    Some beautiful images! Trick of the trade when using a tripod in windy conditions: hanging a camera bag on the tripod hook helps, but when the wind blows the bag around vibration is induced. My way around this is to tie a length of shock cord between the bag and the tripod hook. This stabilizes the tripod but as the bag remains on the ground vibration from the swinging bag is eliminated.

    • @NigelDanson
      @NigelDanson  5 років тому

      Thanks! Good tip. I actually put the bag there to stop it falling over and didn’t use it when shooting. Also - I usually take a screw in peg for the ground and secure to that 👍👍👍

    Great content as always Nigel. It's nice to see compositions of Kirjufell without the falls. By the way, Kirkjufell is pronounced more like "Kirk-u-feck-t". The "LL" at the end of a word in Icelandic has a sound that comes from snapping your tongue off the back of your top teeth. Unless you grow up immersed in the language, you pretty much can't get it right. But you can get it closer with a "ck" sound like the end of the word "check". I spent some time with Icelanders trying to learn pronunciation, and it is hard if you did not grow up learning the language.

    Nice introspective into your process. I was there 12 days ago and ended up with 2 shots I liked, including a panorama with the main waterfall which is completely frozen. The other photo was shot as a long exposure very close to the second waterfall which is a few meters below and still has a bit of visible running water. I did not have time to go on the other side of the road which is a shame. I like the way you take your time to scout the location.

    Seeing as you go to some pretty chilly places, maybe you should do a 'kit review' on decent outdoor gear to keep you warm. Could be a disaster if you have all the right camera gear but your outdoor gear isn't up to the job of keeping you warm while you sit around waiting for the sun to come out.

    Nigel, you list your favorite filters as the Formatt-Hitech over the Lee filters. Are you using their resin line of filters or are you using the glass Firecrest line of filters? I know that some have complained that the Lee filters as not being truly ND, that they were getting a blue cast to their images. I see that Lee recently released their Proglass line of IRND to replace the Little Stopper, Big Stopper and Super Stopper, but continue to have their resin line of variable ND filters without a glass option. F-H meanwhile offer a resin line and the Firecrest and Firecrest Ultra lines of filters. I didn't know what your experience was with the F-H resin filters vs the Lee resin filters, if you felt there was any difference or if you were using the Firecrest line.

    • @NigelDanson
      @NigelDanson  5 років тому +1

      Hi there - I do like lee as well but have had colour cast issues. I only use the firecrest - mainly due to the absorption of resin filters.

Cheers!

    Thanks for the awesome images, Nigel. It’s always great to see your images and get to know a little about your process of shooting. But speaking of the process: could you please make sure to choose titles that are fitting the topics of your videos? I do not mean to disrespect what you are doing. Your work is great and I have already taken a few things from your videos. But lately I have noticed your videos are more about something else than what the title suggested. As with this video. I did not learn how to shoot unique photos at iconic locations. You did shoot them, neverthess. But your process behind them, all your premeditation, that would have been great to know about ... as the title suggested. Anyway, again: love your work. Please keep doing it and maybe consider giving us more advice on how to tackle these challenges beforehand. Thanks! :)

    Hello Nigel, what can I say? Your vlogs are getting and better and better. So entertaining. Your own images were 'First Class' and as I watched the vlog I had a great desire to be there also with you. Question: Regarding taking snow scenes. I know if we shoot in manual and ETTR we shall get more detail in the highlights. But we do this anyway, all the time, mostly, to get a full range of tones, so really, we are are not really overexposing for the snow. I wonder and I ask you? Is not better in this situation to shoot in aperture priority and then overexpose by say, one and a half stops? So I wonder what is your opinion Best regards, Allan Davies.

    • @NigelDanson
      @NigelDanson  5 років тому +1

      Hi Allan - you do need to be careful with the blues in the image as they can still blow out even though the histogram doesn't show.

    • @davemackenzie9900
      @davemackenzie9900 5 років тому

      Camera meters are set to correctly render middle grey (50%...the color of a grey card). The standard adjustment for snow is to over expose by 2 stops, but as Nigel said you still need to watch the highlights.

      Yeah - I know what you mean... in summer you could easily hike and get away from this though

    At the risk of sounding like a wimp and/or mothering you, I become more and more concerned about your safety when making videos. I was at the very same beach in Iceland three weeks ago, and we were clearly warned about rogue and highly dangerous waves - and there you are at 7:40 standing feet away from the water. And in last week’s Kirkjufell video, at 4:35 you are perched on the top of the cliff, standing on what could have been nothing more than overhanging snow - with a safety line down and disappearing into the snow just behind you! There have been many other instances when you have looked less than safe up hills and mountains. Please take care!! No photo or video is worth risking life and limb.

      Thanks for concern Roger... safety always first concern and never put myself in any danger. 👍
