  • Hey friends! I'm super honored to have Dave Powers as a guest on my channel for this video. Most of you will probably recognize him from the Dave Super Powers YT channel. Dave and his partner Shannon are the creators of the Objective Personality system which takes the original 8 functions of Carl Jung and have progressed them into a model that encompasses 512 different personality types. You can learn more about their system, methods, and class by visiting www.objectivepersonality.com
I've been in their class for about 8 months now and it's been truly a rewarding journey of learning and personal growth.
As always if you want to hang during the week you can find me on instagram: wonderbubblez
I'm a part of an amazing blog and write on many subjects including typology at: www.ithinkifeel.com/
Till next time! Leave a comment with type related or self growth topics you would like videos on!

When it comes to being a 'grammar nazi', I can't help but see mistakes in things that I read. They just jump out at me. I do not, however, feel compelled to point the mistakes out to the author unless the author has asked me to edit the work. If you ask me to edit something, be prepared to see you work picked apart, especially if you pay me for the service. A friend of mine, who is a published author, convinced me to start an editing side business a few years ago after he asked me to read a novel he was working on and I sent it back a month later just riddled with corrections and notes of advice about what he could consider changing to make the book even better.
However, if I am just reading the comments that people have made on social media, I notice the mistakes, but I do not comment back with corrections. I've even reported a few people to group admins for being abusive about correcting people in cruel ways. I never report people to the social media company itself though because I hate it when people get booted out of sites rather than given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and modify their behavior on the site a bit.

Ok after watching this at length, I definitely think I am more an Ni/Fi jumper INTJ ; tho it is slight...
but the way Dave described the differences resonated SO much to the differences in INTJ's I have noticed.
It's interesting because I feel those changes in what we value cognition wise can come about,
largely due to environmental factors. Like business owner/entrepreneurial INTJ's tend to be much more
developed in a way, and have more refined external filters. Especially if we are female.
But I will say I definitely value my own opinions & insights over tribe, tho I will at times go to the
tribe or external factors to gauge accuracy & objectivity.... largely tho, I do center my focus on what I want,
    and when I want it.
hmmm..... good video to watch. :) Also cool to learn Dave lives in Portland to!! I'm gonna sign up for
    the OP classes this month.

Consuming...the whole personality type thing is sitting on the fence for me, I know I'd like to know more, but at the moment I've got other stuff to 'eat' before I have any decent time to look at anything else.
Generally, as a 'consumer', I go as far as I need until I decide I have enough information and then I rarely go back to find out other stuff, unless I hit a question my logic can't answer based on the facts I already know.
For work, I tend to purposely keep an eye on emerging trends to keep myself in the loop and allow me to keep looking forward, though outside of such areas of life I really am not interested :) I can't be bothered with the media for the most part, and I completely get the bit towards the end of the video about having to force yourself to engage with some conversations instead of just zoning out because it's something you've either worked out the resolution to yourself within two sentences, or because as mentioned, it brings no value to 'me' :)
Certainly from a hobbies and interests perspective, I do a lot of reading (mostly non-fiction), can't get into gaming though I wish I could, I am almost jealous of those who can as it looks fun, however my work involves mostly work on computers, with the occasional client meeting where I get to talk to actual people! Hobbies revolve around martial arts, teaching for the most part...never took to any team sports, and have always been driven by me and nobody else (though from a 'romantic' relationship perspective, I am generally the pleaser, the one wanting to do things for the other though in my own INTJ way of thinking I know what they need ;) ).
Curiously it was martial arts that first got me into MBTI, mainly as my instructor years ago was keen to find out about his students to help them learn better and also get an insight into their learning styles which are strongly linked to the type. He was alledegdly by his own typing an ENTJ, he was and certainly still is extroverted...
Great interview, there's so much more to this than I'm aware of, but too much to eat for now!

As I've been watching their videos, I hear Dave and Shan talk about using science and while I love the idea, I've been dubious. I was trained as a scientist, with a B.S. and Masters degrees in biological sciences (I since switched to web design and development and business) and I know it takes years and a good bit of mentorship from other scientists to really understand how science works. Most people have no idea that science is actually all about following a very specific process called "The Scientific Method". You have to learn all the ins and outs of that method. You have to learn all about biases and how to ensure you mitigate those as well as possible using double-blind studies. You have to learn all about peer review. You have to learn statistics. I took FIVE stats classes plus they each had a lab in addition to the lecture so it was 10 actual classes.
These are all just to get started, then it takes years of experience doing research and collecting, analyzing and interpreting data to really get the hang of it. It's super fun though. As an analogy, for those in the web/dev world, it is similar to people who know HTML thinking they know how to program. True programming as in C++, Javascript, etc. where you must know how to use data structures and flow control like the back of your hand, is far more advanced than just know how to use HTML to mark up some content. But, of course it is totally doable if someone has the intention to do so. I applaud Dave and Shan for reaching for this goal because it IS needed and I know they can do it. But I have no doubt they underestimated it. Most people do. But they'll get there.
I urge them to find a good scientist to work with them. I would LOVE to do it but I am already swamped with my own passion projects on top of full time job but I think that will really help them learn more quickly and get that knowledge and experience under their belt and grow their confidence and expertise. Also, it is fortunate because INTJs make the best scientists (some say the INTPs but I think the INTJs do) and ENTJs make good scientists too so Dave and Shan are wired for this, especially Dave. As long as they tap into their inner Ti on a regular basis so as not to skip over the details. You can't let that happen. That's another reason why peer review is so crucial to good science, because other scientists will call you out on your mistakes. And having other science colleagues is critical to rounding out the team so you address all aspects of good research. As a fun fact: Einstein was an INTP and Isaac Newton and Nikola Tesla were INTJs.

    • @KayKayBayForever

I’m with you on almost all of this comment, except that INTJs make the best scientists. Wouldn’t it make sense, in Dave and Shannon’s system, for Sensory saviors to have a bit of an edge there?

    • @hfortenberry
      @hfortenberry 3 роки тому

@@KayKayBayForever INTJs and ENTJs have Se and they have plenty enough to get the job done well. But I think you need Ni/Te/Ne/Ti much more than Se. Data collection (Se) is the easy part and it's just a small part of science. The real work comes in understanding the abstract concepts, the extrapolations and applications to real-world, experimental design, statistical analysis and data interpretation. That's all N and T stuff.

The spelling/punctuation/grammar (SPG) thing is SO TRUE for me. I consider it as coming from my 6th function, "Critical Parent Ti". I have learned to just shut my mouth most of the time and just let people communicate the way they want to communicate. But I could not be with someone who had poor writing skills. I'd just have this underlying lack of respect. I know it's probably not fair but it is what it is. My boss is an ENTP and he's a SPG Nazi too. Once I've settled out with that I'll most certainly take a fresh look at where I might fall in the 512 types of OP. The OP people say it can take a good long while to finally see your own type. Kind regards, Greg

@@thoughtforfood6854 Oh I see. I don't know much about Advaita Vendanta, but I have put a good deal of time into studying some of the fundamental philosophies of Buddhism. I appreciate self-centric spiritual development over faith-based religious practices. I gather you've probably already spent a bit of time on Buddhist principals. Have you ever read the series The Dalai Lama's Cat? I like it. What type did you say your brother is? Insofar as I am aware, there is no INTF - only INTJ and INTP. As for me, I test as an INTP, and I believe that is probably accurate. I've become quite familiar with my type. It's helped me quite a bit with my own self-improvement. The beauty in the personality system is being able to see your own faults and weaknesses clearly...but I think the most surprising payoff from my research in typology is how much appreciation I've been able to have for people who reason differently. I had a somewhat limited mindset, prior to typology, that there are people who value facts and truth, and people who don't care about being wrong. Learning typology has really expanded my appreciation of what is real, and true. I have more respect for feelings, now, for instance, and I appreciate now, more than ever, how valuable they are as data, and how feelings can so often be more of a reflection of what is "real" than what we people regard as "fact". That isn't to say I devalue my method of analysis in any way, but I have a new respect for the way Feelers process the world. My best friend is an INFJ and I don't know of anyone who is more immune to bias than she is. I've also learned to respect Sensor types quite a bit. Typology studies have made me appreciate the breadth of human potential and I feel like that has been an intellectually liberating experience for me.

I'm curious what your initial MBTI test said :D
Younger people caring more about whether people understand them sounds legit.
:o I am good at spelling does that mean I'm not an INTJ? 😂 But it's so visual and intuitive for me, it's not like memory fact bizness.
I don't get upset about it unless it interferes with communication though. I kind of did more as a young teen, but I think my dad is ISTJ so that might make sense.
Going through the maze? I wouldn't chew through it, just crawl over the top, way easier. But there IS always something better :D
I think I keep getting confused about how strong my Fi is because I spent a couple years trying to figure out how to people effectively after really messing up a friendship by being, well, kind of a nutjob. Actually what got me into MBTI at all. Working on trying to a) figure out how to understand people well enough to get better expectations of them and b) understand myself enough to figure out why I was so messed up and insecure.
My consume is definitely not last. I couldn't say if it is first or not but it's definitely not last. I would be surprised if I am anything but play last 😅 ... although as Dave elaborates a little, mine hasn't really been very mature, either. It's only been really quite recently that my consume activities have been deliberate and for self improvement rather than just spending 3 days on the couch with a novel about dragons. Maybe I don't fully grasp what he means by consume. 🤷‍♀️

What does it mean if I get really annoyed and angry by hearing other people saying incorrect facts or incorrect assumptions, and I also get annoyed when somebody else keeps bothering me and is talking too much to me. What is my deamon function based on this? It is my big struggle when I have to interact with people and not get annoyed. I also procrastinate often when I have something important to do (like writing a letter of motivation). I know many people don't like me because they see me as arrogant, but I can't help myself getting annoyed by them. I hate when somebody has low standards or wants something important to be easy and complains that others have high expectations of him/her. I just plainly think those people are stupid. I know they are right when they say I am arrogant, and I am really worried I stay like this forever and will not achieve anything in life because of that. I am also afraid I am biased and that is why I can't decide what my type is. Do you have any opinion on what my deamon function might be? Is the information I wrote here even relevant to my question?

It sounds from this dialogue that you have savior Ti and demon Fe. Also in Objective Personality terms it sounds as if you have low “play”. So, what is it when you ask others for their opinions, even though you've already made up your mind? But the purpose of the survey isn't necessarily to see if you should change your mind (although it might). I've had several friends/family say to me, when I do this, "Why are you asking me when you know you're going to do what you want to do anyway?" That sounds like "self above tribe", to use your terms.
Ever since I happened upon your channel, I've heard a lot of terms I've never heard before. I recently learned about the idea of the function stack, and then, through your channel, learned about objective typing and the idea that there are 512 types, when you factor in the "subtypes," I guess they could be called. Mathematically, the 512 suggests to me that there are 32 subtypes of each of the original 16.

Okay, after watching this, I like Play but realized I definitely have Consume way over Play. I LOOOVE consuming. I get in the zone with that. I spend HOURS EVERY DAY researching the internet, YT, reading books etc to absorb as much information as possible on my interests to help me strategize optimally and position myself best to implement my long-term business goals and passion project. To give some perspective, behind me are two (of my many) bookcases and in one of them are over 120 books just on web design and development. And I have read most all of them or at least the parts I bought them for (in the case of the programming "cook books"). I have another whole bookcase full of nothing but psychology, philosophy and science books. And another 2 bookcases just on gardening, environmental, ecology and sustainability books.
This consume also sort of plays out in that I am very good at writing technical manuals because I am good at breaking down the steps for non-tech users to really be able to follow along. I spend a lot of time perfecting these manuals. At work, I'm a system administrator and developer but my two bosses always come to me to write user guides for our department. It's not my favorite thing to do but I do like it and I'm really good at it.
So yeah, my consume is very deliberate and focused for the most part. I will read a whole book in a day or too if it's not to big (larger ones I tend to read in spurts and interrupt to consume other stuff too). I occasionally go down the rabbit hole of listening to music videos on YT but that's more rare. It's like an amazing awesome addiction. The PROBLEM is that my dishes really need to get done and they don't. I need to make enough money to hire a maid.

@@InternetLiJo Sure, I get what he is trying to accomplish. Basically, you have the Hero function #1 and the Demon function #8. #2-7 are not actually listed in order of prevalance of use, but are arbitrary. Some INTJ's may be better at their inferior function (Se) over their Child function (Fi) even though the Child is higher in the list. This is where nature comes into play and outside pressure forces us to use different coginitive functions over others based on our experiences. But this is an ever evolving thing. That personality system is overly complex when it doesn't need to be and typing someone that way is merely taking a snapshot of how they are currently. Which will change.

Interesting, I love it! I’ve found you can use it to see functions in the same person younger, older, whatever. It’s not “easy” but I think a more comprehensive system allows for a greater degree of understanding. It’s not something the personality community has seen before, so there’s likely to be resistance. What I can say is, when I apply the parts I’ve learned, it works, in real life. Not just “typing people” but understanding people’s brains very specifically and leveraging your communication to their functions. I honestly feel like I have an unfair advantage in interpersonal communications now. Luckily... I’m not an asshole lol. All in all, it’s what I do for fun, so... yep!

@@InternetLiJo Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are parts that are useful. Listen to all, follow none. I think you will find great use out of C.S. Joseph's channel and how it covers the 4 sides of the mind. (Ego, Unconscious, Subconcious, Super Ego). Hint, each side has its own personality type. INTJ subconscious is ESFP, but this is an easy one that you probably already knew about. Our unconscious is ENTP and super ego is ISFJ. The whole way he explains it just makes a ton of sense. I would start with his explanation of Who are the INTJ's just so you know that he gets it. Then watch any other video that peaks your interest (Aka probably all of them).
