Are these Orchids dead or alive? - saving Orchids through keikis
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 лип 2024
- I recently received some very sick Phalaenopsis orchids, which are more dead than alive. Luckily for us one has some keikis, so let's see what we can do.
▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
Now orchids are very resilient plants, when we think they are almost gone they can surprise us with life. However it is important to realize there is only one component of the orchid we need functional and this is the stem (axis).
These Phalaenopsis have most probably suffered from stem or crown rot, which is one of the worst ailments a monopodial orchid can face. Roots or leaves dying doesn't mean the entire orchid will die, but the axis being dead only means one thing: the orchid cannot be saved, no matter how many good roots, flower spikes and even leaf remains it has.
The reason is simple: the axis is responsible with the creation of all other structures, such as roots, leaves, spikes. If the axis is dead, there is nothing to create new structures.
Now we will attempt to save one of them through keikis, baby plants created on the flower spike which were not affected by rot. Separating them and placing them in higher humidity environments will help in the process.

A final update on the saved keiki ua-cam.com/video/YH4H-NgfUi4/v-deo.html
How about the small keiki, did it survive?
NIce, I'm new to your channel and I'm enjoying a lot your videos and I was wondering how those two fellas at 9:33 are doing right now :)
I am sure I am not the one who feels this way but i appreciate that you post videos everyday. It keeps your audience interested. I bet it's hard coming up with new and exciting things to post about. Keep up the great work!
I never thought I'd be so sad for a plant that has 'no chance of recovery'.
I think it's funny people thinks she talks too fast. She repeats the critical info. You just have to listen. If it matters, she says it twice. The rest is explanation that I found very helpful to my situation.
Ellie Antaya I can't stand slow speakers in videos! Good communicators get to the point, and don't take all day!
Hmm, orchids are like lizards I guess. A lizard can grow a new tail, but a tail can't grow a new lizard.
Exactly :D

My grandma's cattaleya and vanda orchids and i can remember the last one are sutable in charcoal
Neurons are the same way :D
Not yet anyways

don't give up. I have revived an orchid by just watering a chunk of roots! After a few months, leaves came out!
what was the frequency?
Hi Danny, thanks for the video. I guess I really have to let go my two mini phals which has nothing left in it. Roots and core totally dry and no leaves.
But I also want to brag on the other mini phal which I almost lost due to crown root. it grows a new crown from the side where there should be a spike. Wished i could share the photo with you. Have a great day!!
Thank you MissOrchidGirl ! You have been so much help! Thank you🥰👍
You are the Angel of Orchids! I’m following your advice from this video and I’ll share the results. Thank you, Thank thank!!
Your videos are so very informative and helpful...thank you for the lesson.
I loved this video! I can't wait for updates on these guys!
Looking forward to updates, sure hope they survive! 🌱
Another wonderful video Dani.!!!!

😂Cute!
Why would we ever give you a thumbs down? Thank you so much for your information. ❤️
I found a orchid like that nailed to a tree and set it in a tray of water and it sprouted 2 growth points. When I found it its roots where almost gone and now it is growing new roots.
Plants, birds and Nature was it touching the water?
You always do such a good job with your videos! I love your channel.
Omggg 06:10 soooo lovely! This is such a heartwarming video for me! I love orchids, my first one just bloomed and I'm sooo happy! Now im trying to revive three others ive found
Hi Danny! Are there any updates for these keikis? I’m very curious 😁 love your videos~ thanks!
interested to see how those two respond. it's always nice when they pull thru
Omigosh ! I learned so much ,I thought the roots that grew that way were flower stems and kept standing them up with clips .
Thank you! Lots of good information. I am going to try to save mine that was given as a gift. The one thing I’m not sure about. When I got it it it had( and still has) another plant with it. One of those cane type plants! What do I do?
thanks for this video I found this exact issue with a friend's orchid and now have a keiki
as a beginner I need to know what other medium you placed on top of the clay medium pebbles. At first there appeared to be about 1/4 cup of the pebbles. THen you skipped and the cup was full and 'planted'. Did you just add more clay around root? You mentioned something about coconut (?) but I got lost on that. Otherwise I did learn a lot.
Great video per usual! I do have one question however. Is the keiki over potted? I suppose it is OK because proper drainage?
Um I have watered from under the leaves, directly to the soil and my orchid seems to have stem rot! What should I do?!
I am thinking about getting into raising a few orchids and was wondering how do orchids reproduce? I am guessing you use the keikis but do you happen to have a video up about how you remove them from a living plant and what happens to the mother plant when you do remove them?.. Btw really nice videos I have seen about 3 so far and they are really informative and have great video quality :)
This was a great help . Thank you so much .
Can you make a vid about different orchid mediums and they benefit to different orchids? Thx
Thanks for the useful videos. I have an orchid. Not sure which one...I think I messed up on the roots, the crown is still largely green, but close to the roots it's more yellow and the roots are yellow too. Can you help?
Hi. Tell us where we can get the inorganic media you used for the keiki..thanks
I love the Keikis Keep us informed on their progress. I'm very interested to see what happens.
Hi and thank you for the video. I was wondering how to save an orchid that does have roots only cut the stem and there is still some green. Can it be safe? Thanks
I've read a little about keiki paste or rooting hormone paste. Would the little guy benefit from that would would it just tax him even more?
Hi Dani thank you for your information regards to the two keikis that I have growing on my phal one is quite large the other is a little smaller
but there are no roots showing yet the phal seems healthy but I think it needs potting on as it is quite large, I have noticed some evidence of mushroom type mould in the pot, what should I do? it seems quite healthy at the moment, I don't want the keikis to die if it can be avoided.
I have an orchid like the second one, it has suffered root rot but I still have some green roots. I thought it was dead, but it has just flowered. What should I do?
Dani, my dog mauled my beautiful phalaenopsis and most leaves are extremely damaged. Will infections take over the plant? Is it possible to cut off the damaged parts and try to get it to recover somehow?
This is a very interesting video since my wife has two orchids that look pretty dead. I will examine them more closely tomorrow.
What's happening if I keep some rots out of pot when it's repot
great video! I am in the exact same position from the second keiki. Can you please tell me the update of these two keikis?
H miss orchid girl I have my phalanopsis for 3 years it has been flowering my spike is still growing and what r the chances for a kieki to bloom without the paste
I have some dead roots i can see on my plant but i just repotted it 2 months ago and i have new roots coming.should i report?
very helpful ideas on caring for orchids
Did we have an update on these guys yet? I really hope the littlest one survives.
yes it survived
i had one just like the one with out the keikis i water culture it for a few week and i got two keikis but like you said nothing we can do for the mother plant
Hi, how about if an orchid has a tiny leaf coming out and a couple air roots? Can it be saved?
This is so exciting! Can't wait for updates, I really hope that the smaller keiki makes it even without her mamma
I've heard that the big plant helps regulating moisture in the pot :)

My husband bought me a beautiful orchid for Mother's Day. And eventually the leaves started yellowing. Turns out the wooden stick they used to hold the flower was causing root rot. I was hoping to save it. I guess.... I can't 😔😔
Hi. Just wanna tell you that your video is very educational. I have an orchid that is growing quite nicely and thick. It has long stem from previous flower. Just realised that there is a keiki at the end now. Should I remove the Keiki and repot them or leave them as they be?
The talcum inside the gloves you can replace it with cornstarch. Sometimes i like gloves with talcum because it makes it easier for my hands to slide into them. Non-talcum gloves are fine too.
Hello, if in the midle it still green what can we do
Do you still recommend not fertilizing orchids with few roots? I saw an old video of yours in which you recommended that.
I have a question and that question is if the crown has mold on it and all of the leaves died off and it’s just a green stem for where the flowers bloom from would their be any way for me to save thee orchid and have it grow back all of the leaves?
Any updates on these two orchids?
Is there an update on these two? It's only been 3 months but I'm sure curious! thx, you've been a very good teacher :)
April the giraffe
I am also interested as I currently have 2 dead looking phal. Looks like MissOrchidGirl do not respond to any of the questions.
I’d sure like at least a quick photo of the “after” rescue as well.
those roots are all attached to a core. Both can be saved. A dead core would be identified by dying roots starting at the core. Trim away almost to core. Add keiki paste and put in agar as you would seeds.
Does she ever reply ?
Whts the name did you use for potting
For a while, I've been using tissue culture methods to try and save teeny tiny cuttings and pieces of plants in critical condition. It sometimes works, but usually not, espceially since I don't have the right materials to do it properly right now :(
So, its a year later, How did these orchids do?
Great job!
Is there any way I can send you a picture of my orchid I think it’s not gonna make it
What's the best sphagnum moss to use for orchids. I have a dying orchid that I want to save after watching this video. Thank you!
This was great, thanks!
Hi, I want to know if these two survived or not?
What happens if the blooms of the orchid have brown or black spots on them?
Hello, question my orchid has a lot of keikis and a green stem but the roots are short, gray/white and crunchy is my orchid dead?
I have a friend that has an orchid that has a terrible brown core and crown. However it has a big flower spike that's green and some good roots. Is there a way to encourage a Keiki?
do you have an update on how the keiki's went? did both survive?
Very helpful thank you 😊
Very interesting and informative great video.
Hi I repotted my dandrobium orchids today. The bark is dry. I spray the mist that came in the kit. When do I need to water?
How long does it take for a kiekie to get roots?
Can I save it, it looks dead on top but have green stems under earth can I sawe it?
Very Informative n Rewarding
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, I am so sad about my beautiful orchid. Phalaenopsis Angel. Is it difficult or am I just without green fingers?
Very grateful if you have time to answer I am in my kitchen trying to give it the lazt breath of life now.🤗
Great video , like it ,thanks ...

How do I get my orchid to grow the keikes
hi please put the link to update thanks:)
I had an orchid like the first . I gave her water like the others. Suddenly she had a new tiny leaf after 10 days a second and...........I didn't know what to do .....
After a month I lost both leafs and roots.
Nothing .all brown!
Powdered gloves arw usually latex which has become a very common allergy these days.
Nitrile is synthetic and al9most nonallergenic.
I was given my Orchid 4 years ago by a close friend who is no longer with us.
Sadly it looks my plant which has given me many flowers over the years is now passing on as well.
oooooh this was a great video!
I have 3 orchids (all have lost their flowers) one is in pretty decent shape but the other 2 only have maybe 1 or 2 good roots to them. 1 has grown a new leaf so I'm assuming it's still alive
My orchid just fell apart due to fungus that I didn't catch early enough and now I'm spiraling looking for ways to save it. It has healthy roots and a spike, I'm hoping a keke grows
Hi there! Where can i find updates :D
I recently had a surprise after I sprayed for spider mites in cooler weather and I think water must’ve gotten trapped and the stem rotted. Completely gone but I was too lazy and put it on a bottom shelf and forgot about it. Few months later, it has a keiki poking out from underneath with two leaves. It must’ve had some part left , underneath the bark but it looked just like the first one on top. I am hoping it has enough left to grow a root of its own now.
Ok, thank you for these videos because there is so much information out there. I love orchids, and although mine are doing ok, I now know not to water them from the top and when they actually need water. Much appreciated.
it may be better to put directly on the leaves, which is the smallest? The stem may rot ...
I am totally ignorant about orchids, so I am likely to be wrong. I have seen some vandas in the wild popping new growths from their roots (or so it looked to me). Is this possible for vandas
prayers for them both. 😄👍💚
You taught me we much hugs and xxx
Hi.. will you help me how to save this dying orchid?
Can you give an update on these?
We have an orchid but the stem died. Can you make it grow another one.
I wish I can thumbs up it twice!
I have just 2 orchids. I knew not to water from above. However, I still (I think) just killed my 1 mini phal orchid by it getting watered from above. Not purposely, but I completely spaced off the fact that it was directly below my Spanish moss and other airplants that I regularly mist. I guess the water was dripping from the moss down into my orchid and now its floppy, yellowing bottom leaf and some darkening in the crown and out to the leaves. So sad, as I worked so hard to keep my plants alive and was doing so well for so long. I revived it once already as it had root rot when I first purchased it. I re potted it after cutting bad roots and it put on so much new growth. Now this is happening. Ugh.
I am trying to rescue this orchid. Could you please help me. I got pictures but don’t know how to send it to you
Please tell me if my Phal can be saved, all the leaves came off but there is one tiny little green nub in the middle. Can she be saved!?
I'm in the same boat and wondering the same thing!
Thank you very good information but I think I’m too late 😢 my poor Orchid
