Finally got my hands on this in Ontario at the LCBO. I still like Lot 40 over this but I'm a fan of spicy ryes so this is certainly up there on my list.
Lot 40 is Ontario i think
Like an affordable bottle that's punching above it's price point? Better hope it doesn't win an award :/
I feel that way about Forty Creek. They could get away with charging way more for it, and I'm really glad they don't.
Thanks for the review. I was lucky enough to score this for $60 a few weeks back. Very flavorful and the spice profile on the back of the palate is excellent but good lord does this come in HOT. Made my Pikesville seem like water. I'm not sure this wouldn't have been a better product at 110-120 proof. Cheers!
This bottle is very good for the money. They cost 60 cnd which is about 45usd. However since the announcement they are sold out everywhere. I did a side by side with 2014 thomas h handy last night and this bottle holds it's own.
Just picked one up for $70! Not sure if it's a newer batch or if it has just been hiding out in the Canadian whiskey section for a year, but I'm stoked either way.
I get Apple pie type flavors from this, like vanilla and cinnamon. Hint of apple cider in aftertaste; so complex and like no other rye ive ever had. Amazing stuff
The Northern Harvest Rye by Crown Royal that Jim Murray picked created so much hype here in Canada. I live in a small town of 13,000 people, just south of Toronto, and the hype at that time around that whiskey was CRAZY! It got the younger beer drinkers looking towards whiskey as a cool new thing to try, and it worked. I'm 40 years old, had never bought a nice bottle of whiskey at that time, and now I have somewhere around 30. ( All the Lot 40 CS releases, the Lagavulins, the Bookers, and many other Bourbons and Scotches.) Our LCBO liquor stores can't keep any decent American or Scotch special release on the shelves now..... I bought 2 of these CS Alberta premiums. ;)
The second release just came out in Canada today, 132 proof. I got the last bottle at my local store at 10am. $60 Canadian. Can’t wait to try it.
Congrats and enjoy!
This is the first year they released their own cask strength. 2019 release. Alberta Premium from ADL (Beam Suntory) considered MGP of the north. Besides WP, they supply Barrell Spirits, Cooper Spirits (Hochstaders and Lock Stock & Barrel). Among others. Lot 40 is Hiram Walker. $65 CAD that is.
what is Lot 40? I just picked up a Lot 40 rye in the states. Love it.
So the one we're talking about, the cask strength, is a Canada only release. One of our favorite ryes of all time too.
@@BourbonJunkies The Lot 40 Cask Strength has had three releases (a 12 year old, 11 year old, and a NAS), all from Corby Distilleries "Northern Borders Rare Collection", The collection also includes a 21 year old Pike Creek (Speyside/European Oak/Oloroso barrel finish), a Gooderham and Worts (blended) and an older Wiser's (35 for the first 2 releases, 23 for the third).
Thanks for the video. I like the Alberta Premium CS. However, for my taste, the Lot 40 CS is a better bottle.
Lot 40 is a Hiram Walker product made in Windsor.
Its actually corbys.
I dont really care what jim murray says at this point honestly.
Seems like less people do each year. Especially after this year.
If it had a cool, antique-ey looking label like KY Owl, the demand would be OTT in "Murica.
The room where sap is boiled, at least in small VT places, is the sugar shack. Just picked up one of these today.
Yet another affordable dram thats impossible to find.. smh.. thanks for the review guys, at least i know its one to reach for if i get lucky. NOTE.... for you AB fans the church hill prensado is still my favorite. I bought two boxes in 2011 and have 8 left. If they are still smoking like the 2011’s you have got try them. Best in the lineup.
I love the prensados. I always keep some around
They use glacier water too.. one of my favorites!
For what it’s worth, the water source doesn’t really matter. Distillers use reverse-osmosis (purified) water then (sometimes) add back in minerals to return some taste to the water. So basically they could (and many do) use tap water and it would taste the same. Breweries do the same. No matter what the water source, it’s purified first.
You're welcome guys! I feel like the unoffical Canadian rye mule. I will get you a lot40 12yo yet.
Good call! That’s probably the best rye I’ve tried here in 🇨🇦.
7:16 you know how purple candy in the US is grape flavoured? Purple candy in Europe is (generally speaking...) blackcurrant flavoured.
Mind blown, the more you know.
This was readily available here for the longest time back in the winter, almost picked up a bottle of this a few times but could never pull the trigger on it, oh well.
Bottle reminds me of Listerine bottle. 😂, ejaculates... Haha. Whiskey and ejaculates never should be in same discussion
Don’t see what the hate on Jim Murray really is.
1) It’s his opinion
2) Did you try 2,000 wiskeys in a year to decide? (Not pointed at anyone in particular but once again to say it isn’t the best when no one has put in the work or effort he has....)
3) Taste is subjective and if the Bourbon Junkies were to try this wiskey 3 times a month they’d find different notes each time.
4) He tries to pick easy-ish to find and cheap wiskeys for the most part.
5) I have a full proof and found it to be unique as hell so I can see why it would be near the top
6) Be lucky he finds bourbons unique enough to be on the list, he tries so many and to have some state side whiskeys on there, that’s something to be proud of.
But alas; haters gon hate 🤷♂️
Rye pancake?!? Lol...agree...bleh! But the pour sounds interesting! (@ihateweedwackers)
Y'all got to teach Matt how to light a cigar. 😂😂😂
I think he nailed it
@@BourbonJunkies 😂😂😂
OK. So now, having watched the whole video...
My only qualification is that I'm an Albertan who loves whiskey. Glad to see this being reviewed here. I was lucky enough to grab a backup bottle of this on the day it was named Whisky (CAD spelling lol) of the Year. I don't agree with the pick, but I do agree that it is CRAZY value for the money. It costs (before last week), $60 CAD which is insane. The longer you let it breath, the more it tastes like an apricot bomb. This is nothing like Lot 40 Cask Strength, which is apparently great (not tasted yet), but for very different reasons.
Regardless of where it was placed, this is a shining example, along with Lot 40, J.P. Wiser's special releases and many others that truly show what good Canadian whisky is. I would love to see Alberta Distilleries put out a 10 or 12 year cask strength, single barrel version of this stuff some day. You have to think that they have something very special planned for their next limited release :-).
Finally, I have to say that even though the bottle from Alberta Premium always gets a knock, take heart in the fact that the cheap packaging and lack of marketing is what makes AP so darn cheap from an economic perspective. The 80 proof version, at not even 30 CAD is still way better than Crown Royal, which is more expensive than that (bottling, marketing etc.). It's young, yes, but is a minimum of three years, 100% rye and comes from one of the best rye distilleries in the world. That will always have a place on my shelf (along with Canadian Club 100% rye, also 80 Proof).
I think Masterson's sources from ADL as well along with many other distilleries that dare not disclose ;-)
Cheers Guys!
Paul
That Canadian Club 100% rye is fantastic in an old fashioned. And dirt cheap. I'm just outside Calgary, living in Cochrane
Adam Logan I wish CC 100% Rye and AP Rye could be 10 proof points higher like the entry level versions of Jack Daniels, Dickel and Jim Beam ryes.
I’m in the Edmonton region.
My state store here in PA has had cases of this stuff on display for the last month at $69.99. I keep thinking about picking one up.
$29.99 at Binny's Beverage Depot in Illinois.
I have a WhistlePig store pick that is Alberta rye. Freaking delicious, like a spicy Juicy Fruit gum. Easily top 5 in my collection, which is not that big lol!
55 CND in Saskatchewan Canada. 😁
Lot 40 is a JP Wisers product...distilled in Windsor Ontario....
Sean with the little guns at the end. Pew, pew pew. $70 in the Buckeye State.
Just picked up a bottle of this winters release. I’d be interested to see this blinded with some other rues to see how it holds up.
I get a lot of cloves on the nose and palate. Love this whisky...grabbed 3 bottles when it came out in late 2019.
Thanks for the review!
P.S. this whisky did not ejaculate for me.
Shit it didn't for us either, still pretty dang good for $60
Would love to see the Stagg Jr Batch 14 review and also in a blind with batch 12, 13 and GTS 2019.
13 won that blind
It took me 34 years to drink bourbon again... it will be a little longer for rye
Jim MurrAAy gives this whiskey of the year...MEH. BJs give this bottle an A and this bottle is sold out in North 'Merica.
Lol if only we had pull like that.
Makes me happy I found this for $76 yesterday. Planning to open tomorrow.
Have heard the american batches have been really solid!
Screw top? Screw that....
I KNEW you were going to say that quite from Jim somewhere in this video lol.
It shook me in a bad way
Gotta keep my eye put for the Alberty!
It’s a nice pour but Wilderness Trail is still my go to. Even beats out Pikesville. Have you guys tried it yet??
I need a cold shower now...and some mouthwash.
RIP John Dunsworth
Awesome, got it from MarketView Liquors $29.99 fantastic
Good episode guys!!!
Is this better than RB rye?
Screw top!
Same bottle as the black label stuff, which retails at like 17$ CAD
Dan's face was priceless! I almost spit out my coffee.
5:54 Maple syrple.
Great Review.....I Still Go for The WP 10yr. Gives me a Spicy Mouth Watering Drink Which I Love even With All The Trash Talk out there about The Price....Cheers Junkie's....
Paid retail for this. First time seeing it on the shelf. I may double up if they release with five year gaps. As an aside I had a bottle of 86 proof lot 40 and it was terrible. On my list of worst rye' s ever .
I just bought this in Saskatchewan for $65CAD. Hard to find.
Which one did you guys like more? Alberta premium cask strength or Lot 40 cask strength? Btw which year is your lot 40 cask strength?
I think we have the 11 year which was 2019, but I'm not 100% on that. I would also have to drink then side by side to answer for sure. My gut says lot 40
Bourbon Junkies i have the 2019 edition NAS finished in french oak
So yours must be 2018, it should say 11 years on the front bottle if youre unsure 👍🏽
Man I didn't think we've had that bottle that long but yea that checks out
You need to put the line Dan says, "I'm sexually confused" on loop..... LOLOL
That Valentine hoodie, tho.
Got a bottle of this on sale at my local liquor store for $46!
Dan, you can have all the brunettes and I'll take all the gingers
Just bought some in VA. Will see if i like it or not maybe tonight...
Love yr show ! THis APCS is everything to everyone, and very different nose to different drinkers... Yes, SOLD OUT in 6 hours in Canada/Ontario right after JM comments (65$CAD = 45$USD). - - - likely Batch 2 for late 2020 or early 2021 . . .
Happens, he drove up 1792 full proof a lot when he put it number 1 also
I think this is the part where I toot my horn about my favorite IB, Mammoth. If you're in MI you can get a 16-Year cask strength sourced from Alberta for $90. nuff said.
anyone knows where I can get this Whiskey? Albert Premium....? or better some website saling this?
I checked around. all sold out.
It apparently cleared shortly after being named by him Murray
@Bourbon Junkies what was that feeling like? You read the announcement and.... "holy crap. I think we have a bottle of that just sitting on a shelf in the s̶h̶a̶c̶k̶ studio"
I imagine that made your whole day.
We didn't even review it when we got it because no one has heard of it
How would you guys compare it to Whistle Pig 10 year single barrel? It sounds like WhistlePig a bit more traditional with its notes of dill.
Better than WP 10
I'm surprised yall haven't reviewed John J Bowman. It won best bourbon in the country back to back (2017 2018 I believe ) would love to hear your review
We love the single barrel quite a bit actually. It's one we try and always keep a bottle of around
@@BourbonJunkies ayyy thanks for the reply! Glad to hear y'all enjoy it too!
Just picked up a bottle of this to compare with my lot 40 havent opened up yet was debating on buying a second bottle to gift or not
my bottle is at 66%
I absolutely loved the Alberta dark rye. How does this compare
Good stuff Eh? Its a apricot bomb to me.
caNAYdia
Figured I'd get more shit about that honestly
@@BourbonJunkies i know plenty of canadians that pronounce it that way haha
In this episode, the Junkies learn that professional people can put the word "ejaculate" in published papers without being fired.
EDIT: After reading a few more articles from The Whiskey Bible, Jim Murray should not be considered a professional.
Read a lot of technical papers in my life. Never came across wording like that in my life.
@@BourbonJunkies I've never seen it in an article written after 1950, but there are always exceptions!
Dan the fruit Somm 😂
Food* you don't get husky by not eating
Canadian Club? Isn't that the other big rye that Alberta makes?
I believe you're right!
Can confirm sold out so fast in Canada and the distributors pulled all their warehouse cases to export.
I mean you have to for the #1 whiskey
So you had this bottle in your collection before the Murray announcement? Well played.
Yea we got one when they dropped in 2019
LOL... the look after, "i'm not a ginger man"... too good.
Sugar shack
That is a disturbing choice of words.
I read it like 4 times thinking I read it wrong each time
Tried the lot 40, it sucks. this one is oookay. Wouldn't rave about it though
Lot 40 or lot 40 cask? The cask is what we love
@@BourbonJunkies Lot 40, I believe. After that first one put me off it, I found CC to be on par with it and only used it for mixing till gone and haven't tried any others to this point. I have the Alberta Premium and so far nothing really special about it to my taste anyway.
Dan Elon Somm!
Jesus Jim has totally lost it.
That's some potent Rye.
MWND not a special Rye at $100?
It is for Dan
Not sure right now is the best time to praise or associate anything with Jim Murray right now. Other than that, great vid guys.
Yea apparently he's getting some kick back, meh were just here for the whiskey, cheers!
@@BourbonJunkies You guys seem like good folk, so I won't hold it against you. Figured I'd at least get some info on this rye that I'll probably never see, lol. Cheers.
Sean try to buy youth sizes in your hoodies, better fit for you!
They're more comfortable this way!
Can you still get this locally?
We never could, had to source this.
Was hoping somebody would do this one
Well we didn't know we had the whiskey of the year on our camera
How did you get that bottle?
Bought it in 2019
Sean’s hood was way too distracting in this video.
Boo this man
Boo
You guys boil a lot of sap do you?
Actually my brother does every year, me not so much
Have you guys had the knob creek cask strength it runs at 65
You talking their cask strength rye? I think it's like 70 where we're at. We like it a lot also.
Bourbon Junkies yep that’s the one it is so good!
I just got a 2018 Knob Creek Cask Strength Rye too.
Born and raised Albertan here. Haven’t had this representation of alberta premium. But the everyday black label alberta premium is what you drink when you’re homeless
Ridiculous comment. I too live in Alberta; for nearly 50 years. AP 100% rye is a solid 100% rye whisky and holds it’s own in taste. You realize it is such a quality product that Whistle Pig (and other bottlers) ships tank loads of it to place in there casks and then age it to sell it for $80 + Can. Best $20-23 one could spend on a rye whisky. Owned by Suntory which makes some other incredible alcoholic beverages. The AP Cask Strength takes the taste to another level of incredible. I kid you not.
Great video. Totally cracked me up. But I cannot and will not support anything with Jim Murray’s name attached to it.
We're not for him. Just covering the "#1 whiskey in the world"
Having our son in November and looking for a great easy drinking whiskey to celebrate his birth
Well you can always try and hunt for a Blanton's with his dump date. That is asking as he's not born on a Sunday.
@@BourbonJunkies yeah got to hunt for it here in Austin texas theres alot of mom and pops stores here... Thanks guys... love the channel and the content I try not missing a show...
There can’t be a different “best whiskey in the world” every year. Did last year’s best whiskey get worse?
Of course there can. Things don't stagnate. The Model T used to be the best car in the world. Is it still?
Jim Murray? LOL....does anyone still listen to that guy?
Enough that he still sells books I guess
People who believe in free speech 😉
Definitely a spicier rye than lot 40. But in my opinion it has one of the best finishes of any rye I've had. It just go's on and on and on
I like my whiskey like I like my intercourse. I want to be the only one who...
