Do you think I should have decreased before starting the hem ribbing? If so, any idea a rate? Please feel free to like this comment 👍 if you think I should go back and decrease and 👎 if you think I’m fine and should continue!

The color is the first thing I saw. I thought it look nice on you.
I think without a decrease in the hem ribbing, you may end up with a less flattering sort of "flare" look. That being said, im a VERY loose knitter so I need those decreses but I also change needle sizes and do all of this to combat my loose knitting. Let us know what you decide to do!

Edit: ok watched it again. Looks like about 6 sts per inch or so, take out 6 sts maybe 8 since it’s 2x2 ribbing s gonna stretch a teeny bit I think and typically you want ribbing to sinch in a bit right??? Even if you don’t want that it’s going to flare out about an inch. Either way decrease at least 6 sts & 8 if you want it sinched in a bit. Hope that makes sense I vote thumbs 👍🏽 ☀️🌴
@akaNoraKnits there were no decreases in my dad's jumper on the hem. The ribbing will naturally sit narrower anyway. I don't think men need a particularly sinched waist band. I guess it depends what you're knitting with though 🤷♀️
IF you've gone down a needle size or two from the main fabric needle you should be okay without decreasing as long as you are wanting the sweater to hang straight.

I so enjoy your podcasts! I love seeing the progress of your projects. If you haven't done so already, just search tubular bindoff 2x2. If Very Pink Knits doesn't have a tutorial, Andrea Mowry does, its Rearranging 2x2 rib stitches for a tubular bind off. I love your idea of just doing it. Just get 'er done! I have been rearranging/clearing out our spare bedroom, a catch-all room, and am finding all kinds of projects anywhere from not started yet to almost finished, needle punch and embroidery kits, cross stitching, you get the pictire. I now have a tall plastic drawer unit filled with those projects. Every Saturday I'll take one project, starting with the top drawer, and work on it until the day is done, or if I finish it ill go to the next drawer. I'm calling it my "I Want to Move It Move It Saturday." Whatever works to motivate us, right?! New year, new attitude!

Hey Nora, you could weigh both the hat and the yarn cake at the same time. It will stay the same weight even if knit up. It's going to be so good!

Great point about inspiration. My Ravelry queue is HUGE and I do keep adding to it, but I've also been searching my own queue for patterns when I get new yarn instead of searching all of Ravelry. I've also noticed that a LOT of the patterns I have in my queue are similar, so that has enabled me to compare and choose which I like best and cull some of the others from my queue.
All my life I've been someone who LOVES to start new things and doesn't follow through and finish most of them. Last year I picked up knitting again after an 8 year hiatus and decided that I would only allow myself one WIP at a time to encourage me to finish. I wouldn't cast a new project on until the previous was off the needles and on the blocking mats. After actually finishing more knits than I ever have before, I've allowed myself to have more than one WIP at a time. I currently have two projects on my needles, one that stays at home with me and one that travels to work so I can knit during my lunch hour. I work from home 2 days a week and am in the office 3, so that gives me time on both. The one I take to work is a pattern I've knit before and I will probably continue to do that - take an easier project to work and keep the newer and more complex patterns at home.
We'll see if I move into a third for when the one at home gets frustrating or if I just pull out the easier project I take to work. :)
I'm trying to work into that as we speak! I can 100% relate to starting something new and not finishing it--my dad and I have this in common and my poor mother will never have a complete thing in her home 😅
I put my yarn to my right and almost directly under my right hand, or forward a little. I'm a thrower (English style), so that positioning works well for my tension - if I'm working on a small project while out & about (socks, hats, etc), I hang the project bag off my right wrist with the yarn in that.
For colour work, I tension in a combo style - CC held continental in my left hand, MC in my right hand my normal way. I put the balls on either side of my body accordingly to help stop things getting tangled.
When I crochet, I tension my yarn continental style so I put the yarn on my left side and a little to the front.
The knitting police made me giggle. Thanks for the knitting fun and companionship!

When the connections on interchangeable needles don't quite line up, I use a tiny strip of plumbers tape on the inside of the connection. That way it should prevent any snagging from the yarn

Hi Nora, I made the same sweater for my son many yrs ago. Great sweater! when I make a gift sweater for someone, I don’t tac in my ends until after I give it. I bring my finishing needles. That way I can either tac in the ends or the item comes home with me so I can frog back and knit some more length or what have you. 😊

Try adding white vinegar when blocking the Musselburg hat to lock in the black. I always use it on my hand dyed yarns to set the color 🙌

@@akaNoraKnits as a dyer, I know that you would be ok, soaking your Musselburgh hat while simmering it in water with a good glug of vinegar or a couple spoons of citric acid, if you have it on hand. Simmering for about 30 minutes, then letting it cool to room temp will set any dye that hasn't bonded well. Another option is either a light soak with Synthrapol or Dawn dishwashing liquid. No swishing or moving around a bunch, just to make sure it doesn't felt. However felting takes more rubbing, swishing & wringing out, than you think unless it's a rustic wool. Both Synthrapol & Dawn have surfaculants in them that the excess dye bonds with and then it's carried away from the yarn when you rinse.
For future projects if you're noticing discrepancies in the yarn between balls you can always try skein alternations (skein swapping) between rounds to get a more even fabric. Usually it's done to reduce colour pooling and excessive variation between hand-dyed skeins, but I imagine it will still work to balance bloom/tension between your young and bouncy cascade 220 and their overworked counter-parts. I don't know if you cake up your cascade 220 or just work it from the skein but you can always cake the balls twice to check it prior to knitting and inform your decision. Hope that makes sense!! The sweater looks great and if the discrepancy is just at the bottom it won't be that noticeable, especially in such a dark yarn.

I've had the same weird yarn experience once. I had 5 hanks of the same yarn same color. I caked up two hanks and started a project. When I caked up and started knitting with the 3rd hank I noticed that the yarn was not as plump or soft as the two hanks I had already knitted up. I ended up deciding to continue the project. My hope is that once I hand wash the finished project the two odd hanks will bloom and soften. The two odd hanks even seem a little crunchy. That might not be the right word, but that was the first eord that came to mind what I touched it. Definitely let us know if the isdue is resolved by washing. My project is more of a long term project so you will probably finish before I do.
I tend to weigh all my yarn before I start a project to make sure the weight matches what the band says, many times skeins/balls can be or are under weight. While I’m working on a project, I keep my working yarn to my left because I hold my yarn in my left hand. When I used to make gifts for others, I’d set a goal of being done by Thanksgiving. I keep my yarn on either a wool Jeanie at home, so on a table or my mini rolling desk. And if I'm out on my lemonwood miniminder which will hang on my wrist or if I'm at work around my desk drawer. Occasionally I use a yarn bowl.
I believe Andrea Mowry has a video on how to rearrange the 2x2 in order to do the Italian bind off…very easy to follow.
Only buy what I am going to use right away. I have a big stash of yarn I bought when I didn’t know about yarn so many single skeins and a lot of acrylic cakes in multi colors (there’s nothing wrong with acrylic but I don’t where a lot of stripes or wild colors) so now I’m trying to only buy yarn for the clothes I will wear. I’m also trying to shop my stash as much as possible. Which means as much as I don’t like wearing shawls and such, I’m crocheting with them more to get them out of my sight! I like the feel of the stitches so as long as it’s not a single row single stitch repeat I should be able to fly through those. But knitting i actually like a single stitch repeat like stockinette or a ribbed sweater. I don’t think colorwork is for me right now, because tension but I’m still trying. Which is the big thing for me, trying it out and not ripping it back out the second I get upset with how it looks.

My go to hat is Smith's hat. It's rib with a little detailing.
Yahoo! Happy Saturday Morning! Oh my gosh! Were you talking directly to me???? This resonates with me so much! My knitting books that I had to have . . .have I knit anything from them . . .no! How many beautiful patterns do I have saved? How many projects do I already have in bags ready? Thank you, thank you, thank you! There was a reason why I bought that knitting book! There was a reason why I saved that pattern! This all makes so much sense to me now as to why at my highest point I had almost 20 projects on the needles!

Whenever I run out of yarn on the Musselburgh hat, I just use up some scrap yarn. No one ever sees the inside of the hat. Thanks for sharing another great episode!

Hello, Sunshine! I’m in MN where it’s dreary and frigid; having a cup of mulled wine and watching your podcast made my day brighter. I think your dad’s sweater looks awesome and I wouldn’t worry about going back and working any decreases at this point, especially if you went down one or two needle sizes before starting the knitting. As far as Italian bind off for 2x2 ribbing goes, I’ve referenced a video from the Knitting with Suzanne Bryant UA-cam channel. She goes over a few different invisible bind offs for that stitch pattern. The Meghan Makes Do UA-cam channel also has an easy to follow tutorial that I’ve used with one of her patterns. Thank you for bringing some light into my day, and for the push to stop collecting inspiration and just make something. 👍 YES! We need to do more of this.

Just a side note about inspiration bombardment. I have been watching a lot of "all my 2023 makes" type videos, but not to be inspired but interestingly enough, to find out what I definitely want to avoid making. LOL I knew before that adding mohair was not on my "must do" list because of allergies, but after seeing how many other people say "it's pokey" I'm not sure if I will add a lot of fuzz to most makes. I do love a good Suri though. But that might have to stay in the sock & mitten makes. I was also happy to hear that I'm not the only one that finds that bubble sleeves aren't practical for them. Mine always end up in the food, in the dish water, knocking stuff over. 🤣 They are also on my "must not make" list. So I too am after some basic wardrobe classics.
So so so true! I have found myself watching for the same exact reason this year! We only have so much time to knit, so we might as well learn what didn’t work out for other people so that we can avoid the same issues!
Hedgehog fibres (especially the dark shades) are known for bleeding. Also you’ll get a pretty significant halo with a single ply because there’s no twist to hold it all together. I think the halo will be nice. It sort of “blooms.”.

This 2023 end season i didnt watch any "what i made this year" videos or "what i want to do this year" i feel like inspiration has flooded my brain but dropping just those videos has let me dig into my own inspiration istead of joining the treads (and test knits 😅 i only have 1 going) I've been exploring highly filtered things on ravelry to start Christmas gift knits 🤣 ...there was a year i started earlier than this and i remember how laid back it was I want that again!
I feel the same!!!! Like I’m all set on inspo-I just want to make things now lol. I also forgot to mention in my 2024 plans that I’m avoiding test knots for the same reason. I have so many things I want to make and just kind of want to do that without interruption. I love that you’re finding a system that works for you!! That is great!!
Rearranging the stitches from a 2x2 to a 1x1 rib for the Italian bind-off is basically working 1x1 cables in a certain pattern (k2p2 -> k1, put 1st on hold in front, p1, k the resting st, p1, repeat) . So you should be fine after your awesome christmas dress!
I knit both english and continental, so I keep my yarn on the side that I'm holding the yarn. I also love using a yarn lazy susan when I have a cake of yarn since I prefer pulling from the outside of a cake vs centre pull.
If you're ever looking for another option for interchangeables, I suggest Hiya Hiya sharps. They are my absolute favorite needles. I used to be a hardcore lace knitter (i.e. silk lace weight yarn, glass beads and intricate pattern) and the tips were perfect for that type of knitting, but I also use them for sweaters, hats, anything. What sold me on them was that the needles swivel on the cable so the tips never come apart. Also, the tips do not have that weird sound that chiagoo has. I personally don't like addi tips because they are too blunt for me and I dislike the join/bump that I always feel I struggle with pushing my stitches over.

Au contraire, Nora, on the yardage. I am using a Regia Premium on a Musselburgh now, and the cake weighed just 92 grams!!! I don´t know if they count the label (which cannot possibly weigh 8 grams) but it was considerably under the 100 grams listed on the label. Not a problem but it does happen .... thank goodness not at all often. And I definitely love knitting with the Regia (merino' and yak combo) as it is lovely.

I think the inspiration paralysis thing is so not an issue for me. What IS an issue, is starting EVERYTHING then finding ive fallen out of love with it a week later. Its rough to be an ADHD knitter lol
The cascade 220 stretchbissue could end up being HUGE or nothing at all. You may be noticing slight differences in yarn texture because you are a new knitter. Everything is new to you so you pay more attention than a more experienced knitter. I will say, you'd never see that with a higher quality yarn.
That zipper looks sooooo nice! Way to go. Look up the zipper sweater by petiteknit for another use for those nice zippers. No info about "rearranging sts" as ive never had to do that before? Do they mean if youre using dpns or magic loop and not small circulars?

The average is a 10% decrease and a change to a needle at least one size, usually two sizes smaller. I have a lot of patterns that required a size 6 needle for the ribbing and a size 8 needles for the body/sleeves.
The yarn ball being on your right is a thing for me too. I can knit with my yarn on either side, but I prefer when it sits to my right because it feeds more smoothly.
I just finished the classic ribbed hat by purl soho (free pattern!) and although I didn't really enjoy all the ribbing, I love the hat! I also love your message- stop saving the inspo and just do it! Hope to make this my mantra for the new year as well! 🥰

Perfect knitting inspiration. I quit facebook and never started Instagram and that got me so much time to actually craft. And thats what really makes me happy. Don't worry about the rearranging of the stitches. It only involves a small cable turn. I think I used Andrea Mowrys tutorial.
Great episode! Thank you. I've been feeling so stuck. As a last resort, I have a print out of my ravelry queue and my ravelry stash, trying to find the perfect pairing. It's helping me see things more clearly. No more searching, just looking at the patterns and yarn I already have!
That’s such a great idea to not get lost in the scroll cycle! It could be fun to shuffle them and pick at random! At the very least, you’d learn if there’s something you really don’t want to make right now! Good luck!!
You can always measure the hat together with the leftover yarn! You will know exactly how much to leave for decreasing.

I like to place my yarn to my right when I'm knitting. That's not always possible -- my dog often squeezes in on my right. Wherever the ball of yarn is I always pull out enough yarn to work across a row and leave it lying on my lap. I find my tension is better if I'm not tugging directly from a ball while I knit.
Your dad's sweater is looking great! I've "favorited" the pattern for future consideration as a knit for my husband. Oops, did that just break the "stop liking and starting doing" rule? Inspiration Paralysis is not too much of a problem for me. Like you have recently committed to doing, I pick my next project when the current one is finished or at least darn close to it. I can't do multiple projects at once or I lose enthusiasm and the unfinished WIPs cause me stress.
I agree just make the things…. Just DO ❤… I read once that we take in more information in a day then people in the early 1900s and before use to in their lifetime…. Balance and slowing down to focus on what is in front of us and what matters to us in knitting and life is key. Your tip at the end is the best kind of inspiration
Wowowoww! It is all too much! We enjoy this slow hobby, yet try to rush right through it. I’m guilty, I want to knit all the things! But I love to romanticize every step of the process and I feel like we could use more of that and less of the scrolling 😅

Hello Nora. Such a fun podcast. I use color catchers when I am worried. That sweater for your dad is stunning. Also your red dress was so fun. A beautiful pattern for gifting, that is very engaging is the recent pillow pattern The Stella Quilt Cushion, from Laura Penrose. If your mom got the needles at Webs they will replace any knitters pride defective needle free. Even the ones in sets. Just give them a call. I’ve had to have a couple replaced due to not tightening on the cord they would just spin and spin. Webs is really great about that.

I actually like my yarn to the LEFT of me on my sofa (i am a continental knitter) I like tossing the yarn in a project bag and mostly close it and pull from it (i do have 2 dogs and a cat and this helps with the pet hair from getting all over the yarn) But the sofa space often has a (a year and 7 month puppy now) and or cat so my yarn (in the bag) will go on the floor on the right side (so it doesn't whack their faces as they sleep next to me)

A tip for the hat: weigh a try-it-on tubing (mine weigh like barely anything but just to be sure), then transfer the hat to the tubing and weigh hat + whatever yarn you have left, and subtract the tubing. Then you’ll know if you have 100g or more 😁 that’s how I do it because I aaaalways forget to weigh before I start 😂 weighing the cable needle by itself could also be a good idea, then you don’t have to transfer it the next time. Hat looks sooo good btw, I need that yarn but I’m in Sweden 😢
Another great visit with you. Your dad will love that sweater. Color and style are perfect. Im knitting a Musselburgh hat now and Im about where you are at. I feel like I might run out of yarn, but will wing it with another skein of pretty sock yarn in the stash. You might like the Sockhead hat. Designer name escapes me but it's a straightforward rim up hat with a wide band of ribbing and then a mile or so of stockinette which scratches that itch. I made the same sweater by Staci for myself a while back and it was so fun to see yours and hear about your decisions with it. I kept the icord edgings and decided to leave off the zipper. It was my first 100% wool sweater and I wanted it to be all about the fiber and didn't want to mess up anything with no sewing skills. I added a few extra inches to the collar instead and it just lays down by itself pretty well since it's wool.
Honestly, that sounds like a great mod! Plus, you could always go back and add a zipper if you were feeling it! I really love the I cord edging and am eager to try that for another time! Overall, awesome pattern!
I knit continental so I tension with my left hand, and I keep my yarn on my left side lower and forward of my hands while working

Regarding cascade 220, wondering if you were starting from the outside or inside of the ball. I wonder if their winding machine had a tension glitch the day your lot was wound. I knit Portuguese style so my yarn goes on which ever side I’m feeling that session. Most of the time on my right because I’m left handed and need my left hand to do stuff with. Also, I am really enjoying the Bankhead hat by Susie Gourlay it’s got just enough to keep my brain engaged. I have the Musselburgh pattern but can’t get past the pinhole but I can do the crochet magic circle and go from there so maybe that’ll be the next to go project.

I am very curious about the Cascade 220 situation that you have as well. My first thought was to check if the skeins came from different lots, that could explain the reason for the difference in the yarn. I have no idea if it will make a difference when blocking so I am very curious to see how that works out for you.
Single ply yarns can tend towards more "halo".
Did you decrease the needle size for the rib? The rule of thumb is go down one size. Knit one round in pattern with the smaller needle before starting the rib.
For an Italian sewn bind off (aka tubular bind off), Andrea Mowry has the best video for rearranging stitches. Then, follow Suzanne Bryan’s video for a jogless sewn bind off in the round. She suggests doing 4 setup rounds but I prefer just 2. BTW, this type of bind off add 3 rows to the length so start a bit before the finished length.

Wow, Nora, you've made so much progress on your dad's jumper. I was like that knitting my dad's in October. I ended up taking a break because I was annoyed that I'd managed to knit the sleeves different lengths. When I picked it back up just before his birthday in December, I flew through the sleeves etc. It was a bottom up which isn't my preference either. His was a broken rib crew neck.
I want to make the one you're knitting. I've had it pinned for years. He loves a part zip.

@akaNoraKnits I was so fed up with it and myself. Learnt an important lesson though, use the same needles on both sleeves. The annoying bamboo dpns made my stitches much looser than on the equally annoying heavy metal dpns.

Hopefully your cascade comes out even, I didn’t notice a big difference in the stretch between skeins when I was using it.
I just did the rearrange stitches this week to do the Italian sewn bind off. Andrea Mowrey has a good tutorial on rearranging stitches. Brooklyn Tweed for the bins off tutorial. I loved how it worked. Look forward to hearing your experience.

I have a short torso and very long legs. My ideal sweet spot are my hips. Just the top to middle of my hip. That ways it gives the illusion of a longer torso. I just wanted to tell you, your Christmas dress was 🔥, girl! Beautiful, posh, and bright. Well done!! 👏 👀 👏

Food for thought..... make a video about what patterns scares the crap out of you? For me, it’s socks. I got the cuff down, and always stop at the heel flap. For some reason I can’t wrap my head around the heel flap. Then it becomes a wip. Anyone else go through this too?

Be careful that yarn may bleed. Wash on its on the first time you wash.
You could also weigh the hat… and then with what’s left and you will know how much yarn total you have….
I put my yarn wherever my cat won’t reach it because he likes to play, chew and sit on it 😊 Also I knit Christmas gifts starting march just because I don’t want the pressure in december. I’ve knitted my dad’s Christmas socks in march and my mom’s in july 😅
I’m the kind of person who just can’t wait to gift something lol. I’d wind up gifting them as soon as they’re done or losing them before Christmas 😅
I did the same thing in my first year of knitting. Gave early gifts (in november) and then felt guilty that I have nothing to give at Christmas. So I spent the first weeks of december knitting like a mad woman socks for everyone so they can be ready on december 25th. I was so mad and frustrated that whole time😀 Really enjoying your podcast. I agree with the topic of «creative overload but no making» that you talked about. I just stop using pinterest for that exact reason: I was feeling pressure to make all the things but I have not unlimited time so that was not really helping me to actually do creative stuff. I only use Ravelry and I have a very short queue and list of favourite. Each time I want to start a new project, I check that list and I choose want I want to make in it and if any stuff just always stay in the pile, then I end up deleting it. Maybe I was not liking this project this much if I never actually cast it on! 😂
