Art/Animation by Emily Halaka @emilyhalaka
We’re joined by author Lauren Oyler to discuss her new Harper’s article about her experience going on a cruise centered around Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP brand. We discuss performative crying, serial killer branded work-outs, vagina-themed everything, and selling self-actualization. Then, we catch up on an eventful few days in the media, with Musk’s Twitter checkpocalypse, and Tucker & Don Lemon getting the axe at Fox & CNN respectively.

Get Don Lemon on the pod
Dudes rock
ask him about biting cosby’s penis
For real
chapo deadass always releases their shit in the middle of the night lol
Especially when we are talking about Gwyneth Paltrow
looks like I'm the first gay man in the comments tonight, boys.
it's gay actor Michael Douglas posting under a pseudonym - we are so blessed
Goop journalist named Oyler 💯
I like this guest, she seems like she would be fun to pop bars with
Matt Christman coming in at 46:53 good time held it in pretty well high up in the record but can do better coming off of finkelstein this season 8.5/10
matt is hilariously absent minded on these because he’s scrolling his phone lol
chapo gay house more like... hah, try that on for size fellas
G-g-g-g-got his ass
Damn son, where’d you find this?
You know it's a banger episode when 90% of the comments are complaining about it
it’s fun but dopey, the perfect episode to listen to while i do the dishes.
@@rodrigoroa6753 feminism. Hell yea dude.
@@justcommenting4981 it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it
Is it feminism when you live with your mom?
@@ronmustachio5329 of course, it’s empowering, get on the goop.
No Grills allowed in this comment clubhouse!

I don't know how you can listen to hours of Matt and Felix and still be like "God, this woman's voice is so annoying".
I sound exactly like Felix and I have no idea what you’re talking about
She oscillates between bored, too-cool detached New Yorker and hysterical librarian
Am I fucked up for liking her voice?
@@agristina11 nope also a fan
It's not just the voice, but the content. Read the Harper's piece and you'll see what I mean.
RE: that interview segment with Paltrow. I cannot think of having a life so devoid of interests that would make Gwyneth Paltrow's daily routine of "eating Paleo", "detoxifying" and "an hour of movement" remotely relevant to my existence.
People being pissy with this episode when it has this beautiful gem at 53:00
how is he so wise?
That is beautiful and I missed it because I don’t like girls I guess
shidding and pishing and farding and swedding
I'm gooping out ova heah
I'm gay and gooped and crying now. Thanks Gwxn
i got goop all over my bed sheets
Goop Vibes
I only know Oyler through her (admittedly funny) hatchet-job of that book by Jia Tolentino in the LRB. Apparently her book Fake Accounts got panned because it’s just a roman à clef about her actual life in Berlin lol. I don’t mind her on this ep but I can’t imagine she’ll be invited back. Her Twitter also gives off weird vibes
tfw you could just listen to the first 15 minutes or skip around and decide if you don't wanna listen to it. 726 episodes like fucks sake your not gonna like every single one of them, it ain't that deep people.
“Don lemon has hot guy privilege” is one of the craziest things I’ve ever heard in my life
Certified goop moment.
Look not to be mean to her, but why did you have a guest on to talk about her article about goop cruise while she said at the beginning that her article ended up having not much to say about goop cruise. She was fine, but chapo boys obviously wanted something different, and you could tell Lauren had no idea how to give them that. It sounded like she felt her article was a disappointment to her, like even she was upset about the limited goop info.
Also I can't tell if Felix was doing a bit about yoga being mainstream because of Gwyneth, like she really didn't make it mainstream...
He seemed a bit contradictory like he started by saying she made it more mainstream then later said it was already a thing in the 80s or whatever
I have NO IDEA why CTH would have a guest on to talk about the failures of lazy late-stage capitalism! /s
I mean, the celebrity cruise industry is just a different wrapper on the same old product (easy excursions, middling food in huge quantities and booze for the creaky petite bourgeoisie.)
Oyler clearly observed how little the industry does to deliver on its own marketing, and how its customers are either too elderly or too tired to care. This is absolutely plum for a Marxist takedown. If you're into that sort of thing.
i think she has the right ironic attitude for chapo personally and liked her takes aside from that about brand building. y’all just seem pissy
Love when chapo addresses these pop culture issues just outside of their usual purview
Terrible episode, everyone phoned it in, the show hasn't been good for years, it's over.
See you guys for the next one!
50:50 the moment I realized that "Ron of Japan" is too obscurely Chicago to be a relevant joke
I love hearing stories of people on boats.
Too bad that these cruise ships strip away the lil' bit of culture exchange that regular tourism has left
It's August! I got Rip van Winkled!
All the goop needed to be stored in the hold for ballast at the last minute. Classic problem.
Man, being a woman sucks.
46:53 finally chimes in
Ads will just manifest if you exercise positive branding practice
like Ani DiFranco or Anthony Davis?
#ads
August already?
🤔
Damn
We were making fun of yoga in central PA ( dead-center in the middle of the basket of deplorables), in the 1970s. Madonna wasn't even a thing yet, but yoga was already funny.
Also the Beatles and transcendental meditation in the 1960s
These are the real goop hours....
Will is such a goop
7:05 woof
Chapo comments are the best nothing wrong with the episode but go ahead prove the boys right about being called hogs
This ep. came up in a rotation on Spotify, and I came here to see if anyone else found the guest disinterested and honestly a little self important
hilarious & divine
49:58 💀
Wowwwwww this is really the whole episode isn't it
AUGUST 24th
@@fuzzchan that's just bizarre
This was fantastic, one of the future classics
Felix was that kind of guy…
30 minutes about Gwenyth Paltrow and some product or treatment she's selling? Is this Chapo Trap House?
We're learning all about jade vagina eggs, folks.
I have to admit: Goop Cruise bit the first 6 mins is very interesting.
This stuff was amply covered over ten years ago. But I guess the old fart sexual harassment enthusiasts at Harper’s Magazine have only just heard about it.
She's self aware enough to know how she comes off, but in that self awareness becomes another type of insufferable
Madonna brought yoga back in 1998/99….nice try Gwenyth.
This chick seems cool
Some of y’all ain’t interested in listening to good authors who had a character named Felix in their book
They seem to miss the point of Goop completely. It exists to give people a sense of achievement. The way everything is phrased reflects this; crying and maturation are achievements in the world of Goop
I think Felix touched on this "gamified difficulty"
It’s also a tax dodge. The first years, Paltrow and her partner gave themselves loans out of the company, which then somehow allows them to declare a loss for the year. Recently, Goop was $200K behind on sales tax payments in NY. Things that might have been interesting to talk about re: celebrity grifts on this episode.
Chapo has a female guest, discussing femme coded topic and the comments are reliably full of dudes complaining about it being boring or about the lady's voice.
I don't mind it but Lauren has almost the same voice as Gweneth Paltrow.
What's wild for me is these same people will listen to Liz butcher every word with more than two syllables, but someone does her best impression of Gwyneth Paltrow for every second of the day and that's a big deal

@@justcommenting4981 i actually think that's cute, but if she ever says a word like "acupuncture" I will headbutt my way to China
I think she sounded hot
Wrong type of cruising
I’m 45 minutes in and the most interesting thing said is that the guest thinks young New Yorkers are very sophisticated regarding skin care.
Easily the worst Chapo episode ever.
I miss amber
You just need to volunteer to fight alongside her in the Wagner Group and you can see her again
The muslim Amber Ali?
Chapo went from a poltics and comedy podcast, into the boring niche interests of the hosts with barely any poltics or laughs.
Just wait for the primaries to start
Black Wolf Crew
Autocorrect amirite?
Sorry but her Cruise defeats david Foster Wallace’s Cruise story. Even he couldn’t handle it
He died from a skill issue
Bad job by the boys with this one but that guest needs to be launched into the sun, wtf
I don't want to be too mean, but I'm sorry, this guest can barely speak or communicate what the fuck they are trying to say. And she's a professional journalist? I know public speaking or speaking off the cuff is not everyone's strength, but oh my god the gulf between what I assume are her written skills and hearing her meander endlessly unable to answer basic questions about an event she covered professionally was painful. The gang had to pull teeth to get basic questions answered, and the topic is both dated and largely insignificant to any larger social trends. Genuinely painful, but I appreciate them always trying to at least have fun and salvage what they can.
Nah it was fine. Big overreaction
@@5508Vanderdekken Many such cases in the comments!
Which is it? Did you want her to meander about the larger social trends, or did you want her to stick to only a professional coverage of the “event”? Those are mutually exclusive requests… so what are you really upset about? 🤔
@@ultravioletiris6241 I didn't want meandering, that's what I heard. It's just my opinion on the episode. I learned nothing new about Paltrow or Goop from her statements. I also got zero rational explanation about these health guru trends/fads. It is some of the messiest commentary I've ever heard. I subjectively did not enjoy her presentation. Does that clarify things?
Sub par most guests on Chapo
something about this woman’s voice made me angry and simultaneously want to be scolded by my teacher.
A bit of a neera tanden quality.
Yuck!
I see the Chapo requirements for women contributors are still: (1) be a non-threatening airhead; (2) you’re letting one of them touch you; (3) or your name is Naomi Klein.
Since it's definitively not option 2 or 3, it's great to see today's feminists call female journalists they don't agree with "airheads." Have you ever done anything worthwhile? Got a google scholar page or SCOPUS profile to share of your intellectual contributions?
@@feydrautha012 Lol i would hope that contributions to society can be measured in more tangible ways than a freakin GooGoo scholar page. Oof 😂 . Nice way to flip intellectual gatekeeping right around to more intellectual gatekeeping.
“No she not dumb, you dumb!”
Genius.
@George Gordon Descending: If there’s one thing the Chapo community stands for after a decade of op-ed reading, it’s credentialism respecting. Also I wish any of those achievements had come through as she repeatedly lost confidence mid-sentence in trying to describe a cruise she went on and the article she wrote about it to intimidating luminaries Will and Felix.
shes seems to have a hard time deciding what she wants to say and sometimes she loses confidence or something in the middle of the sentence and ends up not making any sense
yeah but she’s funny tho so idc
i couldnt stand the guest
So boring
You've posted this exact comment every time Chapo has had a woman on
@@TTV5 not true
@@SavagesInMyTown Yes it is. Your comment is right there, and this is the one time Chapo has had a woman on
Bored and boring guest. Might as well have just gone to the beach like she went on a cruise.
Worst guest chapo yet - northeastern vapidity that can usually only be had around the Passover table come the holidays.
There are some cringe dudes in the comments who seem to be seething at the fact a femoid is on their special boy podcast.
What did you think of the content?
