    The only reason I needed help was because I DON'T HAVE A SCREEN TOOL. You had me at 0:49 LOL. I'll keep looking.

    Thanks for watching! We actually found a really good video on Melling's UA-cam channel that explains the engine priming process, its worth watching.
    Go to: MellingEngineParts (UA-cam channel) and the video is
    "How to Prime Engines and Oil Pumps by Melling"

    I'm glad I watched this before I drove back to summit thinking I had wrong screen. I guess ill be driving there anyways for the installation tool and since I've lost my oil pump bolt!

    Ok. this is all well IF the engine is out. I did not remove the engine for the pump replacement. 2 things. One - the weird push-in screen was not going in, so I heated the pump slightly and froze the screen and applied a small amount of wd40. It slid in and now it is very loose. Of course I had to twist it as the angle was not correct. I also did not have an oil screen install tool and used a wise.
    Why is it not threaded or simply bolted ? Thread blocker on it could have helped but since it was so hard to hammer it in due to a lack of real edge (there is a tiny edge but not enough to grab it with a plier) so I think the thread blocker would have not helped.
    So I have to take it to a welder. Great. More wasted time instead of a smart design. Sometimes you wonder what were they thinking ? People quick to say Ford is crap. Well, they bolt their screen so it is super easy to install and no delay and begging a welder to do it.

      This is a GM problem, not a Melling problem... this is a DUMB design. I'm putting my first GM V8 together now for my boat. Can't believe that they don't have a bolt on pick up tube.

    • @forgedsteelwrench9249
      @forgedsteelwrench9249 6 років тому +1

      A bolt to the pick up tube and a steel teflon coated gasket between the oil pump mount and the block would be nice. Most Japan and German cars have this set up. I did a 5.7 gm and i was told by GM tech that sometimes with the vibrating of the engine sometimes they come loose or and eventually the screen just rests on the bottome of oul pan. This is stupid design and is designed to fail.

    Maybe you shouldn't weld the screen to the pump until you've verified that the screen isn't touching the pan.

  • @TorquinDSL

    So, if my 3/8" drill contacts the bottom of the pan the pickup is too close? How do I remove the screen to adjust, since it says not to twist the screen in the oil pump, and by the time I do the drill test I have already welded the screen to the pump, per the video. Seems like all the checks and adjustment should take place before the welding.

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  9 років тому +1

      TorquinDSL ,
      A pre-assembly mock up will have to take place. Measure from the oil pan gasket surface on the engine block to the bottom inside of the oil pan versus that same measurement to the bottom of the oil pump pickup. The difference between the two measurements should be 3/8” greater to the bottom of the oil pan!

    I just purchased a new Summit Racing brand standard oil pump for my 68 chevy 396 engine along with a Melling oil pickup screen P/N 305S. The interference fit is too tight. The hole in the pump measures .734" and the diameter of the tube is .745" a difference of .011", not good. I have been led to believe that Melling makes these oil pumps for Summit Racing under the P/N SUM-122177SV. So where is the problem? Is it with the pump or the pickup screen? What part do I need to return?

    There is an easy way, install pump in motor- loosely fit pickup tube in pump- then fit pan on - it will set correct angle, then take pan off and move screen 1/4 inch higher , mark it with marker and you have correct depth and correct angle

    at first I thougnt "6 thousandths of press fit!!" that's way too much. But then I found this info from Melling on their screen installation tool, apparently it's a metal displacement press fit that only works once:
    "Melling Engine Parts supplies tools for installing press-in type oil pump screen assemblies. The pumpbody should be placed on a small block of wood with the tool straight up and down. Start the screen straight into the hole by twisting and turning by hand before pounding. Under no circumstances should the screen or oil pump be held in a vice. This will lock up the pump by crushing the gear pocket. The tool can be tapped with a hammer until the rolled bead on the collar of the screen tube is flush with the oil pump. This is a metal displacement press fit that only works once."

    You mentioned welding steel pickup tube to cast iron pump body. Bad idea. Not a strong weld. Should braze steel to iron or find another means of mounting the two together.

    Why can't you spin the screen after put to the pump I'm sure that wouldn't matter much

    Just talked to a welder. He said there is no real way to weld a steel to a cast iron. Welder said it will not hold and the weld will end up in a pan. So what now ? I'm not a welder but how do I secure this piece of screen to the pump ? Its loose.

    • @michaelpowers7744
      @michaelpowers7744 6 років тому +1

      You can weld it just gota have the right filler metal when tigging it might also want to preheat the cast first. But say you just wanna use a 7018 stick rod to weld it. And overtime the weld cracks. That weld is going to stick to the steel tube just fine but may break away from the cast. Find you a welder who knows what they are doing and has expirence with cast welding

    Just finished a 355 sbc. top to bottom. My son thought he bought a Melling pump from jegs but jegs sent there own. Can`t get much more then 10 psi at 1500 rpm then idle at 5. Guessing the spring is hung up. This has a stock pan . Can use a 1055 Melling or will it run dry? What pump do you rec? Thanks in advanced. Love the channel

    Bought a new 350 long block for my boat. The new oil pump has a non threaded port to attach the flexible screen tube. My old screen and tube has a threaded fitting. How do you suggest I attach it to the new oil pump with the press fit port? Is there an available adapter? My flexible tube and screen are no longer available.

      You can use a Pioneer 839061 Oil Pump Screen Fastener. This product secures the oil pick-up tube to the oil pump. But, you need to be aware that if the tube just slides out of the oil pump, then the seal may be ineffective enough that the oil pump will suck air into the engine and not oil.

    This was the biggest screw job for me today. I shouldn’t have to tig weld for a stock pump or buy a hundred dollar tool. And goofy here is right about not twisting it, once you do it falls right out.
