Kentucky Buck

- The Kentucky Buck was created by bartender Erick Castro for Polite Provisions, the award winning bar in San Diego. There is an indication that this drink could possibly have been originally created for the Rickhouse, another bar Castro consulted on. If Erick Castro watches this show and wants to weigh in with any info, please feel free. This cocktail takes it's inspiration from the Buck, a classic Highball drink which utilizes lime and fresh ginger syrup added to any base spirit and served lengthened with soda water. The buck was the origin cocktail which (I think, history is a little muddled on this point) gave birth to the Moscow Mule, one of the few classics created in Los Angeles, CA.

One of my favorites, love bourbon in a cocktail or by itself.
Holy Moses, that is one fine drink. Kinda like a punch. So good!👍🏼👍🏼
I usually tend not to drink during the working week, but I guess I've found what to drink tonight! Thanks Leandro, this sounds perfect!
Fantastic!
"GINGER AND STRAWBERRIES DUDE !"

Erick Castro is the man
My name's Buck and I like to Kentucky
Also, nice tip on pouring the ginger beer
Now thats original. I am definitely gonna try that.
Dude! Just made this cocktail...... it’s delicious!!!!!!!!!!!
Mmmm. I'm very interested in this one, and the high proof bourbon sounds lovely. The garnish looked perfect too.
Thank you
Great videoo!! Keep on this good work!
Greetings from Brazil!
I mixed of version of this cocktail with Angostura Bitters and it was very good.
Can’t wait to try this drink. Bonus: I have all the ingredients in the house!
Leandro : I have to talk a certain way so Marius has an easier job editing.
Marius : (Immediately after) "2 Oz. Burbon."
Ooohhh, that looks real tasty. Tried my hand at the "AMF" last night. Proved to be very popular :)
Didn't have strawberries so I substituted blueberries instead, still really nice. Thanks!
Wow
Any good pre-made ginger syrups to use? I usually make my syrups fresh but I don't wanna buy ginger because I make them in small batches and don't want to waste any ginger.
Hell yeah castro! Have you seen the bartender at large film?
You could do a variation with a strawberry ginger shrub.
Hey Leandro, I've got a newbie question- can I, and if so in what proportions, switch a hard to get juice like passion fruit for a passion fruit mixer, like the ones made by Monin?
If I may; I think you can, but you might have to adjust for sweetness. I've never used fresh passion fruit juice itself in cocktails, but I have used syrups. IMO Monin passion fruit is about as good as homemade fresh passion fruit syrup. My advice is to try it and see how it works out. Start out with a 1:1 ratio and adjust from there.
But be careful with other fruit syrups/mixers, as they might not be as good in comparison to the fresh made syrups or juices.
Hey Leandro and Marius, nice video as always! Just wanted to let u guys know that the recipe in the description is missing the muddled strawberries!
Cheers!
Leonardo Sanini oh thanks! Will fix!
Hey boys, solid video. Can you please pass on the ginger syrup recipe? Muchos gracias
was 2:11 a shot at a borat impression?
I've read that the Buck cocktails use ginger ale and the Mule cocktails use ginger beer. Maybe that's not the case in this cocktail...? Anyway thank you for the great contents!!
You should try this drink I whipped up that this video reminded me of! It's 1 oz lime juice, .5 oz raspberry syrup, .5 oz ginger syrup, .5 oz giffard banane du brasil, 1 dash angostura, .5 oz plantation OFTD, and 1.5 oz dark rum (I used pampero anniversario), topped with soda water (~4 oz, I used a big hurricane glass). I love the combination of ginger and fruit. Btw I use non-heated syrups which gives it a really fresh flavor, and my ginger syrup was not very sweet so it ends up being not too sweet.
Fiddler what’s the name of the cocktail?
@@TheEducatedBarfly I'm really bad at coming up with names so I haven't named it yet!
If you used scotch instead and swapped the simple for honey syrup, it would be like a bubbly, carbonated penicillin!
Question: why double strain the strawberries out? Seems like the muddled strawberry would really add a nice extra pop of flavor and texture.
Side note: I cannot wait to get home from work and try this!
Do you work in a bar that uses large format ice or are yall using ice cubes from a machine?
We make our own cubes :) See our video on how to make them. The pebble ice we buy from our local ice company.
You know what rhymes with buck? Right. And I want to get effed up on this drink!
You sound fun
@@sethbrolsma516 I'm young, fun and full of bad puns! And jokes, homeboy!
So what's the main differences between a Kentucky Buck and Kentucky Mule? Or is the only difference being the added Lemon Juice instead of Lime and the added Strawberries?
Bucks are usually done with fresh ginger syrup as opposed to a mile done with only ginger beer a mule is like a stripped down buck
He did a video on kinda funny on how to make it
Ginger syrup, simple syrup and ginger beer? Isn't that pretty sweet with just 0,75 lemon juice?
ti sch the strawberries are a sour element as well :)
Jón Hafsteinsson since when hahaha strawberries are sweet
It seems pretty dilute because it's a tall drink (coca cola for instance is sweet but also balanced), and I think you're also balancing the heat from the ginger with sugar. The sweet/sour ratio is the same for a gin gin mule which is one of my favorite summer drinks.
I didn’t have strawberries so I used an amazing tree-ripened peach. Does that make it a Georgia Buck?
Maybe if you use peach brandy as your base spirit you could call it a Georgia Buck.
@5:45
Burbon
Would like more simpler drinks as well without too much fancy in them 🙂
Why do bartenders use that awkward grasp when holding bottles and jiggers, where they hold them between the index and middle fingers? Also, I notice that they pour backhanded. Is it just for show? Do they teach that in bartender school?
Cas Amezcua it’s a matter of style I think really, showmanship is part of the job for sure
Does this really count as a modern classic? A Buck is fairly classic cocktail that's just spirit, citrus, and ginger beer. You could have ordered a whiskey buck in a bar in 1940 and they would have known what you wanted. I'm not sure calling it a Kentucky Buck and specifying Bourbon is enough to make it modern.
Andrew Beck I think it’s considered a modern classic because this specific variation is on menus/called for around the world
It’s a modern classic because this is a modern twist on a buck and a damned good one too
I thought that a mule used ginger beer, while a buck uses ginger ale. What gives?
Why do Americans insist on tipping?
Jack007 the question is why do other countries feel that they don’t have to?
The Educated Barfly Because your employer should be paying you appropriately. I’m already paying for the service.
Jesse Watkins it’s twisted thinking. Employers have such thin margins that they’ll never pay “adequately “ and honestly you’re not paying for the service, you’re paying for the drink, the service, if done properly is worth much much more
The Educated Barfly If the business can’t afford to pay their employees than they shouldn’t be in business (regarding long term employees) Guilt tripping people to tip because the employer can’t run an efficient business is not the consumers fault. In Canada we are so high taxed that tipping is impossible.
