The hand checking stuff is 100% a factor but with how good guys are at getting calls now, more physical defense probably just leads to more FTs even with rule changes. Not to mention a potential officiating crisis
@@SLExtra-xc4mv well the officiating is already not great because they allow offensive players to initiate contact and give them the call anyways. I think bringing back hand checking in a more offensive dominated era would be fun to watch and the league would just have to hold the refs accountable for making the right call. Reminds me when the league first started allowing dribble moves with hands under the ball and the “gather” step. Took time for officials to start calling it correctly but eventually lead to a more exciting product to watch.
Players are 100% better than 10 years ago thats always been the overall trend everyone's far more skilled now regardless of position. I love the modern offense it's beautiful but I also want the defense to have far more freedom to come up with ways to stop them. I'm not a fan of shootouts the game has two sides both should feel impactful
Jordan is still my GOAT, but most people exaggerate the wrestling defense from the past eras. Defense might be tighter to look at on 80s to 90s not entirely because defending is better, but because shot creation by average is poor. Players today are objectively better, but it's not right also to argue that this generation is better, because if you put nba player in the past when they are like 15 and put it in this era of medicine and technology, they will also be better.
This is MASSIVE. People don't understand how much this slow the pace of the games. After every rebound you reset and set up a brand new full play instead of just giving back to your the lead guard into a PnR.
I watch Heat games. Defenses can still hold teams to more modest scoring totals, but it leads to more injuries, less credit, lower counting stats, and less awards. Of course most teams don’t want to buy into defense. It’s not gonna get you the props that young players rightfully desire.
That’s the problem though. If all these young players care about stats and awards then they aren’t playing the game the way it was meant to be played. They were never meant to just play for stats and awards and if this ends up staying the case I can imagine the nba sucking and getting worse slowly but surely with each passing generation. I hope it doesn’t come to that but we are already kind of seeing it take place with all of the intensity being taken out the game and quite frankly too much of a focus on just offense. If this is the case I personally don’t think they should “rightfully” desire anything because I don’t think the awards and amazing stats were meant for that to be what all the players aim for.
I'm so glad i'm a Nuggets fan. We played such a slow pace, playing good offense, no chucking 3PT ans running back to then rebound and chuck another 3PT. We play set play, half court offense, post and kick and cuts Thank god my Nuggets plays a brand of basketball that is so different, unique and fresh compare to the rest of the league
They should help the defense a little maybe no more defensive 3 seconds violation in the paint and maybe if the offense runs into the defensive player it should be an offensive foul…
That would probably hurt more with developing big men because they feel more inclined to just camp the paint instead of leaning to defend perimeter players
The NBA is actually boring nowadays. The ball is just being passed around the 3 point line…. Everyone is chucking up 3s. There are no role players any more. Everyone has the same role… shoot 3s.
People say that there's not aggressive defense and that if you breathe on a guy, he gets a call. But I distinctly remember back in the 2000s complaining about the same thing with ticky-tack foul calls.
I think it's a problem. I dont watch a ton of games. But every time I do there will be a 5-6 stretch of possessions of both teams just going back and forth chucking (and MISSING) 3s. So yea the pace is up but not at all in a good way. I'd personally rather see more ball movement and set offenses than 3s and layups.
6:27 explains why scoring is up more so than anything else you've presented. Also, I've seen more forearm shivers, stiff arms, and Heisman's in the NBA in the last couple of years than nearly all my years of watching NFL and College football. How this league is officiated makes it nearly unwatchable, regardless of "how much better" the players are. Thanks Adam Silver.
Hot take: There is an over-saturation of game winners late in the games because the NBA is trying to milk every highlight of the sport which is leading to an over-saturation, and a depreciation towards watching NBA basketball- they do it through officiating and tayloring foul calls in favour of the offense. Example 2: 50 pt games are a nightly occurence and mean nothing anymore!
There has been a lot of blow outs this season than the last couple of years. We had multiple nights where each game was a blow out , your narrative is completely wrong.
Gianni’s is an ovverated defender. Guys like Bam Ad and Embiid all anchor their defense and Giannis can’t do that yet people claim he is the best 2way player.🤦🏻♂️
I would have to disagree because defensive scheme is very important. Also, if we’ve watched those other two teams and their perimeter, defense is actually better than the bucks because I don’t know if you seen a Bucs game but my gosh Brooke Lopez gets targeted like hot potato plus they won’t bench him and just make Giannis the center at the end of games and allow him to just enter the defense
I shall compare these scoring totals to the lengths of bridges that cross a certain river, like (say) the Thames. The farther upstream (that is, the further back in time), the shorter those bridges need to be (which in this case corresponds to lower point totals). Farther downstream (forward in time), we see longer bridges because the river is wider. For the current season, the bridge in question, if it is indeed the Thames, would be _the_ London Bridge (in its current condition). Bridges east of this would need to be even longer (and thus, more expensive), and might even be impossible to build. This is the perfect analogy for current NBA offenses (and future ones, if this keeps up), so the NBA needs to do something about this.
Watch Heat games if you want ethical hoops. They'll even force the teams they're playing to play the same grimey, putrid, disgusting, unwatchable basketball they do, the way God intended.
Im a fan of Houston Rockets and Hakeem. I really like histoire game, but sometimes when i see an entier game if the 90's, it's really bad : no transition, just pass to the Big men, no cuts... I really prefer the game now, but i want more defense (you cant play d in 2024l
What is considered a foul in the game is what's hurting it, 1. blocking fouls are usually good defense and 2 the player on offense shouldn't be able to initiate their own contact
Defense is not as sexy as points. Look at the world we're living. Its all about looks, money, status. Same goes for stats. 3 pointers. Back in the day, it was more about teamwork.
Offenses have also advanced as a system ridiculously. NBA level players and teams are so good at forcing mismatches, creating 2 on 1s and just forcing defenders to that just defending more aggressively isn't going to solve anything. Couple that with the speed we're now playing at and your not going that far. Offense has been evolving and still is. Defense just hasn't evolved since the 2000s.
There’s a few problems wrong with the NBA right now. I think one of the biggest ones is the officiating and the referees. They are so bad and so inconsistent on a night to night basis, plus, a lot of em are so full of themselves and are really power tripping. They need to start being held accountable for how bad they are. They should have to face the media after games and answer questions about calls they made, they should get fined after a certain amount of bad and/or wrong calls are made, especially some of the technical fouls and ejections I’ve seen this year. The 2nd biggest problem that makes it less enjoyable is how often players cry, complain, flop and beg for calls. If they fixed these two problems, the NBA would be way more enjoyable to watch during the regular season.
They don't want players to play hard defense because that's how fights starts, techs fly, and then the league looks bad because it seems like they just let players get away with hard fouls.
Most fans aren’t basketball sickos who are watching all 30 teams facing off against each other and watching several games a night and getting an overdose of uniformity, they’re watching their own team who will sometimes face off against a similar style but sometimes face off against a different style. And more casual fans without a team can just put more Denver on their slate or something. Also, even if general offensive strategies are the same, Tyrese Haliburton doesn’t look all that similar to Ja Morant or Shay Gilgeous-Alexander in how they move/pass/score to me, so I don’t understand the complaint of uniformity when individual stars will still have a particular way about them and the NBA has always been a star driven league. And besides, there’ll be teams trying something slightly different with their team composition, like Minnesota, and teams that are too flat out bad to look like everybody else. (Not to keep bashing on Detroit who’ve apparently been improving recently and I personally haven’t watched much of, but you can’t honestly tell me Detroit consistently plays anything close to what’s described in this video.) So it’s far from just Denver and Golden State that’s providing variety (not that I think Golden State is even that good of an example of differences anymore). So I strongly disagree that teams looking similar is a problem in today’s NBA or could become a problem in the near future.
Coming from a single team fan as in I only watch my team so I watch on average 4 games a week I am sometimes frustrated when a game turns into a free throw contents but for the most part I enjoy the fan experience. Could be different if I watched 5 games in a single day.

It’s really just about the spacing, because of the 3 point boom the lanes and the paint aren’t clogged up all the time which means when you cook that first guy if someone helps It’s from the 3 line instead of from the block.
Remove the defensive 3 sec rule and allow hand checking.
Also the power forward becoming essentially a taller small forward that likely rebounds better as opposed to a faster center is said to have led to more spacing.
They just tweaked the sliders and now it's easier to green shots.
When you change professional basketball rules to elementary school rules, all the professional players of course take a leap on offense
There should be less fouls with the hand checking and defensive rule changes. That’s something not taken into account. Defense is way less than it was.
You missed to discuss the 14 second shot clock on offensive rebounds
This is MASSIVE. People don't understand how much this slow the pace of the games. After every rebound you reset and set up a brand new full play instead of just giving back to your the lead guard into a PnR.
They just need to figure out a way to bring up the defense more
I watch Heat games.
We play set play, half court offense, post and kick and cuts
Thank god my Nuggets plays a brand of basketball that is so different, unique and fresh compare to the rest of the league
They should help the defense a little maybe no more defensive 3 seconds violation in the paint and maybe if the offense runs into the defensive player it should be an offensive foul…
That would probably hurt more with developing big men because they feel more inclined to just camp the paint instead of leaning to defend perimeter players
Especially when shai gillgeous Alexander on the okc does it...the league is literally rewarding this man with intentionally initiating contact
@@sodalangstson9438 I get it i’m just throwing out idea
I hate watching SGA play
@@nydibs I love sga lol
The NBA is actually boring nowadays. The ball is just being passed around the 3 point line…. Everyone is chucking up 3s. There are no role players any more. Everyone has the same role… shoot 3s.
Let’s backup the three point line again and get rid of blocking fouls. That’s my quick fix.
Thank you he has a fake DPOY Too
Are all of those guys better offensively than him?
I would have to disagree because defensive scheme is very important. Also, if we’ve watched those other two teams and their perimeter, defense is actually better than the bucks because I don’t know if you seen a Bucs game but my gosh Brooke Lopez gets targeted like hot potato plus they won’t bench him and just make Giannis the center at the end of games and allow him to just enter the defense
@@justtimes9257bench him for who?. They literally have no bench
@@Ash_38_embiid arguably yes not Ad and Bam tho, 🤷♂️
Amazing video, always a fresh perspective
Watch Heat games if you want ethical hoops. They'll even force the teams they're playing to play the same grimey, putrid, disgusting, unwatchable basketball they do, the way God intended.
Facts lmaooo even if we don’t score you won’t either
Im a fan of Houston Rockets and Hakeem. I really like histoire game, but sometimes when i see an entier game if the 90's, it's really bad : no transition, just pass to the Big men, no cuts... I really prefer the game now, but i want more defense (you cant play d in 2024l
Steph and those warriors teams rlly changed the game that much
What is considered a foul in the game is what's hurting it, 1. blocking fouls are usually good defense and 2 the player on offense shouldn't be able to initiate their own contact
It’s been like this for years teams just jack up 3s and play no D.
Been like this for like 4years bc of less defense and more 3s
Most European players who dominate the NBA say the "NBA is easier to score than Euro League" bc of the fact of the nba rules HEAVILY favoring offense
Great analysis and video!
Defensive rule changes have devolved defense.
good video - well explained - maybe the comment section should have watched the video
watching games where the final score is 87-79 like in the 90s in the best cure for insomia
NBA should make the rim smaller than the ball. Scoring is getting out of control.
The next level is and always will be SlamBall.
The NBA should consider going back to regulation size courts
It all comes down to how they officiate the game
nothing will change as long as Adam Silver is commissioner
Cant wait until theres a 200 point game
I miss defense. Give me the 2010s Spurs.
Coming from a single team fan as in I only watch my team so I watch on average 4 games a week I am sometimes frustrated when a game turns into a free throw contents but for the most part I enjoy the fan experience. Could be different if I watched 5 games in a single day.
The difference is now if you can’t shoot 3s you probably aren’t going to be in the league for long. And 3>2
How about a crazy change? The home teams can decide if the 3 point is in effect or not.
I think a 4 point line would be more exciting than that personally
RANDOM NBA AWARD QUESTION: Should NBA split Defensive Player of the Year in 2 awards? DPOY: Post/Rim Protector and DPOY: Perimeter. What do you all think?
The NBA just implemented SBMM and now everybody can score on defenses
Yes it's a problem. Defense is apart of basketball.
If there are guys you can't do anything about... umm. Wouldn't teams build with such pieces in place
Offenses have never been higher scoring, not better. And players are NOT ‘better’ now.
Tbh my biggest issue with watching professional basketball is all the timeouts. You have constant pauses throughout the game to a ridiculous level at times.
They all have the same amount of time outs for decades. Theres 6 in each half. It's not ridiculous at all.
@@blowc1612 I mean general pauses in play. Fouls, the time it takes in between getting to the free throw line or the sideline. It messes with the whole flow of the game from a viewership standpoint.
Yes it's very simple, more points equals more superstars = more money, it's a Circus business
They want the 2000's and up records to be broken to protect the history of the game. Or this can be a way to attract or get the attention of fans.
i would say nba d is out of control
Remove the defensive 3 second rule
It's funny that one of the teams with highest pace is... Pacers
"The Pacemakers..."
I'll see myself out
There a lot more casual watchers. But dedicated nba fans don’t care about games until the playoffs. Also, the amount of traveling and carrying has given offenses way too much freedom.
It dosent matter what defense u play on most players in the league nowadays u just gotta hope that they miss there shots it’s to much talent in the league
More 3s, higher pace, and a lot more layups...worse defense
You're welcome
Amount of offensive possessions plain and simple if you keep the same fg or 3pt % but shoot alot more thats the answer 36% of 100 is 36 but out of 200 attempts its doubled
people just dont know how to play defense. period . DEFENSE IS AN ART very very few can master
Basketball has advanced.
But less exciting for as old pips .
Teams had their signature style of play back then .We still fans tho 🎉
I just dont understand the whole it prevents injuries which is why defensive players has to set there feet when if an offensive player is charging at you full speed and lowering his shoulder what are you as a defensive player suppose to do just set your feet and just take it? Notice how the best defensive players in the league are the ones that usually foul the most its bc they play aggressive defence more
Pace, way more 3’s and offensive friendly calls
No defense in this league. Thats it.
Games have become a three-point contest. Kinda boring.
1:08 you are wrong man. My Spurs don't have any great shoot makers 😢
What if you add a limit to the amount of screens you can set, 1 on ball screen and each player gets one or 2 screens per possession?
Lol, just call moving screens.
Because of 3 points, the defense is stretched
when you mentioned the percentage isn't very different you have to remember the about of attempts their taking
He mentioned that later.
I dont have a problem with the game at all, I just enjoy the game beeing played, what bothers me the most is the oficiating, if your game have rules follow them for everybody, not just give a call for some and dont for others
Every rule helps the offense
Not hard they call every little contact a foul
35 plus is nuts and that's y
Can someone please explain how charging fouls are called?
NBA refs: Can you please explain what a charge is?
@@walterworthy7494 😭😭man if they don't even know I might as well never get the answer
MJ would struggle in this era :^)
I think you used the 3pt data wrong. Yes, the 3pt% is kinda the same as 20/10 years ago, but on how many shots/game? Teams nowdays average waaaaay more 3PAs than 20 years back from now
He mentioned that later on.
