I think Stuart (Stewart?) could read a phone book and still sound amazing. What a voice. If you ever do an audiobook version of a book, get him to do the narration. We won’t see the beautiful garden pics of course but that’ll just be a trade-off. Visual for auditory.
I used to just love to shop - for anything! Over the past few years that's changed. First I was pretty much forced to retire, and had to be frugal. Then Covid came along. By now I'm actually enjoying being home most of the time as there's plenty I need to do here and it's not only a great sense of accomplishment, but I'm appreciating things I've found good uses for, and getting rid of excess.
I say, "roots" (rhyming with boots). My boyfriend is from New Jersey/Indiana, and says it like you, (rhyming with foot), but I love to hear you talk!! Just be your loveable self, and don't worry about correcting yourself for us.
When you said do you use what you have, it reminded me of the WWII saying (which I try and live by) ....Use it up... Wear it out... Make it do... or do without! I always shop my home, garage and garden first, And 99% of the time I find something I can use, and even like!
I'm not great on running errands either but do enjoy a garden nursery outing here and there. Husband had shoulder replacement surgery. I'm the nurse. I asked God to help me water and He sent 4 inches of rain yestetday. Praise the Lord. Don't know what to put in there but will need to be tall so other plants dont cover it up.
Stewart singing Jeopardy theme- hahaha! What a card. One of the few plants that grow large and lush in a particular area of my patio is the coleus. The past few years I've been finding the chocolate drop variety- a simply gorgeous plant comprised of small duo-colored leaves- burgundy in the middle outlined in bright green. I pair with electric lime coleus as well as sweet caroline raven sweet potato vine. Also adding a pop of color with superbells can really finish off the pots.
I am just like you! I acctually hate shopping, doing arrends etc. I think it is the way forward as it is ecofriendly and lower your footprint. Something we all need to do to help our planet survive! And you are an example of how to be more slowfashion/slow gardening etc. 👏👏👏😘
Linda, please allow me to say this, because I truly love looking forward to your upcoming videos! I have such a crush on you! It’s your smile,it’s your style,it’s your garden knowledge, your decor flair,it’s just everything. There. I said it. 🥰
What a great idea with the wire basket!! I LOVE the burlap look too. This is definitely an idea I will be trying! I've just gotta also tell you how much I LOVE your hair!! Really a great style on you! This was a really fun watch! I am so ready for fall and the beautiful warm colors it brings. I can't wait to see this planting in all its glory! Looks like you have a "Jeopardy fan" in Stewart...LOL. He did quite well with the little "jingle"! Sending lots of love and blessings your way!
There are also veggies that would work like merlot lettuce, frise, or edible flowers - calendula, whatever as the weather cools. Edible and elegant to quote someone.
Linda I’ve seen others add a baby diaper in hanging pots because they put a water absorbable solution or material to hold water also incontinence pads. That way the baskets don’t dry out so quickly I had to hanging baskets and I want to do that to them because I was constantly watering them we had high 90s all summer. Your basket is going to look beautiful. Love the idea of burlap. I always buy coco coir. Love your hair ~ cut so cute on you.
I don't like running errands but I do love going to a nursery or garden center once in a while. I also really like using stuff I have at home for planting. Great music Stewart:)
Coleus was Great Grandpa's container star. He over wintered them in jars in the washroom. I have gotten seeds at the different discount stores for them recently and had great sucess with those seeds. Red with the purple blooms always a favorite in big containers. I am 66 so you can put a time stamp on that.
I like to reuse/repurpose too…if I add new, it’s something I can’t live without (a new item for the long haul). Love the start you’ve made on this container. Since you asked, I’d use perhaps a grass & some ornamental peppers & kale/cabbage. I’d use gourds to fill in where needed. I love the color from mums, but they never seem to last as long as the other things I’ve suggested.
I definitely love to reuse what I have. I’ll paint, repurpose things before I’ll go buy new. Maybe I’m cheap but it’s more fun that way. Plus, my garden has history because several things have been with me over 20 years!
Since yesterday, Saturday, was cloudy with sprinkles every once in awhile, I spent the day transplanting baby Gazanias and Johnny Jump-Ups and Iris and Daisies and anything else I could get my hands on. Did a "walk about" the next morning and they were doing beautifully. Zone 7a Love what you do and envy all the shady spots in your garden. It is beautiful ♥
Zone 7b, W. TN I love using what I have on hand, instead of shopping for something new at a store. I don't buy new plastic, but will use old plastic things I have on hand, and have painted some Lg old plastic planters. Also, I traded small nursery pots for large ones with another gardener on a "fb free stuff" group. I love repurposing, and turning odd things into planters, and love buying old, metal or wood items at the junk store down the street for garden interest.
I am NOT a shopper, and I prefer to stay home. I guess I’m a homebody at heart. Your show has really helped me with reuse and what things I can reuse that I hadn’t thought about. Color for your planter…I would add yellow. I appreciate your show, ides and you!
Back in the late 80's to mid 90's overalls were "the thing". I had a pair and loved them! Wore them often especially when doing chores and yardwork. I've noticed that overalls are back in favor. I'm seeing them in the stores once again. I'm not sure I'll succumb, but I do agree that they're comfortable and great to work out in the yard in.
I don't have a garden center other than Lowe's so yes, I make do with what I have and I'm saving money! ☺ I ordered grow bags from Amazon this spring and I used them in one of your baskets and set it in my flower garden.
The planter will be fabulous. I love all my coleus, if there's a bare spot in any pots, I tuck in a coleus cutting. Anywhere I see a different variety, either buy it, or take a cutting.
Coleus is one of my favorite plants. I wish you could see one of my planters, it is actually a tall strawberry pot (coleus) that’s green and dark brown foliage. I pinched one plant back in early Spring and let the cuttings root in each opening. It’s beautiful. Enjoy your videos always. I ordered the black gardener sweat shirt today. Looking forward to wearing.
I saw some fall pots one year that were so striking. They had orange, dark burgundy, and lime green foliage. Probably coleus, choral bells, and sweet potato vines. They were in tall sky blue pots. I know some of these are very tender and will be gone at the first nip of frost, but they were so striking, I nearly ran off the road when I saw them as a drive by.
You just read my mind I plan to plant my coleus that’s in containers in ground but will take cuttings for the empty containers and fill up! I love my overalls I ordered in spring.. they are great! Thanks Linda & Stewart !!!!
Beautiful planting! I always cut back my Coleus here in central Florida several times during the summer but always just stick the cuttings in the ground or in pots to root. It never dawned on me to root them in water till you mentioned it in a video a while back. So I promptly went out and cut back all my Coleus and put the cuttings in water in pretty vases on my screened porch. It makes my porch look very tropical and colorful; and lo and behold they are all rooting! Now they are ready for fall planting in containers by my front entryway next month. Thanks for the great video. By the way, love your hair cut. 😊
Linda, you are looking so good. Your hair cut looks great and your arms are looking firmer and you look younger! Wow, I want what you are taking!! Lol, no I really know it's hard Work on yourself and determination to curtail the aging process. Good Job! It's working!!! 🏃♂️🤸♂️🤗
I ve found at home a sweetpotatoe that started to sprout. I will plant that in a big pot and in fall I will add a few decorative plants. I would add decorative peppers or even a special decorative cabbage. And maybe a hanging plant that really will cascade deeply ...tradescantia for instance. Maybe also a muehlenbeckia .... Have you ever tried to regrow spring onions. They really grow fast and produce flower heads and lateron seed heads that are smaller than your aliums. But also decorative. I also was wondering why dont you try to plant a decorative pumpkin at your compost bin area along the fence ...to hide the uglies. I forgot earlier to mention. If you buy decorative pumpkins this fall ...than try to safe some seeds . Would be a fun project for next year. There is an English variety of marygolds ( I mean Calendula) called " winter wonders" they can be sown now. Better soak the seeds a bit before and place that on paper. and plant it with the paper. They would flower in October ...but really the whole winter. If it gets very cold they dont die. In spring they will flower together with your tulips. they are in apricot soft colours till terracotta dark. Its nice. And when its colder they wont have the dark aphits ...thats why many people avoid them. kind regards Marcus
I love this video , I’m going right to my garden to collect some Coleus, and creat something like yours ….I love hearing Steward in the background …and love the overalls…thank you Linda , I look forward to your videos
So fun to watch you do this project! I’m getting ready to transplant my coleus cuttings which have been rooting indoors - your videos always help me in my gardening adventures!
So that's why my asters did not make it I planted them during the summer. May try them for the winter now. I live in the Low Arizona desert so our Winters on mild in my zone 9B. Same thing for my Cosmos. I got one flower out of each plant that grew and then they fried.
I plan for fall to use my coleus too, they are mostly purples, pinks and charteuse greens. So I will add the pink, purple mums and ornamental kale and cabbages. I like your idea of the basket on the pedestal, may try to also. I love the bronze mums but I want to use what I have left over from Summer to extend in Autumn.
Love the planter stand. I would use ornamental peppers or purple basil for fall color. I've started planting my rooted coleus cuttings. Didn't know how easy they were until I watched your videos. I hate running errands but love the garden center. Today I saw mums, pansies and ornamental peppers at local center. Am in the Washington DC area. Much too early for cool weather plants.
Thank you Stewart for the Sunday morning trivia! I asked my videographer/producer husband if he knew what C-47 was…. Why, yes he did! He said they are called that because that was the item number in the catalog (he’s dating himself here! 😅). He can’t remember which catalog though. Thank you Linda for sharing your beautiful garden. As always Linda, this was a brilliant tip. I need liners and was hesitant to get them as they degrade so quickly, this DIY will do nicely. Thank you!
