Rejuvenating stressed Orchids Part 1 - Limp, leathery leaves

  • So here I am sorting out the Phalaenopsis orchids I received for our anniversary. Most of them just need some attention, some require a bit of work, so this video is split in 2 parts. In part 1 I talk about general aspects in dealing with a stressed orchid.
    ▼▼▼More info bellow!▼▼▼
The Phalaenopsis in this video is looking rather sad. The leaves are limp, they have no gloss and developed wrinkles. This is a clear sign of dehydration. But to determine the cause of dehydration we need to take a look at the roots.
A repot is always a good idea with new orchids, as it gives you the chance to take a look at the roots, see if the medium is suited for you or if you have any pests hiding in there. So I discovered this orchid has a decent root system, but the stem was cut in the past. This means the orchid might be older than I thought. I also use hydrogen peroxide 3% to limit fungi or snails, to learn more visit this video • Using hydrogen peroxid... it can be used on fungal spots and roots to prevent snails.
Overall this plant is not sick, she just needs some hydration and proper care. In part 2 we will look at some more stressed and even sick orchids.

Hey guys! Just reminding you that in the description you will find additional links related to today's video and also links to my Orchid Care for Beginners series, Care Tutorials for Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas, Oncidiums, etc., links to products I use & more! I receive so many comments and messages daily on all my platforms, it is impossible for me to get to all, but I try to link videos on the most common questions in the descriptions of my videos. You can also search for answers on almost ALL orchid related topics by typing in the UA-cam search bar 'missorchidgirl' followed by the orchid subject you want to learn more about! I have many many videos and I think you'll find a video from me on the subject, just in case I don't get to answer your comment. Thank you! 😘🧡

Thank you!! One of my moms orchids grew TWO keikies (idk how to spell it) before it died :( she did not take care of her orchids but i thought it was such a sweet story. This mama orchid made two babies to carry on her legacy because she knew she was dying, she did give all her energy to make them and then died. I have since potted the keikies but they both had leathery leaves and one leaf on each was starting to yellow. This helped very much! They are def just lacking water

I will have to repot an orchid sometime next week, she's in a transparent pot and I can see some roots that needs to be removed, it was just too much of a task to wrestle with an orchid with no less than 5 flowerspikes and a keiki to boot. I bought her mid november from the store and she just finished blooming. She's doing really well so far but I may want to transfer her to a bigger pot. 😇
At the same time I am trying to keep my 2nd year in a row keiki producing mother orchid from getting leathery like she became in 2019 in fall when she still had the first keiki, my suspicion is that we didn't pay enough attention to watering her when she needed it but everyone was watered on the same schedule. Both mother and keiki are looking good though. And big sister keiki is also receiving special attention which was rewarded with a new root after 6 months of waiting. It was a big day, very much a milestone. 😆

Some of the leaves on my Orchid are limp. Not all of them just a few. I only water when all the roots are silverish so I am not over watering. And when I water some of the leaves do get firmer but the few I mentioned are still a little limper than them, so I don't think I am under watering. I just repotted so it is not a problem with old mediam or pests in it. It is almost a year old and this is a resent problem so I don't think it is stress from being mishandled at the store. I cut the spike near the base so it is not draining the energy from the plant. I am using a good 19-8-16 fertilizer to encourage growth. They are not the tiny old leaves that are supposed to fall off I think, they are fairly large and they are not yellow. They are not the top ones, they are two leaves below and one of them is the lowest leaf currently, the tiny ones have already fallen off. I don't know what else it could be. Do you have any advice?

Have you used Super Thrive in the water that you soak your dehydrated Phals in? It can help the leaves plump up some (not always completely). You have to soak if not for a few hours, then overnight. The roots don’t usually get soaked that long. I kind of dunk them in so the leaves are all covered. You can repeat the process a couple of times while letting the leaves have about 12 to 24 hours of rest in between. Also, after reporting you can must the leaves on the top and bottom and then rub the water “into” the leaf. Do this several times a day. My mom would help and do it every time she went past the orchid. This helps also.

Thank you so much for your videos. I know zero about orchids. I received two for mothers day. It's still in bloom. One was just like the one in this video. I didn't repot it cause it is still blooming. I watered it but still it remained floppy. So I soaked it until the roots turned green. They tended to stay silver even when I watered it. I didn't know that was a sign that this plant could be dehydrated. So now she (the orchid) is happy. No more hissy fits😉

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and know how on Orchids. I have 3 orchids that I picked up at the grocery store several weeks ago. I followed all of your directions on disinfecting and repotting. Fortunately I saw nothing that looked like it was attacking the orchids but the leaves on all of them are limp and leathery they just flop over the sides of their pots. I water by immersing them for 15- 20 minutes 1x a week and in between watering if the bark gets dry I mist the roots well. They are in plastic pots with holes all around. Is it possible they need watering more often. The roots look green and plump. I’m at a loss any suggestions ? Thanks

I recently purchased a mini phelaenopsis, at most 8 inches tall. It was in the clearance section at my local grocery, and it was just so cute. I've had it for a couple weeks and it's still in bloom but recent;y the blooms have started to shrivel. After some research, I took immediate action to see what the roots looked like. They were ALL dead, save HALF of one root. I noticed that a lot of the roots were previously cut, and the base was enclosed in some kind of thick sponge, and it was just awful. I mean there was just slime and all the roots were hollow. I snipped off all the roots, save that little half of root, and then I dabbed some peroxide on it.
I'm keeping the poor thing in a plastic container just to dry out now. Do you have a recommendation of how I can ensure the life of my mini?

At 3:20, you mentioned that the stem of your Phal was cut. Does that mean it's ok to cut/trim the stem when it's too long. I have Phals that are 6 years old or older. The stem just keeps getting longer as leaves die off over the years. Repotting becomes a problem since they would need deeper and deeper pots through the years just to contain the stem.
Do you have a video where you show the stem being cut? Thanks.

Hi! I just repotted two Phalaenopsis orchids that were bought at a grocery store, regardless of the fact that they are blooming; the roots were starting to rot, and it looked like the orchids were severely over-watered. I have a question, though: do I need to water the medium after I repotted the orchids even though they looked overwatered? The directions on the medium says to water afterwards, but I'm so afraid to do that.

My phalaenopsis' spike has begun to dry out recently, and the leaves have even yellowed and dropped off;; I pollinated my orchids months ago and her pod is the biggest and looks like it has the most potential. And as the spike is drying up to the pod, I'm worried that if I would need to cut it due to sickness or something else, would I need to cut it from the base; should this happen, is the pod still salvageable ? The watering routine has been regular, and the roots don't look like they're ailing or dry, I don't know what is wrong. Could I get some advice please ?

I changed the plastic pot to another plastic pot with holes all over it and changed the bark to I believe charcoal, watered it every Sunday, its been blooming now and they just started falling off the leaves are starting to get yellow and some have wrinkles in them with marks on them like little spots brown dots. I do not get water in the center and keep it in indirect light . What should I do re pot to clay in which I have some then what? thanks

Hi Danny! I just got discounted stressed phal orchid. Its problem is that it was potted with A LOT of moss. The roots are firm and yellow. The leaves arevperfect. What do I do to repot it correctly?

    @littleminna 5 років тому

Oh I've got one or two looking like that. They've only got two small wrinkly leaves left on them each. So I hope it's not too late that they can survive. I have to admit I've had my orchids for many many years and I've never repotted them, not even once.🙈 So I'm going to do that today! I've got the orchid medium already.

Oh boy! I've sure got a lot of questions. I wish I could post my pictures and questions somewhere. 😁🙈 Well, I started on my worst looking Phaleanopsis, and as it turns out it has no live roots in the bottom, everything was dead. The only live roots it's got left are the aerial ones, the ones that were on top. I think this orchid is really old, and my question right now is whether there's any point in trying to revive this, may be all hope is lost for this poor guy. Too late maybe? Anyway, how to describe this? Let me try under it's aerial roots (by now I've cut away all the dead roots) it's just got this black long thing downwards...like an iceberg but black. Like a tree trunk, pointy at the end. What is this? Am I better off just throwing away this orchid?

Listening to this video a 2nd time I hear you talk about "a stem" I just realized that that's what the long black thing is that's on my orchid. You can see where old leaves have broken off and old stems too.

Hi! Ive got a weird situation with my phalaenposis which I bought a few months ago from Home Depot. It came in sphagnum moss, and I repotted it in Miracle Grow bark medium. It is in a shaded, east-facing window. The roots were in terrible shape when I repotted; I attempted to cut some of the roots and what happened was that lots of vellum came off leaving the string inside. The strings continue to grow, but the remaining roots w/vellum look horrible. None of the vellum are green. The leaves are leathery and limp, but the flower spikes are still green. I water this particular orchid twice per week. Any advice for me and my poor orchid?
I would really appreciate any advice, and I am happy to provide photos. Thank you so much, I love your channel!

Depending on how bad off the orchid is, how long should it take to rehydrate limp, leathery leaves?

I think my orchid has no hope. I saw the Black mold and used peroxide. Now the leaves are leaning. The roots look good, but I think it's over for my orchid. If only I found your channel months ago.

Hey Danny! Question for you my phalaenopsis orchids leaves are limp and drooping, not firm like they use to be. I repotted them with repotme media, remove old roots and clean them up a bit. I water them about every week and a half. Why are they not getting better?

Can I get more medium from a regular nursery? Is there a better medium brand than another? My husband got me a blooming orchid for mother's day. It is finished blooming and want to give it a good continuing life. Thanks for your time.

I just repotted my newly purchased phals and changed the medium from sphagnum moss to LECA. Bud blast happened first. Then I lost two bottom leaves that turned yellow and now, their leaves are getting limp and they feel soft when I squeeze them a bit. And now, I’m clueless what I did wrong. 😭

Hey, I'm new to orchids. Got one for my birthday. Which was about two weeks ago.
All its leaves fell off, I think the crown's rotting. The flowers seem to be doing just fine, the roots are doing okay, almost all are green. I think a few white spots here and there around the crown are found. Also, I'm contemplating on whether I should use insecticides for gardening on this, since it seems there are some critters.
    I feel like it's a lost cause.

I've just become obsessed with orchids and think your videos are great. Should the roots always be exposed? I received one as a gift but as well as being planted in a clear pot it sits in a white plastic one - I presume that this to make them more saleable. :-)
It is also growing in some kind of sawdust but I want to repot it now that it has finished flowering. Should I use a slightly larger clear or clay pot and leave the roots exposed? What do you think of orchids being grown in peat moss? Are miniature orchids the ones that are called Singapore orchids?

Hi Diane, how are you? :D hope drawing goes well ;) about the roots, the ones that grew in the air (aerial roots) should be left outside of the pot when repotting, but the ones that grew in the pot can be potted in medium at your next repot. And yes the decorative pot is used to stabilize the orchid. When you repot you can chose either the clear plastic pot, either the clay (unglazed, not decorative) pot, they don't need to be exposed to light necessarily and also the aerial roots will still appear and they will photosynthesize. The bonus that clear plastic pots give is that you can see the roots developing inside, also you can see when the medium is dry and needs water. About that powder, I think it might be some mold, this means the medium is getting old and breaking down so after the flowers are done (if the orchid doesn't look stressed already, meaning limpy leaves or dying roots) a repot is needed. I have a video on repotting Phals here ua-cam.com/video/v9FN6HBokzU/v-deo.html hope this helps :)

Many thanks Danni. The orchid is still in flower and looks fine except for a couple of leaves that aren't the best (a bit rubbery and droopy) When I re-pot it will the flowers drop? It seems to be growing in the "sawdust" and no other medium, which seems strange. It probably needs feeding?? I'll certainly use bark next time and hopefully the leaves will then recover.

It looks like I only have aerial roots on my phalaenopsis. Leaves are wilted, she doesn't give up as I see more aerial roots developing and it looks like 1 flower stems have developed. All doors that were in the medium have died. What can I do to help her?

Help ! I received a Phalaenopsis orchid a few weeks ago as a gift and the first time that I watered from the bottom and let it drain well the roots turned back nice and green. The next I watered I put some orchid food in the water and now a couple of the roots look swiveled and did not turn back green like they did the first time. I am thinking that I may have put to much orchid food in the water. Other than the 3 or 4 roots that have swiveled my orchid looks good. It is in full bloom and the leaves and roots on the inside are nice and green and I plan on transplanting my orchid after blooming is over, remove any dead roots and plant it in fresh media soil for orchids. My question is Should I take it out of the tiny container it came in and rince the soil and roots in case I used to much orchid food so it won't burn up the roots, or should I just let it continue to dry out until my next watering ? Any answers or advice from those of you who are exsperienced with orchids would be appreciated. Thank you & God Bless
