Airedales served as guard dogs, messenger dogs and patrol dogs in WWI and II... There is a very large granite memorial to their service in Scotland.

My girl definitely fits all these traits. She was dumped, but the person who did doesn’t live far. One Airedale, and a black Poodle. She’s a spitting image and the truck we saw dump her, lives there! Oh well, she’s our girl now. What a smart breed they are, you can’t trick them into things like most dogs! I love her, but they’re kind of crazy. And grooming is a nightmare if they’re outdoor dogs (mine runs through the wood, comes back full of stick-tights). Definitely an active person’s dog, they love action. Great watchdogs too. They bark at anything out of the ordinary, blessing and a curse.
