  • Winter in Georgia! Rarely, but not unheard of, it may even snow here. That's what happened last night and possibly brought CSX Q616-22 in the hilly section between Carlton GA and Elberton GA into trouble. Q616 is a northbound manifest. It blocked the main track and empty coal hopper train E148-22 (with mid-DPU) got stuck in the nearest siding to the north, Norman in Elberton. Decision was made that the two engines of E148 go out and pull Q616 out of its misery. Watch their story, which in real time took 3 hours. [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. Superb capture of the Empty Coal Train, and the stalled Mixed Freight train, with 5 locomotives, that was a surprise gift. :o)

      Thank you! The 5-engine lash-up was indeed a very rare catch, as it existed in this composition only for 3 miles or so :)

    Hi mbmars01, great video, thank you for taking the time and effort to share this "incident" with the railfan community, it helps modellers trying to emulate prototype conditions, Ciao, L

      Hi Mbmars01, thank you for the tip, I am subscribing to your channel this very minute. I appreciate your videos, especially that you take the time to write the "behind the scene" story to these railroad incidents; it really helps obsessive-compulsive railroad modelers (like yours truly) to replicate "real-life" conditions. Have a nice weekend, Ciao, L

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 років тому +2

      lancelot1953 Thank you! I'm glad you like it this way. Yeah, it's fun to simulate rail operations. I particularly like yard jobs, could watch them switching cars forever. I'm certainly not one of the "obsessive" modelers. Eventually, a model is a model and as much as one wants to make it as realistic as possible, it is still a model in the end. Not everything can be "to scale," but I like if one can achieve a certain level of perfection at last.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  8 років тому +2

      OldSchool1500
      Well, they have, but there is no yard near Elberton. Just today the same thing happened in Athens GA, where they actually have a small local engine. As expected it was not able to push the stalled train and they had to use power of a different train to pull the train over the hill. If no other train is around, they have to tie done on the main track and wait for another train to come and help.

    I know the perspective is compressed by the telephoto lens but that is one tricky piece of ROW. Very undulating easy to stall as well as pull the train apart trying to balance the short relatively steep grades. If it had snowed in Georgia those good old boys probably had no sand and weren't used to running on the slick rail under undulating conditions. They were set up by the Mechomical Dept !

    Interesting, lots of very close shots of engines. Middle engine of stalled train was smoking too much, maybe not running right. I see too much of CSX that tells me maybe they try to skimp on things like track repair, dirty engines, smoking engines to try and save money. UNP, BNSF rarely has dirty engines. Thanks for sharing.

    Why horn repeated at 8:00?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 років тому +3

      Since there is a train in emergency in the same block, these engines have speed restrictions. I don't know the rule by heart, but they were certainly not permitted to go faster than 10mph.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 7 років тому +2

      mbmars01 Thank you. I do not understand why they must move so slowly unless it is the possibility of being surprised with a train around the bend and unable to stop before hitting it.

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  7 років тому +6

      Well, it's a general rule which certainly has been implemented because, indeed, whenever there's a train in emergency you never know what to expect happening next. In this case it might look overcautious, but safety comes first.

    why was 820/217 going so slow to make the hook up? How many of the five power unit that was hooked to Q616 was working after the hook up? will 820/217 try and make up the lost time or will it just travel at it assigned speed and be late? I didn't realize 802/217 was the lead power units for another train when they helped the stalled train. thanks for a very good video.

      If a train is in emergency, train or power movements in the same block are bound to speed restrictions. I don't remember the details anymore.

    • @jamesshanks2614
      @jamesshanks2614 7 років тому +5

      When a train stalls and other power is ordered in to assist he has presuming this is centralized traffic control a restricted signal leaving the passing siding he was sitting in. A restricted signal allows you to proceed ready to stop in one half the distance you can see looking out for anything that could be wrong not exceeding 15 mph. Now if the stalled train is 8 miles away that's roughly 35-40 minutes just to arrive at the train. I've done this many times in my career as an engineer and it's not something you rush. Now once he's tied onto the stalled train and gotten under way he still can't exceed restricted speed until he passes a signal showing a better signal indication then and only then can he proceed faster than 15 mph.

    Fun seeing snow there! Why did engines not push? Cause of stall? Dummies place the horns on the engine where sound will be obstructed by thengine. Brilliant.

    That’s my home town, Elberton GA. I am going to be a license ham operator. What radio frequency is this?

    • @mbmars01
      @mbmars01  4 роки тому

      Cool. The frequencies are 160.290 MHz for the dispatcher channel and 161.100 MHz for the road channel. An ordinary scanner that covers the range 160-161 MHz assigned to railroads is sufficient. One doesn't need to be a HAM operator for this, as no-one other than railroad personnel is permitted to talk on these channels anyways.

    The Americans love their horns. Trains are run perfectly safely everywhere else in the world with out this obsession. Yet for some strange reason in America they need to blow their horns every 30 seconds.

      With how many horns we sound, there's no way anyone nearby will treat it as background noise. Several tons of moving steel is not something to be lightly dismissed, especially if you're nearby.

    • @robertheinkel6225

      They have to sound the horns prior to any grade crossing to warn cars. But cars still get hit on a regular basis, because they ignore the train.

    • @SpencerHHO
      @SpencerHHO 4 роки тому

      I live in front of a rail line used for electrified metropolitan passenger trains and diesel freight trains. They blow their horns almost as much as this, they blow it as they pass a crossing or station. Interestingly the freight trains don't seem to blow at night even though they run at night.
