be my best gaming memory it was my first journey online i was completely mind blown made great friends that i still have to this day .
I remember buying the Dreamcast for playing quake 3 arena on the TV with the mouse and keyboard. Also, the vmu on the controller was awesome for quake as it was showing the map on it so you knew where you were going.
I have 4. I got my first one on release day 9/9/99. I saw it at E3 that year. As soon as I could I pre-ordered.I took the day off. Picked up my DC from KayBee Toys (with a Free T-shirt). I also got 2 VMUs, 2nd controller, NFL2K, Powerstone, Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure and R2R. I still love it. I have so much hardware. Mouse, Keyboard, so many controllers and VMUs in various colors.
I installed a gd-emu and voltage mod a couple of years ago and it's excellent. I also 3d printed an exhaust system and slotted it in to help the airflow. I then bought an HDMI out adapter. Still awesome.
That's awesome! Exactly what I would like to do to mine moving forward. As soon as I have a spare minute, I'm buying that 3D printer I've been putting off buying I promise!
Never owned a single sega console. I started getting into retro gaming December 2022 and bought some n64 consoles and games since that was my first console. This video got me thinking I should buy my first Dreamcast in 2024 and start a small game collection. I can tell I’ve missed out on this for a long time
For me, the Dreamcast was my entry to homebrew and modding. The games were great too, all the Sega exclusives makes it a must have for my nostalgia. I found all the same enjoyment from making everything work again with the GD-EMU.
I drove 70 miles to buy one on launch day. The only time i have ever done that. It was my first online gaming console. Playing Quake 3 Arena and Phantasy Star Online with my roommates are some of my best gaming memories. Started with the dodgy 56k modem and eventually upgraded to dsl. By far my favorite console ever.
The Dreamcast always seemed to me such a fascinating console ever. It feels so unique yet traditional and is true a gamer’s machine unlike most of its competition in the sixth gen. Most of the games are fast paced arcade style which takes you quickly in the gameplay without waiting for lengthy distracting cutscenes
Loading up Sonic Adventure that first time changed my perception of what was possible. I'm 41 now but i still feel that excitement like it was this morning. Time to get another Dreamcast!
Love the production value of your video. I also bought a Dreamcast when it launched in Australia. Since I moved to Japan (my original one is still in Australia), I bought a Dreamcast during the pandemic for cheap and modded with a GDEMU too. It's fantastic! So much nostalgia.
loved my dreamcast. DOA3, VF3, Marvel vs Capcom, Quake III arena, NFL 2k, House of the Dead are the ones I recall owning. But Quake is definitely the one i played the most.
Thank you so much my man! Yeah capturing a CRT is tricky - I have to shoot at 30fps at 1/60 shutter speed to avoid getting banding. Lots of trial and error haha
@@TynologyGaming I definitely feel the trial and error! What kind of camera do you use for it? I generally use my phone, but I haven't found a good app for those types of features yet!
@@ChicagoRetroGamer I'm not sure how much control you can have over most phones regarding shutter speed (frame rate is pretty standard) - but I use a couple different Sony cameras, mostly the a6300 and shoot everything manual
Last year I made a long lasting wish come true and bought a Dreamcast and instantly fell in love with the controller, which make me feel like I had a grip on life ;D
I still have my Dreamcast. It was also my first console I purchased with my own money. And I still play it on my original 32 inch TV I bought around the same time. Now its one of my retro consoles my kids enjoy playing the most. Soulcalibur, Hydro Thunder, Code Veronica and house of the dead 2. With the original light guns!
The Dreamcast was the first gaming system I purchased with my own money as a kid. I was excited to get it at launch and remember hooking it up to my dial up internet to see what you could do online.
One theory that's been bouncing around for a while is that the OG Xbox was to be a "Dreamcast II". I'm tempted to believe that, as most of the early releases were around 1.2 GB (easy to burn to DVD, NOT CD-ROM without the CDI format). But also a minor leap from the GD-ROM format.
I recently bought both a Gamecube and a Dreamcast because I never owned them bitd, this video is so nice to see because I'm keen on getting into games on them.😊
I love the Dreamcast! Still have two now. My ultimates on it are Soul Calibur and Power Stone 1 and 2! Make a point to play them through every year or so.
Had a complete setup with four original controllers and VMU, had the keyboard for “Typing of the Dead”. The Virtua Tennis games were the best. Playing Tennis 2k2 rocked! I sold my setup for over $300 last year. I emulate at 4K now and the graphics are amazing! Still love the sports games and puzzle games from that era. Sonic Adventure and it’s sequel are timeless.
My brother and I saved up our pennies and put them together to buy a Dreamcast at Babbages in the mall. A bunch of friends gathered 'round our 27" CRT TV and watched 128-bit graphics for the first time.
Awesome video, man. I picked up another Dreamcast recently. The games are so expensive though. I'm kind of praying my laser fails so I can mod it without feeling bad lol.
Yeahhh it's crazy and sad how expensive games are now. All of mine got stolen and I had so many gems, but it's tough to rebuy everything 😭 The awesome thing with the mod is that it's 100% reversible since the drive it totally modular (I have my drive packed away just in case I need it still). Thanks man!
Got mine on launch day, took a day off work special, it was the first console I ever bought myself and to this day its still one of my favourites. Toy commander was a really good game, and I thoroughly enjoyed smashing my friends at soul calibur. definitely feel the dreamcast didn't get the love it deserved and also don't think we really got to see everything it was capable of
Toy Commander and Soul Calibur were both such incredible games (I featured both in my newest video). I agree we didn’t get to see the full potential of this amazing console 🥲
I love the Dreamcast! It's my favorite console of all time! It was the last console that made me feel like I was experiencing something that I could only experience on that platform and from those developers. It was so special to me. My favorite game, still to this day, is JET SET RADIO!!!! I love it so much that last year, I bought a GDEMU as well and moded a used Dreamcast I got from eBay. I even put it in a transparent neon green Dreamcast shell and upgraded the fan, clock battery, brought a really nice Gekko Dreamcast to hdmi converter, and changed the led to Green-yellow to match that Jet Set vibe. It worked, too! The only problem is that I'm having a hard time finding places to get the games online in the format I need them. For some reason, i can't get GDI's to run in the GDemu menu, only CDI's. Or maybe it was the other way around 🤔. I can't remember, but I definitely need to pick this project back up and finish it. Watching your video gave me the itch to place some good old Dreamcast games again. If anyone knows a good place to download Dreamcast games from, please let me know! 🙏🏾 Thanks in advance!!! Happy gaming!
Bought mine on release day 9/9/99 . Still have it and the handful of games I could manage to buy . Test drive 6 , trickstyle , sonic adventure , crazy taxi, and Blue stinger .great memories .
I remember playing Grand Theft Auto 2 on Dreamcast and being stunned at how much better the graphics were compared to the PS version. The train even worked which increased the immersion lol
Great video! I'm going for a complete Dreamcast collection (releasing a video soon of what I've picked up recently, I went a little nuts). Bought mine on 9/9/99 at Funcoland. It died but I had a warranty so I have my "original" launch model which replaced a year later. And I absolutely agree, Dreamcast was one of the best. Such a shame Sega gave up on it. I LOVED Typing of the Dead, Hydro Thunder and Power Stone. Sonic Adventure 2 was also amazing. BUT probably favorite game was Code Veronica.
Yesss I would absolutely love a complete collection, that is amazing. I was shocked my day 1 lasted for years and years (it eventually got stolen in a move). All great games, although I have to admit I never played a ton of CV 😢
I'll never forget going to Toy's R US on my 12th birthday 2-23-2000 picking up the Sega Dreamcast for $199.99. One of my favorite birthdays of all time!! !! !!!
I had the SDC from opening day and loved it. My favorite gaming machine ever.
Yesssss! Man I am obsessed with your work in The Mario Movie 🤘🤘 Thanks so much for watching! 🔥🔥

@@Thebigbossofhellitself No you! ♥️
Nah, you're the GOAT 🐐
Nah, you're the GOAT 🐐
Still the only console that made me really feel like 'next-gen' was here. Everything since has been incremental and I was never quite as floored by the jump between gens.
Agreed
Pretty much this was the last time I felt this. It had an amazing arcade port of DOA2. Pretty much every gen since this has been able to pull off bigger environments, faster load times but in terms small space graphical fidelity not that much difference.
Good point
I think that's because the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox 360 didn't look exponentially better than the Dreamcast for a couple of years.
@@brandogg 360 is another gen forward compared to those other consoles. Ps2 never looked better than dreamcast but there's an argument for some gamecube titles like starfox adventure and the zeldas . Gamecube held up super well.
I loved the Dreamcast, the idea of having true arcade quality graphics at home was mind blowing.
People don't give it enough credit for what a huge leap in performance it was at the time
I never played the dreamcast, but the Saturn gave me that feeling. Seeing the Xmen vs capcom game on it was mind blowing.
@@Bristecom just played some Soul Calibur last night! Still holds up!
@@Bristecom Soul Calibur was next level. The graphics were way better than anything on another console at the time and improved on the arcade version 😎👍
My girlfriend was cleaning out the basement at her work. She found a dreamcast and gave it to me. Even had sonic adventure 2. She’s my wife now.
You're a wise man, Patrick. 🙌
Sonic Adventure 2, Virtua Tennis 1 & 2 and F355 Challenge.... Those Dreamcast games are also another hidden gem of Dreamcast catalogue.
Love it
Dreamcast was so special man.
You spoiled muffuka
Even though I eventually got and enjoyed the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox, I was always annoyed that most people bought into the hype of the PS2 and wouldn't give Dreamcast a chance, and they mostly just went for the PS2 because "It's gonna play DVD movies and have the Emotion Engine maaan!"
the VMU mini games were cool especially with Sonic Choa Garden.
@@MLife1000Sonic Choa Garden?
Years of bad decisions caught up to them. People had enough of their shit
@@epicon6good point, if SEGA had found a way to keep the Dreamcast going and had all the games that went over to Xbox,PS2, and GC they definitely would have had an absolutely amazing library and could still be around.
@@chrisfern4699 Yeah i would have loved living in that alternative timeline where that happened :)
There was also a shift in the business that the cost of making games increased considerably as well as in all aspects of the business, so basically only billion dollar businesses that don’t only rely in the games business could continue making consoles, and Sega was never built in that way.
Yeah definitely took it for granted. I wish it had a much longer life and allowed Sega to keep producing hardware
Dreamcast gave me some of the best and unforgettable gaming memories ever. DC was way too much fun that still holds up better than the rest :D
Gah I forgot to capture footage from JGR!
Yesss! My new video I talk a bit about the magical experience that was hopping onto PSO back in the day 🤩
I remember playing crazy taxi in a kiosk at Best Buy for the first time and be blown away by how much better it was than my N64.
The leap in graphics were what first sold me on it too 🤩
Funny how the N64 was a hit over the Dreamcast
The Dreamcast *is* my favorite console of all time.
Yesss let's gooo! 🤘
Cannon Spike, Sonic Adventure 2, House of the Dead 2, and Jet Grind Radio are some of my favs.
All amazing games. I missed out on Cannon Spike until recently
This is easily the most underrated retro gaming channel on UA-cam. I don't know why this channel doesn't have 100k already.
Thank you king 👑
Dreamcast games are really still much fun in 2023 for me. Most games are easy to pickup and play, and arcade feeling on a high level.
I couldn’t agree more!
Going from a PS1 to running Soul Calibur on Dreamcast was simply jaw dropping!
Running it on my 19” CRT monitor through VGA was unbelievable 🫠
@@TynologyGaming The composite from a Dreamcast is very clean, ironically, as well. Image quality on older CRTs appear much clearer than both the OG Xbox and PS2.
Soul Calibur to this day is still Amazing. When this game was released it was simply jaw-dropping.
@@AHeroInHell My students, at lunch, still love playing this 60fps visual masterpiece.
@@ridiculous_gaming It's one of the best. Fast, fluid, and slick, and like you said, a visual masterpiece.
I don't think your friends knew what they were talking about, as what came was not really better qualitatively.
You were right to purchase one. Your friends missed out. You were the winner here :)
The start up screen and sound along with the “It’s thinking” ad campaign. Iconic.
I have a tribute to the boot up screen in my upcoming video 👌

This is such a great list! I made a video about some of my favorites (not as comprehensive as this one though)
ua-cam.com/video/Rk0t_8wwUoQ/v-deo.html
Great video Ty. You brought back some great memories. I remember buying my Dreamcast at launch and it blew me away at the time. Dreamcast was so ahead of it’s time and truly deserves so much love. Great content as always.
I had the same reaction when I got mine. I played it on a crisp VGA CRT monitor and remember being absolutely amazed with how it looked. Thank you so so much!
Without the unique boot up and loud CD-Rom sounds of the Dreamcast then not the ultimate experience for me I love those sounds.
I do sometimes miss that grinding optical drive on boot up. Luckily my VMU died so at least I get the beeeep again
It was such a massive leap forward. Best console ever made
You speak the truth!
Thank you so much!! Such a classic and revolutionary game. I need to play it again, I haven't in years!
I wish I could go back in time and experience all of these things for the first time again!
Crazy Taxi, Sonic Games, Phantasy Star Online. Best console hands down.
Sonic was one of my childhood highlights . Loved it.
Such a classic! 🌀
Never owned one but my dad brought it once to use over the weekend from his workplace and I had it over the weekend.
Favourite game was Dynamite Cop and Soul Calibur. I marvelled at the graphics, was eye candy especially coming from a PS 1
Oh I forgot about Dynamite Cop, that was a good time!
newer soul caliburs have those power levels, and unlocked mode... missing the original combo moves where each action you do continue to buildup in power to an ult instead of just a button after working up ki. where all since even SC2 you do a chain combo or half a chain it doesnt do any moves except the 1 move. which is kinda sad. so the idea of the game works best in old arcade and on dream cast only with the first game. as i remember doing 3 ivy combos and after if you did it right, she would do a dark harvest. was the best thing ever. where dream cast had the better response even over the arcade unit.
@@TynologyGaming The translucent ones are the best ones. I have a translucent red one I believe. Its sad they werent utilized more.
@@cryoweasel I would be lying if I said I didn’t intend to reshell a DC to a translucent shell. They were right on the cusp and I wish we got to see what they would have done with more time/money 🥲
the Joystick was so good i can't believe it wasnt used elsewhere and the VMU was legit for mini games
Yesss! Spawn was amazing. I definitely want to pick up more and give them new life! Good luck with the modding! 🤘
Dreamcast was such a treat coming from a ps1 up to sonic adventure 2 and shenmue when I got mine. I HATED Sonic shuffle but when I finally sat down and decided to play through it,I actually enjoyed that too 🤣
I remember not loving Sonic Shuffle also, maybe it’s worth revisiting 😂
I felt like we had just got a string of great games right before the discontinuation also ☹️
Dreamcast is the most underrated console of all time.
100% this.
Yeah I want to grab one more to keep 100% stock (I do have discs!) - I've heard of a Power Stone remake also, which I think would be incredible
I love Sega Dreamcast but also the og Xbox
I went from DC to Xbox and it felt a bit like a continuation (I skipped PS2 until the very end of that generation)
And some of my favorites I own is:
Bangai-O, House of the Dead 2, Zombie Revenge, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Snk Vs Capcom, Cannon Spike, Confidential Mission, Crazy Taxi, Dynamite Cop.
Good luck!
I still have the Millenium 2000 controller as well as the vmu
Just wish my fight stick an keyboard werent swiped along with a good amount of games
Heck I even had the fishing rod controller for Sega Bass&Marine Fishing ( such a gem for the system an genre) Marine fishing is one of the most in depth still to this day
I am playing my Dreamcast still in 2023. Love to play the system to the fullest. This is a great video thanks for sharing your experience and love of this console!! Thumbs up all the way. Later on Jay
Yesss!! Glad to hear it 🤘🤘
The Dreamcast was my first Sega console and I got mine day one. Still love my Dreamcast. I have all colors VMUs along with a 2nd console. Code Veronica is best on Dreamcast, no one can change my mind. I use a flatscreen monitor and my games look amazing!
It is such a unique, almost magical feeling playing these games. I wish I still had all my original VMUs and accessories 😭
@@TynologyGaming definitely, the GameShark CDX was also a great accessory to have.
Way ahead.
That’s amazing! I used to always play on my CRT computer monitor through VGA and it felt soooo crisp!
Man. Makes me want to grab mine out of the closet. Bought it day 1. Still have Skies of Arcadia as well. Oh the nostalgia. Great video.
Thank you so much! Pull it out!
One of my favorite home game systems of all-time.
It was truly magical
The jump in graphics from n64 to Dreamcast was the last graphics upgrade you really needed. The jump from Dreamcast to ps3/360 was the last graphics upgrade you really wanted.
This is something people don’t talk about enough!
I grew up playing this little dream box and I really miss Sega's fairy dust. Thanks Sega, for all the beautiful childhood memories and dreams.
🥹🥹🥹 wish I could time travel to my first experiences
I have a Sega Sports Black Dreamcast, with a gdemu, dream psu, and an akura hdmi box. Some 3d games work great with the mClassic upscaler as well. Of course, I have a stock system as well, and a stack of complete games.
You have my ultimate setup between your two consoles 🙌🙌
I personally think the Sports Edition Dreamcast is the definitive Dreamcast to own as it continued the continuity of black sega consoles.
@@Cakebattered I loved the black version! Wish I picked one up back in the day
The Dreamcast was my very first home console.
I still have mines in an old JanSport backpack. I left it in there for so long that it turned yellow, but it still works!
Poor yellowing Dreamcasts! 😢
You shouldn't neglect a Dreamcast. It can, and will, pick up a nasty smoking habit.
The Dreamcast was better than PlayStation 2. There, I said it.
You're amongst friends here 🤜🤛
Glad to see the love still after 23 years!
"Possibly my favorite console of all time"
I'm right there with you on that.
🤜 🤛
The Dreamcast deserved a better fate.
I purchased my Dreamcast back in 2000 when I was 15. I absolutely loved playing Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Starlancer. Great gaming days. 👊🏽💯
MvC2 was so good on DC. I need to figure out if I played Starlancer. I truly miss those times 🥲

@@Hornet135 such an underrated game!
Phantasy Star Online
Yes I will die saying best launch lineup ever 9/9/99 Sega Dreamcast 🌀
Its Still Thinking…
PSO was and will always be my best gaming memory it was my first journey online i was completely mind blown made great friends that i still have to this day .
My favorite console of all time
Yesss! 🤘
I remember buying the Dreamcast for playing quake 3 arena on the TV with the mouse and keyboard. Also, the vmu on the controller was awesome for quake as it was showing the map on it so you knew where you were going.
Okay I missed out on the Q3A awesomeness on the DC! I was a big UT fan but played mostly on PC. I did grab the M&K because I hated the controls 😆
Yesss! I wish I had more accessories! I had a bunch back in the day but I’m not sure what became of them 😣
I installed a gd-emu and voltage mod a couple of years ago and it's excellent.
It's officially a sixth gen console. And it was the first one out of the gate.
Yep, I go over this at 1:39
Never owned a single sega console. I started getting into retro gaming December 2022 and bought some n64 consoles and games since that was my first console. This video got me thinking I should buy my first Dreamcast in 2024 and start a small game collection. I can tell I’ve missed out on this for a long time
It’s definitely worth checking out especially for some of the exclusives or games that were best played on the console
Amazing console and glad it's still getting the recognition it deserves. Quality of the vid was amazing too. Great job!
Thank you 🙏 I’m thrilled this video is getting so much attention, allows me to make more about the Dreamcast 🌀
@@TynologyGaming Can't wait to see more stuff like this!
For me, the Dreamcast was my entry to homebrew and modding. The games were great too, all the Sega exclusives makes it a must have for my nostalgia. I found all the same enjoyment from making everything work again with the GD-EMU.
It’s such a blast diving back into it
I drove 70 miles to buy one on launch day. The only time i have ever done that.
It was my first online gaming console. Playing Quake 3 Arena and Phantasy Star Online with my roommates are some of my best gaming memories. Started with the dodgy 56k modem and eventually upgraded to dsl. By far my favorite console ever.
I freaking love this story 🥹
The Dreamcast always seemed to me such a fascinating console ever. It feels so unique yet traditional and is true a gamer’s machine unlike most of its competition in the sixth gen. Most of the games are fast paced arcade style which takes you quickly in the gameplay without waiting for lengthy distracting cutscenes
Yes! I loved that the games were easy to hop in and out of, and almost all had a strong multiplayer component!
Loading up Sonic Adventure that first time changed my perception of what was possible. I'm 41 now but i still feel that excitement like it was this morning. Time to get another Dreamcast!
Join us! So glad I was able to re-buy!
Love the production value of your video. I also bought a Dreamcast when it launched in Australia. Since I moved to Japan (my original one is still in Australia), I bought a Dreamcast during the pandemic for cheap and modded with a GDEMU too. It's fantastic! So much nostalgia.
Yess! I love to hear it. I'm long overdue for a trip back to Japan! Thanks so much for watching!!
Plandemic.
loved my dreamcast. DOA3, VF3, Marvel vs Capcom, Quake III arena, NFL 2k, House of the Dead are the ones I recall owning. But Quake is definitely the one i played the most.
Such amazing games!
Oh man, great video! Love the video capture in it! I still can't capture video right on a CRT TV to save my life. Cheers and rock on dude!
@@TynologyGaming very cool! I've been thinking about getting an actually professional camera at some point so maybe I will look into it. Thanks!
Last year I made a long lasting wish come true and bought a Dreamcast and instantly fell in love with the controller, which make me feel like I had a grip on life ;D
You gotta see my video about the controller!
Love my Sega Dreamcast and collecting exclusives for it. Can even sense a slight hint of late 90s-early 00s movie theatre popcorn whenever I play it.
It’s the boot up screen that gets me every time
Still own my Sega Dreamcast from back in the day and a bunch of burned games as well
It’s awesome you held onto it! I wish I still had all my retail games
Yesss! I need to grab light guns to show my kids!
The Dreamcast was the first gaming system I purchased with my own money as a kid. I was excited to get it at launch and remember hooking it up to my dial up internet to see what you could do online.
I was right there with you! Saved up to buy it right away!
I’m making a video debunking Dreamcast myths. This is one of them ☝️
Bought it on launch date, still have that original launch day console, and still play it regularly. One of my favorite consoles of all time.
It was and still is such an amazing console!
Great video , big Dreamcast fan here, you got yourself a new subscriber !
You are a rockstar 🤘
I recently bought both a Gamecube and a Dreamcast because I never owned them bitd, this video is so nice to see because I'm keen on getting into games on them.😊
Glad to help! Both amazing consoles!
Are you the angry videogame nerd? You looks the same man 😂
Only thing that wowed me as much as the Dreamcast on day 1 was stepping into VR for the first time.
First time VR is definitely something everyone should experience!
I love the Dreamcast! Still have two now. My ultimates on it are Soul Calibur and Power Stone 1 and 2! Make a point to play them through every year or so.
I forgot how much I loved the Soul Calibur world map campaign thing! I always do a PS2 run also!
I would prefer the short Dreamcast catalog than anything that came in 2022-2023. The gaming industry going crazy. Utter nuts.
It's hard to compare such different generations, but I truly loved the DC's games. I have been enjoying recent games too though haha
@@TynologyGaming
why is hard?
Had a buddy who actually sold his neogeo AES after he saw how well NEOGEO games were ported to the dreamcast. I think he still doesn't regret it
Seriously. Good call at the time. Only downside is the value of that NEOGEO has gone up 🥲
Had a complete setup with four original controllers and VMU, had the keyboard for “Typing of the Dead”.
So glad you got what you wanted out of it! Emulation is a fantastic way to still enjoy the games if you don’t have the hardware anymore for sure
My brother and I saved up our pennies and put them together to buy a Dreamcast at Babbages in the mall. A bunch of friends gathered 'round our 27" CRT TV and watched 128-bit graphics for the first time.
Ah the memories 🥲
Never owned a Dreamcast but fond memories as a young kid playing Power Stone 2 with friends in Australia :)
Sometimes those memories are the best 🥲
Awesome video, man. I picked up another Dreamcast recently. The games are so expensive though. I'm kind of praying my laser fails so I can mod it without feeling bad lol.
Yeahhh it's crazy and sad how expensive games are now. All of mine got stolen and I had so many gems, but it's tough to rebuy everything 😭 The awesome thing with the mod is that it's 100% reversible since the drive it totally modular (I have my drive packed away just in case I need it still). Thanks man!
@@TynologyGaming Ooh, that's good to know. I think this will be in my future for sure. So sorry your games got stolen. That's the worst.
Yesss amazing!! I’d love to grab some more and re-shell them! JSR is a classic. I’m not sure of the issue with the GDI/CDI though 😣
My aunt got me a Dreamcast with Jet Grind Radio for Christmas. My friends and cousins would come over and we'd play all night.
Love the memories!
Bought mine on release day 9/9/99 . Still have it and the handful of games I could manage to buy . Test drive 6 , trickstyle , sonic adventure , crazy taxi, and Blue stinger .great memories .
Yess amazing! Day 1 crew!
I remember playing Grand Theft Auto 2 on Dreamcast and being stunned at how much better the graphics were compared to the PS version. The train even worked which increased the immersion lol
GTA2 gets so forgotten bc of GTA3 😢
I love how much love the dreamcast is getting, its sad that it's after it got discontinued. But it's another prime time for the little guy
Seriously, seeing all the love on this video has been amazing!
It’s amazing they sold it for $199 😱 I was right there with you! What an amazing couple years experiencing this console
Phantasy Star Online and Unreal Tournament were my jam
Both absolute classics 🫡
