CITIZEN DIGITAL WATCHES: 70s- 2000 History of Ana-digi temp, Calculators, Promaster , Independent

- Citizen watches have an excellent history , but I would bet that you probably haven't looked into its digital watch catalog too much beyond perhaps the ana-digi temp.. This video provides an overview of the origins of Citizen Watch Co , its first forays into electronic watches and quartz, with the primary focus being on its digital watch offerings.
This overview moves through from the original crystron LC , to their first alarm and multi alarm models , the amazing Citizen crystron calcaultor watches, as well as their 80s sports watch and multi function models. Of particular note is the P130 casio g-shock clone - very cool. Into the 90s we cover the Promaster range , with a favourite being the hyper aqualand and the super fun Citizen independent series which had a whole array of bonkers watches.

I did a broader video on Citizen watch history that you may enjoy here -> ua-cam.com/video/V0xI3XJQCfk/v-deo.html
Fascinating visual watch history lesson. I had assumed Casio was responsible for everything that Citizen had innovated!
Surprising right? They innovated the alarm , ana-digi, sensor watch - very cool
My favorite brand ever!!! Never knew they had such an extensive digital collection!
Neither did I till I started the research for this video!
Nice, Feels like Opened the Time Capsule, Thanks
Honestly mate with the time and effort you put into these video you deserve way more recognition. Didn't know all these Citizen existed and I'm glad I do now. Had no clue Citizen was so important in the digital watch space too. Well done mate.
Far too kind man. Much appreciated. I honestly enjoy it so it’s not a burden - it’s an outlet! Really appreciate the share too. Always enjoy your vids!
@@IlluminatingWatches anytime mate and appreciate that.
Well said bro! This guy is fast becoming legendary!
Great video. I'm here because I just got back from Japan where I bought a new old stock Crystron LCD from 1979.
Brilliant as always🤘 Remind me why you aren't you at 100k subs?
Ha ha thanks man. Only so big a market for a faceless guy doing 20 min videos on digital watch history. Do it for the love !
Great Video as always, love the fact that you have your sources on screen as it helps for additional reading, and really goes too show how much effort you put in your work. I would say you along with watchfinder and king of vintage are some of the very few watch channels that are better than a triple-a TV production! Cheers!
Very kind of you! Indeed, my hope is that my macro level map of citizen digitals is a nice starting point for folks, and the references can help people dig deeper . I love KoV - deserves to be up there with biggest channels! Those guys are rea experts - I’m simply an enthusiast!
Wow what a fantastic video! Some crazy watches
I know right? So much cool stuff. Really appreciated man.
Another fantastic journey down a horological rabbit hole! Awesome atuff 🙌 Reminds me I really do need to get a Citizen in the collection at some point.
Thanks for joining me! I’ve definitely picked out a few that are in my list too. Really appreciated as always!
A very well made video!! Amazing job, research and visuals👏
Thankyou so much! I’m so pleased that this one seems to have been going down so well.
Another great one. Thank you.
Thankyou Thankyou as always. Really enjoyed the process of making this one !
Yours are the only watch videos I watch (no pun intended) from start to finish! Fun, informative and straight to the point! Superb!
I’m glad you found it an illuminating watch ha . Really appreciated Ian as I know they are quite dense and long! I’ve been trying to cut out as much waffle as possible whilst still throwing in a few asides - it’s a balance!
@@IlluminatingWatches Seriously, you should be very proud of your productions! What I love about your videos is that they're so easy to watch and informative. As a viewer, you learn so much in such a short period of time! You have zero waffle! 10/10
@@iandavidson99 Thankyou! Made my morning :)
Great work with this one. So many fun watches. Thanks!
Thankyou Thankyou!
These videos are awesome!
Great video. Thanks mate.
Much appreciated! Been enjoying watching your videos too!
Loved it, suscribed!
Another top quality video , you deserve far more views , I hope you keep making great content
Thanks so much. I’m just pleased anyone is watching as appreciate that it’s very niche!!
Great history. Just outside of your time frame, I had a Citizen Skyhawk A-T in 2002. It was a fantastic watch when I worked on a cruise ship. It made it easy to change time zones which was a feature I used a lot. Even the slide rule bezel was handy for unit conversion. It lasted about 10 years before the yellow second hand stopped for good. Nowadays, I have a promaster Titanium Skyhawk in my collection along with a F150 Sattelite wave.
Very nice! Yes I do tend to have a bias for vintage side of things. Overwhelming selection in the modern catalog!
Really enjoyed this video especially as I had no idea that Citizen produced so any digital watches during that period of time. Some great designs. I have only ever purchased the Citizen Eco Drive watches over the last few years and I have about 12 in my collection atm including an AT one.
Thanks again for all the research you put into your videos they really are awesome.
Thanks so much- really appreciated and new video in final stages now!
Another excellent video, love your work!
Btw, I happen to have one of those Ana-digi voice recording models
Thanks so much. Oh excellent! That’s a great watch to have
Love the memo calendar! Brilliant video as usual, man!
Thanks Norman! Super appreciated!!
Such a good video, full of cool watches.
waiting for the next one
So glad you enjoyed. I learned so much about citizen. I knew very little going into the making of this video.
@@IlluminatingWatches but now we all are curious to see something from your collection 😜😜😜
Wait till you see the one I’ve got on the way ! I’ll post it on here . Very excited !
Great video and professional looking too. Some over the top graphic displays in there, the 'Y front undies' watch stands out as eye catching👌
Ha ha god bless Canva. Underpants watch is a winner in my book :)
great infos/ sum up...
love citizen as a brand or their promasters..
but good to know about their digis..:)
I like seiko, but yes these citizens deserve more respect, i am looking at them now alot more
Me too! Since making the video my respect sent up a lot
Awesome work as always definitely need more citizen reviewed
Thanks so much man! Really appreciate you always stopping by. I owe you a visit again!
@@IlluminatingWatches don't worry about it mate your a busy guy always love watching your videos
Fantastic collection and great video, my friend! 🤙🏻
I can only wish I had all these in my collection! Definitely want a hyper aqualand. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking a look!
@@IlluminatingWatches I like all the Aqualand Promasters. Build quality, functions and accuracy are second to none. 😍
By the way, friend, that P130 watch at 8:17 is the one I traded with Mr Rangeman. He gave me a Casio DW-9900 Frogman for it.
@@Daud76 awesome!! Yes I remember he said in the video he’d done a trade for a frog. Pleasure to hear from you in the comments! Still very thankful to him for giving me some early promotion for the channel.
@@IlluminatingWatches Thank you! It gave me a smile to see Mr Rangeman in your video and more so my old Citizen. I am happy with the trade and I know he is too. 🤙🏻
Super. Thank you.
Thankyou :) my pleasure !
@13:13 "Here is a whole unicorn vomit range of colors..." 😂
Ha ha I say that in a loving way
Thats a very interesting 🤔 collection of ana-digi watches. Citizen is still a pretty 😍 decent watch ⌚️ today. Just subbed!! Your friend, Jeff.
This is an awesome video.
Thankyou! It seems to be going down well so far
Having watched this I gotta say that Citizens relative lack of attention is a design issue, compared to Casio and Sony the watches just aren't as attractive as the competition. Despite their technical firsts and innovation theres alot of spuds in this episode....very few models that excited me on an aesthetic level, great deal of respect especially for the early scuba models but boy are they messy to look at. Great overview thanks
Thankyou! I do think there are some diamonds in the rough though. Should have seen the number i had to cut out of my casio videos to arrive at the more interesting ones - it’s just a smaller sample size. Agree there are some cool technical firsts which makes me see the brand differently than before I went into researching it
Love the amount of work you put into such a concise video! Keep up the amazing work! P.S. Personally, pure digital watches feel a bit “sterile” to me and they lack the irreplaceable charm of analog (at least to me). The ana digi is the perfect fusion of both worlds, offering something quirky yet charming. Btw do you have any tips on finding vintage citizens online? The ones I found on eBay aren’t exactly in very good condition and I’m not sure if I should get it
Anyways, amazing vids and I rly appreciate your work!
Awesome comment - Thankyou so much! I can understand that perspective - but I’m a sucker for a pure digi. Citizen are the original king of ana-digi though! Best way is to get networked into other collectors through Instagram and Facebook and be known as a collector rather than a flipper. Hope you stick around the channel! Some analog content on the way too.
Great video!
Thankyou!
I was always only into Casio, but in Japan you can still find a lot of Citizen watches. Just saw a quirky Citizen Independent 5432 with 2 analogue watches next to each other on one strap. For a €100,- it could be mine...
I love citizen independent watches. They are so different!
@@IlluminatingWatches And compared to Casio they are soort cheap. For €70,- I can get a titanium Citizen Atessa with date. Mind blown...
Since first watching this video I've aquired a couple less popular vintage citizen digitals and one thing no one really mentions is how insanely bright the light feature was compared to the competition. U can ACTUALLY read the display.
Fantástico vídeo muito informativo sensacional 👏👏👏👏
Thankyou!!
My head would hurt just trying to use that calculator watch lol, great video again my man
Ha ha - I know right. Still fun though
Great video 🙂👍
Thankyou Thankyou! Saw your note on IG too. Really appreciated!
Brilliant! Got an ana digi and the underpants watch😂 but the strap is long broken. Hugely impressive trawl through a great brands madcap history
Thanks so much! Long live the underpants watch!! Appreciated 🙏
You can actually still get the classic ana-digi look quite cheaply from Casio. Someone in the marketing dept hasn't yet figured out how trendy they are, and in London you can get one for under £30. Bought mine a few years ago, and everyone compliments on it.
HELLO FRIEND ! ! : HOWEVER YOUR VIDEOS LET ME NO WORDS . CITIZEN , WHY NOT ? . MY FATHER HAS A CITIZEN ANA - DIGI . NO COMMENT , SHORE...! .
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CHANNEL , AND WELCOME AGAIN . TIME AGO THAT I NOT SEE YOU , BUT YOU HERE NOW . THANK YOU AGAIN .
GRETTINS FROM SPAIN , FRIEND ! ! . 👋☺⌚
Welcome back! Thanks for watching as always !
Great video I remember the hisonic watch from citizen its actually a bulova accutron 218 movement i definitely want the voice master i am also looking for the citizen 49-9714 calculator watch from 1979 and I want to collect the hyper aqualand love the citizen can't get enough of those
Thanks so much! I also love those three watches! The hyper aqualand is the one I think I’ll definitely get
@@IlluminatingWatches I also have a blue angels c 300 skyhawk and a blue angels navihawk i definitely want to collect more Eco-Drive citizens in the future
Love the navihawk- so ridiculously complicated! I know a lot of blue angels wear the omega x-33 from another video
So I am late to the channel but enjoy the content. Would just like the content split to the decades to flesh out the Flash Through Time.
So glad you enjoyed! Lots and lots more where this came from . Stick around! And regarding your point around the sections - fair point! I’ve tried a few different ways across videos - by theme and decade
Good video and good review of Citizen digital watches, but there was one I feel should have been included; the 1977 Citizen 59-1013 or 59-1033 (not entirely sure of the correct reference) Solar Digital watch.
Thanks so much! I’ll definitely see if I can scout that one out. Found it trickier for citizen as there were some years where the catalogs were available and not for other years. I managed to fill some gaps with the way back machine but have no doubt missed some!
The Citizen multi-alarm II has a cool quirky feature : if you press the black and yellow buttons at the same time, it tells you what time it is with three different sounds for hours, minutes and seconds. So at say 2:31 it would go "chirp chirp - pause - beebeep beebeep beebeep - pause - beep".
Oh nice! Like a minute repeater !
@@IlluminatingWatches yeah it's neat - the ad you showed emphasizes that feature heavily : "the only watch in the world which can be programmed to TELL the time" :)
Nice ! I had presumed that just meant the alarm. Very cool indeed
Citizen owned brand Q&Q still makes decent digital watches .
I’ve checked Q&Q out a few times. I’ll have to try one at some point
@@IlluminatingWatches I am wearing Q&Q model: M113J312Y.
it's a good watch ,the strap was a no go for me .
@@TheStraightShooter92 just checked it out. That is a cool watch! Nice find!
perhaps the digi temp will be the first digital watch that i will add to my collection
It is a great little piece of history
@@IlluminatingWatches i settled on the CASIO SGW600H
Fun choice!
Do you know where I can find more info on the Pierre Cardin watch you showed?
I think this was from one of the citizen catalogs . I’ve got a few of them saved . Pieter Doensen has a Pierre Cardin collection too I think
@@IlluminatingWatches Thank you.
Do anyone have Citizen Independence watch?, Thank you so much for the video I was looking for this watch since a long time.
I don’t - but they are very cool! Seem to have been more available in Japan
@@IlluminatingWatches might have to travel.
Citizen
Seiko
Casio
Timex
Omega
Are good watch brands for Water Resistant for Swimming
Well... to see this... Casio puts a little bit more love to overall watch appearance.
Ha ha it’s always fun to explore other options though!!
@@IlluminatingWatches yes :)))
Best brand and continuing the ana-digi tradition, whereas Seiko seems to have given up.
The Independent c353 looks like a maxi pad. With wings.
I have an accurist world time watch from 2009! This looks almost the same as the citizen sky hawk watch! Same module! How is this possible?
If it’s a miyota module - citizen own them and sell to other watchmakers.
did u see the new retro release of the casio watch with digital and analog display?
Not sure which one you mean so perhaps not!
@@IlluminatingWatches Casio Men's Wrist Watch AQ-800E-7A
@@zillsburyy1 ah yes I saw that one. I like it!
7:42 did anyone make a digital regatta yacht timer?
Yes indeed the memosail LCD . I own one!
The name of the first music at the beginning please 🙏.
Ah yes - that is from Epidemic sound which provides music that doesn’t get copyright claimed. Lots of UA-cam folks use it so you’ve probably heard in other places

3:25 apple copy chek black watch in the right, is apple watch design!!!
Ha ha yes I can see it
🥳🥳🥳
Ha ha Thankyou - so glad to have it done and out. Don’t think there is so much UA-cam content on this
@@IlluminatingWatches The exagonal case is quite something. An up to date design could be awesome, and scarry for Casio. Thanks!
@@manusverzoni2384 they need to make more!!
D050 & D041 look like they are Knight Rider inspired
their best model is their full lume dial auto diver dont care for their numerous eco drives
Yes a lot of people are similar , but many only associate them with eco drive and they do much much more!
Citizen the Watchmaker’s Watchmaker
Cyber aqualand?
I may have missed it in this video. I’ve covered it elsewhere though. Fail!
Citizen is the watch for intellectuals.
The 3C53s look like a row of a.t.m machines. I.m.o.
Ha ha I can see that - needed to remind myself of the reference!
I’m dizzy
Hopefully in a positive way :)
pictures
Yes indeed :)
Really? The C-Shock? They didn't even try lol
Ha ha I know - I really want one of them as a curiosity . I enjoy a watch with a story behind it - even if it’s the manufacturer being a bit deviant
The C353 looks like a belt buckle or wrestling champ belt lol ugly
Citizen watches are so ugly and cheap looking it's kinda incredible you would think they were bad knockoffs of something else it's really too bad that the faceplates suck and the housing because they did have innovative features and the dial coloring is very smart
Fantastic video this 👏 my partner has just asked me what I was watching I said porn she replied watch videos then 😀 😄
Ha ha we are all so predictable
