Last Christmas my sister from another Mr who didn't have a clue about yarn, went to my LYS and spoke with the owner who knows me from going there and together they put together a gift for me. A project bag with a skein of hand dyed yarn, a super soft pompom, a little tin with stitch markers but enough room to add some other notions if I wish. I was totally blown away because my friend knew nothing about yarn but it was the perfect gift. The Yarn store loves to help people like that and help put together things so if you aren't sure, go to the yarn shop, tell them your budget and let them help you, they enjoy it!
I love that!!! See that to me just shows so much love 🥰
@@akaNoraKnits it was such a thoughtful gift and meant so much to me.
My favorite suggestion didn't make the list! I feel I need to add it, so really cute stitch markers. There's a ton of options on Etsy with everything from different kinds of foods, animals, tiny little socks, and even books. I had a bunch of them that I adored, though most of them are now lost after years of use. I'm always happy to get new, cute stitch markers, progress keepers, and things like that. Project bags can be a cute idea too, especially if you know they like to travel with their knitting.
Funny thing is a lot of the things on this list, I don't really use or have interest in, so it's definitely a "know your knitter" kind of thing. If it's something I have to remember, like to actively use my row counter, or to put the caps on my needles instead of just sliding them down the cable, or using the end caps for the cable, I probably won't actually remember them. I don't like anything around my neck either, though I did get a ring light (which my family jokes is my "TikTok light") for cheap and that's been indespensible as a project light for me. The rocker idea, though, if I went to more outdoor events, that might be a choice to consider. Even for when I'm not knitting, that might be a good choice!
So true! See, I feel similarly about stitch markers! I purchased a pack of the light bulb markers back when I started knitting and then just never felt the need for the cuter ones. I think they're adorable, but I would need to keep track of them in order to use them, so I just haven't felt the need.
If you've never used a row counter before, they really do come in handy for textured projects or keeping track of decreases--even stripes! So I've found those to be particularly handy! I love using a ring light for the best lighting scenario and can definitely see not wanting to have something around your neck.
Highly recommend the rocker for the whole family!!! Thanks for sharing your suggestions!
@akaNoraKnits I've tried to use a row counter. The problem is I end up forgetting to change it, so I'm always second guessing myself. Instead I use a progress keeper or lockable stitch marker to keep track of pattern repeats and changes for things like lace charts. I know knitters that swear by them, but I've never managed to get that level of organized!
Nora, ❤❤❤the podcast. Have you done an Ask Me Anything video? Bc I have so many questions!!!!! Can you give us a background on how you achieved so much in less than a year of knitting. Like, I know you talk abt being a hairdresser stylist, did that experience help w learning to knit somehow? Or was it your 6-7 yr experience in crochet? Did you already knit flat things (simple scarfs) & then really get into extensive knitting this past January (I think that's how long you said you have been knitting). Sorry for the ?s but I'm frankly amazed at your ability to jump right into techniques I found challenging (I've knitted for 20+ years & haven't really done any sweaters). Is it just you jump in just do it (no fear)? I mean a cabled sweater is AMAZING, as well as your cardigan & that amazing dress. What is the secret to advancing so fast? How many hours a day did you work? Did/do you have a mentor? Are you just a self-taught knitting genius? These are questions I ask while I watch you. Plz do an ask me anything video (& how are you also so good at video editing)? Are you bad at ANYTHING?!😂(only 1/2 joking). Yout channel is like knitting w/a friend & bc I don't have a knitting community, I love listening to them. I especially appreciated your comments on the fiber festival re others who are snooty abt acrylic blends & such. Our local yarn store seemed to be run by ladies who knew each other & didn't seem interested in "outsiders". It's nice to find online knitters who are "normie" crafters. Your admitting to not knowing everything (& using more budget friendly fiber)is encouraging to your viewers. TY.❤
Thank you so so much! I am thinking of doing one before the end of the year, but definitely in the new year if not! You are too too kind! I think I’m just a generally curious and creative person. I have a habit of looking at something and needing to try and make it. I’m glad that it’s paying off here 😅
That chair is pretty slick, not gonna lie I'm imagining knitting in it on a camping trip. 🤩
In my opinion a good, albeit pricey gift, for a new knitter would be a yarn swift and winder. When I was new to knitting I loved buying the beautiful skeins of yarn in the twisted braids but I had no idea how to ball them and wound up tangling them more than once before I got the swift. I spent hours untangling yarn in frustration but now I cake up everything and I'm so happy with it.
It genuinely is a must! I’m hoping it goes on sale for the upcoming weekend! It would make your whole camping trip! I second the swift and winder. Total game changer!
You're spoiling us with all these not saturday extra videos!
💁🏻♀️🥰
Unrelated but I sing along w your intro every time!!!
Me too! My cat looks at me with distaste though! 😅
I found myself singing her theme song just randomly the other day. 😅
This brings me immense joy! 🥰
If your knitter is over 50, like me, consider adding a tube of Voltaren gel or ben gay and a bottle of NSAID's to the basket LOL! The more I knit the more I need it!
😂😂😂 throw is all in there!
I use my iPad and Apple Pencil for my knitting patterns too! I have a case that allows me to set it up so I can follow along, highlighting along the way so I stay on the correct row. Also, before I start a pattern, I go through the pattern and highlight the stitch counts throughout the pattern that pertain to the size that I am making. This has been a game changer for me!
Yes! Sounds like we have a similar setup! It's such a luxury!!!
My top wish list item this year is a wooden swift. Sock blockers, wooden dpn set, microwaveable heat pal are also top items.
Oooh I second dpns!
Wishlist: I plan to buy myself a yarn swift for Christmas. I recently bought the Stanwood ball winder and love it, so the swift will complete my yarn winding pleasure package!
yayyyy! treat yo'self!!!
Your editing skills are terrific. I was the one who asked a few weeks back if you are the one singing and playing music in your intro/outro. If you answered me it got lost in all of my notifications. But I’m going to watch this time very closely! Your work is impressive.
Thank you so much! You are right, that’s me! Good ear 😉🥰
Congrats on 5k!🎉 Also, just found your podcast through your Rhinebeck video… and now I can’t get your intro song out of my head 😅
Same!
Thank you so much!!! It literally lives rent free in my head as well 😂
Another great gift to give a knitter is a blocking mat set. They are great for sweaters, shawls, cowls, and so much more.
I see you hit 5K! WOOOOO HOOOOO!!! Time for cake. Congrats.
Yes! Totally a great gift! And a good steamer! Thank you!!! Cake sounds fitting! 💛🥰
You have such an adorable personality! Thanks for the cute gift ideas 😊
Thank you so much! 🥰
This is great list! I second the gift card/ certificate, I would love one to a specific online store that I’ve been wanting to purchase from. While I would love to receive yarn as a gift, I think it would be better to pick that out myself because I have specific projects in mind with specific yarns. The neck fan and neck light are two items that would be great. I work in a hot environment in the summer and I saw someone come in with a neck fan, not knowing they even existed, and thought it was ingenious. My gift this year was a set of Chiaogoo interchangeable needles. Its a bigger ticket purchase that was a combo birthday/Christmas gift and I know it’s going to get a lot of use, I just got so tired of always having to purchase specific circulars for each project and held off on projects because of having to purchase new needles. The iPad is a great idea too, I use mine a lot for knitting patterns and it’s also great for tutorials when you get to a part of a pattern that you have trouble figuring out. This is probably the best list that’s been compiled for gifting for knitters, lots of useful ideas, great job!
Thank you so much! I know not everyone would love receiving yarn, so I totally get that! I hope you love your chiaogoo set! I think interchangeables just make knitting so simple and convenient! Well worth the investment!
@@akaNoraKnits You’re welcome! I’m so excited to start a project with them!
I am team row counter but have only really used those little plastic ones that you twist to count up or down (I thread some yarn in it and make a small loop with it and then clip it threw the yarn loop to the bottom or the side of my work) .... i really do want to try one of those chain style row counters that stays on your knitting needle I may order this for myself this year to try .... things i have already gifted myself is some fun progress keeper charms a little snowman wearing knitwear and some small Christmas lights to mark my repeats .... oh they make me smile looking and feeling so fun and festive
That's such a smart hack for your row counter! I had a chain one that unfortunately broke, but it made life so much easier! I'll definitely be grabbing a new one soon! Love that for you!
OR...maybe we are here because we love Nora! 😉❤
🥰🥰🥰
I loved this video idea! It's great to send it to your loved ones when they ask you what you would like for Christmas or your birthday!!
Exactly! My family hounds me until I give them something, so now it’s all in one place!
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ❤❤❤ from Lithuania 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you!!! 💛🥰
Another great video full of helpful ideas! The chair really intrigues me. Sitting down for a moment on Thanksgiving to watch this and give my feet a rest and do some knitting. Hope your vest turned out the way you were hoping. Do you know how when a song gets stuck in your head and plays over and over? That happened to me yesterday with your opening song! Too funny. Thanks again for a great video.
I'm glad you found some inspiration! I'm telling you, the chair is just the best thing if you like to knit outside! My vest is everything I wanted 🥰 My own theme lives in my brain 24/7 😅 Thanks for hanging out!
Congratulations on hitting 5K lovely!! Cx
Thank you!!! 🥰
I really want a swift. I have the ball winder already, but my life would get so much easier with a swift
Yes! And a good one at that! Mine is very aesthetic but totally lacking in function 😅
I received blocking pins, the kind that have multiple points, as a gift, which was nice. I have interchangeable needle and cord sets on my wish list this year, but the gifter would need to know which ones are preferred. Great video and list!
Oooh I meant to add those to my list! I feel like needles are just so personal, it’s hard to gift them! Though it would be nice to treated! Thank you 🥰
great new ideas for us knitters! love the chair idea. another tool I always give now, I've forgotten the brand, but its a set of wooden darning needles in a wooden cylinder holder. great for weaving in the dreaded ends
Yayyy! I love the sound of that. I got a little tube of darning needles this year and what a huge difference it made to have them contained! Wood sounds beautiful too!
Neck lights are amazing! I have a couple, and they’re different brands. For brightness, I find the one you had with the ridges is far and away the brightest, but isn’t quite as flexible. I also have one that’s highly advertised on social media. While I like how bendy it is, it’s considerably dimmer than others. Loving the pod cast!!!
So good to know! Those damn ridges! Thank you so much 🥰
I love your earrings!!!
Thank you! (they are from Walmart 😉)
I use Knit Companion on my iPad but man oh man have I been wanting the Apple Pencil to go with it!
It’s such a silly trinket that makes all the difference in work flow!
I bought a ‘generic’ smart pencil for mine on Amazon. I really like using it with Knit Companion.
Vogue knitting journal???? Sounds interesting 🤔
Love this!
I have been thinking about the neck-light. So handy! And that chair is such a great idea
Highly recommend a neck light! Just be careful to get one without the little ridges in the bendy part! Your hairline will thank me 😅 the chair is a MUST for me! I swear I’ve got my whole family hooked!
Great video.... Thanks for all the tips!
Thank you! Happy to help!
🎉 Congratulations on 5k!!! 💃🏻🕺🏻
Thank you!!! 🥰
Congrats on 5K Nora! ❤ Great list, Love the chair idea!
Thank you so much! It is a total must!
Nice list.
😊🎉 congratulations on 5K subscribers!! And, thanks for another great episode! Some these I’d love to receive or even gift myself! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Thank you sooo much 🥰 I’m glad you found some inspiration!
Congrats on 5K! I added myself to your subscribers too so here's to 10k in the future! I know i am always needing tape measurers (cause I lose them) amd stitch markers are always fun to me! Also tiny scissors I can keep in my knitting bags are always needed!
Thank you! A girl can dream 🥰✨ yes! I was just saying tape measures are something you can never have enough of!
Congratulations 🎉 on 5k subscribers! Your videos are so much fun and so well done.
Thank you for the great gift ideas! I love the portable rocking chair.
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🍁
Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Thank you so much! 🥰 it is a MUST! Happy Thanksgiving to you!
On my wish list:
A full interchangeable circular needle set
A nice wooden yarn swift
A larger cake winder than the one I’ve got
Nice scissors
A big yarn bowl
One of those swivel cake holders so my cakes can spin while I knit
Stitch markers, preferably something cute and pretty with glass beads
Gift cards to my local yarn shop
Bare yarn to dye myself
Ooooh I like the bare yarn idea! That sounds like fun!!
Yes to the bare yarn! I really want to start to dyeing, that’s my goal in the new year
Thank you for the info on knitting gift tips. I think if I received a gift of more yarn 🧶 for myself through a subscription I would be thrilled.
Oooh that’s a great one!
❤️ your videos! Have you experienced any charging issues with your neck light? I have the same one (I usually have my hair up in a ponytail) and over time I noticed that it is not charging as well as when I first received it as gift. Has that happened with yours?
Oh no!! I haven’t noticed that with mine, but I also don’t use it as much now that I have an ikea clamp light at my knitting chair
I’m surprised that a swift or yarn winder didn’t make it to your list.
Definitely a great gift!
As a crafter, I would be so pissed off if someone gifted me yarn so I could make something for them. I highly disagree with that take. I feel like that's giving a "gift" only to take it back later. It feels like gifting work. Some people only craft for themselves, and thats okay. Not everyone is knit worthy. This is not a good idea, especially if you don't really know the person or anything about yarn. People can be allergic to certain fibers ( I have a friend who breaks out in a rash if she handles alpaca), they may only work with certain weights for ease of use/comfort level (some people can't handle chunky yarn because of the strain it physically puts on their hands, same for fingering).
Support LYS if and when you can over big places like Amazon (it's not a reality for some people, I understand, but $50 is going to mean a lot more to an LYS than Amazon). Local yarn stores will stock up on gift ideas for knitters specifically for nonknitters looking for gifts. There is nothing wrong with buying a gift card from a specialty store like a local yarn store. If you get the recipient a gift card, make it a date, "hey I know you like this place, let's get coffee/lunch and go together so you can show me what you like and I can learn more about you ❤".
If you do buy yarn, make sure to give a gift receipt just in case.
Omg! Get that neck fan for your mom! Menopause is annoying
😂 where do you think I got mine from 😂😂😂
@@akaNoraKnits LOL
Your idea for the skein of yarn for you to knit and give back is delightful! 🧶 💗
I’m glad I’m not the only one only one who thinks so!
