In a way, he kind of is. Umbra is the only titan set Bionicle ever released to have no unique parts at the time of his release. Every single part of Umbra can be found on other sets and used to build him.
It's also worth noting that he has absolutely _no_ original parts; even his mask can be found on two other sets, one of which was on shelves along side him. And, considering he was released slightly _after_ Axonn and Brutaka, not even the leg 'hydraulics' are original to this set. he is, essentially, a parts pack. :-/
Welcome to the Bionicle Talk Show! Today, Why is umbra so... Umbra: I was cursed by the Mask of Life, so I have gaps, roller skates and, well, you get the picture
If they had implemented the ratcheted joint system that was used in Knights Kingdom (somehow), I think the problem with the rollerskates could have been solved, as it would allow the legs to be held in a fixed position while playing with it. I understand why some purists might despise this idea but ultimately lego is a toy company and this would have improved the toy far more for the desired audience.
***** Hello Jurmangander, please refrain from commenting if you are simply going to spit out combinations of words which either make no sense or are not at all relavent in the current conversation, thanks. -Chronix
Bricks Of Awesome Honestly, I can't stand those things. They're extremely difficult to move. The newer ball- and- socket joints, with the added friction, do this job much better.
Actualy, i find the bar conecting the 2 swords on the bottom a pro. Often when i try to remove the staff from a rachie, or any other bionicle with a staff, I have to remove it in 3 parts, and without the hands you can't rebuild it seperate from the set. With goodold Umbra her, you go through alll the hoopdyla to take it off, then you can at least reconect the swords :P How did you miss that!!!
Very good review, Eljay. I would like to say that, yes, out of the box, umbra can't hold his staff one handed...Uuunless you do your own modification. In which I decided to do, and it works great. Speaking of modifications, I decided to modify the legs with some tightened leg joints from the Hero factory line. Each one on a hinge, and with an added length to the axle piece in the piston, make it work fantastic as it rolls smoother, without having to worry about him sliding to one side.
I really liked this set because it taught me with its upper leg pieces how to make custom limbs and other Bionicle body parts!... they are not just a single made piece with just other pieces added to, now it was multiple pieces that “needed” to be a functional part even minus the add on parts,... so I learned I could build more uniquely with my old Bionicle parts!!! Compared to the hero factory sets, and then the new “next generation” bionicle sets, all they had was a skeleton like back structure I added pieces to like a play doll.... limiting my variety of building with the new sets to just armor changes. :( I think I got this set because I wanted more of the igniki swordsand, and liked the reuse of a old launcher!... and some old and new, even rare pieces being used!!! Maybe if LEGO Bionicle had been more inspired by a set like this one ( minus the cons by learning from them ) instead of hero factory’s limits, they would have hade better toy sales, because I think that’s why the next generation of LEGO bionicle was cancelled for poor sales, and the limits the toy offered in variety building for new and old fans alike!... ( They were better off with this watered down building during the six Bionicle Stars sets at its time, since it got you connected with the whole old series, even with minus some of the old “awesome” functions ) This is just one example of how what’s old is new again might have worked for the next bionicle line, maybe if it was taken... just maybe... What do you other guys think 🤔 ???
I got this set for the accessories. He's got light-up eyes, two Inika swords, and a rotuka spinner. Even when I got this as a kid, I knew that basically all of the pieces were recycled. I wished it at least came with an exclusive mask of some sort. My brother got Brutaka at the same time I got this.
Lol. Imagine if Umbra fighting with Matoro said "I'm the darkest part of a shadow". And then Matoro: Oh, well you have a bright color scheme of light. Umbra: O_O.
This set is more evidence to my theory that LEGO had a vendetta against the Toa Metru masks. The black mask does not suit the overall color scheme, as almost all of the other black parts are minor and part of the inner workings. The mask should've been recolored Metru Green or Keetorange...or silver even, I don't know...but I guess LEGO hates the idea of recoloring those specific masks in particular.
perhaps Walmart exclusive in the US, but down here in Australia he was available in a number of stores. We don't have Walmart, or didn't at the time of its release.
Of course, as usual this is a good review, Eljay, but: 8:10 This is no fault of the set. That is how physics work. You must place his legs properly, then roll him. If you can't do that yourself then then don't blame the set, so to speak.
No. The lack of stability is indeed a fault of the set. It is difficult to position the legs right so that the set doesn't fall over - a direct con of the set.
***** I'm not saying the roller skates are not a con. I'm saying that Eljay's con - very specifically that a con is the fact that his legs may splay further than desired during rolling - is not fault of the set.
EMMSixteenA4 Yes its a con concerning distribution of weight and the looseness of the joints - something lego should have tested when designing the set. It like saying that it is not a con of the set, if the glue the toy company used to attach the head doesn't work, so that the head easily falls of. Yes that is a problem of physics (the glue not being effective enough to hold the weight of the head) but albeit something that toy company should have fixed when making and testing the toy :-)
Umbra is one of the best characters, and masters the power of contradiction: his name means the DARKEST part of a SHADOW, and his powers include LIGHTSPEED, SOLID LIGHT RHOTUKA, LASER LANCE, and can turn into a BEAM OF PURE LIGHT. And his eyes GLOW and he wears a powerless Kanohi Ruru, which is NIGHT VISION.
Y'know what's funny? There's also a Warframe in the game "Warframe" (derp) called Excalibur Umbra, who's just called "Umbra" by everyone else. At first, I got the two confused. But, here's something else interesting about that Umbra: his sword, Skiajati, literally means "Of shade or darkness" in Greek. Just some little fun-facts.
I always thought this set was cool. I remember seeing it on the back of one of the comics but I didn't get it back in the day. I got really lucky in like 2012 and found it at a garage sale for like 10 bucks!
Never really held any desire for this set. He was kind of a blink and you miss him character in the comics, but now...I might add him to the list of things to seek out.
Umbra's legs probably would not splay like that if they had back support at the hips, kinda like Fire Lord and Rocka XL. However, that is entirely speculative, as I never owned this set.
Well, that was a nice video, as the others have been. And in response to this particular instance of the oddly colored pins, I'd say that here they're not that noticeable. When looking at him, you'd really have to scrutinize the toy to notice them. Really, only the blue ones would be seen at first glace, and that's a big maybe if you have him posed behind smaller sets. I haven't personally built the set, so I don't know for sure, but from what I've seen the oddly colored pins are few and all located either in places you'd have to squint to see or in the legs. Both places are out of the way, and I don't think that it'd detract too much from the set. I mean, I'm sure there are FAR worse cases of the odd pins.
Good review, Eljay. But, if I may, why haven't you reviewed Brutaka, Axxon, and Vezon/Fenrakk? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember them being released before Umbra.
Now I am legitimately confused as to what are really "hands" in Bionicle. I've seen them as the "hand pieces" on all of the Toa Nuva, which is the most common; the 2 fingered look on Mata Lewa, Tahu, and Pohatu, adopted by Bionicle: The Game; the Nuva hand pieces with FINGERS (Hydraxon); and just the bloody ball itself (Stuart Sayger 2006-07 comics). So, yeah. Take a look at the comics. Sayger basically drew Umbra in one scene when with him one-handing the Laser Lance (weapon name), and the other hand is just the empty ball. Eljay... Any explanations or was there already an official one from the Lego set designers?
***** That right there is completely opinion. Stuart Sayger's style in the '06-'07 comics is actually my favorite. While the previous ones are cool too, no one tops Sayger, and his contributions in "All Our Sins Remembered" (Bionicle comic, '09-'10) were amazing IMO.
You must be new here :D But, yes, Eljay has always, at least, finished the years he's started, so we'll at least see the other titans, such as Axxon/Brutaka. However, I do believe he will continue into the years of Bionicle after this, could be wrong.
i had (i still have him but i am missing a lot of pieces) and i though he was worth the money and can appreciate the little bit of lore breaking in that in the Bionicle world... there are seemingly no such thing a wheels
I hate this set. The return of the Rhotuka was unexpected and really cool, but the set is just ugly. The horrible color scheme, the fact that it looks like random parts thrown together, and the roller skates and sword prohibit posing.
umbra:I use heelys to escape my shadowy feelys
bionicle apple omfg 😂
This doooooooooooooood
Looks more like a canonized MOC.his sword thing reminds me of an e-staff
Damn right he does. He also looks almost like the Dragonzord from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Andrew Homer I just googled that and the similarity is quite disturbing.
He should have been made a combination model of maybe all 6 of the toa inika or something. I don’t think he is a very good standalone set.
In a way, he kind of is. Umbra is the only titan set Bionicle ever released to have no unique parts at the time of his release. Every single part of Umbra can be found on other sets and used to build him.
roller blade check, red and blue light check,
Umbra is a mall cop confirmed.
That makes him feel cooler actually
@@DanielAyy I agree!
I never got Umbra. I couldn't even find him :(
Daniel Leverett I only saw him once. Then by the time I had the money to buy him, he was gone. :-/
Cyros Ignika Crap man... Sorry
Daniel Leverett Ah, it's fine. Like I said, he's a parts pack; I have everything in this set in my bin.
Unless I'm forgetting a set, his yellow Pohatu Nuva claws were only seen elsewhere in a highly obscure non-canon European promotional set.
I couldn't help but chuckle when he said the blue and red pins were the eyesore of this set... The entire set's an eyesore IMO XD
Mmm… I don't personally think so though haha. The Metru Green and the uhhhh…. Yellow… and the black go well together :D
I really don't like him. I hate green and yellow, so Umbra is one of my least favorite Bionicle sets, ever!
@@neitherlink6612Minnesota Vikings fan detevted
I wish either he was mainly black, or had a dark green ruru.
I like how the darkest part of the shadows has a bunch of light-up pieces. It just makes sense.

That, and the fact that he can Transformers-style turn into a beam of light.

wait, Roller-skates, Black,Umbra (Latin for shadow): SHADOW THE BIONICLE CONFORMED
