I'm a suburban white dude who had a mother who loved Gladys Knight. Gladys ended up being the first concert I ever went to because of my mother. I was about 13 then. I'm now 56 and I've never stopped listening to her. In my humble opinion, the best female soul vocalist of our time. I don't think people realize just how great a singer she was.
Nobody - Nobody - NOBODY - can put it out there like this tiny giant of a woman!! There will never be another Gladys Knight!! She is the absolute queen!
Gladys has one of those voices that, as soon as she starts singing, you know it's her. She can be soft and gentle or she can let it rip. Either way, her vocal style is always distinctive. Thanks for giving this one a listen. It makes me tear up a little every time I hear it.
Just read in the news that Gladys had to extend her tour in Europe because of popular demand. People LOVE this woman she is almost 80 and people can't get enough of her singing. Not too many singers today will have that type of demand in their 70s
Gladys Knight is a beautiful, classy, uber-talented LADY who sang with subtle power and an *authenticity of expression* that is so sorely missing in the majority of today’s artists. And The Pips, comprised of male relatives of hers, provided perfect backing vocals (and smooth moves) that were enjoyable to our ears and eyes without ever stealing the focus of the whole - ALL done with elegance and impeccable taste.
Oh yeah Glady's is such an emotional & soulful singer. She is feeling those lines she's singing. Geez I was just a little kid in the 1970's but I remember seeing her and the Pips on TV. They left their mark and certainly Glady's did for sure.
This type of song and lryics is what I grew up with on the daily. This makes hearing the current day songs seem so substandard. Quality lryics, voice and melody are missed in this current generation. IMHO
This song came out in 73 and still gets me in my feels. As ya'll said, nobody can cover this song. The 'cry' she has In her voice when she sings this song makes you feel the pain. And BJ you're absolutely right that there's a whole lot of folks can relate to what she's singing. Loved the reaction❤
A group and a voice that is overlooked I think. Gladys was such a great singer. But I think they were in the middle of such a plethora of great groups. But they really stood out to me!❤
I Remember listening to this song back in the 70s... And thinking, This song will never tire, never sound old, everyone can relate to it, Gladys's voice was something very special.
This song was written by Jim Weatherly, who also wrote 'Midnight Train to Georgia' which was also performed GKATP. He is enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in Nashville. It's always interesting to find out the backstory to some of these wonderfully performed songs!
Boy you're bringing back memories when I was 20 years old and first met my future wife. Gladys always had that soulful voice that made you want to cry. You don't find entertainers like this anymore.
Such a heartfelt and emotionally epic song. Her voice, the lyrics, the backup singing by the Pips... just one of the best vocals in a song from my youth. The heartache, sadness and longing in her soaring vocals is so compelling! For me, this is the best song by her and the Pips.
This is such a fabulous song. Who can't relate to this?? And Gladys sings it with such feeling. And the Pips are terrific as ever. What a treasure they are to the pantheon of musical greats.
Instead of going to my High School prom in 1974 we went to a Gladys Knight concert. I have seen her numerous times throughout the years including one last year. She still sounds great! She is and always has been fabulous!!
My first great love was an American GI and we dated until he went back to the States. He gave me the Gladys Knight and the Pips album as a birthday present and always signed the back of each record with his wonderful writing. That was in the 70s! And guess what? We are still in contact with each other after 50 years. And the closeness never left ❣
Gladys was in her late 20s when this was released. To me the singles at the end of her Motown/beginning of Buddah was her purple patch. "Didn't You Know (You'd Have To Cry Sometime)", "If I Were Your Woman", "Make Me The Woman That You Go Home To", "Help Me Make It Through The Night", "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)", "Midnight Train To Georgia", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me",...."Part Time Love" etc
Fabulous Gladys Knight & the Pips! This is my favorite song by her. Thank you for playing and bringing back memories of my young days! Just turned 75!! You two are the sweetest couple. Don’t ever say goodbye, till God calls one of you home.
great song great vocals great reaction. so glad i saw Gladys knight and the pips sing this song and many more live beautiful memories of that magical night. love watching your reaction videos keep up the good work guys.
Aloha Asia and Bj!!! This song is Gladys Knight and the Pips sang became one of the best and possibly the biggest hit they made happen. The song song is very lovingly beautiful. And in 1974 they won a Grammy for this particular song. That's why it hits you both deeply. Aloha, and Mahalo both of you!!!
One of my all-time favorite ballads! Classic R&B! The emotions in her voice stirs your soul! Gladys Knight owns this jam! No one can top this rendition!
This Gospel Singing Family Would Make A Very Successful Transition To Mainstream Music,, The Staple Singers "I'll Take You There",, "Respect Yourself" & "Uncloudy Day"..ALL TRUE Classics.
She brings so much to her songs. You can feel the raw emotion through the melody, the words, the pauses and the softness contrasting with the powefulness. She is such a great artist and brings such craft to her performances. I admire her so much.
Written by Jim Weatherly who also wrote "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". 3 great songs for sure by Gladys & The Pips.
I love this song. It brings back so many fond memories. Gladys has a strong, soulful voice that lets your mind wonder back to those special days of our youth. Growing up in the Detroit area, we had so much of the Motown sound to enjoy every day. Gladys stands out. Awesome choice.
I could listen to Gladys’ voice for hours. She was recently honoured at the Kennedy Center Honors and the honor was so well deserved. She still sounds great even today. 👏👏🇨🇦
This is perhaps the best vocal performances ever recorded, imo. It’s a perfectly written song, but NO OTHER SINGER could have done this song right! I had the good fortune of seeing The Empress of Soul perform live. I melted in my seat 😍 She was my first big celebrity crush…and I’ll always love her music. This is why she’s the Empress!!
That one made me tear up ! This kind of music from the 70's when there was real true talent is long gone ! I'd say we gotta keep this kind of music alive , but it's doing a pretty good job on its own !
Thank you Asia & Bj, My Dad passed away in 1999 and Beloved Mother in 2008. Mom loved Gladys, she'd play "You're the best thing that ever happened to Me" for my Dad when they were Cruising. She'd play this Song and "Midnight train to Georgia" She loved Dionne Warwick: Anita Baker, Sara Vaughn, Etta James, Whitney Houston, Sade, Aretha, Roberta Flack, Patti Labelle, Diana Ross & Patti Austin. Dad was a Jazz Musician but he'd play alot of Lionel Ritchie tunes for Mom. I think of them when I hear Gladys, Especially "You're The best thing." Thank You.
I remember Gladys singing and Whitney in the crowd and she had tears coming down her cheeks. I get it. Asia probably loves to hear her because she know what a gifted voice sounds like.
You just can't imagine this kind of song being sung any better than Gladys, did, does,, meaning there's no one who can sing this song any better, it is Gold now and as it was when I first heard it. (another great song in my personal library)
Gladys was so great! She could make you feel the emotions she was singing. She did so much more than just sing lyrics; she sang with intimacy. I've heard it 110,000 times, but still ................ every time I hear "Midnight Train to Georgia", I get that sad/happy smile on my face and get goosebumps.
This is the Motown sound. This is staple music in my life. I grew up with this. The sound is the famous "FUNK BROTHERS" to see them I suggest you begin with Joan Osborne "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted"
Mercy this brings back so many memories. Gladys knight has one of those beautiful voices that you just have to stop and listen to anytime you hear it. Her music made my teenage years much more interesting...😁❤️❤️
I listened to Gladys Knight & The Pips sooo many times in the 70’s, when I was young & single, this group had it all 💜💥 Gladys singing just takes you away, you’re right there in the same room, listening to the lyrics, crying, heartbroken but at the same time in love with the message! Maybe they stayed together & didn’t say goodbye ? Check out Midnight Train To Georgia for another amazing recoding 🥰
Gladys voice is just so...I can't explain it! Her voice gives me chills! It is awesome.
Gladys could belt it out but dayum she can tear your heart out with the emotion she sings with.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Gladys Knight one of the great singers of all time.
The song is about broken hearts. When a 30 year old Gladys sung it, you heard it on the radio 15 times a day! Truth!❤
YES YES YES THIS WAS THE JAM BACK IN THE DAY
One of the best female soul singers of the 70's. Love her voice !
Of all time!!!😊
@@FuturologyTheMusical True! Of all time ever!
You know some really great voices came out of Motown in my 68 years I don’t think any of them that came near to Marvin and Gladys
@John M , We're the same age. I'll be 69 in September. I agree on your choices of Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight.
One of the best singers of all time!

You just can't beat 1970s classic R&B music or songs like this one from Gladys Knight & the Pips!
Gladys Knight had one of the best voices of R&B Singers. Such feeling in her vocals!💖
STILL HAS..THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME

Gladys sings this song so well and with such feeling that even if you're not in the situation she's singing about you feel like you are.
Gladys Knight is the "EMPRESS OF SOUL" and she is the epitome of CLASS!!!

She sings a live version of this song at age 72, powerful!
2015 Nashville Live I believe - hands down the best version (IMHO) - I had just posted the link and said the same thing
Can't believe it's already a 50 year old song. What's amazing is Gladys can still pull this song off at her age of 79.
It don't matter her age she was and is brilliant ! I loved her voice
That's why she is "The Empress of Soul". Something else to check out Gladys at Aretha's funeral, one of the most moving performances
Oh yeah Glady's is such an emotional & soulful singer. She is feeling those lines she's singing. Geez I was just a little kid in the 1970's but I remember seeing her and the Pips on TV. They left their mark and certainly Glady's did for sure.

Not only is she a great singer and beautiful, but a really nice person. I had the pleasure of meeting her on a flight decades ago.

Did you know that it started out as "Midnight Plane to Houston" Changing it to Georgia and a train was input from GK & Pips
Such a beautiful voice and song! Gladys always dressed so elegant but not overwhelming! Such a lady.
Gladys Knight does really change over the years, the soulful touch, when you hear her now, is the same. That's what we call a legend.
