  • A strong Canadian Rye goes head-to-head with a previous (and wildly different) barrel pick of the "same" whiskey's new batch.
    Big thanks to Richard Amiro for the bottle. Cheers ya M.B.!

    Here's a long story: When I moved into my apartment (first time living on my own) I got a globe bar and a leather recliner to sit and read and drink like the old man I was on my way to becoming lol I only had mixer alcohols like Kahlua/Amaretto/Southern Comfort etc... and wanted to get a bottle of some strong manly whiskey. My only experience drinking whiskey previously was Jack Daniel's. So I picked up a bottle of Wild Turkey 84 proof. Tried it neat, and it burned and was seriously unpleasant. Tried it with a big ole ice cube... still unpleasant. Tried it watered down... gave up. So it sat in the globe for the next 5 years untouched. Until I got into cigars with my nephew and we wanted to smoke and have a glass of some nice bourbon together and we went halves on Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. Half way through the bottle and 2 months later we FINALLY smelled caramel!! It was a mind blowing experience! I started watching UA-cam videos about whiskey and fell down the rabbit hole... and now have 50 bottles. When my nephew comes over, we pour each other a little without the other knowing what it is and test and develop our senses. We are still beginners so we try to guess whisky/bourbon/scotch. Then for extra credit, we try to guess the bottle/brand. A few weeks ago, my nephew poured me a glass and I poured him one and as I smelled mine I described it as very light and mellow. Took a sip and said it went down very easy like it was watered down almost and wasnt sure what it was.... then he told me it was that original bottle of Wild Turkey!!! It blew my mind and made me so happy and proud to know how far I had come that I could describe something that was undrinkable when I first got it as light and almost fruity now. I was so happy... and so excited for the rest of this journey. It's going to take me at least a year to work my way through my collection... and in anticipation of my taste development, starting 2021, I started buying exclusively cask strength bottles, but I am not opening any until I have finished everything I have now. Thank you Rex and Dan and all the Magnificent Bastards for helping me on this journey! Cheers 👍

      Alberta distillers are a great group. As far as budget rye is concerned they're cream of the crop, and they can do legit high end stuff too. The cask strength is soooo good. Could be biased since I'm local, but really don't think they can be beat in the rye game.

      Canada does have a wierd 11:1 ratio rule. Meaning, with 11 parts whisky; distillers CAN add 1 part of another liquor. There was one that is 1 part mescal to 11 parts whisky. It doesn't happen all the time, but it CAN happen. I'm excited to try the 66% as I couldn't get my hands on the 65%

    I keep seeing people go on and on about this rye, I might have to see if I can pick a bottle up if it's not sold out across Ontario. Alberta Premium has always been like, a slight step over Canadian Club to me. Cheap Canadian Whisky that is bought pretty much exclusively to change how Coke tastes but isn't quite as medicinal as CC. But How To Drink was going on in a recent video about how well the AP Cask went in cocktails and if you non-rye guys are saying it's pretty good, sounds like something that might be right up my ally!

    • @BaddDukk
      @BaddDukk 3 роки тому +2

      I agree. CC is pretty much bar sink rye IMO and Alberta Premium is a minor step up - commiserating with the likes of 5Star and Golden Wedding. Mixer rye only. I would have to try a sample to believe that AP could up their game to neat status.

    I was searching (online) one of my local liquor stores for cask strength bourbons and this came up and when I went to UA-cam to find a review on it, and I found out that its a $60 bottle and the site listed it at $31.99, I searched other stores and every one of them had it listed for $69.99! I got their as quickly as I could and that ($31.99) was the price? the clerk that helped me said it was the last bottle and that "they" whoever they are said to drop the price and I told him if that's so, you're the only ones passing the savings on to your costumers everyone else has it for $69.99. He said Well then you better savor it because you most likely won't be getting another for that price. Mine is the newer bottle and its only 63.7% abv. still 127.4% for $31.99, can't wait to try it! Drink it how ever you enjoy it. Obviously you dont want to waste the money you spent so id suggest trying it with some coke or lemonade, or try to make an old fashioned even if you dont have the bitters the extra dilution and sugar might make it more appatising. It took me a while to like whisky but I work(ed) in a pub so would try different things, its just something that takes time to get use to and still cant pick out half the notes these guys can. What is the scotch you have? If you can try The Glenlivet Founds Reserve, its a fairly cheap single malt so shouldnt be as abrasive as the blended (obviously depends where you live to the price but if you can get it for £25/ your equivalent id say its worth the money and was one the of the first scotchs I enjoyed, now I find adding ice to it just makes it taste watery but maybe not a bad thing for you. Hope that helped at all.

    Between November and now, Alberta Distillers has been advertising this whisky as "award winning" on billboards here in Calgary, Alberta. They do not reference "What's his name" anywhere. But they acknowledge the award.....hmmmm......I still have half a bottle of the first release and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. I get bubble gum, dill and fake sweet. So not my favorite.

      Yeah they'll take the accolades that come along with the "award winning" but won't mention Murrays name because it is not politically correct, goofy eh

    Where did the "H" go from Herbal?

    • @SteveHupe
      @SteveHupe 3 роки тому

      It's a silent H in non-British dialects.

      Only time it’s pronounced is in the name Herb but not when referring to herbs or herbal flavors

    The boys dump all over Alberta Premium then drool over Whistlepig Rye. Whistlepig is Alberta Premium. It’s the same whiskey with a different finish. And sometimes, like with Whistlepig’s barrel releases, it’s literally identical.
    I don’t get it. And these two know they’re the same, which makes their criticism all the stranger. They’re not really criticizing Alberta Premium in this review the way they normally do, but compare this review to ANY Whistlepig review. C’mon.
