  • Is Fuji's one-time flagship camera still practical today? It certainly is. In fact, it's the perfect tool for professionals and hobbyists alike. And if that wasn't good enough... it may be best value in digital photography today.

    Thanks John. You saved me a boat load of money. I bought a "like new" X-Pro1 today for $450. I have been looking for a camera for at least 3 months now. I got so messed up with all the technology and, this one does that and that one does this, that I found myself wanting to just find a good, basic camera that takes great stills. I guess my old film days were sublimilaly nudging me or something. Then boom! - up popped your video and my fretting over what to buy was resolved. I am looking forward to learning how to use the new Fuji. Thanks again.....Dave

    Hi john I use the xpro1 with the 27mm 2.8 because it can focus close and sharp and it makes for a nice lightweight combination excellent for doing street photography because people don’t take any notice of you because the 27mm is such a nice tiny pancake lens it’s great for taking photos of people in everyday life with confidence as they don’t notice you and the camera it just looks like an old film camera it’s fantastic.

    I picked up an X-E1 for around $160USD a few months ago as a secondary camera for running around, and I've been loving it ever since.
    I'm still a sucker for a chunky full frame dslr for sure, but the Fuji comes with me whenever a dslr would be too bulky.

    The magic in this camera comes from the enjoyment, the feeling you are in control and the direct accessibility of the dials. The image quality surprises me over and over again and not only me also collegues and members of the photography club i am in all of them with much heavier and more expensive gear and more pixels but with much flatter images, the x pro 1 delivers lively colors in all circumstances especially also in low light even with higher iso. Sports and fast moving objects...you are right...forget it, get an xpro 2 for all the rest its a keeper and a must have for every photo enthousiast that has this love for oldschool quality and the skills for the manuel manipulation that can make the difference. You put it in the xpro1 and it will give you a jpeg and raw file both top quality. Get one , the sooner the better and enjoy.

    • @adelaide7822
      @adelaide7822 4 роки тому

      @@michel559 Hi, funnily enough my X-Pro1 is also from Switzerland (wouldn't recommend importing one to the Netherlands, import costs are really high) but other then that I realy enjoy using it. The 40mm you mentioned is my favourite out of the two lenses, it is the one which is usually on my camera when it's on the shelf, my daily I guess. I like it for daily use because it has a nice bokeh and sharp enough image quality for stills if you go for a higher aperture and the fact that it goes till f1.8 means it's not completely useless at night or other low light conditions. It's also very light and flat which means it is nice for carrying around in your trips. There are a few problems though, which is that it's not very sharp at the low apertures and there can be some chromatic aberration. It's also not a native lens which means you need an adaptor and it won't have autofocus, and autoaperture won't work, so no Auto or Shutter Priority mode. Besides that what I find more annoying is that the OVF is useless with it, and the EVF isn't that great to use. Manual focus can also be abit of a pain sometimes and it's hard to get a quick picture or take a video. I would recommend the lens besides these shortcomings though, especially if you can get it for under 30€ like I did. Keep in mind you need to add an extra 10€ at least for an adaptor. Good luck with taking beautiful images and enjoy!

      @@adelaide7822 wow Adelaide, very nice of you to come back with this detailed answer. Don‘t tell me about import, we are non EU and everything has import tax on it. Pain. I actually bought a Guitar from the Netherlands :-)
      Yes I know about adapters, manual mode etc. I know it can be hard. It is a pitty it doesn‘ work with the OVF, like say a film camera. I hope I get the hang of it. People seem to love their Xpro1 with all its quirks, so I hope I get on with it too. I was considering a XT1 as well, only because it has a big and way better evf, focus peakibg is better too. But ultimately went for the Xpro1 cause I love the design and feel of it. I already have a x100t with ovf/evf but fixed lens.
      Yeah I looked indeed at compact vintage lenses cause ai don‘t want a bulky package (incl adapter) on the xpro. The OM zuikos are nice and compact too. I have a Nikon FE film camera and a Nikkor 50mm/1.4, bit it is quite heavy and big. Maybe I just get an adapter for NIK-FX and see how I get on with MF snd the evf before buying other vintage lenses.
      Thanks again fir your help, very much sppreciated indeed!

I also own the X-T1 but prefer the x-pro1, Ive seen the pro for sale as little as £250 which is a great price , upgrade the firmware and your away. Still has a place in 2017 imho.

    So so so so so right!!! I've been saying this for quite some time now. I've had my X-Pro1 since the first day they came out, it's the only camera that I have never sold and will never sell - I've been through a lot, had all the X-Series cameras, Sony, Panasonic, Nikon and never found anything close to the original X-Pro1. Technically there are far superior cameras out there, but there really is something about the original X-Trans sensor that was lost in the later generations (sadly). It is now my only camera! I have the original 35mm f/1.4 that I bought with it and the 23mm f/1.4. If you put the newer 35 and 24mm f/2 lenses on the X-Pro1 it is surprisingly quick to focus (a lot quicker than with the f/1.4 lenses).

    I think it’s interesting how in digital photography some of us are starting to talk about sensors the way people talk about film stocks. People don’t love Portra 400 for the sharpness, but for the *look* it brings. I’ve seen people wax lyrically ablut the Leica M9 and the original Fujifilm X100 for the colours of their CCD sensor. And I also see many talk about the magical qualities of the original X-Pro1 sensor.
    Personally I really love the colours of my X-Pro2 (esp. in the blue hour on higher ISO settings, it’s just magical to me), but sometimes I consider going back to my X-M1 (my original fuji, all I could afford when I was a student), it certainly had a unique look.
    Thanks for all the videos! I like it when people actually dare to talk about subjective experience of stuff instead of hiding behind techicalities.

I have been thinking the same thing that you just explained in the video about why the X-Pro1 is such a great camera. My favorite go-to lens is the 18mm F2, mainly for size, cost and just love how wide it is. I agree, it is such a great deal for the X-Pro1 right now. Thanks for this video John. I've actually recently moved to Fuji and have had an interesting journey to the X-Pro1 myself.
    I started out buying the X-T2, and wasn't happy with the single point autofocus speed for the price. (I shot a Panasonic micro four thirds for about the past year before, and that probably spoiled me.)
    Truthfully, I was stretching my budget at the time to even buy the X-T2, but I told myself I was going to go all out because I really do enjoy photography, and I thought it'd be worth the price. I ended up returning it even though I really loved the image/video quality. After watching a few UA-cam reviews, the next camera I bought was the X-Pro1, and I loved the images for the price and even the feel of the camera. I figured since I loved it so much, I'd probably love the X-Pro2 even more, so I quickly (too quickly) returned it and got an X-Pro2. Turns out I didn't like it as much. The weight, the button feel, the ISO dial, and again the price just didn't work for me. I actually liked it least of any Fuji I bought, and I returned it too.
    The holidays were coming and I couldn't find a good deal on another X-Pro1, but I found a great deal on an X-M1, which I read had the same sensor. It was nice, had image quality of the X-Pro1, and I loved the flip screen, but it lacked the build quality, aesthetic appeal, and responsiveness of the X-Pro1, so I returned that too. It's a lot of hopping around I know, but when you have your own money to spend on things, you want to get what you really like.
    After reviewing a lot of my Fuji pics from the past few months and thinking over my experiences with the various cameras, the one that I missed most was the X-Pro1. So for a few weeks, I've been without any camera at all, which is just a really crummy (in a first world sense) place for me to be in life. Just the other day though, I found a deal on a used X-Pro1, so I pulled the trigger. It will be in soon, so I hope to keep learning with it and hearing from more seasoned photographers like yourself.
    I also have a X-T20 on preorder because I'll be doing some video stuff soon, but for my personal/family photography, I'll be using the X-Pro1 quite a bit. The image quality and relatively small file sizes are great for the number of pictures I'll likely end up taking. Now that I've owned it once and know what it can do, I honestly (fingers crossed) plan on keeping this next one for a long time.

      aaronscribbles thank you for the comment and watching the video. I agree, I have had many many cameras, but there is just something magical about the x-pro 1 and the images it produces. Hey guys, just want to put in a plug... if you are considering getting an Xpro1 plus an 18mm lens, you could also get (a) a used Fuji X100S off amazon, etc, for the same price (he quoted ~$700-800 I think), OR (b) take a look at the Fuji X30- its ~$400. Yes, It has a much smaller sensor, but it has a 28-100mm equivalent zoom, an EVF built in, and is roughly the size of the X100. If you know how to keep your ISO down, the X30 is a joy to use, and also gives you access to the latest fuji operating system (and hey, it has classic chrome too). Just a thought!

My suggestion to you as a professional photographer is produce future UA-cam videos on how you would FULLY exploit the power of this camera & lens(18mm and other lenses) combo. If you do this I am sure you will have many followers counted me in as well because I just subscribed.

    2020 and still a great camera. A real love/hate relationship. The menus I simply hate. I first got my hands on one in 2012 when Fujifilm sent it to me with the lenses they had at that time. Bought one used in 2017 and have taken it from mint to brass. My "Poor Man's Leica".

    Aloha John! I was delighted to see this video, but was hoping you would get more into why you (and others) like the sensor in this camera more than the other Fuji cameras. I have used a few Fuji X cameras (X-E1, X-E2, X100s) and at the moment went back to the original X100 as I find the jpgs from the X-Trans to be too "hazy" for lack of better word. Would be great for you to mention your settings for jpgs and to elaborate on how the X-Pro 1 jpgs differ. Thanks again for uploading content and I of course subscribed and look forward to your future videos. Mahalo, Thomas

    I currently have an X-T20 but I'm thinking about getting another Fuji X-series to use with vintage lenses. I'm looking at the X-Pro1 but also at the X-T1 which is virtually the same price, but a little more modern. For the same price, would you still pick the X-Pro1 over the X-T1 and if so, why?

    @THUKR 8 років тому

    Hello John, Thanks for your thoughts. It's helpful to make my decision. However, just to reconfirm I'd like your opinion, as i have never used a X-Pro 1.
    I'm currently using X-T1 with 14mm prime. I plan to start a documentary/street project (self-learning). I have been thinking to sell my X-T1 body and get X-Pro2 + 23mm f/2 lens by putting some additional money. The reasons are i really don't need two bodies and i like to have simple setup (max 2 prime lenses one for land/city scapes and for street/documentary).
    Second option i have been thinking is, while keeping X-T1 to get a X-Pro 1 + 23mm f/2. Probably I can save some money (I'm a gradstudent-money is important). However, i love X-T1 in my hands very much and i'm afraid to sell X-T1 for X-Pro1. Would you really recommend the X-Pro1 over X-pro2 here? I don't need the super fast frame rates, but my worry was about slow/laggy focus in X-pro 1. The second point is I like and prefer the higher ISO performance in X-pro2, and ability to pull off lots of details later (as my free time is mostly evenings/nights and rarely in day time for the project).
    Would love to hear your opinion/advise here. I probably can save about 300-400 euros by going into the second option (even if i bought a used X-pro2 and 23mm f/2)

    • @wondersandwilderness
      @wondersandwilderness  8 років тому

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. This is a tough one, for sure. For documentary style stuff you're going to be hard-pressed to beat the rangefinder-style X-Pro body. I suppose if it were me, I'd ask myself what lighting condition I plan to shoot more in. If it's lowere light stuff, then the X-pro2 and the new 23 f/2 is an amazing combo. If it's in broad daylight, then I really belive the X-pro1 can do the job. With the firmware updates and the use of the newer lenses (i.e. f/2 line 35 and 23 are an awesome street focal length) You could get both and an X-pro1 body (used) and still come in less than a new X-pro 2 body.
      That said, there are advantages to the X-Pro2 (weather sealing, etc) that you're not going to find on the X-Pro1. If money isn't a huge factor - go with the first option. If it us, then the second option is awesome. In fact I have both an X-t1 and X-pro 1 and I don't feel like I miss anything. I also have the 18 f2, 35 f/2 WR & 50 f/2WR. In this case I think you're making a good decision either way.
      Let me know what you decide.
      Thanks,
      John

      Thank you very much for spending your valuable time to give your thoughts on this.
      Exactly, I was thinking of X-pro 2 because of the low light capabilities and i heard it helps to pull off so much shadow details. Besides, i really want to use the joystick.
      However, i have one last question, since you do have both X-T1 and X-pro 1(with the new firmware upgrades), how much do you feel the difference in two, specially in: focus(in low light, let's say blue hour for rough comparison) and general responsiveness ?
      Because, i don't think if they are similar in performance, i don't want to have two bodies, i'd rather sell XT1 and buy X-pro 1. I'm not a pro photographer, I'm a grad student so not so much time :) besides, I like to focus on improving my photography technique. (I will be buying used body xpro1 or xpro2 and only a single lens either 23mm or 27 or 18mm as i have 14mm)

    Hey John, very cool videos here and helpful for me (considering getting an X Pro 1). I've been shooting film on an old Nikon for a few years, and looking for something digital for shooting more casually instead of burning rolls on my 1 year-old. My only concern is the manual focusing. It seems a bit onerous, especially if I'm using manual lenses as my primes (planning to just adapt my old Nikon lenses). I've heard that Fuji released an update for the X Pro 1 that lets you manual focus easily in OVF-can you confirm that? Basically I want to be able to look through the viewfinder, turn my focus ring, and click, without having to use the EVF. Is that the way it still works, or is my information incorrect? Thanks, and cheers.

    I have the the X-100S with the 50mm Teleconverter lens. How would you compare, is it worth getting the X-Pro 1 with some nice lenses or wait for the X-pro2 to come down in price and trade up my X-100S to fund it?

    I have an X100S and love it but want to try different focal lengths, so I am interested in the xpro1. One question - how do people with glasses find the viewfinder? I had to change the diopter wheel on my X100s before it looked sharp, so I am concerned I might not be able to see properly through the default Xpro 1 viewfinder. I am nearsighted with pretty atrocious vision. Thanks for any help!

    I just got one for $300 and and 35mm lens for $250. I'm interested in experimenting with shots that are not hyper sharp like current offerings. I had a fuji camera a few years back and since I sold my Leica wanted to get something not so sophisticated. I'm looking forward to shooting with it very much. Like you I have spent way too much money on the latest and tried every major brand with varying degrees of success.

    Thanks for this - you've made think again a bit....I love what my xpro1 produces but I'm starting to lose my central vision and the lack of an autofocus I can totally rely on (like my D3 when I was still well enough to work) drives me mad. The lack of a real manual focus is a huge oversight as I can't even set it by aperture and subject without it flipping off when the shutter is pushed. It makes it virtually unusable for me now.
    I love candid shooting (candid weddings and stage show work were my no1 jobs) and am not keen on or used to checking images after every shot as I would just miss the next one. The D3 just got out of the way and let me work.
    I can't physically or financially deal with anything like a D3 now; I love the form factor of the Xpro1 and I have all the X lenses I want so how close to the D3 would an XT1 be for reliable AF? Obviously I'm not expecting to shoot hillclimbing and circuit racing like I used but is it totally reliable for people and everyday shooting?
    Thanks!

    Intriguing.
    I wish you'd have explained the viewfinder. It seems to be a combo of a Leica style VF and an EVF. Or, is it solely a straight rangefinder?
    If I don't love the Panasonic GX85 I just bought on eBay, this would be my 2nd choice... or maybe a Canon SL2. I want something lightweight... like the old Pentax Spotmatic was! If only THEY made a digital version of that!
