Drinking Four Scotch Highballs like Winston Churchill | How to Drink

- Опубліковано 29 лис 2018
- This week I taste four Scotch Highballs in honor of Sir. Winston Churchills birthday. Things get a bit loose, I hope Sir. Winston would approve...
**********************************
The Scotch Highballs doesn't really fit the definition of a cocktail, it doesn't include a sweetener or bitters or citrus by default. It's nothing more than Scotch and Soda in truth, but cocktail or not, Scotch and Soda is a barroom staple, so I've got to talk about it.
Sir. Winston Churchill is one figure who loved a Scotch Highball. He was quite famous for drinking them frankly all day long, certainly not a habit I'd want to encourage, however I thought the anniversary of his birth was a perfectly suitable excuse to talk talk about highballs. Huzzah!
So, in this episode of How to Drink I make four Scotch Highballs and give tasting notes on each. It's surprising how much the addition of a simple lemon twist can alter the flavor profile of all of these! If you're interested in scotch, or whiskey, or just want to see me slowly get drunk on camera, get on in here!
Scotch Highball
2 oz. or 60 ml. Scotch
4 oz. or 120 ml. Soda

Oh sure, when Churchill drinks on the job, he’s considered a historical legend, but when I do it I’m “fired from Uber” and “under arrest” smh
ong bro uber is a bunch of bitchez
What a shame... unbelievable disgrace
Haha
"This place brews 10,000 golden delicious beers a day... I drink 45 off the assembly line and I'M the asshole???"
one must first be voted to high office to be able to drink on the job.
"I'm gonna do a proper 2 ounce pour"
Proceeds to spill like 3 ounces
I fix those off camera lol
I guess it is one of those things that look great one camera especially in slowmo, but which one wouldn´t do in real life @@howtodrink
@@eberbacher007 I hope so. Those shots activate waste rage.
@@howtodrink try pre-pouring prior to getting drunk. Hilarious. Great video!
Party foul!
Spillages mean his desk has the highest alcohol content of any thing in the video.
Classic editing trick, he cuts the parts where he licks up the spillage.
I used to hate the "spill-cam" but now I kinda look forward to it.
imagine how the room be smelling.. also he be spilling scotches... breaks my heart
@@NieroshaiTheSable I can't get used to it... Really ticks me off no end. What's the sense of measuring if you're going to spill so much of it?
Now, I suppose he's chucking it in quickly, because he's making slow motion footage, but get a better handling jigger, man. A rounded jigger looks nice, but a conical one (like a Japanese-style) pours much more predictable.
@@Bebop_2962 he explains it in the comments in a different video. But they make a master video in the normal camera set-up. And then he makes the drink again with the close ups. But because of the lighting and stuff he needs his hands in awkward positions. Something to that effect
I got hired as a bartender in a resturant, and I am pretty much self training myself. You sir are helping a lot!
how’ve you held up 2 years in?
3 years in?
"Winston, you are drunk, and what’s more you are disgustingly drunk."
"My dear you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober* and you will still be ugly." (*debatable)
-W.C. the savage
Is there any truth to this one? You see it quoted so often
I used a variation of this one when I was really fat...
"One day I will lose this weight and I'll look fine but you will always be ugly"
He mercilessly bullied me for a whole semester and on the six week break I lost 20kg (44 pounds)...
He then mercilessly bullied me about having a personal trainer (I got 3 free PT sessions with my gym membership, I used 1)...
It's a brutal comeback and I really don't care if he or someone else said it because it's good comedy...
@@howtodrink It's said is fake but I like to believe he said it. He also supposedly received a call from the Lord Privy Seal while sat on the toilet: “Tell him I can only deal with one s**t at a time.”
@@howtodrink It sounds quite similar to a true quote from him where a woman once said to him: "If I was your wife, I would poison your tea." and he replied:
"If I was your husband, I would drink it."
Classic and epic WC burn.
‘I hate the Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion’
Half the enjoyment of this video is just watching you get increasingly buttered as it goes on :)
Literally as soon as you said “what does malt taste like,” I said to myself “well, I sort of think of it as tasting like Cheerios without any milk or sugar, but with a ghost of a sweet flavor...” Five seconds later, you described it just that way. I’m weirdly pumped by that, since I really don’t have any practice at doing tasting notes.
It's like the corn flakes notes in bourbon. They hate when I say it tastes like cornflakes.
To me it's Milk Duds without the Chocolate, or a Malt (milkshake) without the Ice Cream.
"Lets try Laphroig"
Ah, so you have chosen *peat.*
I always thought it tasted medicinal.
More like rat poison to me, a non whisky-drinker
Peat taste like medicine??? What are you taking?
I drink Laphroig when I am upset.
God I love Laphroaig. I've been waiting forever for this to pop up in a HTD video. Mainly, I like it by itself, but I did a Kilt Krawl in KC where they showcased a ton of Laphroaig cocktails. I don't remember any of them enough to remember ingredients, but they were all incredible
Fun fact about unhealthy living. Sr Winston ate horrible fatty food, drank like crazy and smoked like a chimney.
He died of a stroke at the ripe old age of 90.
It was the naps.
Honestly I think he was pretty stress free despite navigating the war and everything that went with it. I’m going with “low stress” being the winning formula.
He was also a soldier and very athletic in his younger years.
My family has a history of heart disease and diabetes so I'd probably die within five minutes of taking up that lifestyle.
@@franzfanz You better go all out, then
You can't pick when or how you're going to die, the former oldest recorded person took up chain smoking in his 80s because he was sick of life, he lived to 117...
Live life however you want, it's not like it's permanent or anything...
There are very few cocktail videos like this, where you're playing with the variables and noting the huge differences subtle changes make, I think this is a good and unique direction to take for your videos every now and then (too much and it would get too geeky and niche). I watch loads of cocktail videos and this is the first one I've ever really seen that nails that subtle changes=big differences dynamic that makes cocktail making so much fun and an art form. I don't think you'll get instant big spikes of likes with this sort of thing but over time you'll get some people deeply appreciating the uniqueness of your content.
Ditto, this is probably one of my favorite vids on the channel because of this. It really helps me decide what directions I want to experiment more with.
Hello Greg, I am new to your channel and enjoying it very much. The taste profiles are fascinating, I agree overall with Paul. You make drinking an art form! I saw a video on Facebook called HOW TO DRINK. Thought it was a crazy topic as drinking, for addicts can destroy lives. You make it an art form and heighten the appreciation factor for people who only occasionally enjoy a drink. If you are going to drink, know what you are doing and savor it. Thank you for all your research and your knowledge base in movies and what not. Yes, I watched quite a few of your videos today. Am from NJ, and appreciate your references to the state. OH, wanted to mention, that peat note, I get what you are saying about the petrol diesel fuel fume taste. I think also that for people from Ireland and other countries that use peat to heat home it also has a deep connection to home for them. just mentioning. not a criticism. Thank you again for such an entertaining presentation with each video, even the edits, which I love and have laughed over repeatedly. sometimes they sound like the chatter in my head when critiquing myself talking. fun stuff.
Yeah all this becomes crazier when you learn that he’s never been a professional bartender
I agree
Well said. This was one of my favorite episodes!
Drinking game: Every time he mentions "leather", take a drink. Obliterated before the end of the video.
I could do the same thing with weed, and have the same outcome. 🥴😁🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sometimes I wonder if they intentionally pour things with a lot of spilling specifically for the eye porn. Or maybe its just being drunk...
I was born and raised in New Orleans and went to school in the French Quarter as a boy and listening to your videos with its New Orleans style music. After school walking the quarter with friends hearing musicians and up to mischief, takes me back every time. thanks man.
Watching that Laphroaig-tipping-point from sober Greg to tipsy Greg was very, very enjoyable.
Also, I'd kind of love to see you do these in reverse order to see how the tipsiness effects you oppinion. You know... for science!
Those light scotch highballs like Churchill drank all day…. I’ve added a small splash of scotch to my bitters and soda. What a combo. Practically alcohol free but very tasty
“How To, you’re drunk.”
“Yes, but you’re ugly.”
“How To! You’re drunk!”
“Yes, but in the morning I will be sober, but you will still be ugly.”
I never comment on anything, but please PLEASE start a tasting note type series of videos. This was incredibly interesting and fun to watch!
Agreed
AGREED!
In the same boat! More of this please!
Agreed!
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. You're literally teaching us "How To Drink" Scotch & Sodas; color me informed. I definitely wouldn't have thought about how each scotch is changed by the seltzer. Awesome! More of these.
You certainly aren't a scotch drinker on the regular then my friend
When I was in Japan last spring, I bought a bottle of my go-to scotch.....Talisker 10. In the container, there was a packet of peppercorns. I did the Google thing, and found that the Japanese enjoy talisker in a highball with ground pepper on top. Try it out....its great! Although, I still prefer it neat.
Talisker has a peppery character to it even before you add any pepper to it.
What you didn’t have Santori?
@@diemman70 it was probably duty-free...still, I too would have tried a japanese one :)
I'm stammygastered!
i love how he was the only one allowed to smoke during strategy meetings cause... well he was Winston Churchill
It’s incredibly entertaining to see your level of intoxication increase as the video goes on.
Stick around, it’s a common theme
As a novice scotch, whiskey, and bourbon drinker who appreciates the subtleties I very much appreciate this analysis.
I finally got my hands on some Monkey Shoulder Scotch today. It had been out of stock all over my area (Columbus, OH). I sipped on some neat and now I am trying it with 1 cube of ice. It is amazing!
Welcome, brother. You are one of us now. Mind you, it only gets better the more you drink so drink up :)
Try the laphroaig 10 year! I get lots of herbally notes on the mouth and nose not just the smoke and leather, metal, petrol, and salt ocean type notes he was "how to" was talking about. It is very complex if you can get past the smoke, Lol. Not the only oak wood campfire type smoke it's like.... Burning fresh sagebrush while camping in essentially the Wyoming Sahara type areas kind of smoke. 😂 That's just what I have experience with and can connect.
@@greenmarcosu Monkey Shoulder is wonderful stuff. Try Angel's Envy, Bulleit (the Rye is especially fantastic), and Jameson's Black if you haven't already. Avoid the Islay's, especially Laphroaig. Try it at a bar if you can before investing in a bottle, only to find out it is terrible. He says it's "challenging" in the video because too many folks would have a fit if he said it was bad. Who wants to drink diesel soaked, mossy leather? Not me, but whatever makes you happy I guess.
Definitely more videos like these! As a working bartender I love all the info you give in this video. I still enjoy your quirky videos where you try to recreate drinks from books, movies and video games. They're fun. But this video has real utility. Love love love.
You did amazing with this episode; if you could manage something similar with other historical figures, that would be awesome. Whether you craft the drink yourself based off of history, or whether you take the drink from something they typically tended towards themselves :)
The word you're looking for when describing Johnny Walker red is 'rust'. You're welcome ;)
yeah id like to see more of this, learning about what drinks famous people of history drank
Yes!
@@howtodrink One has to say that Red label was much better back than then it is now. Back in those days there were not that much of a fuss about age statements so Johnny Walker could also often buy stock that was getting old at other distillers that they couldn´t sell fast enough and they would put 20 year old scotch into the red label.
Do Hemingway!
@@eberbacher007 but you could just get black label and its basic the old red label.
I would also like to see more of this

Churchill to Woman: "And if you were my wife I'd take it."
The quote was a bit different. Woman said to him: "If I was your wife, I would poison your tea." To which he replied: "If I was your husband, I would drink it."
@@freddymars2014 alright, Fred, don't get your panties in a knot.
Churchill was the original king
There's more to it. It begins with the woman saying "You are drunk Sir!" to which Churchill replied "Yes madame, but you are ugly. And in the morning. I'll be sober."
@@cb_norwood there is more to it as well, he was actually in bed with her at the time.

this was a surprise , a pleasant one nonetheless.
Will you be watching my career with anticipation Lord Palpatine?
How To Drink A man of your talents?
Traditionally the peat comes in when malting the barley. When germinating the moist barley, heat is applied by burning peat bricks. The peat smoke leaves a deposit residue of oils and flavor that come through the whole distillation process. Just FYI...
To be more precise, the peat heat/smoke is used to STOP the malting of the barley. Keeping the sugars in the cute little malt sprouts that will soon make the best spirit the universe has ever seen. LOL
This is my absolute favorite UA-cam channel to watch! Just recently came across it after a bunch of signature cocktails at an alchemy bar on mine and my husband’s honeymoon cruise and it’s my newest hobby thanks largely to you! Keep it up! This is some good stuff you’ve got going on!
I’m a grad student in Churchill College, Cambridge. We do a toast for Sir Winston after every formal and I’m sure he would be especially proud to know that the grad students run a private bar for ourselves. Gotta follow Pops' example!
I liked it, go Hemingway next time
Dorian Xanyn is a Hemingway just straight whiskey from a bottle until you black out?

I loved the episode! A little history, making drinks, and some experimentation while throwing in a taste comparison. Thanks for a great show.
I really like the way you describe tasting notes in liquors. As a mixology hobbyist, I’m always finding ways to expand my vocabulary and mental models for tasting. Also your style of humor fits really well.
Keep doing episodes like these every now and then!
"It tastes like burning" XD +1 for Ralph
Finally
Favorite episode yet! More historical episodes, please! And more scotch cocktails... :)
While I truly enjoy all the content from this creator, this was one of my favorite episodes! Thank You!
I loved this episode, I've only found your channel recently but as a way to vicariously enjoy these drinks I'm loving your videos. Keep up the good work sir!
Great concept Greg! Suggestion for next time: "Driking [any number of] Daiquiris like Ernest Hemingway". Would love to see you give tasting notes on a series of white rums in the same style as you did here.

Maybe he was just wearing strong-smelling new shoes on that day.
This is a cocktail that can really open you up to a different perspective on the whisky flavour profile. Well done!
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Alcohol, history, and entertainment. Couldn’t ask for more!
I'll level with ya, Greg, I love learning how to drink but I think most of us keep coming back every week for you. Do more of whatever makes you happy, and good content will follow!
Love this episode, beautiful change of pace where you break down the flavor profile of subtle changes. I do like the style.
Ran into your channel by complete accident, and I'm glad I did! You're very enjoyable to watch and listen. I especially liked the research into the subject matter, and the man behind it. And yes, I'm going to try a Churchill highball now. Thank you for the education!
Laphroaig is like getting hit in the face with a basketball while sitting next to a dowsed campfire covered in seaweed on the beach. Rubbery, phenolic, medicine cabinet, alcohol, sea salt, smoke, smoke, smoke: Awesome.
I think your thinking of Lagavulin 16.
I've never really gotten the rubber notes on Laphroaig. I describe it as imagine taking a good thick rib-eye steak. Totally encrust it in salt and throw it on a charcoal grill. Just as it's approaching done and the juices are starting to flow, pick it up, hold it over your mouth and let them drip into your mouth. Lick the salt crust before swallowing while breathing in the charcoal smoke. Delicious.
@@wingracer1614 Hits me about like walking into a housefire, going to the medicine cabinet, pulling out the iodine, chug the iodine and sniff rubbing alcohol at the same time. Laphroaig, and Islay's in general, are not drinkable to me in any way. Young or old. Have unfortunately wasted a fair few dollars to figure that out.
Sweaty shoes, burned rubber, acetone. 4 out of 5 stars.
The first time I had Laphoaig it was drinking a fireplace. I was overwhelmed. But wait for it and the leather and salt and caramel comes through. It’s a fabulous whiskey.
This let's get smashed live episode is really tasty, almost as tasty as those highballs I guess ;)
Great one sir!
I really appreciated the deep dive into a simple drink. This is a lot more approachable and something more realistic in ordering at a bar or making at home. Thank you!
Great work buddy. Love the tasting notes on this one. Great descriptions mixed with historical anecdotes. Can't go wrong. Never above never below always beside you dear sir.
I feel like a longer colab with the Whisk(e)y Tribe guys would make for a great video. I'm not sure how feasible it would be for either side, but the pure whiskey knowledge with your cocktail making chops could be interesting.

Love how you get increasingly "fun" after every drink. Great videos Greg!!!
Bloody OUTSTANDING episode chap... keep these rollin with scotch and Irish, SLAMDUNK hits.
This was awesome! You should do a similar video, but with gin and tonics. They're simple 2 part "cocktails" just like the scotch highball, gins are diverse enough you could try with multiple kinds just like scotch, AND I know you love gin lol.
You're absolutely right!

Not to be pedantic, but theoretically, gin and tonic has line, so 3. But, it'd still be an awesome episode, if longer, because I know that How to Drink got me on to tonic syrups, and then moving and matching THOSE to the different gins could be a whole thing.
Always happy to see a new episode out. Keep em commin
Dude I'm binging your content and your whole channel is amazing, watching every ad all the way though just for you
I loved the length of this video! This was the first video I watched from your channel, and it made me a fan immediately. All your videos are fantastic, and I would love to see longer videos like this. Cheers!
Loving the new intro style with the theme of the drink playing in the background!
Different episode - like it!
Did some fiddling around today and came up with something I’m not too ashamed of - 6 cL sherry, 2-3 cl rye, barspoon maraschino luxardo, barspoon of the juice from maraschino cherries (I use amarena fabri) and maaaybe a dash orange bitters. Not sure it needs the bitters. Thinking of calling it a “Sherrye”.
Give it a try if you like sherry.
I enjoy how deep you went into the tastes on this episode. Makes it much easier to imagine each drink.
Once again... tears are falling from my face from laughter!!🤙 keep it up
More content like this please! As an at home bartender, I would love to see your process of experimentation.
I'm confident you had as much or more fun making this video as we did watching it! And that's pretty awesome! Maybe do a part two of 'the highball' with bourbon and also different waters, like tonic and sparkling mineral??
Best drinking channel ever, love it🥃🍸🍹

Been anticipating this one since you mentioned it on the live stream. Great work as always!
That's true, I did!
This was a great episode, I was really interested in seeing how the twist of lemon changed the drink. If you do more episodes like this (which I hope you do), including your opinion on a common modifier would be really interesting!
Totally agree with Sam.
I think this is awesome! I would love to see drinks related to historical figures, Hemingway comes to mind, for example. Love your show, and love the decor! Cheers!

I thought the last few episode were a bit stale or rushed. This reminds me a lot more of the roots of the channel back when you only had 16k subs. Great job! So happy to see this again!!

this is the first youtber ive ever seen with a decent palate and ability to describe. thumbs up and subbed.
This was hands down my favorite if your videos. I'd love to see more!
When you first talked about Laphroig, I though you said La Croix and was very confused...
I think this is the first time I've watched the show, but I liked this episode. I like the idea of making the same drink with different types of the same liquor to see how the drink evolves. Your tasting notes really give a good idea of how the drinks transform. Then adding the lemon later, which I almost always add lemon or lime to my cocktails too, made the experiment even more interesting because for some it seemed to change the drink a good deal.
Thank you sir for introducing me to the scotch and soda. Probably my new favorite go-to drink. The tart bitterness of carbonated water really lifts the best parts of the woody, smokey, sweetness of the scotch. Definitely an acquired taste I think but a surprisingly good classic for a reason
Churchill is one my favorite British people and Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour was perfect. Please do more videos like this. :)
I love this video, my default is scotch and soda, and I loved watching the different tasting notes as well as how the lemon twist changed things for each. Another factor I love is what happens as the ice melts, and I will change what kind of cubes I'll use based on if melting heightens the yumminess during the drinking (of the drink) 😂 I am in awe of these long slab ice cubes you employ here, and would very much like to know more about them. Johnnie Walker Red is definitely the scotch and soda I will seek next time I'm ordering at a bar because of this. I mostly drink Famous Grouse at home, although when I'm poor Trader Joe's blended scotch is okay too. Better with a dash of lavender bitters though.
I really like this approach: taking significant historical figures (politicians, authors, celebrities, etc.) and analyzing their favorite drinks!
Histories Great Drinkers doesn't sound bad!
This episode was outstanding! Well done! I watched this while drinking my version from Texas: Cutty Sark, Topo Chico, and the juice of one lime.
