These guys are so generous and genuinely nice. I met Simon and John 28 years ago (!!) in Austin (along with Michael Hutchence from INXS) and they were so kind to me-just this random fan. My friend Heidi and I got to have drinks with them in the Four Seasons hotel bar. Nicest, nicest, down-to-earth, inquisitive, genuine and sweet. It was SUCH an honor to get to do that. I’ve seen them just about every time they’ve come to Austin since, most recently at weekend one of the Austin City Limits Festival. I’m a Duranie forever ❤️ Can’t wait to get Future Past!

I had a similar experience with Nick (33 years ago!). I was a lowly record company intern who met him at a small gathering after a show. He could NOT have been nicer or more down to earth. Got to talk with him for an hour about nothing (TV shows, music, whatever). It was the best. I am genuinely happy for these guys to have held together and kept making music for so long, particularly after being the flavor of the moment teen dream band in the '80s. Good for them.

I can't remember a better band interview in content, tone, and spirit. An hour was too short! And congrats on an excellent new album and going strong after 40 years!
Well stated, for sure rapport. I made comment above how an hour is kind of ridiculous but that's how these things roll I guess. It was just starting to get going
Many dont realize how much Duran Duran revolutionized the music industry back then until now. It wasnt that MTV alone changed it for them, but they did have videos that were far better than the average back then. Also their music was different to the standard new romantics back then, as they mixed dance, rock and later funk into the music. Which was way ahead of the industry.
Truth! Their pop success has always diminished their talent and adventurous approach to music. Too many people dismissed them as a simple “pop band” without listening to the actual music.
Ya sounded so modern yet future pop when rio lp hit the stores in the 83. Still sounds fresh. Unlike say the Beatles who are awesome still but the sound was stuck in a time warp. I'd say enough time has past since rio came out for this comparison.
My parents were mentally absent from my life as a kid, so I was raised by the pop culture of the 80s. I think am a better person for it. Duran Duran, icons of an era.
That has to be one of the best interviews I've seen with a group in a long time. Really relaxed, indepth, complete with a very knowledgable interviewer in Rob Sheffied. Very cool.
40 years on and I'm still interested in what Duran Duran have to say about their music. Future Past is a brilliant album, probably my favourite since Rio.
They were in the air when I was a teenager, but I was only as big as fan as the next guy. But I really loved John's bass guitar tutorials during lockdown, and have been listen to more and more of their stuff. And they're all so well adjusted for being famous for so long. Will definitely hunt out a CD copy of this.
Kudos to Rob Sheffield for facilitating such a wonderful "dialogue" with DD. Light years ahead of most celebrity or musician interviews. His books are pretty great also. "Love is a Mix Tape" is a very moving memoir of love and loss. Well done, Rob!
I like that the interviewer didn't spend the entire interview talking about the band's past and actually focused a fair bit on the Future Past album. That being said, this interview brought out the interpersonal dynamic between the guys much better than any other I have seen of theirs. Great to see Duran Duran back after 6 years with an album that is far superior to "Paper Gods".
The interviewer was excellent. Humble, fan, respectful but very well researched and knowledgeable and brilliant at facilitating really insightful answers from the band. Wonderful work.
I love The Beatles, The Stone Roses, Radiohead, Gangs Of Youths but the band I loved the most was Duran Duran as a 14 year old in 1983 Britain. No band has ever before and since had the impact in my life that these guys had. I queued up for 2 hours before school once so I could secure my vinyl copy of "Is There Something I Should Know". Still gives me goosebumps when I hear it today.
One the few bands from the 80s who are still creative, innovative, making new music that is great- not relying on old hits.. they are incredible! plus still hot!
This is such a delightful interview. The camaraderie between Roger, Nick, Simon and John is heartwarming - and the interviewer was fab too! Looks like DD got on really well with him and really enjoyed speaking with him.
Just listening to these boys makes you understand why they are still together making great music! They are good human beings as a base, being a great musician by itself is not enough! Beautiful and smooth interview!
Duran Duran is a fantastic pop/rock band with talented, hard working artists who happen to be good looking. The best of all worlds. Love DD forever 💗⭐️!
I just have to say, after hearing so many things like this, I am SO glad I spent my teen years in St. Louis. We listened to almost everything. Old stuff, new stuff, Southern rock, metal, hair bands, even Air Supply (remember them?) So Duran Duran wasn't some bizarre genre of music to us, it was just music. Really good music. Great videos. Cute guys (I mean you, John, especially)--hey, what can I say? Teenage girl. The only barrier to between us and loving Duran Duran was hearing that first song. Once cable made it to your neighborhood, or when you were visiting a friend, there they were. And that was all it took.
In most interviews lead singer and guitar guy do all the talking while the others sit there and fade away with these guys all are involved maybe that’s why they’re still together good for them. This is a band that deserves more respect and I hope they get it
Great interview done by Rob Sheffield. It is in depth and intelligent. Duran are so well spoken. It’s fantastic to hear their thoughts on the new album and also on their past work. I’m so happy for their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination, and hope they actually get inducted. They absolutely deserve it! On a different note, John Taylor is still fine as can be!! OMG!! 🤩🤩😍😍
It’s so nice to see an Interview with Duran Duran that doesn’t start with how they met and where they got the name of the band. As a Duran Duran fan since I was 12 and now 49 it is so nice to watch an interview that Celebrates the band for their music and their technique and their interest in music. Great interview Rolling Stone! The interviewer actually knows The music and the band’s accomplishments and asked intellectual and interesting questions which challenged the band and initiated answers and discussions I’ve not heard before!
Good interview and what I liked the most is how the interviewer acknowledges that for a long time Rolling Stone would give Duran Duran bad reviews and now recognize what a great band it is.
back in the 80 s you had these loser hippie critics at RS that dumped on DD and the whole new wave music scene...it was all writers who were about 40 years old that felt if you did not sound like Crosby Stills and Nash or James Fucking Taylor you were a shit band.....Fuck those guys......I bet a lot of them are dead or no longer employed and DD are still going strong.....
It blows my mind that they would even get bad reviews. My whole experience of them in early MTV years (I was in elementary school at the time) was just that they were fresh, creative, and powerful, and every bit in the forefront as anyone was and for years.
It just makes me soooo happy they’re all still alive, still (back) together, and still making great music. Since junior high their sound and fashion has been a joy in my life. And Roger is one of my favorite drummers. If I ever succeed in drumming Rio, it will be a personal victory. And no other singer I’ve ever heard sounds even remotely like Simon.
Wow, listening to these guys is like reading the best music encyclopedia ever written. They describe with such accuracy all the musical trends of the last 50 years. Refreshing and entertaining. You can feel their inner passion burning. And their undivided frienship. Still a great bunch, after all these years. Long live to them.
Great interview. The love, appreciation and respect they have for each other permeates throughout. We need to step back and appreciate the genius of Duran Duran. We are all so lucky that this band still exists. 40 years strong. Collectively, their genius still yields brilliant results.
I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard Hungry Like the Wolf. Also, The Union of the Snake. Duran Duran was the first concert I attended. Saw them at the Hampton Colosseum in Norfolk Virginia. I snuck a camera into the venue and still have the photos I took to this day! The concert was magical. Duran Duran was my first musical love and has endured all of these years. Truly one of a kind! 💖
I utterly enjoyed this sit down...the bands & interviewer's dissecting approach, of their 40 years. Brilliant! I feel so blessed, what an impact their musical journey, has had to my life's soundtrack😍 ❤️DURAN🤗🙏🎉
So much in this conversation. A celebration of music, their friendship, and their staying power. A must see for any fan of music. They are, above all, fans of music. The speak with so much reverence and respect of the music that came before them, at the same time and the music of today.
Great interview. I can't get enough of those guys. They are so down to earth, genuine and kind. It''s so nice to have a band that appeals to all generations. I am rediscovering the Duran music.
Cannot get enough of this band who have been such a big part of my life since I stumbled onto MTV when my mom first got cable TV. Their songs are the anthem for my life. I miss Andy so much but the memories and the music will go on
Ah! So so good!!! Their energy for creation, innovation, life, music passion.. it’s unlike anything else.. I’ve loved them most of my life.. as a lifelong fan of this band.. it’s like a world that’s just ours and theirs yet expands with every new interaction.. it’s a mutually respected and highly coveted connection I don’t know if any other fan base has. This new album is phenomenal! They are phenomenal!!! We love you forever Duran Duran!!! Duranies Rock On Forever!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Such an awesome band. I too discovered Duran Duran at my grandmother’s house. I remember the moment & what I was wearing when I was sitting on the carpet in front of the TV in the den and Planet Earth aired on MTV in 1981. At that moment, my world changed.
Me too! At my Grandmother's house on a Saturday morning, an Australian music show called Sounds was on - I remember it so clearly seeing the Planet Earth video for the first time - I was standing by the lounge room door and it stopped me in my tracks & that was it for me - A life-long obsession was born.
Duran Duran continues to this day to bridge the music of yesterday to the music of tomorrow. Enjoyed hearing the history of music from their valuable perspective
Such a nice interview! A good interviewer is like a good football coach who has to manage football stars. He just give the basic instructions and let them express their skills. The same is happening here. The interviewer brought the basic topics and allowed the band members to give their impressions and opinions about each topic addressed. It was like a talk among friends. All band members really feel comfortable to talk in this interview. Indeed one of the nicest things among Duran Duran members is that they are indeed good friends out of the studio/stage as well.
I agree Lou Holtz would have been perfect here. Maybe Harbaugh since a tad younger. Oh wait did you mean 'soccer!' I'm just mad he got arm rests and was more comfy
Great band and a terrific new album! Strangely though my fav track of all time has always been NOTORIOUS ! Play it constantly.Super interview, smart, funny and deep.
For many years I used to consider Duran Duran as a pre-fabricated band, and as years passed I discovered they are very talented musicians, specially John and his recognizable basslines. This delightful interview shows a face I didn't expect so see from them. They look like a group of friends talking music in a relaxed way and respecting each other's interventions. This is delighful.
Thanks to Rob and the boys for such a wonderful, insightful interview. It's so great to see them 40 years on and to know they all still really enjoy being together. ❤
I am a long time fan of Duran Duran and today I still love their music!! I was glad to watch this interview as I always learn a lot from the band members as I hear them speak. It is clear as to why they lasted forty years in the music business as they seem to have a authentic closeness with each other that comes through their work. That authentic connection is what draws the fans to them and their music through the decades!
Excellent interview! This is such a brilliant new album ! For the lifelong Duranies it takes us back with fond memories and moves us into the future with new epic memories to come. 💕 Hall of Fame - yes please!
Welcome to the party, rolling stone. Honest, real interview, very much appreciated. All members are unique, and very talented. The sound that separates them most from the other bands of the 80's, is Andy's guitar. Andy, along with the other talented bandmates, make gold. Stay gold, duran duran
I had the chance to see them this past weekend in SF. I have to say they still put in a great show . They knew how to mix new and classic songs together ❤️.
Glad to see duran duran still rocking. Recording new album and still touring. These guys are LEGENDS! Simon lebon is such an underatted frontman and vocalist.
Great interview, GREAT INTERVIEWER. Thank you for throwing out ideas and talking points then letting the guys talk. So happy to see my favourite band of all time still - always - going strong. Duranie Forever!
Future Past had me in tears! This is such a great album I keep hearing more and more every time the songs repeat. Quality album. Something missed in new artists music today. But then again most now so called artists are puppets………….
This was fascinating! I was totally captivated by watching and listening to these intelligent and honest men. Their mutual respect and affection clearly evident. Great Album!

Very cool.
Definitely! you can see the different personalities of the group and how well they get on as friends and as musicians, great interview x
He deserves to have a tv talk show.
40 years on and I'm still interested in what Duran Duran have to say about their music. Future Past is a brilliant album, probably my favourite since Rio.
They are still together. 4 guys creating pure musical magic.
Theze boys are just bloody brilliant.
Have respected and loved these guys since 1979…respect to you Brothers! 👍
I loved them in the 80’s but now in my 40’s I appreciate them more and more
The interviewer was excellent. Humble, fan, respectful but very well researched and knowledgeable and brilliant at facilitating really insightful answers from the band. Wonderful work.
22:38 except he said Hungry/Wolf includes the word disco ...but it's not, it's *discord*
@M W 🤣
@@ThisIsJamesL he did.missed that.
Looks like a vampire 🦇
I was eight years old when I first heard Duran Duran. I have loved them ever since that day in 79’.Their music just keeps getting better imho.🥰
Just like me 😬 then o had to learn to play guitar and make music
Well you need intellect to understand the Beatles and stones so quite understandable...😂😂😂
Spot on...
One the few bands from the 80s who are still creative, innovative, making new music that is great- not relying on old hits.. they are incredible! plus still hot!
My favorite 80’s band on the planet!!! Love these guys! 🌸
This is such a delightful interview. The camaraderie between Roger, Nick, Simon and John is heartwarming - and the interviewer was fab too! Looks like DD got on really well with him and really enjoyed speaking with him.
Duran and Duran is on 🔥 fire... they are ROCK LEGENDS and so ,so LOVE how they remain original. Truly legendary 🙌
Great seeing bands like Duran Duran forging ahead after 40 years. Excellent interview, thanks for posting!
these 4 are amazing.... these are true musicians.... this is how it should have continued ofc your kind has managed to ruin everything
Just listening to these boys makes you understand why they are still together making great music! They are good human beings as a base, being a great musician by itself is not enough! Beautiful and smooth interview!
Who downvotes this? This was a great interview. Open, honest, respectful, etc. Love the real talk about music, genres and marketing!
Thank you, Rolling Stone, for this long-form interview. Great to see the band given more than 5 minutes to share their perspective.
Fabulous interview, could listen all day. I love that Simon still has that necklace.
Old stuff, new stuff, Southern rock, metal, hair bands, even Air Supply (remember them?)
So Duran Duran wasn't some bizarre genre of music to us, it was just music.
Loving the #robsheffield interview of @duranduran & how each member gives their view and input into their music!!
💜💝♥️💖
It's really good isn't it?
In most interviews lead singer and guitar guy do all the talking while the others sit there and fade away with these guys all are involved maybe that’s why they’re still together good for them. This is a band that deserves more respect and I hope they get it
Agreed. I just texted my husband this as I'm watching the interview. "They're truly one of the few bands out there where each member is an equal.
Duran Duran was my favorite band! So many hits and their music was the soundtrack to my teenage/young adult years.
OMG!! 🤩🤩😍😍
So damn fine
Totally agree! John Taylor is sexy, AF.
They really appreciate each others musical skills... They really just basically like being in a band together... That is f... Awesome.
Duran duran have done it again!! This album is beautiful and what weve been waiting for
It’s so nice to see an Interview with Duran Duran that doesn’t start with how they met and where they got the name of the band. As a Duran Duran fan since I was 12 and now 49 it is so nice to watch an interview that Celebrates the band for their music and their technique and their interest in music. Great interview Rolling Stone! The interviewer actually knows
The music and the band’s accomplishments and asked intellectual and interesting questions which challenged the band and initiated answers and discussions I’ve not heard before!
The history between these guys is incredible. It's been a long road and I hope they keep on keeping on!
I have so much respect for those guys, they have all the cash they want and they keep making music with honest and humble ways, hat off to them
Good interview and what I liked the most is how the interviewer acknowledges that for a long time Rolling Stone would give Duran Duran bad reviews and now recognize what a great band it is.
back in the 80 s you had these loser hippie critics at RS that dumped on DD and the whole new wave music scene...it was all writers who were about 40 years old that felt if you did not sound like Crosby Stills and Nash or James Fucking Taylor you were a shit band.....Fuck those guys......I bet a lot of them are dead or no longer employed and DD are still going strong.....
It blows my mind that they would even get bad reviews. My whole experience of them in early MTV years (I was in elementary school at the time) was just that they were fresh, creative, and powerful, and every bit in the forefront as anyone was and for years.
Nice to have Rolling Stone revisit the band. So many wonderful stories from all the band members over a remarkable career.
Their fans from '80 like you and me are thinking they will pass me in life expectancy. Hey good luck on Rio I recently purchased a drum set
Nobody can play bass like John Taylor on Rio either!
You know you've grown up with a band, when 40 years on, having an adult beverage is replaced by spot of tea, during an interview. I love it!!!!
Oh dear God! Here we are in 2023 and we are still loving this band!!
So well said!
Great interview. The love, appreciation and respect they have for each other permeates throughout. We need to step back and appreciate the genius of Duran Duran. We are all so lucky that this band still exists. 40 years strong. Collectively, their genius still yields brilliant results.
Well said
💯
I still remember exactly where I was the first time I heard Hungry Like the Wolf. Also, The Union of the Snake.
Duran Duran was the first concert I attended. Saw them at the Hampton Colosseum in Norfolk Virginia. I snuck a camera into the venue and still have the photos I took to this day! The concert was magical.
Duran Duran was my first musical love and has endured all of these years. Truly one of a kind! 💖
Great interview. Have been a fan since 1983...one of the most iconic bands. DD forever!
I utterly enjoyed this sit down...the bands & interviewer's dissecting approach, of their 40 years. Brilliant!
I feel so blessed, what an impact their musical journey, has had to my life's soundtrack😍
❤️DURAN🤗🙏🎉
It's funny up to 'Ordinary World' and 'Reach for Sunshine' they were indeed soundtrack of my life. If I'd gone past that I'd probably have to implode
Nick! I love you!... "The Mona Lisa of the 1980's..."
Brilliant!🙂
Yes, I agree, they have a very unique & special fan base & a very special connection with their fans indeed 💕
Roger looks amazing! All of them, like a fine wine, for sure!
Roger aged the best.
All of them do
Such an awesome band.
On a similarly high level as the Rick Beato interview with Sting. That was just superlative - and Sting totally responded. This is as good.
Great interview with an extraordinary band. Future Past it's an amazing album.
This is so important conversation. All folks that are into music should listen to it. Cheers!
A great interview, so glad they are still creating and performing. I am so fortunate to have my favorite band still together😍.
Thanks to Rob and the boys for such a wonderful, insightful interview. It's so great to see them 40 years on and to know they all still really enjoy being together. ❤
Love Duran Duran. Such a great band. This interview is fabulous!!
One of my fave bands - good on them for still putting new music out 😍
I am a long time fan of Duran Duran and today I still love their music!!
Hall of Fame - yes please!
Welcome to the party, rolling stone.
Honest, real interview, very much appreciated. All members are unique, and very talented. The sound that separates them most from the other bands of the 80's, is Andy's guitar. Andy, along with the other talented bandmates, make gold.
Stay gold, duran duran
Can’t wait for the new album! Looking fabulous darlings! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oh I don’t know about that. He sure wasn’t underrated to us teenage girls in the 80’s! Good times.
Saw them last night! I grew up looking up to these men and it was one of the best concerts of my life! I love this band!
Saw them a few months ago too, it was GREAT!!!
Great interview, GREAT INTERVIEWER. Thank you for throwing out ideas and talking points then letting the guys talk. So happy to see my favourite band of all time still - always - going strong. Duranie Forever!
Greatest band of all time. They're able to keep their iconic sound whilst influencing the future of music.
The new album is awesome.
Great interview. I’ve loved these guys since the first time I saw them on MTV in the 80’s. My 20 yr old daughter is now a fan too!
