I'm a suburban white dude who had a mother who loved Gladys Knight. Gladys ended up being the first concert I ever went to because of my mother. I was about 13 then. I'm now 56 and I've never stopped listening to her. In my humble opinion, the best female soul vocalist of our time. I don't think people realize just how great a singer she was.
Same for me🥹☺️😊🥰🤙🏾🔥🔥🔥
Gladys Knight is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
She was just amazing. I also like you loved loved loved her voice!
Why do ya'll keep saying "was", she's still with us?
Gladys has one of those voices that, as soon as she starts singing, you know it's her. She can be soft and gentle or she can let it rip. Either way, her vocal style is always distinctive. Thanks for giving this one a listen. It makes me tear up a little every time I hear it.
Gladys sings this song so well and with such feeling that even if you're not in the situation she's singing about you feel like you are.
She sings a live version of this song at age 72, powerful!
2015 Nashville Live I believe - hands down the best version (IMHO) - I had just posted the link and said the same thing
This song came out in 73 and still gets me in my feels. As ya'll said, nobody can cover this song. The 'cry' she has In her voice when she sings this song makes you feel the pain. And BJ you're absolutely right that there's a whole lot of folks can relate to what she's singing. Loved the reaction❤
Gladys voice is just so...I can't explain it! Her voice gives me chills! It is awesome.
This song was written by Jim Weatherly, who also wrote 'Midnight Train to Georgia' which was also performed GKATP. He is enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in Nashville. It's always interesting to find out the backstory to some of these wonderfully performed songs!
Did you know that it started out as "Midnight Plane to Houston" Changing it to Georgia and a train was input from GK & Pips
This is perhaps the best vocal performances ever recorded, imo. It’s a perfectly written song, but NO OTHER SINGER could have done this song right!
I had the good fortune of seeing The Empress of Soul perform live. I melted in my seat 😍 She was my first big celebrity crush…and I’ll always love her music. This is why she’s the Empress!!
I’d have to agree with you. She sang it live on the Midnight Special in ‘73 I think and crushed it. It’s on UA-cam. Amazing voice and talent.
@@joeimbesi5361 soul royalty 🎙️👑
Such a beautiful voice and song! Gladys always dressed so elegant but not overwhelming! Such a lady.
Reminds me of being a little kid when my mother played records in the house. Such a fantastic voice
Gladys! One of the best who does NOT get the attention she so easily deserves! ✌
Gladys was the first singer that absolutely stopped me in my tracks... at about age 8 or 9... and she has been stopping my heart ever since....
Back when I was around 9, or 10 I was over my grandmother's house. My cousin Gary was there. He was about a year younger than me. Gladys Knight and the Pips were on some show. And Gary was just losing his shit over her. Ever since then, I became a huge fan. I'm 60 now.
I believe 1972.saw her in Westbury with kool and the gang. A beautiful new hit .the girl I took after 5 years dating gave it 1 more try. But it was not a happy ending
This Gospel Singing Family Would Make A Very Successful Transition To Mainstream Music,,
The Staple Singers "I'll Take You There",, "Respect Yourself" & "Uncloudy Day"..ALL TRUE Classics.
an absolutely beautiful voice and song.
I keep coming back to this reaction because of your reaction and I love it! You're speaking the facts about Gladys's vocals. She is one of the most underrated female vocalists of all time. Talk about soul and power. OMG. There's no one like her.
In the early to mid-70s Gladys Knight and the Pips were like a breath fresh air. Their songs just stood out immediately as something special, which explains why they were so heavily played not only on every pop radio station but every R&B station too.
Oh my!! This is deep and moving. Only Gladys can make it feel so strong
What a voice this woman has! Always has been a top favorite singer!
This is the best of old school and today's music!! This is real life music. Nothing in today like this!!! You got the message!!! Love Gladys and the Pips saw them. In the 60's at the Uptown Theater in Philly She was teenager and so was I. Saw many great performers there!!! Love this and your reactions!!!😍😍😍
Straight raw emotion. Memorable song!
I feel that I could live a happy life just listening to R&B from the 60’s and 70’s. What a tremendous pool of great music.
My favorite R&B singer by far. I adore others, like Miss Roberta F., but their is something in her tone, phrasing and intonation. 70 year old dude in NC, love this woman and her talent. An iconic voice from the 70s, the decade of icons.❤❤❤❤❤
This and You're the best thing are my favorite songs by Gladys...I love this song. I'm glad you are able to appreciate it.
Gladys has been and will always be one of my favorite artists of all-time! ❤❤❤ You Girl!
Btw. Gladys was just about 28 years old when this was released.
3:38... "What is the word for it?"
Nostalgic?
Amazing to see their body language as the song takes them on the ride.
This song is timeless and just as powerful as when it came out 50 years ago 🙏
I'm from the uk and 65 we musically had the best earas coming home from a club I used to listen to her music in the dark it was amazing
i SAW THEM IN '68, & AGAIN IN '70. iN CONCERT GLADYS & HER BROTHERS WERE JUST AWESOME. AWESOME .-------------------MJL, 77 Y/O
Say it again…..as Whitney said, I can listen to Miss Gladys anytime and anywhere. That little church choir girl grew up and was blessed by god. People just loved her. God bless you mam.
Love that voice! She's a neighbor, see her in the stores occasionally.
The LEGENDARY Iconic Ms Gladys Knight and her Pips
This is my fave Gladys song.
it's Gladys Knight and the Pip! nuff said!😎
Deep and meaningful lyrics sung by a very beautiful voice. Different era.
Please check Gladys Knight doing “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” she actually recorded the song the year before Marvin Gaye and his iconic rendition. Love, love, love, Gladys Knights voice! 😁
So glad you got to hear that for the first time it really does hit different. A great song for the Empress Of Soul.
FYI: Gladys Knight, the Empress of Soul, was born on May 28, 1944. The Pips are her brother Merald ("Bubba") and her cousins Ed Patten and Bill Guest. At the time this chart topper and classic was released, she was 28. Check out one of their live performances so you can see the choreography as well as the vocals. I appreciate your reaction to this song. By all means, check out more of their work!
Gladys Knight is class personified. Her collard greens are pretty damn awesome too.
Love Gladys! Also must give props to Jim Weatherly who wrote this one, Midnight Train to Georgia(Originally Midnight Plane to Houston) and You're the Best Thing That Ever Happen to Me. He was also a QB at Ole Miss back in the day.
This song won Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals 1973, Glady's is always magical but this song the words her voice the music the epitome of a perfect song, this was Glady's(w/pips) next to last single (" Daddy Could Swear" another of many chart topping billboard hits) b4 leaving Motown records. On her new lable Budah records (where she would have even more chart topping billboard hits) the same year she won Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals 1973 for "Midnight Train To Georgia" Glady's(w/pips) is an extremly rare artist to peak and continue rising to new levels. You guys should really listen to her motown collection.
I first heard her voice on the radio at approximately 8 years old. That voice will always be my favorite female vocalist Gladys ❤
Pop Music like this was on the AM radio a lot then. She was a very good singer. "Midnight Train to Georgia" was a giant hit then. I like the lyrics more now, since I am older, and I can relate to it now.
Oh my, do I envy you! I'd give anything to hear an incredible song as this for the first time again.
That old school feel might be because of the Pips! Seriously, reminds me of the Doo-wop groups of the '50's.
Maybe mixed in with some '70's soul. Either way, that woman could sing. Wow...
this song comes from the heart
❤❤👍

IF I Were Your Woman is also amazing

Heard It Through the Grapevine, You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me, and, of course, Midnight Train to Georgia are their other classic hits. You can also hear and see Gladys sing in the movie, "I Can Do Bad All By Myself". She has always been a very classy lady and still is.
Check out her performance of this song on the Midnight Special. Amazing.
This song will get you every time. I see it got to you guys.
BJ would make a great Pip. 👍
For me...Gladys is the best soul singer ever. Her expression gives so much more to the emotion of the song
There is simply no other voice like Gladys Knight. And Berry Gordy thought she didn't fit into his formula for Motown.
She's still going strong at 78!
Gladys is just incredible. One of THE classic breakup songs. I love that in this song there's no anger and blame directed at the other person in the relationship.
One of the best singers back on the 70s ,and brings mi lots of memories.
From the same era, check out her song 'The Way We Were (Try To Remember)' or if you liked the riff, Angie Stone used it for her song 'No More Rain (In This House)'
You can't beat the Empress of Soul. You would love her duet with Boys II Men's "End of the Road." I saw her last year, and she hasn't lost a THING!
Now all I hear is Angie Stone singing My Sunshine has come which is sampled from this song and is also very beautiful ❤
My favorite Gladys song by far.
Pure gold!
Please listen to. Landlord. Another great Gladys 🎵 song.
OMG this was the breakup song for me and my GFs and our BFs high school! We loved Gladys and her Pips! 💔
Gladys is pure soul xx
What can I say the Queen has spoken.😊😊😊

Music for the ages ❤
Should have done the live version from their performance on Soul Train.
Special stuff. ⭐

Correction . She still has that voice.
Love songs
Beautiful
This is a classic
Others have tried, but no one else has ever come close to singing it the way she does
An interesting side note is that the song was written by a white, ex-quarterback for the Ole Miss Rebels
Who woulda thunk it?
Asia! Try singing this!!!!
Man this is a hit..check out number 1
I've got dreams to remember. Otis Redding.

Listen to if I were your woman and if you were my woman. The first being the pips and the latter being George Michael's cover
One of the best female soul singers of the 70's. Love her voice !
Of all time!!!😊
@@FuturologyTheMusical True! Of all time ever!
You know some really great voices came out of Motown in my 68 years I don’t think any of them that came near to Marvin and Gladys
@John M , We're the same age. I'll be 69 in September. I agree on your choices of Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight.
One of the best singers of all time!
Gladys Knight had one of the best voices of R&B Singers. Such feeling in her vocals!💖
STILL HAS..THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME
Nobody - Nobody - NOBODY - can put it out there like this tiny giant of a woman!! There will never be another Gladys Knight!! She is the absolute queen!
