Not sure it needs the bitters. Thinking of calling it a “Sherrye”. Give it a try if you like sherry.

I'm confident you had as much or more fun making this video as we did watching it! And that's pretty awesome! Maybe do a part two of 'the highball' with bourbon and also different waters, like tonic and sparkling mineral??
I think this is the first time I've watched the show, but I liked this episode. I like the idea of making the same drink with different types of the same liquor to see how the drink evolves. Your tasting notes really give a good idea of how the drinks transform. Then adding the lemon later, which I almost always add lemon or lime to my cocktails too, made the experiment even more interesting because for some it seemed to change the drink a good deal.
I thought the last few episode were a bit stale or rushed. This reminds me a lot more of the roots of the channel back when you only had 16k subs. Great job! So happy to see this again!!
Laphroaig is like getting hit in the face with a basketball while sitting next to a dowsed campfire covered in seaweed on the beach. Rubbery, phenolic, medicine cabinet, alcohol, sea salt, smoke, smoke, smoke: Awesome.
I've never really gotten the rubber notes on Laphroaig. I describe it as imagine taking a good thick rib-eye steak. Totally encrust it in salt and throw it on a charcoal grill. Just as it's approaching done and the juices are starting to flow, pick it up, hold it over your mouth and let them drip into your mouth. Lick the salt crust before swallowing while breathing in the charcoal smoke. Delicious.
@@wingracer1614 Hits me about like walking into a housefire, going to the medicine cabinet, pulling out the iodine, chug the iodine and sniff rubbing alcohol at the same time. Laphroaig, and Islay's in general, are not drinkable to me in any way. Young or old. Have unfortunately wasted a fair few dollars to figure that out.
The first time I had Laphoaig it was drinking a fireplace. I was overwhelmed. But wait for it and the leather and salt and caramel comes through. It’s a fabulous whiskey.

I love highballs, they are everywhere in Japan. Suntory whiskey and Ginger beer was at every restaurant. I would really love to see what you could do that is inspired by the Cherry Blossom festival in Japan.
To me the most impressive is how many cigars he smoked per day. Even though you don't inhale cigars you still absorb nicotine through your lips and mouth. In fact the average Cigar has about 200 mg of nicotine which is enough to kill you. The fact he smoked 8+ cigars per day without at least getting sick was incredible.
I've smoked one Churchill sized cigar, ever. I'm not an infrequent cigar smoker, but I thought I was going to vomit about 3/4 of the way through, and felt like my heart was doing something funny. Like an idiot, I finished it, and the symptoms got worse, but they wore off over the next several hours.
@@brandonp7503 yes. that's nicotine overload. i get it too. i like a medium strength Robusto. I feel like that's my wheelhouse. never fun to get sick from a cigar.
Thank you sir for introducing me to the scotch and soda. Probably my new favorite go-to drink. The tart bitterness of carbonated water really lifts the best parts of the woody, smokey, sweetness of the scotch. Definitely an acquired taste I think but a surprisingly good classic for a reason
Churchill was a man of his time, and that generation and class could and did drink... what we would now consider heavily. Also, try using Hanky Bannister. This is reputed to have been Sir Winston's preferred blend.
I looooove Laphroaig. Ardbeg 10 is another great scotch. I'm a big fan of big, smoky, peaty flavours, so my favourite way to drink it is neat. I don't think I'd ever mix it. Walker Red seems more suited for this kind of thing. I kind of want to be punched in the face by a campfire when I have a scotch. When I started drinking scotch, I never really got why people would describe these "oil" and "leather/iodine" flavours, but I definitely get them now, and that's never a bad thing.
Don't be afraid to mix them. Sometimes magical things can happen. I too usually drink my whisky neat but I also get a craving for an Irish coffee every now and then. When I do, I just use whatever whisky I have on hand. Sometimes it's an Irish whisky, sometimes it's a bourbon. A couple weeks ago the only thing I had in the house was Laphroaig. Let me tell you, that was a damn fine coffee.
I loved this episode, I've only found your channel recently but as a way to vicariously enjoy these drinks I'm loving your videos. Keep up the good work sir!

Never realized I wanted an HTD and Whiskey Vault collab until now. Really enjoyed this style of video!
I'd love to do something with those guys!
When you first talked about Laphroig, I though you said La Croix and was very confused...
i love how he was the only one allowed to smoke during strategy meetings cause... well he was Winston Churchill
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Alcohol, history, and entertainment. Couldn’t ask for more!
Different episode - like it!
Did some fiddling around today and came up with something I’m not too ashamed of - 6 cL sherry, 2-3 cl rye, barspoon maraschino luxardo, barspoon of the juice from maraschino cherries (I use amarena fabri) and maaaybe a dash orange bitters. Not sure it needs the bitters. Thinking of calling it a “Sherrye”.
Give it a try if you like sherry.
The funniest thing just happened, when you said scotchman it cut to an ad for scotch tape, bravo UA-cam, you people may have a sense of humour after all...
This is my absolute favorite UA-cam channel to watch! Just recently came across it after a bunch of signature cocktails at an alchemy bar on mine and my husband’s honeymoon cruise and it’s my newest hobby thanks largely to you! Keep it up! This is some good stuff you’ve got going on!
I think this is awesome! I would love to see drinks related to historical figures, Hemingway comes to mind, for example. Love your show, and love the decor! Cheers!
"It tastes like burning" XD +1 for Ralph
Finally
Loved this video! More tasting sessions like that would be great 👍
"Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." W. Churchill
Dude I'm binging your content and your whole channel is amazing, watching every ad all the way though just for you
I loved the episode! A little history, making drinks, and some experimentation while throwing in a taste comparison. Thanks for a great show.
Always happy to see a new episode out. Keep em commin
Loving the new intro style with the theme of the drink playing in the background!
This is great! I love the idea of "Variations on..." videos. Keep up the great work, man!
Thank you!
While I truly enjoy all the content from this creator, this was one of my favorite episodes! Thank You!
Thanks! I think!
@@howtodrink I think... constructive criticism? Keep doing what your doing and enjoy that you do it! Sub' d for the life of the channel!
Man, tipsy Greg is a talker :D loved it
OHHhhhh i'm the talkinest.
Once again... tears are falling from my face from laughter!!🤙 keep it up
Such a pleasure to watch after a rough day at work...thank u!💕
Laphroaig is like getting hit in the face with a basketball while sitting next to a dowsed campfire covered in seaweed on the beach. Rubbery, phenolic, medicine cabinet, alcohol, sea salt, smoke, smoke, smoke: Awesome.
I think your thinking of Lagavulin 16.
Sweaty shoes, burned rubber, acetone. 4 out of 5 stars.
The first time I had Laphoaig it was drinking a fireplace. I was overwhelmed. But wait for it and the leather and salt and caramel comes through. It’s a fabulous whiskey.
I’m a watching lurker, not a engaging commenter. I really enjoyed this style of show. More please, sir.
The best description of peat alternatives i've ever heard
"Campfire, Leather, Earth, Carbon, Exhaust Fumes, That spray you use on your throat to numb it"
I'm a red head, ardbeg corryvreckan ftw~
Bloody OUTSTANDING episode chap... keep these rollin with scotch and Irish, SLAMDUNK hits.
Ran into your channel by complete accident, and I'm glad I did! You're very enjoyable to watch and listen. I especially liked the research into the subject matter, and the man behind it. And yes, I'm going to try a Churchill highball now. Thank you for the education!
I'm getting deep into a bottle of Irish whiskey and I can't believe that I found this channel. What an awesome coincidence. Subscribed :) Churchill was a beast for the alcohol.
Brilliant episode Greg
Loved the video. I have a quest for you though, do you intentionally try to spill the alcohol when pouring it into the glass?
Great work buddy. Love the tasting notes on this one. Great descriptions mixed with historical anecdotes. Can't go wrong. Never above never below always beside you dear sir.
This song is going to be in my head for days.
Great Video. God bless.
I’ve never cried patriotically at an intro before
Never was so much owed by so many, to so few.
Leaders used to be leaders!
I love this host, I just want him to succeed, he's so likable.
Aww thank you!
I really like this approach: taking significant historical figures (politicians, authors, celebrities, etc.) and analyzing their favorite drinks!
Histories Great Drinkers doesn't sound bad!
I really appreciated the deep dive into a simple drink. This is a lot more approachable and something more realistic in ordering at a bar or making at home. Thank you!
Love this episode, beautiful change of pace where you break down the flavor profile of subtle changes. I do like the style.
Great episode! I loved the little plane tracker at the bottom.
I'm so down for this kind of video. Do more with other types and other notes.
Seeing the comments of my fellow Whiskey Vault /Whiskey Tribe fans makes me smile!
The whisky tribe is magnificent....
You bastard. LOL
Going from the Whiskey Vault to this, is like going from Major league baseball to single A baseball.
Love how you get increasingly "fun" after every drink. Great videos Greg!!!
Yeah it's tough to translate tasting notes into something I can't assume someone has experienced
Ardbeg/Laphroaig are my favorite winter whiskies.
My favorite part about my bottle of Laphroaig: "Tastes like kissing a mermaid who just ate BBQ."
My all time favorite is Lagavulin 16
Another great episode Greg, thanks for that. Did you know we call soda+salt+lemon juice trio ‘Churchill’ in Turkey?
I had no idea
Best episode yet, and that's not just because of my love of Laphroaig and Monkey Shoulder
I loved this episode, I've only found your channel recently but as a way to vicariously enjoy these drinks I'm loving your videos. Keep up the good work sir!
I enjoy how deep you went into the tastes on this episode. Makes it much easier to imagine each drink.
I can just imagine comparing leather notes by licking leather sofa.
I just got my first Scotch. Laphroaig 10 year. Literally taste like you're drinking real leather.
"Might swap out the peas for something else..."
I dunno man, I mean, you gotta eat your peas.
Is that Bridge on the River Kwai playing while he’s talking about the Laphroaig?
This is such a change from your regular contect, but I love it.
Very well played in my opinion. I enjoyed the tasting notes explanation, and the extended half drunk historical comments . I found it very funny
Banana funk is my definition for jack Daniels, not a critique, I enjoy it a lot.
This type of episode is fine, but I wouldn't want every week to be this way. I think I still prefer cocktail episodes.
