HOW TO REMOVE A SPARK PLUG THAT HAS THE HEX ROUNDED OFF
Вставка

- In this video, I discover a tool that makes removing a rounded-off spark plug easy! Sometimes the flat sides on the hex of a spark plug get rounded off making it impossible to unscrew with a conventional socket. For spark plugs that are installed at the bottom of a deep well in the cylinder head, especially, this clever socket design makes removal a cinch!

im off to the store! Thankyou! saved my day
I hope it works for you. Home Depot may have it, but I ordered this one from Amazon. Good luck!
@EverydayProjects just finished up. 1 stripped plug out and 6 new plugs in and shes running again! Thanks for the great video. That socket worked fantastic!
@@FortisNome You're welcome!
Pretty nice tool Thank you for sharing
This thing saved the day! Thanks for watching!
How's she goin'? Well now this is a good save eh!!! That socket set paid for itself pretty quick there!!! Thanks for sharing and take care!!!
Yes, indeed! I was about to remove the head but I thought to take a good look online first. This sells on Amazon for about $50 and while that is a lot for the one socket I could use, it saved me a lot more money in the long run. Thanks for taking time away from swatting at squirrels to check it out !!
Thanks for sharing !
2006 e250 cyl 6 with stuck SPlug.
I've tried my JEDI powers but it seems it does not work !
These tools are from a far away galaxy and are known to work. No Jedi powers needed!
Do you need to apply a lubricant to this prior to using this? I am picking this up tomorrow as my socket wrench can't seem to grab the spark plug in either direction! Thanks for the video.
No lubrication needed. I did, however, spray penetrating oil down around the spark plug to help loosen the threads. One of the best is PB Blaster or liquid wrench. Apply generously and let it sit for an hour before attempting to rermove the rounded plug. Good luck. Please like and subscribe to the channel--it is free!
Subscribed! One more question… I used a 5/8 socket wrench to try to remove the spark plug and both #1 and #2 would not grab properly after I torqued it loose. Is it possible the socket wrench I got is bad? I would think using this tool for all the spark plugs would not be ideal. It’s also possible the previous person to install the SP over torqued it!
You lucky because you still have the exagonal ,mine doesn't have ,I'm stuck any ideas how to get out ?
This tool will take out rounded bolts and spark plugs. If you cannot remove the plug with this tool, and you cannot reach the plug any other way, you'll have to remove the cylinder head. I big job, yes, but not impossible.
@EverydayProjects
Thabks for fast responding. That's gonna be the plan b!
That was too easy. Glad that it came out
No trick photography either...it just let go and came out. I don't know how often I'll have a use for that set but I have it now if I ever need it again.
Where can i buy ERWIN BOLT GRIP?
Just had this happen on my 5.4L F150. I've changed the plugs before and none broke like they are known to do, but two of the three I started with had the hex round, or break off! Never heard of this happening. The rear plugs are really close to the firewall so I'm concerned about the same thing happening there. I may have to try this if I can't find a shop that can deal with it. By the way, you're lucky that plug didn't fall out of the socket and into the open intake ports! Thanks for the video!
Some F-150 are known to have spark plug issues, like having a spark plug blow out and take the threads with it. They actually sell a re-thread kit now! Also, the rear plugs are almost imposstible to remove on some models because of the cab overhang. The dealers have special tools to get at them. If I were you, I'd put anti-seize on the spark plug threads and change the rear ones often (at least once a year) to keep them free. Good luck on getting those plugs out! Yes, the open intake ports should have been covered. Thanks for watching.
Pretty sure, I just had this happen today....5.4 Triton, plug 3...🤦
Can anyone tell me what the tool is called I saw it was made by Irwin but idk what it's called
BOLT GRIP (Its in the video)
Dude,thank you so much haha
This tool was very handy and it was worth the money to buy the kit. Nobody is paying me to say that--I just think this tool is amazing. I didn't have any other way to remove the rounded spark plug. Taking off the cylinder head was going to be my next move if this didn't work.
My problem is a little worse. With mine it appears that when someone installed the plug they twisted off the entire hex part of the plug. It must have been stuck in their socket because it's not down in the hole.
So I'm my case the 5/8 size would be to big. Was there a smaller size extractor socket in the kit.
What I have left is perfectly round. Thanks
I'm looking at the set right in front of me. 5/8" was the largest extractor. The other sizes in the kit are 9/16", 1/2", 7/16", and 3/8". The kit is IRWIN BOLT GRIP number is 3094001 . Please keep me posted on how you make out. Also, I had good results after soaking the stripped spark plug with penetrating fluid for a few days before trying to get it out. Best wishes my friend!
@@EverydayProjects I bought a set and the 5/8 is to big and the 9/16 is too small. I thought that would happen.
The plug is still in the car and the car is still running good. All I can do is run it until I can figure out something.
I don't want to pull the head just to change a plug.
I tried to get one of the other three plugs I changed to come apart like that and it wouldn't. I'm going to cut some open later and see how this is possible.
I tapped a 15mm down onto it but it wouldn't get a bite when I tried to back it out
@@LH-kz2nf I saw a guy on UA-cam heat a 9/16 socket orange hot and then tap It down over the spark plug with a hammer and extension. When it cooled he was able to back the plug out.
Did you ever get it out? I just tried to remove a Motorcraft plug that is too tight, and the hex part turned off, so I'm in the same boat, a round spark plug still in there. I have the hex part, but it's not like I can get it back down in there to weld it or anything, it's really deep in there.
@@mystupidvideos4347 no it's still in there but the car is running.
I did see a tool on the internet somewhere that actually pushes the insulator down through the metal part and into the engine and then the tool goes into the hollow meatal ring that's left in the head. Then you just unscrew it from there The guy had mad an adapter for his shop vac that fit tightly into the plug hole and it would vacuum the pieces of the insulator out of the engine.
I would only do that if you have that cylinders piston at TDC on the compression stroke. Doing it that way the piston would be all the way up and ithe intake and exhaust valves both would be closed.
maaan that spark plug doesn’t look very stripped mine is completely circled off and i don’t know what to do really stressed this is on a audi s3
This kit will get it out. I was very surprised how well it worked. I was unable to get a 5/8" socket to grab at all but this took it right out. This was $50 on Amazon but you may find it elsewhere. It is by far the easiest and quickest option. Good luck!!
i actually have that i just found out the problem is there is some gunk that doesn’t allow the socket to reach down to the hex
@@vlone42k42 AAAhha That's lucky!
Llol vlone same happen to my brother lol round like a dime lol
Even pulling the head off... I don't know Man. Without that tool you might have been heading to the machine shop. That tool saved you about 10 more hours.
You're right. I would have had to spend considerable time and $$$ if I was forced to remove the head. Even then, the spark plugs on this engine are at the bottom of a deep well about 1 1/4" in diameter and 6 inches deep. There would still be little way to get ahold of the plug. Drilling it out on the bench may have been one of a few possibilities. This set saved the day and may come in handy again.
That tool sometimes doesn't fit inside the whole
If it doesn’t fit in the hole, what do you use?
This shit happened in my subaru
This is the tool that will get the plugs out. I was really worried that I wouldn't get that plug out but this thing worked first time. I'm sorry to hear that you had a similar experience. The spark plug manufacturers should have to pay up for removing these cheap plugs!
Easy fix JB weld the socket to plug or hex will work now a 5.4 lol vaule broke off even pure hell get out
