As a former hoarder in recovery. I've learned on my journey two styles that work for me. 1. The fire method. Which is, ask yourself if the house was on fire, would you try to save said item. 2. The mountain method. Which is, ask yourself if you had to carry said item up a mountain would you keep it. After asking myself those 2 questions, it has really helped me let go of so much stuff. I have a long journey ahead of me. Yet I am taking steps every day to simply my life and free my mind. My motto for this year is ," PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION. " 🐢 🏁 🏆 🏡 ❤️
What a great idea! Thank you. Unfortunately I have to run out from fire with interview/ funeral clothes, otherwise I would only keep athletic clothes:))
Can I ask how you have begun to find recovery and progress?? My family member needs help and can't find any local therapists it seems and hoarding seems to be a much more difficult problem people have and few understand it
@@letsuseourbrains What helped me a lot is watching hoarder vids on UA-cam-the ones with therapists involved and really listening to the reasons why some people hoard for some insight into myself. Watching Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners helped too because they help a lot of hoarders and themselves; people that are at both ends of the spectrum. But, you have to watch a lot of these shows, recognise you have a problem and want to change. It was slow going for me but now my decluttering muscles are getting stronger by the week. If the person is keeping out and out trash, bad food that's a whole different level that needs long term professional help. Ask a primary care Doc to make a referral is all I can think of at the moment.
I wanted to do this with books too, but then i started to miss it. So i discovered great reselling apps! So now I will buy used books and resell them again 💪 or u could also go to a library. Unfortunately in my area we don't have a good one.
People worry so much about recycling and saving the planet, but the best way to save the planet is to stop buying so much stuff. Just the packaging alone around new products contribute to so much waste.
Even if we stop consuming, they won't stop packaging. They'll lower prices/ship it away other countries without regulations will buy it and it'll end up in our oceans/etc. The best way is to dial back and be specific about what we want in as few groups as possible.
@@MARIE-yl8ymI think this is true, short-term, but ultimately the decreased demand and profits would result in reductions in production. Our strongest votes are with our dollars, and your point about mindful buying is well-taken.
When I became an aunt, I bought my niece so much stuff, I did go overboard but we were all so excited, we all went overboard honestly. After 1 year, her room was so cluttered with toys, books and clothes that my sister decided to declutter, I realized that I spent so much money for such little use, while my niece would find kitchen silicone spoons more exciting than her own toys, she outgrew the clothes. It was an eye opening to me.
About books: As a former school librarian, books are a HUGE part of my life, but I own very few. Here's my plug for using your public library! Even if you don't live near one, most libraries make book checkout online simple. Books that I DO buy get passed along to friends to enjoy and they in turn, pass them onto others. Even the books I highlight, mark up or make notes in the margin get passed on. I know I am always curious about what others found useful, noteworthy or inspiring. It's a secret book club of sorts. ;) Thanks for your posts-I always find them motivating and inspiring!
I have one small bookcase with my very favorite books and a few kids books ( as a sentimental value from my kids young years). I will not spill over those boundaries. I have a couple book apps on my phone to read and to listen to books, one of which is a free app from the local library. So nice to listen to books, clean, kayak, or go for a walk!
I love my library! They can do interlibrary loans if another location in my province owns it, they have purchased all my suggestions for recent publications, and I've just recently discovered e-books (I was skeptical) which I love reading in bed (being pregnant- on my side and in the dark if I can't sleep without fumbling with a book and light). I only purchase books that I've already read, loved, and know I will re-read.
Same! I love reading, but I get all of my books from the local library. If it’s a book I love and would want to read again, I go ahead and purchase it.
I have recently retired. The first thing I did was start the declutter process. It's amazing how much stuff we accumulate and how much money we waste. I've even started making my own bread. I can make 5 loaves for the price of 1 store bought, and I find the process very relaxing.
I have been learning over the past three years that this youtube channel is one of about three channels that actually add value to my life, so I will continue watching. I’ve discovered that I would much rather live my own life than watching other people live theirs. There’s just way too much advice and “how to” information put out by moms and others on youtube that it creates a lot of anxiety snd stress to try and do all the cool things everyone else is doing. So goodbye to youtube, minus the 2-3 channels that have actually helped me to improve my own life, this being one.
So thanks Dawn for producing something that is not leading me to slowly waste away the precious hours of my life listening to someone else live their life out loud.
For books, don’t forget to check your local libraries! You can hold the physical book without adding to your home inventory. And if they don’t have the book you want in their catalog, they can usually borrow it from another library or order it for you.
The problem is, instead of buying every book I’m interested in, I’m getting it from the library, and since there are due dates, I’m only reading library books and not touching the 800 I own but haven’t read yet! 😂😂
I did the same thing and went on a do not buy clothes and shoes for 3 months! I actually made it 5 months “no buy” until I decided to buy a couple of sundresses because it was over 100 degrees for a couple of months and the sundresses were cooler. I actually made it 5 months with “no buy” not only for clothes and shoes, for plants, too! I love plants and I propagate my own succulents and pathos. So I got my new plants from ones I already had and will not buy any until the end of September, when we replace the annuals (that are sometimes perennials here) with succlent perineals, that grow well in Florida. They survive our usually mild winters and also the 100 plus temps we sometimes get in the summer. You know you have acclimated to Florida when it’s 90 outside and you enjoy the breeze in the chairs under the live oak trees with a Diet Dr Pepper . LOL
Dawn, every time you talk about kid’s toys it makes my soul SING! As a teacher for over 30 years, I 100% agree. The science is well documented that nature and simple materials boost creativity and higher thinking skills. Scissors, paper, tape, paints, crayons, nature items and recyclables are all they need and usually want. Cardboard boxes are the BEST!
Even as a cook at home, I find myself becoming more creative with few same old ingredients instead of buying whole bunch of ingredients to make a dish from a fancy recipe. I started using nature to decorate every season that I can just compost at the end of the season, so that I don't have to store anything for the next year. I am thankful for Dawn & viewers by your comments have helped me to be able to live a clutter free and spacious living in a very small house with my family. Each one of us really appreciates the space we share and we have learned to be more respectful to each other by cleaning after our own mess and putting things away after the use. Thank you again for sharing!!!
Yeah but toy toys are also engaging creativity and play in ways paper and pencils cannot. We’ve all been kids - so which would you have rather had for Christmas? That barbie airplane to play vacation with your other Barbie’s or crayons and a coloring book…hmm I can only imaging which was more fun when I was a kid…
@@TheNerdistheWord The point is that having less toys makes them more valuable to you. When you have a mountain of toys they lose whatever appeal they might have had. The bulk of your children’s possessions should be the open ended things like blocks, books, and creative materials, and not an insane amount of those either, too much and they only see a pile. Less is more!
Yes. I can attest that the times I was most creative as a kid was when I didn't have any and every toy at my disposal. I remember making a guitar out of a box, paper towel tube, and rubber bands. I got overwhelemed when I had too many options. Giving kids the space to be creative is one of the best gifts you can give them. It leads to not only strengthened creative ability, but problem-solving ability as well as resourcefulness for the rest of their lives.
@@sl9906 i disagree. My son has his cars, tracks, books, stuffed animals and legos while my daughter has her play kitchen with different foods pots and pans, fridge, washing machine, play dentist set, Barbie’s, baby dolls and accessories, play makeup and jewelry, dress up clothes, stuffed animals, and books. They also play with some of each others toys. Now if they were a little older, probably much less as these toys are for quite young children and they really enjoy playing with everything they have. One day it’s cafe day, another it’s princesses and makeup or monster jam in the living room with a Lego DUPLO arena. They’re very creative and I’ve never heard them say they’re bored unless it’s a long car ride. Even then they entertain themselves quite well.
I’m 51 (and have been diagnosed with lupus for 30 years!!!) and used to LOVE cute, cheap shoes. Uuuggghhh!!! I’m paying for that now!! But, YES!! My husband says “Don’t skimp on shoes, sheets or underwear.” With this statement I fell more in love with him! 😂😂 Oh, we’ve been married for 30 years this August!! ❤
@@freyanoor6794 Congratulations!! And Happy Anniversary!! It’s so beautiful to see loving families make it this long!! God’s blessings on your family!!
Hi, Emily. My comment is a bit off-topic, but regarding Lupus: You may want to research a Supplement, called "Moducare". It's made from natural "Plant Sterols", that seem to help 'modulate' our Immune System (to calm down an 'over-active' one, or strengthen a weak one). It's been around, 20+ years...and I've seen reviews from people with Lupus, who say it really helps keep them stable. It healed my dog of a deadly Auto-Immune Disorder. I like to pass this information, to anyone who might find it helpful. Take care.
"It's more about the consistency of use not trying to find the miracle product" so good, Dawn! Thank you for the encouragement to use what we already have!!
After I retired and was at home more, I began using much less makeup and fancy cosmetics, lotions, perfumes etc. I reverted back to basics like Noxema, tinted Chapstick and Ivory bar soap etc. It saves lots money and hassle!
Thank you for this video. I’m soon to be 74 and am moving to a new home that is at least 1000 square feet smaller than the house I currently live in. I am purging as I pack - giving things away and just tossing it! It’s getting a lot easier than when I started!
Been there. I was fed a lot of guilt for selling (actually auctioning off) a lot of family heirlooms. I went from close to 3000 sq ft to 1000. My only regret is I didn’t get rid of more.
@@okaycola2for what it's worth, you could also say that the design of her kitchen is what speaks to her and brings her joy, without a care as to how someone else will perceive it.
Every time I need a reminder to live simply and/or declutter, your videos give me the perfect dose of motivation and a sense of calm. Thank you for your hard work in making these videos amidst your busy life as a mom, you make a difference in our lives.
Last year I started using the simple 1950s housewife skincare routine. I have only three skincare product: Pond’s cold cream to remove makeup, pears soap to wash my face, and Olay original daily moisturizer. That’s it. Simple skincare routines are easy to maintain. It also helps you to maintain a budget because you have a general idea of how much each product costs to replace.
Olay original has been the best moisturizer I've ever had. It got too expensive for a while so I tried some other things, went through them, and my skin likes the target brand Vaseline lotion... So for now, I'm using that. I use dove to wash my face, Neutrogena or store brand equivalent to remove makeup and lotion to moisturize. I find the less products on your skin, the better.
When I first began my official decluttering journey last November, I made a list of all the things I like to buy: notebooks, pens, mud masks, cotton yarn, mini skeins of yarn, etc. And then I counted up what I already owned. That was eye-opening to say the least. I keep the list in my planner and a picture on my phone to remind myself that I'm in need of Nothing!
I recently got rid of Amazon Prime and have not missed it once. I felt that amazon was becoming the impulse aisle of the internet and I can usually find what I need at walmart or target. And if I don’t find myself rushing to get it within 48 hours then that tells me I didn’t really need it.
I would get rid of it except I hate to drag two kids out to get stuff and I have to go to the next town to shop. There are some things I can’t get local I need from Amazon. That would save a lot of money tho. I was thinking of something else today that I could cancel and now I don’t remember!
@Rita Dyer yes, I don't want to drag my 3yr old and 6mos old out. Plus I don't like walking through a store looking for something I may not find. Amazon is easy and I'll do Walmart & target drive up. Generally stuff sits in my carts for a bit. If it's something I TRULY need, I purchase right away.
I'm doing the same thing as you -- using up all of my skin care products, fancy lotions, hair products, etc. that I've collected over many years. It feels so awesome to use one up and then recycle the bottle! And, no $$ out the window this year or maybe longer (: buying that stuff. You're a great motivator, and your videos are fun to watch -- thanks!
Last year I did a no-buy year for products (shampoo, lotions, soaps, laundry detergents, floor cleaners) and I used them all up. FANTASTIC FEELING! My bathroom is so more minimal now and my cleaning products hardly take up room at all. This year I am doing a no buying year again - clothes and books. Those are 2 areas where my consumption has really gotten out of control. Although I love the thought of supporting authors I have too many books i purchased last year and didn't read. So I am going to go thru all those and read them and then I have re-newed my commitment to use the library. All of these are great Dawn. Great video!
I use old towels to clean with & they work really well for everything. I've also started an inventory for all my makeup, shampoo, conditioner, skincare so when I feel like I want to buy something I'm reminded how much I already have. Long story long, this year is a low buy year for me so I can use up as much as possible.
My grandmother's mantra. In the era before anyone knew what a mantra was. Our ancestors made due. They would be appalled at our overindulgences and materialism.
Our parents weee much better at that and they had retirement money. We need to remember that. Would you rather live comfortably in your 70’s or have cute decor and clothes in your thirties 😂
A note on Montessori toys: I heard somewhere that Maria Montessori, the creator of the Montessori method, developed her method while serving the poorest children in her community. You don’t have to shell out for fancy Montessori toys to do the Montessori method. The families that she helped wouldn’t have been able to do so.
Exactly. And Montessori does not equal wood. Many Montessori materials are made of other materials; some Montessori are literally gathered from around the home or from outside. Unfortunately it's a prevalent notion that Montessori and wood are synonymous.
@@JessicaWelshRottman it’s not that it has to be wood. It’s that you need to use natural materials as much as possible. It could be metal, wood, or any other natural material.
My MIL owns a Montessori school in Haiti (700 kids) 😊. She does buy some stuff in the US but most of it, whe has the kids make by following a blue print. They are sometimes helped by a carpenter but they create what they need.
I wanted to encourage public library also. I read ALOT and this is a great way to save money and interact with the community. My grandkids go with me and love it!!!!! There is so much there.
I just entered my 30s and feel super cluttered in my home, I've just now started to curate my home and simplify it. When my home is clean and tidy I can think better all the caos just makes me think of the caos in front of me. Thank you so much for the tips. New subscriber!
This is my year of using stuff up while decluttering. I have eaten most of the food in my freezer. Almost done with another serum. I am a product junky, and I have finally realized I don't go through stuff before it gets bad. Additionally, I am in the same situation you are, Dawn. I think it is all fine (enough), but I have yet to find a holy grail item. I am a lot older than you, so I need to stop expecting a huge change--the damage is long since done.
I am trying to clear out my freezer as well ☺️. I was tempted last week to buy a new face cream that was recommended by a you tuber, but I decided to wait until I am finishing my current one.👍😊
The craft supply tip is SO helpful! You mentioned that maybe 6 months ago and how it needed to be manageable. So hard as homeschool moms! So I threw away all the crayons. Hundreds. And all the colored pencils. I just started fresh. Probably not most cost effective but I needed to start over. So now each of my kiddos has one mason jar of colored pencils and one mason jar of crayons. At first there were lots of tears but now they love it! They actually use one at a time and put it in the jar! We used to have crayons and colored pencils everywhere!!! It’s been a game changer for us, and I’m thankful for your advice with that!
Since decluttering a bunch I’m buying better quality instead. I LOVE my Birkenstocks and kept buying cheap slippers (I work from home) - I finally decided to spend the money on the Birkenstock slippers as I’m not spending so much money anymore and I’m very very glad I did, no more foot pain. Declutter and downsize so you can buy less and better quality
I use to buy Target slippers which didn't last more than a year. Finally bought Ugg slippers on sale which are going on several years old and still look good!
So glad to hear you say no to microfiber cloths!! I started eliminating plastic from my life a year ago and switched to 100% organic cotton cleaning cloths! Polyester clothing also has to go. It’s the new plastic bottle.
You know the fluff/lint in the dryer vent? Well the dryer isn’t the only place that sees the plastic. The water lines that discharge to your water plant also see your plastic. The big clumps get filtered out BUT micro clothes have micro particles that pass into the “clean water.”
The craft supplies. 🙌 My daughter is 5, extremely crafty, and we homeschool. At Christmas we were blessed (and bombarded) with LOADS of craft supplies. I ended up condensing it way down, putting some in one nice sized basket. The rest is in a big storage container in our basement. It's worked out lovely. I've had to go downstairs and refill her craft basket a few times already, but it is so much easier for her to be responsible for her craft supplies. And I'm not having to pick up millions of tiny things all day. Win win!! 🥰
Dawn, your video is spot on with my declutter goals for this year. Your list of items not to buy is what I’m following too. Yes I agree as we get older better shoes are a must. Downsides shoes which was terrific. Love your idea to keep socks in the laundry room. Hoping to get cubbies or bins for that this year. That will free up a drawer in my dresser. I also stopped buying stuff in twos. My Mom started that many moons ago. Now I put a stop to it. Buy what you need only. Home decor decorating doesn’t cut it for me either, but what has taken place more is putting up photos of my family, only on walls. Not on end tables. Too much clutter and dusting to deal with. When I shop we do “pass or get” near the end of shopping, by the time I get to the register I feel better impulse buys got left behind. Keep rollin out these highly effective videos. Just wondering have you thought of doing segment videos on how to tackle being a minimalist etc when you have ADHD. An area that’s challenging to our family.. just wondering if you have any amazing tips to help.
I have realized something amazing , as I have been decluttering my wardrobe . I’ve been wearing more of my stuff and I’ve been getting compliments ❤️ it amazes me, I love getting dressed everyday now
Pam here….biggest thing that helped in kitchen was getting rid of the gas stove and all those ridiculous grates!! I just got an induction cook top stove, which has convection oven with air frying. $1100. Induction glass top, no food burns on. If something spills over, lift pan, wipe with wet rag…burner is NOT hot…then continue cooking. I am legally blind and not having to worry about FIRE is HUGE and it is so much easier to clean and maintain
I did the same thing. Hated the grates and gas smell. Love my induction. Cooks quickly and can be controlled like gas. Easy to clean and much safer. Can be used as extra counter space too
Thank you for your inspiring videos, I also love growing living plants and had plenty of them at one point, but when I discovered that I could grow food instead, I re-homed my plants. Now I grow greens and herbs in my house and it’s a Win Win! My absolute favourite is my sweet potato vining plant which is where I get my slips from in the spring and transfer them outside for the summer to get my harvest. 🥗✌️🌏
I recently started cleaning for a family. The sheer amount of cleaners they have is astounding. They have a specific cleaner for counters, one for the tub, one for the fridge...so far they love my work and haven't realized I only use one or two. Easily a year's worth or more, but it only looks like 5-8 bottles under each sink and in each closet.
To be honest i kept waiting for the plug of whatever product yu were sponsored by but was pleasantly surprised when i found your message was genuine. Of course you are still likely getting some sort of revenue from these videos, but experts in their field to still deserve pay and that expertise you share is the product. Expertise that will be sustainable to "purchase" (via views) and that people feel more whole after viewing, therefore lowering the need for more consumption. It's beautiful. Thank you for sharing your expertise without trying to sell a product.
I almost didn’t watch the video based on the title, but who am I kidding?! I watched nearly EVERYTHING Dawn puts up. As always there was benefit. I love that it wasn’t just a list of “look at what I don’t buy”. There was a reason behind each item. Thanks for another video 💙
Dawn always has a message and an honest story! She is telling us to have a good conversation with ourselves and see if we can come up with a list like that.
What do you use for lighting in the room with no end tables to put lamps on? I find ceiling overhead lighting can be harsh. Boy have you opened my eyes with all kinds of doable solutions. I am in the process of Swedish Death cleaning. Liberating! Best advice ever-We do not need more storage systems. We need LESS stuff. Brilliant! Thank you for all your encouragement and practical advice. And the gift of not beating ourselves up instead giving ourselves forgiveness!
I love the idea of use up what we have. It makes us good stewards of what we have been blessed with. We have gotten rid of so many flat surfaces. No regrets!!! I absolutely love that book you are holding, Love Does! The older we get, we must invest in good shoes. Definitely agree, we had 4 kids and they played better and longer with fewer toys! This is such a great video, Dawn! ❤
I have put all other cleaning towels away when I bought a roll of bamboo paper towels. One roll has lasted for almost a year, and we have not used all the towels on the roll yet. You wash the towels. I keep the towels in a neat pile and I have a bin under the sink for the used towels. Here is why I LOVE bamboo paper towels and why it's totally worth having a pile of them instead of a roll of paper towels. Bamboo towels don't get stinky when you are using them as dishcloths. They dry things better than regular towels (including microfiber). They don't shed lint - they are super soft and can be used as washcloths. I also use bamboo make-up rounds. just like the paper towels they wash clean completely and don't stain at all. (I do rinse them right after I use them.) They seem to take off make-up completely with less face soap or micellar water. Just passing on my new love for bamboo cleaning cloths... Thanks for the encouragement and your willingness to be honest about the lessons that you have learned. Peace! Deb
You were so motivating today! Thank you! I've been getting flowers once a week because after Christmas my home looked so bare and blah. I love having flowers in the kitchen. The price adds up though! I like to read my kindle everyday. The hardest part of it is trying to remember the titles to share with friends. I don't buy cheap shoes anymore. I'm 64 years old. I can't wear heels any longer either. I think it's an age thing. Our feet take a beating every day, so they deserve something well fitted and supportive!
I buy long lasting flowers once a fortnight and spread them throughout the house in my kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and office. It’s so nice to have that pop of colour and reminder to breathe deep and enjoy the simple things in life. Sometimes I’ll wild harvest a bouquet on a walk through my neighbourhood 😉
I’m 55 and went to remote work in march 2020 until recently (just one day in office for now). I keep looking at the heels in my closet thinking I just don’t think I can do it again and I’ve never done very high heels - more kitten heel style. A few pairs are brand new!!
This is such a great topic! My kids love cardboard boxes, too! Last week one of my daughters saw a beautiful hotel from American Girl catalog, she saw the price and started to come up with ideas of how she can create one herself. It's been a week, her hotel looks amazing and she spends hours (with her siblings) of continuing creating and playing! I can tell from my experience that they would've never played for so many days and hours with store bought playhouse (as we are guilty of having them :-))!
We have an ice day today. Was just going to sit on the couch with the kids watching TV after lunch...your video popped up. Cleaned my whole kitchen. Thank you for the motivation!
I love your work, Dawn. I have to say again that hearing you say "I love you!" is such a joy and I love your old clips of your littlest one. The world can be heartless and depressing and your work makes me super happy.
Hi Dawn~ I have been binge-watching your shows to help me minimize/simplify. Just to share about Amazon purchases or any online orders, is to be Mindful of the delivery people. I spoke to someone who worked during the Holidays for Postal Service and he said a lot of workers call in sick then the back up workers have to “shoulder” their load and they were working until nighttime to finish. It was breaking their backs and it is super hard work. That’s why a lot of people quit. This completely changed my shopping impulses and needs. IF I need something, I would rather support our local shops and buy them in person. Additionally avoiding all the boxes and packaging materials have been great too. I look forward to your amazing ideas, tips and just your lightheartedness on things :)). ~Christine C.
This is my inner struggle as well with online delivery. I try to only order online if my regular in person shopping places don’t have the thing I’m looking for. I also like to find the item on Amazon, but then go to the sellers own website and see if I can buy from them directly.
I stopped nearly all online shopping, especially of heavy items, after seeing my UPS guy struggle with a box that probably weighed 50 pounds. It was the end of the day and he looked completely done in. I also hate dealing with the waste of packing material, so buying locally cuts down on that.
I just use simple vinegar and water for cleaning and threw away all my other stuff, and it works wonderfully. Only thing I use a product for is my wood furniture. Also - I think I was born a minimalist - I’ve always kept my house simple and it is definitely easy to take care of and clean and I really enjoy your little videos help to people that need it - it will change your life👍
Microfiber cloths, and all clothes made with synthetic fibers, break down during washing cycles. I use a GuppyFriend bag to wash the synthetic items I have. It’s simple to use and helps.
I recently downsized and got rid of SO MUCH stuff including everything you’ve mentioned. I’ve simplified everything and it is so liberating! Best thing I ever did!
So timely. Not only do these suggestions help keeping clutter at a minimum, it is also a mindset that is better for the environment. I watched and followed a video a few weeks ago. My bathroom is now amazing. You were so right about the reason we don’t put stuff away if it’s not easy. I am also using up everything I have before buying something new. Same with cleaning supplies. My kids are older but I just saw a piece on the news about borrowing clubs for toys. In particular this was for children 0-3. I think that is brilliant. I also no longer buy new books. I borrow most books and magazines on the Libby app (library app in Canada) as well as borrow from my local library. Finally, I do like to have some paperbacks on hand for if I’m camping or just bored, then I buy a few from the thrift store and donate them back when I’m done. Also, I never buy new glassware. In my household mugs and glasses get broken a lot. I will only buy replacements at thrift store. As I stare at my bag of yarn, I am reminded of your video on objects that we buy because we want to be someone we’re not. I have so many projects that I’ve started and never finished. I had lofty ideas that I would crochet baby blankets and knit hats for those in need. Nice idea, but that bag of yarn and needles makes me feel worse, like I’ve failed the people I wanted to help. I’m glad I found your channel.
I love used book stores. During this decluttering journey I'm on with my husband (and we homeschooled our kids) I'll bring two boxes or more loaded with books to the used bookstore and let myself get just one book (or. none) if they make me wait while they look through them. I always let them donate the ones they don't want which is a nice service of our local bookstore. It's a little reward and I'm getting rid of lots of books. We've donated probably 30 boxes of books in the last three years. Yup.
I love this! I follow a lot of people, and finally realized that every month they recommend new products and I can't keep up and have a minimal house! So now if I really like them, I just watch, and maybe save the products in my cart, but don't buy them until I need something new in that area.
The Fisher price mini slide, kid’s table/chairs, and the like can often be found for free or very cheaply second hand. They may be faded, but your toddler won’t care. I got both second hand for free and we got several years of use out of them for our four kiddos. When I was done with them, I put them on the lawn with a free sign and another family was thrilled to find them! So far, they have been used by at least 3 families, which is pretty cool! There’s some great items like that that are wonderful, but you’ll have them for a relatively short time. It’s great when they can be shared and passed from family to family!
I think this is your best episode ever! Helping us understand that what we bring into our home is the key to minimalism and how and why we do it. Thanks!
So glad to find this channel! I am so into the minimalist idea! As a momma of 4 under 6….I just can’t and don’t want to keep up! 😫 I love the simplicity of your home. No pressure to buy and consume more!
Yes! I’m following you for this journey of not buying more of these things (I’m guilty!). As Christian’s, it’s important not to get into the fear based hoarder mindset and also to be grateful for what we ALREADY have.
@@ChristysChannelYall Yes 🙌 I do this too and I love doing it! I remember feeling so blessed when I would find something at the thrift store that I needed and it was in great condition. I love paying it forward 💕
Excellent video. I have also reached similar conclusions over the last few years but I really admire how you have been able to put it out there so eloquently and well balanced.
Always appreciate your non judgmental message! You inspire me to make small steps everyday. And thank you for the information about microfiber! I was just about to buy more.
I giggled about the skin care routine. I get compliments on my skin. I’m 62. For most of my life it was just soap and water. Now it’s cetaphil(cheap at the grocery or drugstore) and lubraderm for moisture.
I'm so glad you are saying "no thank you" to micro cloths. They are sooooo bad for the environment. Lots of articles out there about the damage they do. I've been going thru as well... using up what we have before "possibly" buying more. I'm a big reader.... I took my Amazon wishlist and compared it to the local library database. I can get about 80% of my wish list at the library.
@@miriamr2651 Cotton / Terry cloth. I get a pack of washcloths for just a couple of $ and use those. I also use old cotton dishtowels and cut up old cotton pillowcases/t-shirts.
I'm right there with you regarding cleaning and personal care products! I have tons and I don't NEED anymore; but I'm like you where I get enticed to buy new based on the hype. So I'm putting all of that on hold! Thanks for the encouragement!
I've started my minimalist journey this last year and it's been very eye opening. I'm still dealing with my shopping addiction and the struggle is real!! I started off 2023 with a No Buy January. I made it, but it was tough. We are so programmed to buy anything at any time. Now for a No Buy February!! I think it will be easier (fingers crossed).
I buy outdoor pillows for throw pillows on my couch and kids' beds. They are usually inexpensive at Walmart and clean so easily. I am a Montessori teacher. Many "toys" marketed as "Montessori" aren't truely Montessori. Montessori materials were developed to work on certain skills, etc. Open-ended toys, recycled items for crafts, nature, and science-based items are wonderful for children. Cooking with your children, teaching your children to sew, and encouraging their independence. So Montessori!
I tell everyone about this channel and so many are joining me in our Minimal Mom fanclub 🥰 you're sweet and funny and down to earth, keep sharing Dawn you really are changing homes and lives 👍
It was sooooo hard to only buy the two candles I needed the other day and not over buy when they were on clearance at yankee candle... I also cleaned out all the beauty supplies and canceled all but one of my subscription boxes... it feels good!
Perfect timing, I just searched to see if your newest video was available to watch while doing my quick tidy up of the house during my baby's nap! 🙂 Love spending time decluttering watching your videos, Dawn. Thanks for posting.
I am almost 68 years old and I learn something new from you every time I watch!! You have the best attitude and I love how sometimes you seem to giggle at yourself. Keep up the good work!!
Side note on the microfiber...studies also SHOW...that the majority of the microplasrics are released in the dryer( but the same is true of alllllll fabrics not natural) so if you like the microfiber, just hang them to dry! And I applaud you for saying I'll use these up till they are no longer usable...and make a better choice next time!
Such a positive video. Ive been trying to be more minimalist since my eldest daughter was born 6 years ago. It's a lengthy process but it does make you feel so much more in control of everyday tasks 🙂 i really loved this video.
Looking for a silver lining…I had a health scare that put me in the hospital and rehab for a little over two months.I didn’t spend any money except on incidental items. I’m home now and have no desire to look on Amazon or browse ads or internet.I have very limited time on fb and I’m limiting UA-cam. I’m finding I like the silence and I get more done. Thank you for your GREAT ideas and being so relatable ❤
Yesterday I purchased $125 worth of storage containers and redid the disaster that was the cabinets in the Main bath. Declutter and contain is what I am embracing with my whole heart ❤️ Thank you for inspiring me to stay motivated. I feel lighter with each item I release. I am not allowing shame and guilt to guide this journey. I'm building the life I really want 🥰 In early December, when I was noting all the duplicates of cleaners and cosmetics, I vowed to not spend any money for at least 6 months.
We are on the same page. I only shop when there is a need and on my list. But I shop home 1st. I am at the point where I don't enjoy shopping. I am no longer held hostaged by it. I don't go to the store until my list has been checked and curated. Usually a month time. I have the control of it. Never going back to the mindless life. Always mindfull.
Dawn, I'm so thankful that I recently found your channel. I've been binge watching and have made so many wonderful and positive changes in my home. I actually love my space now and feel good being in it and not so stressed because of the overload of inventory. I'm just so very thankful and can't thank you enough for all that you share. It has made a huge difference! Blessings to you and your family!
I spent the weekend organizing my very small kitchen with extremely limited counter space and getting rid of items I no longer use. It is so freeing to let go and how uplifting I felt after.
I totally agree. I am 74 and Shoes are the one thing I spend a lot of money on. I typically have only 5 pair of shoes at a time. As a retired Montessori Teacher...Montessori materials are not designed for individual home use. They are designed to be used in a classroom by multiple children for decades. The classroom I taught in had materials that had been in the classroom for more than 20 years. Just saying. If people what to homeschool and use the Montessori method, there are several books that address that for a lot less.
Do you live alone? Once upon a time, everything fit neatly. Others are bringing their stuff into the space. Every time I clear a space, they think it’s available for their stuff (mugs, Yeties, reusable containers, and more. I need empty space!! Love the aesthetic of seeing all your peaceful clear counters.
I’ve been working on not buying a lot of these as well. As far as cleaning products go, when I ran out of toilet bowl cleaner I looked at my cleaning supplies and realized I had some Mr. Clean that I never use. So I have been cleaning my toilets with that and it works fine and the bathroom smells great. When it is gone, I’ll get the toilet bowl cleaner again and I won’t get the Mr. Clean.
Microfiber cloths...how bad they are depends in part on the weave. the nice tight weave ones (not the fuzzy top like the blue one at the beginning) don't shed as much. They last a long time. When they die--and you have to use them forever--I will put them in fabric recycling. The next best bet is 100% cotton/linen (because it's easier on the environment, won't shed plastic, and can decompose when it's dead--but not if you put it into the landfill).
DAWN! End table solution 💡💡if you need a place to set your drink, grab your bar stool, set it by the couch and bam! Multi purpose stool 🎉 our friends taught us this while we we’re having coffee at their house and we use it all the time now!! No end tables for me 😊
I’m usually good at not buying clothes. But, a couple weeks ago I bought a pair of clearanced pants that I still haven’t worn. If I had asked myself if I would pay full price for them, I’d have skipped them. Darn! Thank you for this new (to me) idea!
I’m so in on this. I have already removed so much stuff from my kitchen and I put them in time out. If I don’t use them they will be out the door. I have also been looking at my abundance of cleaning supplies and shampoos etc. we are definitely on the same page. I never thought about rugs but I see the advantage. ❤❤❤❤
Thank you Dawn! You hit on one of my ideas for the new year, use up what I have- especially lotions and hair products! You inspire me to keep decluttering!
Thanks Dawn. I'm doing the same, using what I've got. Even the food we have in our pantry and freezer. I decluttered my dresser and I have a couple drawers with only a couple items that I actually wear. I love opening those drawers and seeing space.
I can relate to too much craft supplies. I am currently boxing stuff up for donation. I am tired of feeling guilty when I look at it all. Thank you for your awesome videos. I will never be a minimalist but I am using lots of your ideas to declutter and make my life easier. ❤
Your do not buy list is almost exactly what mine was last year and I've done very well . Now, after a year, I feel like I need to go through and just get rid of the things I still have not used in a year. Another couple things that were on my do not buy list was clothes and 'anything that I already have at home'. This means don't stock up on anything anymore. It's just me and my husband here now and even if something is really cheap, I don't need to stock up and I don't need more of anything in my home. I have lost weight and ended up having to purchase a few pairs of jeans but otherwise, I have stuck to the plan and am seeing my storage areas starting to empty out. Such a good feeling.
Dawn is the bomb!!! Thank you for this video. I’m still in the early stages of decluttering. Although I’m like on my 2nd year. But this helps! Every little bit helps! THANK YOU ☺️ 🙏
So good!!! The realization hit me in the last few months, that I am a hoarder. 😱 So, this is my year to get rid of things we don’t use (but instead trip over every day). I have a toddler and a 9 month old and I want to enjoy them and my hubby more!! I already have 4 diaper boxes full on their way out the door, and am so excited to get more tips from you. Here’s to using our time more wisely and in a God-honouring way!!
I made the same commitment to myself as well! Toiletries, cleaning products, and pantry items. I want to go as long as possible before having to buy anything else. Going through my jewelry was SO DIFFICULT. but I did it. I still have way more than you, but I got real with myself and about what I've even worn in the last 3 years. I've also learned, I never ended up wearing bracelets and almost never the long necklaces. So now I make sure I don't buy them either. IF I buy something, it needs to serve a purpose or replace something (1 in 1 out) and is normally just earrings. My FANTASY self wore tons of jewelry. My REAL self mostly just wears earrings
I love this ❤ thank you for sharing. On a skincare note, I use a regular body moisturiser on my face. Even on my hair sometimes. It’s basically the same thing. I used to buy expensive creams, but honestly, it’s easier to keep one lotion on the sink & use it everywhere at once for me. If I have to use separate creams I tend to get lazy & skip it 😅
I'm 26 and I can't wear cheap shoes! After having my second baby this August I had to donate the last pair. I thought I really liked shoes, but I much prefer my trusty cowgirl(western) boots. I have two quality pairs that come standard with excellent arch supporting insoles and I don't have to tie laces 🤭 I also have a quality pair of winter boots because we live in very northern Wisconsin. I'll have to find something for summer that's a little more water friendly, but I'm not in a hurry.
Yes that is the same with me. Grew up with not having a lot and I hate shopping and with crime, scared of getting mugged and everything so I like to stock up.
I used to have to hold books in my hand to read them, but I love the fact that I can have several hundred on my tablet! The only book I have to have in my hand is my Bible, of course! Thanks so much for the great ideas and pointing out the many things we do not need to make us happy. So grateful for all you do Dawn 🦋🦋
I second the quality shoes department! 🙋🏼♀️ I've started having knee issues in my 30's. I got rid of all my old flats and got some really good supportive shoes. Makes all the difference in how your body feels. Thanks for the recommendation for house slippers. It's still something I need to get.
Thanks for another awesome video, Dawn! Your ideas are so helpful and you are such a "breath of fresh air", with your sunny personality and common sense approach to minimilism! 🤩
👏👏👏👏
Great way to process our inventory. Good luck in your journey.
I've put myself on a no buy challenge for clothes, shoes, beauty products and books for 3 months. And it's going so well. Month 1 completed! ☺
Awesome job 🎉
Good idea. I'm going to do this.
@@lauranewman564 Haha, I'm hoping to! ☺
Gotta try
I wanted to do this with books too, but then i started to miss it. So i discovered great reselling apps! So now I will buy used books and resell them again 💪 or u could also go to a library. Unfortunately in my area we don't have a good one.
People worry so much about recycling and saving the planet, but the best way to save the planet is to stop buying so much stuff. Just the packaging alone around new products contribute to so much waste.
No Kidding! I have felt guilty while looking at my kitchen trash can with ALL the packaging discarded into it.
I agree with you
Even if we stop consuming, they won't stop packaging.
Hopefully you get another niece , that you become Aunt one more time. 🌹
Yes! I get my “paper fix” for free and no more book mountains.
I love this! And YES to your local library! ❤❤❤
You are also saving your body from all the terrible chemicals found in most store bought breads. Win win.
@@happycook6737Except you don't unless the grains came from a pristine farm. They don't. 90% of that stuff is propaganda.
What’s the other 2 channels?
Good point! Am going through my channels right now and unsubscribing from any that do not add value.
So true! And I've noticed many You Tubers can't resist taking sponsor/product money and they end up practically being infomercials and selling stuff.
@@cynthiagibson1595 my question as well!
For books, don’t forget to check your local libraries! You can hold the physical book without adding to your home inventory. And if they don’t have the book you want in their catalog, they can usually borrow it from another library or order it for you.
Garage sales are great for books
Also charity shops….then take them back.
Sometimes when I get the shopping itch I go to the library and borrow a stack of books.

Hi, Emily. My comment is a bit off-topic, but regarding Lupus: You may want to research a Supplement, called "Moducare". It's made from natural "Plant Sterols", that seem to help 'modulate' our Immune System (to calm down an 'over-active' one,
or strengthen a weak one).
It's been around, 20+ years...and I've seen reviews from people with Lupus,
who say it really helps keep them stable. It healed my dog of a deadly Auto-Immune Disorder. I like to pass this information, to anyone who might find it helpful.
Take care.
@@DD-xf1yd THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kind words of encouragement!! I will certainly look into this supplement!

Same with me. Thank you.
I recently got rid of Amazon Prime and have not missed it once. I felt that amazon was becoming the impulse aisle of the internet and I can usually find what I need at walmart or target. And if I don’t find myself rushing to get it within 48 hours then that tells me I didn’t really need it.
I have convinced myself that online shopping takes weeks to arrive. It has really helped my online shopping.
Online shopping not for me. Too lazy to return items that don't work properly. Which is almost everything I've ordered.
Oh my gosh. I just realized I buy crap I don’t need too much on Amazon!!!! Thanks 😮
That's a cool idea to take a couple of categories for the year!
I use old towels to clean with & they work really well for everything.
I've also started an inventory for all my makeup, shampoo, conditioner, skincare so when I feel like I want to buy something I'm reminded how much I already have.
Long story long, this year is a low buy year for me so I can use up as much as possible.
An awesome phrase I have been taught and want to live by more regularly is "Use it up, wear it out, fix it up, or do without!"
Oh I love that!
My mom had that on the fridge growing up ❤️
Love this ❤
My grandmother's mantra.
I am using up products too especially makeup and body products. I get so excited when I've finished something 🤣
I def need to do the freezer thing. I tend to stack stuff on top then eat the newest ugh!
You can not wear it. But for me what I wear is what I wear. If it’s polyester I wear it.
I didn’t know microfibers were a problem for the environment. So sad. I won’t buy them again. 🥲
My daughter is 5, extremely crafty, and we homeschool.
Can be used as extra counter space too
Thank you for your inspiring videos, I also love growing living plants and had plenty of them at one point, but when I discovered that I could grow food instead, I
re-homed my plants. Now I grow greens and herbs in my house and it’s a Win Win! My absolute favourite is my sweet potato vining plant which is where I get my slips from in the spring and transfer them outside for the summer to get my harvest. 🥗✌️🌏
You grow the plant indoors year round. Tell me more
I recently started cleaning for a family.
I was just telling my husband that other people's lists just seem like brags. Dawn's is a tutorial and always thought provoking.
Folks use an E reader and help stop the destruction of our beautiful trees…… it makes perfect sense
Years ago, selling Avon, I learned the saying…” the magic is in the motion, not the potion”. So true! Consistency is key!…in most everything!
I like the term “ shop your shelves” in terms of anything you need for your home.
Yes!!
This is so true. Very wise words
Agree!! And I’m going to give away even some of the good stuff that I used to think I need to sell. I feel like I want to bless somebody with it.
I am learning this too right now
@@ChristysChannelYall Yes 🙌 I do this too and I love doing it!
I didn’t know microcloths weren’t good for the environment. What will or do you use in their place?
That's smart taking it one month at a time! Small steps so it's not overwhelming to think about a whole year.
yes, and the habit will get easier each month, I imagine! Go you!
Oh that makes me feel better. I don't own a dryer, so that is good news.
I'm building the life I really want 🥰
In early December, when I was noting all the duplicates of cleaners and cosmetics, I vowed to not spend any money for at least 6 months.
Oooh Dawn you have the BEST ideas ! And I still LOVE your laugh, your caring heart, brilliant mind, and your lovely home !
Such a feel good video! I’m literally in this position where I don’t buy stuff until I finish everything I have. ❤
I have two quality pairs that come standard with excellent arch supporting insoles and I don't have to tie laces 🤭
I also have a quality pair of winter boots because we live in very northern Wisconsin. I'll have to find something for summer that's a little more water friendly, but I'm not in a hurry.
Omg u are so right to use up what u have before buying more! I think i do this from an unfounded fear of running out of things.
Amen, the Bible!
A work of fiction….and not particularly well written 🙄
@@paulinecoburn181 The Bible is God's Word and was written under His inspiration. It is all truth.
I second the quality shoes department! 🙋🏼♀️ I've started having knee issues in my 30's. I got rid of all my old flats and got some really good supportive shoes. Makes all the difference in how your body feels. Thanks for the recommendation for house slippers. It's still something I need to get.
What was the brand of the slippers she said?! I couldn't catch it.
@@ifermac34 I think it was Dansko. Those are the ones I added to my wishlist anyways after watching this episode. ☺️
And we are so grateful for you, Dawn! You have helped me a great deal. Thank you!
As someone who is trying to maintain the motivation to keep our home simplified and SAVE MONEY!!!…I really enjoyed this video 😊 Thank you!
Thanks for another awesome video, Dawn! Your ideas are so helpful and you are such a "breath of fresh air", with your sunny personality and common sense approach to minimilism! 🤩
I don’t use paper plates or paper towels, I use cloth napkins wash with towels or hand towels. I have to have plants it so healing for you !!!
