Velika was pretty much my first bionicle. I was six years old, and it loved the crap out of him. I played with him until his neck broke, and I had to buy a new one, so when I came back to the bionicle fandom, i was SHOCKED when I heard he was a great being.
I sort of felt that way about Piruk, my first set of 2006. I always have a special attachment to my first of each year, since often you actually get them in the final days of the prior year. Yeah I was shocked to hear this "Velika Great Being" stuff, and I'm not even really sure where that came out. Farshtey's serials died off and so we don't really know anything about Great Beings, which 2009 especially seemed to be hyping us up for.
@@Awakeningspirit20 I remember my first Bionicle was Kopaka Nuva, I would always pretend he was a snowy ski survivalist, brought him to school one day as a kid and the neck broke on him, I was heartbroken and had to remake his neck in my own custom way, I loved his look so much that even to this day I still think that Ice themed Bionicles are the most coolest and diverse of them all.
I just realised the irony of how you described these matoran and their lack of eyes making them look "soulless", given that these are the only matoran on Voya Nui who haven't been turned into, err, soulless zombie slaves.
uh, Eljay wears a gold Miru, not the mask of alternate futures... but then again, maybe karzahni couldn't be bothered to fix the matoran, and dumped the work on eljay
A humanoid being with no head except a giant hand holding its brain and eyes and everything would actually make a pretty frightening Dark Souls monster.
I remember playing with them (I think we had most of em) and they were always so awkward and hard to pose but I still love them cuz they are so memorable. Like I think they use so many interesting techniques in such a small space
The thing with the eyes was that the shorter lightpiping piece was not created until 07. putting the metru lightìping piece would hinder the articulation and would make the matoran look weird
TTV Eljay When I was 6 (when this was released) I thought these were the best sets around. The eyelessness worked fine for me as these characters are basically 'apocalypse survivors'. They had little to no sense of fun in them, and were always serious - in contrast to the fun and sports loving Mata Nui matoran. And also have in mind that these are Karzahnii's *fixed* matoran. He took normal matoran, and messed em up!
the empty eyes is a bit ironic, if you ask me, because all the matoran on voya nui(except these guys) were taken over by the piraka, and all their eyes were described as "strange looking"
I know these little guys didn't come with any new molds, but I think there's more good than bad here. 1. pretty good articulation for small sets (except for Kazi not having knees). I believe these were the first matoran to have head joints. 2. There's some good MOCing potential with the parts you're given. I know there aren't any new molds but there are plenty of useful ones from the past, like the blades or metru masks. 3. The combo models are some of the best to come out of bionicle. Seriously, they're well-designed. 4. With the exception of Velika and Garan being pretty much the same build, they're all unique from each other and aren't just clones. They may be part packs, but in my opinion they're FUN part packs.
Actually, the trans-blue pieces on Kazi were a new blue, which I think are actually completely unique to him. Previous sets that had it, such as Kohrak, had a darker blue for their eyes. Also, it would've been really cool if the Voyatoran had unique masks. I can picture a Matatu-looking mask with holes and stuff throughout, spanned over with those piston looking things on some limb pieces.
One thing about Kazi, and this might be just me, is that he has an interesting use for the Hordika lower arm. Getting this set as a kid, I thought it was genius to turn an arm into a body.
I remember my mom would always buy me all the bionicles when i was a kid. She would buy me these guys at first and i would usually have to earn them by doing an extra chore around the house “maybe 45 min at the most”. Once i finished and she gave me a bionicle i was the happiest kid ever. I always wanted more and usually in a year i could get a whole line give or take a set or two “especially the bigger ones as those were an xmas/ birthday only thing”. One of the saddest things for me is that I wont be able to share this experience with my kid someday. It was always exciting to see new series come out and pick out which one was the coolest. I hope that i can have an experience like what my mom had with me with my kid someday.
Honestly even for "parts packs" I'd take these guys for what they're worth. They have a disproportionate amount of hordika necks on them. And I *never* have enough hordika necks.
Its kind of sad as the best part of them is their combinations into the Lava Hawk and Dagger Spider. However these two things weren't reviewed, leaving out their greatest strength
Eljay love the reviews!!!! I remember getting the piraka for Christmas in 05 then getting these for my birthday in 06!!! 2006 is my favorite year and I'm so glad that u finally started reviewing it!!
I personally believe that these are the best Matoran. Up to this point, all Matoran sets have been just clone sets, while these guys are really unique in each of their builds. They do look ugly, but I really care less. Beauty is always and opinion, and I'm not gonna count looks as a praise. The are also cheap, so you can buy a bunch. Great review, Eljay.
@@makutamiserix5612 Grouping the reviews together has little to no bearing on whether or not the builds are unique. Eljay has spaced out clone sets for separate videos before, and the review itself acknowledges the builds of the matoran as unique aside from Velika and Garan sharing a body design.
These part-bin-sets would've been all worth it if their masks were recolored. But no, LEGO couldn't even handle that. Considering that the Toa Metru masks have only been recolored once (the Great Ruru was blue in the Karzahni set), it would've been awesome if they were at least recolored in these sets. In fact, the rarity of recolored Toa Metru masks would've made these prized possessions. Instead, all we get are previously silver pieces recolored into...lighter silver pieces. Oh, and a lighter Great Rau. And maybe Kazi's light blue eye pieces may have been a new exclusive tint, but it's difficult to tell.
Yeah Karzahni fucked up gave up these weapons as compansation and sent them to voya nui. Probably so the other Matoran don't make fun of them for being so poorly repaired.

I loved the Voyatorans for many reasons like how they have a high piece count for the price you paid(I can see the Moc bois going: "It free real state") also for the fact that they break the classic "Red one must always be leader of the team" by having Garan but those are just 2 of many other reasons
The Voyatoran and the Mahritoran are the only ones that make sense to not have any eyepieces. Since they just came from Karzhanni, it adds to their 'weary' look.
Eljay, as far as I've seen on ebay, the 06 sets seem to be the most expensive of all Bionicle sets currently (especially the titans). So I ask how much did you spend on the 2006 sets. Forgive me if I'm being too invasive, you don't have to answer this question if you don't want to.

Did you actually grind matau?
Poor Voyatoran. I blame Karzahni
Yaay! Recaps are back! Funny story, I accidentally named my self-MOC Garan at first...embarrassing fluke!
When I first saw these, I honestly thought they were Matoran versions of the Metru.
I had almost all of them, they were my first Bionicle sets, I fell in love with Bionicle on that day.. Sadly.. I lost them..
I agree with meso, Garan is one of the best written characters in the entire universe
He's underrated
The Voyatoran and the Mahritoran are the only ones that make sense to not have any eyepieces. Since they just came from Karzhanni, it adds to their 'weary' look.
Oh my god, Recaps are back! Piruk is my favorite out of these guys, and i still have them all! Also, when was gold good guy canonized? TTV Eljay
Turaga lhikan or Gold Good Guy was a promotional set that came with a pack of batteries.
Yeah, but eljay sayed he was, "recently canonized"
Benjamin Lane He was canonized as a character in 2004. And a set in 2005. Not so recent though.
Chuk Porris Incorrect. Greg recently canonized Gold Good Guy as the canon set form of Turaga Lhikan,
***** is there any link to where he said this?
I do have all these matoran sets, but sadly, all in pieces, and I forever lost Piruk/Matau's Kanohi mask. D:
Coming into bionicle in 2006 was weird having these guys first and looking back to the toa metru
These guys are GREAT for mocists
is the green one good
All of them are good.
At least to everyone but the Piraka and Makuta.
i ment good green
Good Green Guy?
He's non-canon.
thats piruk
balthazar werner RIP me lol
These guys are ok all 7/10 sets
Agreed
0:00-0:45 🤣😂
Velikas mask comes from Onewa (not to be mistaken with Onua)
Did you really use a blender for your toa metru?
Best skit ever its gr8 m8 8/8
You guys aren't stupid, you're just... special
Remember kids! ALWAYS RECYCLE!
The chronicler's staff piece came packaged with Bionicle: the game.
They should have changed the mask colors around, like the Metrutoran. who had recolored noble masks.
I played with the green one for hours, he was my favorite bionicle
