If your BMW is making a grinding noise when you accelerate, the culprit is likely the parking brake cable retainer clip. The stock BMW clip is made out of plastic and becomes brittle with age. Over time, the pieces that hold the cables in place will snap off, allowing the cables to hang down and touch the driveshaft. At first, you will only hear it under hard acceleration, but eventually you’ll hear a constant grinding sound as the cables droop down.
Thankfully, a company called AGA tools developed an all aluminum replacement which should last the life of the car. In this video, I’ll show you step by step how to install it! The install is do-able, but requires crawling under your car and working in a frustratingly tight space. If you can do it yourself though, you’ll save a ton of money. On the forums, I’ve read posts of people being quoted as much as $1,300 for this job.

Bruh, that BMW chime got me at the end LOL
🤣
This came out so great babe! I love how thorough you are in your videos and all the little animations you include!
Thank you!
@@justinbuice Imho you hit the jackpot: Nice house, awesome BMW and a hella supportive wife/gf. Really love this channel, good explanations, nice chill background music, easily in my top 3 when it comes to car youtubers.
@@BorisBeer24thank you for the kind words! I feel truly blessed 🙏
That last clip summarized exactly how I feel all the time working on my BMW haha
🤣
“Replace?” I’m 6 months strong with metal zip ties 🤣
Lol, if it works, it works! 😂
Yeah. $129 is a bit much
Favorite BMW youtuber! Always enjoy your videos 👍🤘
I appreciate that!
Justin! Just purchased a 2022 M340i because of your videos. You really sold me on BMW. I am a film maker and will be making some videos on it very soon. Thanks again for such great content. Hopefully my G20 340i doesn't have this parking brake issue!
❤😂👍not the diy frustrations in the end! TY for sharing this video, you are appreciated🙌
My fingertips are still numb 😭
Oh my goodness your timing is perfect I've been trying to figure out what the noise is in my f33 since last fall on it's exactly as you describe can't wait to do this DIY repair thanks for everything you do!!
Glad I could help!! Seems like everyone has to replace this at some point 😅
Nice simple easy to follow diy. Thanks for sharing. That part is really expensive compared to the oe. But, not having to change it over and over is worth it for most.
That’s true. And having installed both the plastic version and this new one, the aluminum is WAY easier to install.
Wow, i have been trying to figure this issue out for about 6 months. Sadly i can't do that repair myself. But at least i can tell the dealer the problem and maybe get it fixed by them.
Thank you for a great video :)
Sure thing! You might be able to find an independent mechanic who will do it cheaper than the dealership too!
Thank you very much my friend. That sound almost drove me crazy in BMW F30 2016. Perfect Video. I love you. From GREECE.
Glad I could help!
My bmw x5 got exactly the same noise and the consol box was vibrating. I couldn’t recognize where the sound came from. Now I can release my stress due to this video. Thanks a lot for what you do.
Glad I could help!
You are the man my dealer charges 900 bucks for that job you saved me that money thanks
Glad I could help!
OMG this just started happening to me about 3 days ago this was spot onnnn! You are the best
Glad I could help!
Good stuff man!
Thank you! 🙏
Good job , continue
Thanks!
Awesome video as always man! I did this job 2 years ago and your other video was very helpful! I even left some of my tips&trick from the experience I had doing it as a comment on the video. But yeah, as you stated in the video, the price leap between the original BMW plastic vs aluminum one is pretty huge. 2 years ago I was looking for a metal version but I could not find anything, and it did not make any sense to pay $100+ on the part itself and another $100 to ship it to Romania. So I went and bought 2 original BMWs. One is on the car and I have a spare one just in case. My 2 cents, if you have the time, space and tools, it`s not worth the aluminum upgrade. The job itself is pretty straightforward. And also, a small tip, the more you launch/kickdown the car, the more frequently you will change the retainer (as per forums)😁 Cheers!
Thanks! The part is way more expensive than it needs to be. Like you said, someone could buy a lifetime supply of the BMW ones for $30 and replace them as needed. I’m surprised that since this was an issue early on, that BMW didn’t revise the part for the LCI’s. Seems like they could have used a single piece of stamped steel. I can’t imagine it would have been that much more expensive considering how small it is. And would have easily lasted the life of the car!
Hey, that’s me! Great video as always, bro. I love the ending 😂
Thanks man!
Thanks got the part ordered!
Nice! Good luck on the install!
What is this part called? As am getting my gearbox out to change the clutch and getting the handbrake cable tightened as well so I be doing this as well but where can I get this part thanks
@@nath7242 parking brake cable retainer clip. I have a link to this exact part in the video description.
Thank you !
Thanks a lot
This is also valid in the F22 M235i, M2 and M240i. I replaced mine with the Aluminum piece. In the M240i removing the exhaust was not required.
Good to know!
Thx❤
Thanksss aas LOT!🎉🎉
Glad I could help!
Yesssssss!
6:20 did I just witness a BMW driver use their turning indicators???? Jokes aside this is a very cool and informative video as usual coming from Justin
😂 thanks!
Pozdrav svima iz Siska. Veliko hvala na trudu vlasniku kanala i naravno sretno u buducem radu 🖖
Great video! will it work with a 2016 428i BMW Gran Coupe?
Yes, should be the exact same part if I’m not mistaken
i’m about to buy a 2016 330i m sport f30, looking at a few sellers and one of the sellers had heaps of issues and on bmw service report one of the things mentioned was a “clip broken on the rear for hand brake cabled above drive shaft” is this the same clip you are replacing shown in video thanks.
Yes, that’s the one
Got F36 430i, and my parking cable retaining clip was broken since I bought it, dealership quoted me to fix it 600$ and I get it why, there is more than just that plate, there is also reinforced braces goes from left to right and they have huge torx that is hard to buy right one. (At least for me, I have no idea what size that torx and its difficult to spend money on the wrong sizes), duno why they made that retaining clip out of plastic due to constant heat exposure but still in progress to fix that issue.
Yahtzee!!! Love it when the UA-cam algorithm can diagnose BMW design flaws and an aftermarket fix. #AI_ML.
It is either the Parking Brake Cable Clip or the Exhaust Actuator Clip making the horrible noise. #Cinematography #BilletAluminum good for +5 Hp
Does it happen to 2017 BMW X5 sDrive35i too? I am worried about it now...
Hey man is this the same on F22 2 series chassis as well? I recently noticed a grinding scraping sound coming from my armrest occasinally. Just hit 145k miles. I'm hoping this is all it is, been hearing lots of werid sounds. I just got my front lower control arms replaced because one of the bushings was leaking and making a clunking noise.
EDIT: I saw the part number for the plastic clip is also F22 so definiting same issue for 2 series. I'll be zip tying it for now but that metal clip is a good idea.
Yes same part, I’m surprised yours lasted that long. I bought my car with 37k miles and the clip was already broken 😅
For what it's worth mine presented as a chirping sound (like a small bird) when I wen't over small road imperfections. It seems that's a lesser known symptom of the same issue
Good to know!
Hey Justin, long time follower...need your help. I saw this video before I started this project earlier in the week along with a few others.
I do need help though, I got everything removed but, for the life of me, I can't get the new clip to go on. Spent a solid 5 hours messing with all this earlier in the evening...
Then I had an epiphany, do I need to not set the e-brake? It seems like I don't have enough space to fit the replacement part in. It seems like it's under tension and there's two different competing forces. Usually whenever I jack up a car I always set the parking brake and the e-brake, but I read something this evening that said when you jack your car from the rear the e-brake is useless anyway, so I wonder if I don't set it if that will release the tension in the cable line and give me some more flexibility for the install. Your thoughts? Did you have your e-brake set? Thanks in advance for all of your help I greatly appreciate it.
Hey, I did not have the e-brake set when I did this. I’m not sure if it will make a difference as far as getting the clip on, but it’s worth a try. You are right that when the rear of the car is jacked up, the parking brake isn’t doing anything anyway, as it only locks the rear wheels on these cars. Try it without the parking brake set and let me know if that works!
@@justinbuice I appreciate the reply Justin! Just woke up and will get to it once it's daylight in TX! I'll report back. Thank you!
@@justinbuice just for clarification, should I disengage the parking AND ebrake, or just the ebrake? Will have the wheels chocked as well with wood.
@@stockgenie2067just the brake handle that’s next to the center console if you have an F30. That’s what those cables connect to inside the car.
Got it all done and buttoned up bro! Yea i had to have the hand brake down in order to get enough play in the cables to fit the AGA part in. Appreciate the guidance and help my man!
Is his diff leaking / weeping? Mine looks similar to that and I have been wondering for a while if mine is? Just looks very wet / oily
That’s Fluid Film that you’re seeing. It’s an oil based product that I sprayed on the underside of my car last fall to protect against rust.
I would say clean yours off with degreaser and see if it comes back. If the diff has ever been services before, it’s possible that they didn’t clean off the excess fluid afterward.
I need to do this I’m just dreading it haha
It really wasn’t too bad. Much easier to install than the stock plastic one
@@justinbuice that makes me happy I’ve seen the kit from FCP they have an aluminum one $200
@@Fallofshane89the one I installed is the exact same part for $130. No idea why FCP has it proceed like that lol
@@justinbuice I’m sure it’s just so they can put some dollars I. Their pocket
My thoughts exactly... They have a great lifetime warranty, but seriously it's a metal part and not worth paying 50% more from at fcp in the unlikely event it were to fail
lit
Ive been experiencing a rattling noise when accelerating with light throttle between 1400 rpm to 1600rpm
If I don’t fix it will it have any side effects
Not really, just annoying.
129 for this part is a ripoff. I had this problem with my f36 435i a couple years ago, hoping it doesn't happen with my f23
$129 is a shame for such hidden functionality. But nobody forces one to get it uh.
Definitely a fun item to have a 3D print file of…
I agree, should be no more than $50 even for all metal
$129 seems crazy. I would just replace with the plastic one and hope it doesn't fail again during my ownership. Maybe $49 tops for that part, otherwise I'm going with a $9 oem.
Just clicked on the video and I'm just going to say PARKING BRAKE TENSIONER CABLE
edit: gg
🤣👌
I just used 2 zip tie to hold them 😂
That’s how my car was when I bought it 😅
Think I did too cause I test drove it for two days and didn’t hear a sound till a week later tryna race my buddy now I been watching BMW DIY’s ever since 😢
Is this a repost?
This is a new video. I did cover this 3 years ago, but upgraded to a better part and went more in-depth on the installation.
are you sure the F30 is safe from this happening?
The F30 is likely to have this problem.
my mechanic zip tied it for under 100
Mine came with them zip tied (used car lot) and they broke after a few months. Another option is to just buy the plastic BMW part for $8 if it ever gives you problems in the future.
I made this video first😢
