[1c] New CSX Tier 4 Units and Why the Police Stopped Q194, Carlton - Athens GA, 11/15/2015 ©mbmars01

- This video features the mixed freight train CSX Q614-14 and it tells the strange story of the intermodal CSX Q194-15. Q194 was stopped by the police at Howie Siding, because there was an incident with people involved, who were near the track when the train passed. As far as I can tell, nothing seriously happened, but Q194 got substantially delayed. Both engines of Q194 were brand new tier 4 GEVO ET44AH engines (CSXT # 3302 leading, # 3280 trailing). The horn of 3302 is really unique. [© 2015 MBMARS Productions. Exclusive rights for UA-cam channel "mbmars01" only.]
This is the essence of railfanning; spending the day chasing & not knowing what to expect. It was almost as if I was behind the camera. You had me rolling about the " Tommorrow moves" comment. I spend countless nights chasing CSX & FEC at night only not to film because of lighting. I was fascinated by the steep hills, something that we dont have.
Keep up the great work. The video editing is on point.
Many thanks. You really got the point. Often I know what to expect, but it is more exciting not to know. However, this can also be frustrating at times if one doesn't find a train for hours. I haven't yet railfanned in FL, but I've been there many times. I like it. Flat ground can be very nice for long shots. I agree, railfanning at night is awesome, mainly because one isn't bothered that much by other cars drivers. However, if I go out, I always want to bring something home - meaning video material - but that is apparently not easy at night. Thanks again and keep watching!
Oops! They forgot the caboose! (After all this time I still find freights with no caboose looking incomplete.)
So do I. The EOT devices will just never have the same personality, ya know?
Butt,,,, it's gone forever.
O
Cabooses have not been required for 50 years or more rail companies were quick to get rid of excess personnel and equipment
It's incredible to see almost 10,000 HP and nothing but clean heatwaves and exhaust fumes, even with telephoto lenses! That's really tough to do with diesel - I give them credit even if it's probably sucking down more fuel and cutting engine life in half with all the EGR crap.
+Alex Thomas The engines were pretty new back then. That added to their shiny appearance.
Alex Thomas yeah give them a year and they’ll start smoking like a giant bonfire.
It's not even close to 10,000
It's only 4,400
@@jasonwhipp5721 Lol true
That was nice of the engineer to wave back - RR workers and employees are real supportive and talkative to railfans - it is helps the hobby and makes America a little bit better place to be, Thank you for the video and comments, Ciao, L
They are all human beings. You'll find funny ones, helpful ones, friendly ones, and sometimes grumpy ones :) - I'm happy you like the videos.
Restart was nothing like hearing four SD40's winding up. 'Course after years of hearing things like that my hearing isn't that great anymore!
As a phone installer, I worked at a couple of engineers homes and every one I met had two hearing aids. One for each side. There's a price to be paid for exposure to all that noise for a lifetime.
@@bobbysolo5411 oh 100% my dad's been working for the railroad about 19 years and he keeps yelling HUH every time we talk to him 😂
if the police tried to stop a moving train by pulling in front of them with their lights flashing the way they usually do, they'd get a bit of a surprise ...
BAMM!!!
+xxMineVSCraftxx Gaming & Railfanning Ramming an officer, reckless driving, assault with a deadly weapon, felony evasion, and possible officer homicide.
All in a day's work.

AndreiTupolev the train crew are only allowed to throw the train in emergency after they hit someone not before, regardless
Faisal Ismail depends. If someone is in the car and they know they gonna hit it they'll throw emergency
At 6:30, that looks like a real tough train to manage. That is like running a roller coaster. Great engineer.
Greatly exaggerated. The photog is zoomed in with a fairly long lens. A little later, around 7:30-7:50, he zooms out and you get a more realistic look at the track profile.
I love how the reflection of the ditch lights makes it look like the rails are on fire in your head-on shots, like at 9:35!
Wonderful video. Your technique is great, and the image clarity, especially when paused, is really impressive.
Nice! Thank you very much. Glad you like it.
Love the smell of Diesel almost any time of the day. Great video. Thanks
Thank you!
Same here
Beautiful machines with unbelievable torque. Thanks for sharing
+Dan Shelley (Northeast Central) I agree. Powerful and shiny.
Right there's why JB always takes so long to get anywhere, half of ems going in reverse.
Awesome video and thanks for the story going with it.
I like the engineer waving at you at 25:40 :-)
He made a really smooth start.
Thank you. Nice, happy you liked it. Yeah, crews are typically very friendly out here.
Just Saying , best train chasing vid I have seen, one great Job here! HATS OFF TO YOU!
Cool. Thank you!
I agree. It is also a story.
It's amazing how the hills are so pronounced passing the feed mill!
Don't think they had enough power on the train working the mill though!
It looks more dramatic in these long shots, but the grades are difficult to handle for some trains.
Congratulations on video. Beautiful images of these amazing crazy series 44 GE. Here in Brazil we have many AC 44i and Dash 9 operating in MRS Logística. Locos are fantastic.
Thank you. Muito obrigado! I wish, Brazil would operate more railroads! I've been there many times and think that the economy could benefit a lot from railroads. It's a beautiful country, though. I enjoyed all my visits.
Exactly. We have had many railways. But unfortunately in the late 50s, the JK government, has created a wrong modernization project. They felt that the future was the highway. They created the RFFSA notorious and have embraced all railroads that mostly were scrapped after decades and decades under British control mainly. Since then, what we saw was the dismantling of our rail park and the end of passenger trains. Today, amargamos this chaos. Our production has to follow mostly by road and the cost is too high. Not to mention the loss on the roads. With the end of RFFSA the FHC government, Brazil is beginning to regain its rail park, which will take many years, but at least there is the will. With privatizção RFFSA, our lines are being modernized and new locomotives and wagons are being introduced gradually. An example is the MRS Logística, the company I work as a designer designer and has made incredible investments. Recently a AC44i fleet was built to transport iron ore from Minas Gerais and the ore export ports, and transport laminates, container, grain, etc. New lines of subways, VLT and others will have the few investments that need and hopefully that Brazil again have their lines as before. Unfortunately, Lula and Dilma governments have been the bane of our country. Fortunately this time is passing. Hugs and once again congratulations on your beautiful pictures. Only one thing caught my attention: as there is buckling lines. It would be the changes in the weather?
Aloizio Barros
I'm glad to hear that there are investments into the railroad system. I have seen the light-rail project in Cuiaba, but after the soccer world cup was over, money was cut and progress became very slow. Unfortunately, that's how it is often in Brazil. Great ideas, knowledgeable people, ambitious projects, but then it's rarely brought to an end. The landscape here is somewhat unique and the railroad just followed the natural design.
nice train chasing! good shots!
+BaltimoreAndOhioRR Many thanks!!
@@mbmars01 nice video!
They do have a nice idling sound though ... and the good 'ol GE loco air compressor sound! :P

this video is awesome!..thank you for making my day...long time ago a steam engine used to come just below our house...how times have changed!..

+BNSFguy 617 Thanks! Yeah, they posed quite conveniently just for this shooting (I'm kidding, of course)!
+mbmars01 cool horn I love that sound 😁
If there was a rider or riders on the train they probably jumped off the minute the train slowed down enough to and took off
Wouldn want to pay that fine either
Thanks! Amazing how the camera zoom makes the track look like a roller coaster. At 6:32 ti almost looks like a model railroad for some reason. Gee, I didn't think hobos rode the trains any more. The new Tier 4 engines really seem to be clean- and quiet, too.
You're welcome.
I was wondering about that. Was the use of the zoom exaggerating the way the grade of the track appeared to be very steep? You confirmed my suspicions...
great video. i notice that when you were following along with the train you were going through a road repair site that had 35 mph signs.
Haha, seriously there is a 35mph speed limit? Thanks for reminding me. Just kidding, I'm not stressing speed limits; there are too many cops out there. Glad you liked the video!
that line is one hell of a roller coaster. Major props for the engineer keeping that train under control with all those grades.
The foreshortening makes it look a little bit more dramatic, but the grades are not to fool with. Some trains struggle and occasionally stall.
The train brakes quickly!! But the air locomotive tank,,,sure was empty!!A compressor restores the pressure quickly,,,air for all the wagons!!
Thanks for the great video. The hills the rail line is built on blow me away. I live in Canada and have never seen such a hilly rail line. Ours are flat overall with gentle grades.
+Newmachinist Thanks! The grades look certainly steeper than they are because of the loss of perspective in these long shots. Yet, many trains struggle and sometimes stall.
Ah, a fellow Canadian.
Don't let boo birds get you down. Great vid - and love the back story! Dipsy-doodles thru the long lens really cool!
+AZTrainGranny Haha, thank you and don't worry. I'm very happy that so many people like to watch these vids, but even if nobody would, I'd do it just for myself. I simply enjoy railfanning and if I can share it with others, it's even better.
good footage of the flexing track and sleeper near the end. Your powers of observation are excellent!
Nice, thank you.

Out little local Y111 in Athens GA, which I actually too rarely feature, has always a caboose attached. There are a few videos on my channel where it can be seen, though.
my my what some awesome shots you got their, nice work
Thank you!
Thanx for the video. These Tier 4 locos sure are clean on starting. Not a bit of smoke..
You're welcome!
Awesome video, camera like a Hollywood professional :) Those T4 are good for the environment but I kind of miss the old engine sound. Actually they quite sound like a pure electric locomotive. But that would have twice the horsepower @ wheel
+OldSchool1500 Thanks! You're are right, but I kinda like these new engines.
What a great shot of q614 approaching including signals . Too bad we couldn't watch him knocking down his green . Even allowing for distance distortion , I'll bet that engineer knocked a few knuckles on that little roller coaster ride . Like your style of panning rather than making us watch every darn car from a fixed position as some others do . Another good video . Keep up the excellent work .
This is a video I like very much, because it was on of the first captures of the back-then new ET44s. Great you enjoyed it, too!
The people next to the track didn't happen to be holding a camera did they? :-)
Leon Kernan nn
On the radio at 19:53 he says, "Apparently they called back, it's not a guy laying on the track, it's a guy riding or laying, I guess, on one of the flat cars."
I agree with this many people don't realize how inherently dangerous railroading is despite the many safety devices the railroads employ which did not exist years ago. Despite this on occasion trains can derail, engines can fail spewing broken parts into the air, parts can go flying off cars, and there are probably a number of other things I have overlooked which can cause injury for people who get too close to the tracks (even in some public places close to railroad property).
murray1575 objects on the rails become projectiles
@@1575murray, don't forget "steel bands" or "large heavy straps" that can be loose, waving in the air at up to 60 MPH. Get hit with one of those and it could easily kill you. No doubt.
Your this effort is very appreciable for introducing of this different of railway zone. Thankyou for giving this different video
Thanks very much! Great you like the style.
the up and down grades at 5 minutes on this mainline are crazy!! It looks like an off road motorcycle course. I noticed that the 3211was followed by an EMD SD. Really like the EMD stuff. I wish the EPA would get off their case and let them continue to build the world's best locomotives. I am from a railroad family, and know a lot of engineers, management and AGYM's from BNSF, AMTRAK and other railroads. The typical opinion stated by the above is that the GE locos are a lot "cheaper". (their exact words, not mine) Apparently EMD still has the best, most efficient, and most advance, patented technology. I think Progress will eventually regain the realm of leading locomotive manufacturer again. Especially if they get the 710 where it needs to be in tier 4 regulations. I guess from what i am also told is that there is a very long waiting list for EMD locos, as that GE's are a lot easier to get for motive power now.
there is a long waiting list for EMD ACE's. I think the 710 may be done as of this year though? i could be wrong, but thought everything in the very near future will all be catipillar 4-stroke.
+3RTracing I personally cannot really judge it. A Norfolk Southern engineer I talked to recently favors operating GEs. It's probably more an individual taste and less a general trend.
In my over 30 year career with CP I have operated both, and in my opinion, GE's are, to put it quite simply, JUNK! End of discussion!

Wow excellent video my friend. Thanks for your sharing excellent video buddy. Have a good day to you. Watching here from Vietnam 🌷🌷🌷❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏
Thanks! Hope you have a good day, too. Awesome, greetings to Vietnam!
I will always be amazed at such mass balanced on such narrow tracks!
bigmac it's not that narrow...4ft 8 1/2 feet
Quote, " such narrow tracks". W.T.F. ???? You do realise the tracks are 4 feet plus apart right, imagine if they were 3 ft 6 inches like they are in many countries. How about 2 feet wide in North Queensland, Australia for the sugar cane trains. Once upon a time we had 5 foot plus in a couple of states, but that was done away with when folks realised a standard size would benefit everybody. Amazing, after a hundred years of having mixed gauges between states, they finally realised the economic benefits of standardisation.
itchyvet oof
@@itchyvet You do realize the US had it's share of narrow gauge lines right? The Rio Grande had a 3ft line that is now fragmented into several tourist lines and the Maine 2 footers.
Yes, I was aware there were/are narrow gauge lines in the U.S. Though how many are still economicaly functional remains in question.
whenever you zoom in really close it sometimes looks like there are massive steep hills that the train has to climb
Well, the long shots make it look more impressive. However, the grades are substantial and the trains literally have to climb them. Not all manage to do it successfully, though.
true. its just kinda funny how big the hills look, even though its kinda an illusion
It seems that CSX shows some TLC to there engines more than UP!
Great video, liked the close in shots, great for obtaining detail information!
Awesome, thanks!
It was probably Stobe & Wingman evading the bull !
Love the way the camera lens causes the tracks to look like a roller coaster.
Same here!!
Hobos have scanners. They even have YT channels. And they look out for railfans. Unreal. If they were spotted they got off and ran away.
Sorry, but having grown up with a family of railroad workers, I grew up around and with trains. It IS our duty to report ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY on ANY TRAIN that we may see.
Dadburn right I'll call in someone riding on a train, it's trespassing and illegal to be doing so if you aren't an active worker on that train! And I also will try and get a clear shot of the offender and turn their photo and/or copy of the video over to the railroad so they can catch the offender.
Today's trains do not have the old railing system underneath the rolling stock like they did many years ago. So it is extremely dangerous to be hopping a train today and staying on. You could end up saving that persons' life that has no business there.
Sorry, but it is OUR CIVIC DUTY as railfans to report things out of the ordinary on any train that we may come across and see, including anything on a train that could be a disaster waiting to happen.

+Noah S. Hey, like it or not, it still gets down the track quite effectively.
***** yup
+Noah S. I have to agree, they are not the old GE's that I have come to love. They sound to me a match between an EMD/CAT and a GE. you can still here the GE GEVO but the exhaust of an EMD almost.
Love to see all those JB Hunt containers on the train. I drove for JB Hunt for 12 years and pulled hundreds of them. I come from a railroad family - my great grandfather, grandfather and several uncles worked for Erie Lackawana way back when. Funny how I ended up doing the same job my grandfather did - picking up freight at the rail yard and delivering it.
Cool, thanks for sharing your story!
We used to move a lot of JB Hunt trailers back in the 70s when it was still only TOFC piggybacks, and we had piggyback loading and unloading by those 2 axle tractors that would back up onto the cars to load and unload the trailers at both the east and west ramps.
nice one mbmars, love that fresh CSX paint.

One thing I haven't seen a comment on, I've read through tons and I want to know, is there some kind of NO HORN law in the state where this was filmed at? I noticed after they finally got permission to go and clear the signal, the 3302 never blew their horn when approaching any of the highway crossings, prior to their stopping they did, so why did they not blow for the crossings once they got restarted again? or didn't any even notice that?
BTW: I think that this is the downright STUPIDEST, DUMBEST, BRAIN-DEAD IDEA that some idiots came up with, stopping trains from blowing horns and ringing bells at highway crossings, I remember when one of the railroads I used to live next too stopped that from 10pm until 7am in the 1980's, and you know what, train accidents {train collisions} with cars, pedestrians and bicyclists actually more than DOUBLED when this idiotic rule was shoved in place. More fools DROVE or WALKED around the downed gates, any that may have survived to tell the tale all laid it up to, and I quote "I NEVER HEARD THE TRAIN COMING", yet the crossing lights and gates were working, then there were those where the crossing signal and gates MALFUNCTIONED, NO HORN or BELL as the train approaches the crossing to most people = NO TRAIN, again, if the HORN and BELL on the LOCO had sounded, some of these folks could possibly still be alive today!
I don't care what the idiots say that BUY or RENT a home next to a railroad track says, I say: "BLOW THE HORNS AND RING THE BELLS!!!!!" These brain-dead morons SAW the RR tracks when they bought or rented that home, the RR was there LONG BEFORE those homes or apartments in 99% of these cases. So don't blame the RR or the trains, BLAME THE REAL CULPRIT in this, the idiot that wasn't bright enough to figure out RAILROAD TRACKS means TRAINS AT ANY TIME OF DAY or NIGHT!
If I did not want to be disturbed by trains rolling through all day and all night, or hearing bells, horns or the rattle of rolling stock, I CERTAINLY WOULD NOT BUY or RENT a HOME NEXT TO A RAILROAD TRACK!
Yes, they regrettably made the crossings in Carlton, GA silent. I fully agree with you! American railroads without horn shows at crossings are simply unimaginable and more dangerous.
BTW: Have subscribed and have notifications turned on. I enjoy watching train videos like these. Especially since I can't get out and do it any longer, as much as I'd like too.
Cool, thanks. There are already 380+ videos like this on my channel, conveniently sorted into playlists (just visit the channel main page). This can keep you busy for a while :)
There are many, many, "QZ" or "quiet zone" xings throughout America. Generally the busier ones use barriers of some sort to keep drivers from going around the gates. Some even have "pole mounted horns" that direct audio directly at the xings when the gates go down as trains approach. These are a great idea as they limit the "noise pollution" in all directions and put the sound where it's needed.
Agree with you totally on this one. I don't know about the U.S. but in my country it is requirement under Transport Department to blow horns approaching crossings, END OF STORY ! However, common sense would dictate that blowing said horn at 0200 hrs near homes requires a little tact. You are required to blow the horn, but there is no requirement stating how long it is to be blown, so a couple of quick short blasts should do the job. Always worked for us.
Nice catches, and weird indeed on Q194. LOL at Sims too, by the way. Liked the blimp as well.

kim hafslag that’s why it was going so slow...
Did anyone else notice the train bouncing over the low spot in the rail at 12:08? Isn't that a derailment hazard? Looks like it was recently welded there. I don't think that piece of track will hold up long taking that kind of pounding.
Yeah that certainly didn’t look good. The rest of the tracks also looked like they could do with a tickle-up!
12:11 did you spot the bad rail?
Where cars where bobbing up and down, yeah.
In 1974 me and a buddy hopped a train in Sacramento going to Reno Nevada and it never stopped in Reno, it continued to Montana before we were at a place we could get off and be in civilization.
That's funny.
super video!!!
+BNforever2009 Many thanks!
I am amazed at the incline these train are going up. Here in NY state they don't have noticeable inclines. Great video!
It looks a bit exaggerated in the videos. Nonetheless, these grades are substantial and many trains fail to climb them. When the original tracks were laid in the mid-19th century, nobody cared here in the south about grading due to lack of need and resources. Where track was replaced and repaired over the decades (a conductor I talked to called it a patchwork line), it would require an entire new construction to reduce the inclines. That's just too expensive. CSX keeps it as it is and experiments with DPUs to reduce the frequent knuckle breaking.
Nice looking units but these modern horns sound terrible. I miss hearing the sweet sounding K5LA's and the mellow Leslie RS5T horns.
+ACLTony Haha, that's too much nostalgia. We must look forward to the future and appreciate technological progress lol.
Joking around right?

so the freight trains with 2 or 3 or more tiered engines work in unison? if so how? I don't know much about trains
Tier 4 refers to the current epa emission regulations for diesel engines, As for engines working together yes more engines pull more weight better in hilly terrain
Yes, they're linked up by "multiple unit cables" and controlled by one engineer up front.
At 6:00, what kind of grades are they pulling?
im rapidly coming to conclude that Anthony Smith is a troll.
R.I.P CSX
Love how the lens distortion makes the grade look super wacky like a rollercoaster
Yeah, I know. But it doens't only look like a rollercoaster in the video. Its really somewhat hilly in that area and they built the line without much grading.
Love to stand by and feel the awesome energy given off by train engines 66 years I still feel the same I also use to know the time of nitewhen the2 am rumbled by shaking the shale bed formations under the earth half mile from the tracks in my bedroom I always smiled as it’s vibrating soothed this young okie back to restful sleep
it's cool that there environmentally friendly. But I miss the diesel smoke when starting off.
live in north east montana...lotta long oil trains.
seen 3 es44s puff out the smoke.....dude looked late. highway follows the railroad, he didnt waste any time.
All solar powered... [sarc] Could mount wind turbines on top. Faster the train runs, more power is generated [sarc] :>)
Something Unpronounceable Maybe No one gives a fuck...this is UA-cam not the national spelling bee. Clearly you knew what this person was saying so they did something right.
hubbard665 I know what you mean. That's why I love steam train vids.
Are you for real ???? Diesel loco's, no matter how new or old, will ALL puff out black unburnt smoke, when first moving off. This unburnt diesel will eventually be burnt off when the engine reaches it's designed operating temperature. If they continue to smoke then, or under a full load, they are stuffed and ready for the scarp heap. All out locos were never shut down, (unless required for servicing) for this very reason. If shut down, the constant expansion when operating then cooling down when shut down, posed extreme stresses on the components, it was discovered to be cheaper to have the engine running continuosly maintaining some sort of equilibrium temperature to extend service life.
What’s pretty amazing is you do not get pulled over and investigated for following trains. Not saying you’re doing anything wrong. Everyone needs a hobby. Just that in this day and age people get nervous fairly easy.
Lol, there's nothing wrong with it indeed, but you're right. At some locations some people get nervous and call in the police. It happens all the time - one gets used to it. Typically the cops are quite relaxed once they realize that one simply watches and films trains. On one occasion, when it was still dark before dawn, a cop even turned on all his interceptor's lights for me to get a better shot of a train. This was extremely nice. I never complain; they just do their job and I respect it. On my "home line", where people know me, I never had any troubles.
Haha!
You made fun of CSX' spelling of "Simms" which could be right. Right after that, you misspelled "switching."
:P
Nice video, though. Just teasing.
Lol, thank you. One must be careful in this world... :)
I lived on A1A Route 1 between 2 RR crossings for 15 yrs. in S.Florida. The Trains would often stop dead on the tracks just to wait for an oncoming one to get to a side track so the looong freight Trains could continue on. 100 plus cars......... Richard S.
does the Conductor make the radio calls to dispatch,or does the Engineer?
+Kevin Pippin Typically the conductor.
Both. Just depends on the crew and what they're doing. Lots of engineer's like "to run the show" and always talk to DP. But it generally is the conductor's job.
I wonder when GE hybrid locomotives will actually be produced.. to recoup the energy lost as heat when braking, and for extra power on demand.
Well, we'll see where rail technology is gonna take us to in the future. Will be interesting to watch the development.

When trains (Engines) are parked up in their yard/s they are eerily quiet but serene, Oh boy but when these Baby's are FIRED-UP & Warmed, they are like Eager Mechanical Beasts ready to Haul Ass to where-ever it maybe, Trains are perhaps the MOST POWERFUL Of all LAND Machinery, and can be a Sight to Behold to All who See them, They are Truly Magnificent and are the Back bone of our Goods/products being transported all across our Countries, with-out them we would probably have to wait weeks for our retail shops/stores/ & Supermarkets to be stocked, Thanks for the View and Awesome Camera Work (NZ Railways Freights & Services - Logistics - Government Owned - Goods Shed Checker - Shunter - Gov Certified Fork Hoist Operations 1975-77)
You're right! It's a cool experience to hear and watch them start up. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
That's funny. Tomorrow moves but not today lol
That's what one of my friends told me too I laughed when he said it.
I think you can hear what it is really about listening to the 2 guys talk, starting around 19:50 --- Speaker #1 at about 19:50, "... apparently they called back, it's not a guy laying on the track, it's a guy riding on or I guess laying on one of freight cars in your train. They didn't say where he is on your train". Speaker #2 at about 20:05 oh, so we got one riding with us". Speaker #1 at about 20:09 "Yeah, yeah, apparently you got a rider riding with you, I guess somewhere in the middle...."
So it appears to be someone hitching a ride on the train.
That's about the correct story line. When filming, I cannot closely follow the radio chatter and at that time I didn't precisely know what happened until much later.
That engineer is the best driver J. B. Hunt has.
Nice shot's of train.keep up the gd work.take care

Ever notice that the harder you try to please some folks, the more they complain?
You get a president to lower the diesel prices and guarantee everything gets cheeper in this country
Very familiar with this startup. I used to drive train crews to wherever their train was for a crew switch. Was fun.
Very cool! I can imagine you've seen and heard many trains starting up after crew changes.
Some of the rail cars appear to have skirting-- an attempt to reduce aerodynamic drag?
Not really.. Those are the structural walls for the intermodal cars, since the bottom container sits inside the car on the floor.
It's not skirting, they are actually wells, to allow containers to be stacked more the wagon.
They are girl rail cars!
I don't why but something about trains always catches my attention.
Yep, all railfans perfectly understand what you're talking about...
Are the 4 Tier CSX ET44AH's the newest GEVO's in the CSX fleet?
+robert cummings Yes. But when the orders started to roll in, tier 3 GEVO's with high-ad trucks came in with the same road numbers as the tier 4 GEVO's.
very interesting, thanks for the info!
Despite their "newness" it appears the manufacturers still have not learnt a thing about operators environment in the cab. Why are these things still emitting the screaming whine of the blowers ? I have lost substantial hearing from those bloody things. And WHY do the couple up two locos with the cab in the middle ??? I would never take such a pairing out on traffic, back to the turntable they go, and couple them up with a cab each end.
@@itchyvet no offense, but you can't work for any North American Class 1 RR. If you think you're going to complain about the way the company / ROHO set the power up, and "insist on bringing it back to the ROHO turntable to have the trail unit spun" so they're not both facing the same direction, your smoking crack. There's no reason to and it would be a waste of time and resources. Besides, your conductor wouldn't let you, nor would the ROHO. You definitely don't work in North America Class 1's.
Gee Drew351, what a clever fellow you are. I'm pretty sure a thorough reading of my posts on here, will clearly state what you've just discovered. Also I suspect it may be YOU who is doing the smoking Old Chap, I thought I made it quiet plain, that I refused to work a locomotive long end leading, it matters not whether they are multi coupled or a single unit. B.T.W. might I also take this opportunity to point out that in the thirty years I worked in the industry, we only ever had ONE fatality on the main line. I guess that speaks for it'self regarding our safety culture.
Really cool shots. Love the airship too.
Yea, the blimp was special lol. Thanks, great you enjoyed the video!
24:38 train farted
Sweet shot of the legendary MetLife blimp at the start of the video, dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lol, thanks :)
Your loading gauge is so much bigger than ours.
Yep, it's insane...
Max load per freight car is 143 short ton I.E. 286,000 pounds per freight car now take a unit coal train as an example 100 cars average if using aluminum cars they can load 120 tons per car times 100 cars not counting the rare weight of the cars themselves. West of the Mississippi River they will run them at up to 50 mph.
Our clearances over hear are a lot more generous then in The UK or Ireland.
Cheers!
Hope FEC catches onto the Tier 4s and purchases a fleetworth of these. I like them better than the ES44C4s now! Loved the video!
I certainly agree. Thanks, glad you liked the video!
mbmars01 No problem!
what camera do you use?
Panasonic HC-V550. I don't use any sophisticated equipment, actually.
thanks man! i have been looking for a good camera that wont break the bank. Seems like train spotters always have the cameras with the best zoom
doubleutubefan5
Well, at least I have. The zoom was the main reason for purchasing this camera, because no other offered that much. As a human railfan I cannot intrude into railyards, but this camera can lol
ascending /descending @ 6:40 was awesome
Why the bloody hell go to all this trouble? A big case of overkill, but I guess if the US has 50 layers of Police, FBI, Homeland Security, Railroad Bulls, they have to have something to do. It’s a mystery that every kid with a spray can vandalizes the cars, and all the cars given enough time, but the hoppers generally leave the ride as they found it, having no desire to leave any evidence they were ever there, but it’s the later that gets the law’s undies in a bunch. You can’t stop it boys, it’s Americana, history, live and let live
There is another reason the railroads take unauthorized passengers seriously: LIABILITY! It is, and always has been, illegal to "hobo" trains. Because people are so eager to sue somebody, the railroads are an easy target. We on NS were told to report anybody on the RoW, on equipment, or on RR property at once and get them OUT. A particular case comes to mind. One Friday night a news magazine report came on that changed everything about the railroad's attitude towards trespassers and the railfan community. Seems a 13 year boy was killed by a train when he and some friends went out onto a trestle. There were numerous signs at the entrances to the trestle warning "NO TRESPASSING" and "DANGER". Like so many of the public that does not take trains seriously, these kids ignored the signs and went out onto the trestle. The boy''s family was SUING the company (NS) even tho the accident was not their fault. The wild-eyed news media picked up on the story and presented the story as if the train jumped off the rails and chased the boys down just to run them over! Railroads were painted in a bad light. Railroaders everywhere were incensed over this portrayal of railroads a villains! And, BOY, was NS ever MAD. They had been tolerant towards rail buffs, lenient towards trespassers, readily supported public relations programs, such as the NS Steam Program, and THIS was the thanks they got! Monday morning, we were called into the offices and told from that moment forward, ANY trespasser, any rider, any unauthorized persons on railroad property were to be reported to the railroad police immediately. Our property was NOT out there for the enjoyment of the public, and we ourselves would be in trouble if we failed to report or remove trespassers from our property. It is, after all, PRIVATE PROPERTY! Do YOU allow people to ride their cars across your grass?
Easy responce, advise the parents, if they persist with their law suite, responce would be to counter sue the parents of the kids for trespassing.
very nice video keep them coming..
Thank you, I'm happy you liked it.
very welcome am sure, look forward to next video
Why waste all the time and fuel just to get a hobo off the train?
Because being involved in a fatal accident is really bad for the train staff, and the people having to clean up the train afterwards. If it had been you on the track however, they would not have stopped, not with that attidtude.
Nice chase! 4:29 Thought the gate failed to descend all they way. Now see that it is being installed.
+Robert Gift Thanks!
6:30 that looks steep
While they are big hills, the hills are spread out over nearly 2 miles, so its not as steep as it appears.
Any GE AC locomotive's purchased in the last couple of years comes with a GE supplied maintenance contract and GE makes sure they get the correct maintenance required by GE. This makes them more reliable as 98 % of railroad shop facilities are setup and their personal trained to maintain EMD power. Anything else GE ALCO got substandard service which contributed to their less than stellar performance. Most railroad shop employees look at Alcos and GE locomotive's as oddballs and don't like them because they are a little more difficult to service versus EMD locomotive's. I saw this with my own eyes on the old Boston and Maine railroad back in the 60's with a bunch of 539 powered switchers and 5 6-251 powered S-5 switchers and 30 odd ALCO RS-3's. Shop forces liked the switchers as they considered them virtually indestructible but felt the 244 engined road switchers while good when they ran required too much maintenance.
The reason GE came out with the universal series locomotive's that we know as Uboats is because ALCO was losing business to EMD due to The bad reputation ALCO got with early 244 engine problems and by the time they straitened the 244 out and made it reliable the damage was done and ALCO never recovered so GE and ALCO separated and GE continued with their development of the cooper-Bessemer design diesel they introduced in 1959 as the U25B/C locomotive which within a couple of years eclipsed ALCO as the number 2 locomotive manufacturer in the US. The universal series Diesel engines were an outgrowth of the GE 70 ton locomotive which used a 6 cylinder inline turbocharged Cooper-Bessemer diesel engine rated at 600 horsepower that GE like so much they bought the design from CB to develop it further.
Thanks! I figure these were more interesting times back then regarding different types of power. It's getting a bit too uniform nowadays.
I pretty much agree. I will have to say that GE has been much much better in the last decade. I would not limit it to "couple of years". But yeah, GE made it difficult to maintain older used locomotives. Lousy parts sourcing and not as many maintenance experts available. GM just made things so much easier to maintain. All changed now though
I was wondering how much thousands of dollars has been lost for being stopped so long
If you stop a train, even for a few minutes, you're messing with Americans economy.
Not really. No. OK. Maybe a tiny amount if the crew goes on overtime or a bit more diesel burned. But in general a few minutes delay is always built into the schedule.
14:36 Can someone please explain to me why they put the bigger containers on top of the smaller ones?
Whichever needs to be unloaded first. Saves time.
@@simplywonderful449 ah. That makes sense!
also weight. smaller container might be heavier.
It's because the smaller containers are 20 Footers in there loaded extremely heavy so they put the heavier ones on the bottom that outweighs the bigger container 4 weight distribution
jb hunt. an arkansas walmart company delivering to walmart
I have some HO intermodal well cars and JB Hunt containers, but never seen them till now anywhere else. I don’t think I've seen them up here in Seattle.
Really? I thought JB Hunt is everywhere...
