Your advice is Spot On here, Shannon! I love the "Don't organize until you've decluttered" and "Don't purchase organizing bins until you've decluttered", the best. Great video!
Yes! What a good reminder, You can't organize clutter!! I also don't buy any containers until the space is decluttered and ready to be organized. If you aren't sure if something is really needed, put it in a box and if you don't reach for it in a month, then let it go. Excellent tips Shannon, you look extra pretty today 🌼
So true! Trying to organize your overload of stuff is insane! What we need to do is edit what we have (donate/toss it) before we organize what we actually do use and need on a weekly basis. Too many of us think that we just need more baskets and bins to store stuff, when in fact, we need less so everything has a designated space that’s not jammed up.
So great to hear someone say what I've been thinking about the open shelf trend. It looks modern but not practical if you are trying to make best use of space in the kitchen.
I love that you helped your mom let go and she helped you organize ❤️ You and mom are such an inspiration, I am a year and a half into my decluttering journey, and my mom gave me all the same grief, along with guilt (why don't I care about the family enough to keep tea cups from great grand whoever I never met? Won't my son feel unloved if his pictures aren't wallpapering my living room? Etc.) Now, I am urge/helping my mom declutter, as my parents' health declines and they are having mobility issues, their once organized over abundant pack-ratted home has become a near-hoarded danger. I look forward to watching more of your shared videos with your mom to prepare me to gently encourage my own mom to let go. (Thank your mom too for sharing her journey with us!)
I like how you put can goods in the back and clear bins in the front. Love your kitchen. Would like to see more kitchen organizations, my kitchen is small too and it’s tricky to do it right. Thanks for sharing your great ideas, Shannon!
Thank you for showing a realistic way to organize. It is impractical and time consuming to try to have the house look perfect ..organize for your life.
I've totally been there with the kids stuff and toy overwhelm. They've helped me declutter their things slowly over the last two years (while being careful about what we bring in) and now almost all their toys are in our former linen closet. Declutter first is usually the missing step for organization. Thanks for the inspiration the last few years 💖😍
I believe this is the best video I've ever seen on this topic. I love how you keep referencing your mother and helpful tips she taught you. And you are so right about knowing the layout and function of different areas of the home before just jumping in and halfway through it gets so frustrating and overwhelming because of lack of proper planning. I have wasted so much money on organizing gadgets, books, hooks, baskets, etc. that didn't work in the space, wrong size, and looked ugly and stupid in my house. Meanwhile, being no more organized than when I started. I am going to rewatch and make good notes, and of course, like and subscribe Thank you!
I just found your video so practical and reasonable! thank you for sharing Mom's wisdom too ☺️. here's my tip for you: who doesn't have those awful low kitchen cabinets you have to squat to get to, well, that bread maker for instance. I ran across Ana White's video on how easy it is to make a roll out shelf. I gave it a go and turned an almost unusable cabinet to a fabulous pantry with two roll out shelves. I had to make some adaptions but now I've learned something that I can use in the future. I just wanted to share that because when you're talking about organizing, a rollout shelf is a game changer. I hope you give it a try!
Thanks for sharing these great , practical tips. Yes, real life organizing, not social media type organizing. My style too girl. Agreed on a lot of these tips.
Good tips, Shannon. Some of them were aha's that I intuitively knew but had never tried to articulate. The one that surprised me was storing the bread machine up front because it is used more often than other items. It makes so much sense, but is counterintuitive for me. Thanks for another great video. You always share useful tips and strategies. Michele
We are absolutely loving the "normal" of our function for Cowgirls organization throughout our Retirement Ranch, no color coding lol just very lived in ❤ fantastic video
Thanks, for sharing "real" life organizing. I never wanted to spend the $ on containers, to decant my food. I thought I would rather spend the money on the food. Love the "pops" of wall art you have :)
I agree the food storage containers can be ridiculously expensive. I recently bought a used set of airtight containers off facebook marketplace for $2 a container from a women moving. Much cheaper than the $30 I saw for ONE container at target. just a suggestion if you want to look for a cheaper way to find some. I will say they profoundly improved the amount of cabinet space I now have.
I use the glass jars that come with food in! Macona coffee jars look pretty filled with teas, coffee, sugars on the open shelf, dry goods in nutella jars in the pantry, sprinkles in olive jars, spices in small crushed garlic jars. You can buy new metal screw lids from bulk food shops. 😊
I wound up switching my master bedroom and a smaller spare bedroom. It’s been great. My former huge walk-in custom closet makes a much better storage area and cleaning station. The room itself also is much more ideal for all my little DIY projects (often just some furniture refinishing or small paint projects etc). And now my new “little” bedroom is very cozy. I only keep a handful of clothes in the storage closet (my room closet is pretty small now lol) that aren’t worn near as often (fancier clothes for special occasions and a few off season hanging items). I find it now way more functional and efficient to just live my life like I want to. I couldn’t let go of a couple of antique chests, so now I have a cute way of storing cleaning rags, paint stuff, cleaning products, etc inside of these two chests I already had. It’s easy for me to just open a drawer to get what I need and I very much enjoy seeing the chests daily as I go about my business. So ya know. Didn’t need to go buy so many bins either Bcuz the chests are both sturdy and roomy and pleasant to look at. And I can let them be “half refinished” for as long as I want and go as slowly as I want with them while they are still being useful to me. I also half set up a living room nook space for a little cozy space to chill or a short term guest could actually sleep there and have a place for their clothing and personal effects. Pretty cool. I call it my “loft” space (it’s huge lol) Bcuz a guest could do everything in that room except food prep, laundry and shower (dining table and small extra cute fridge is also in that space, as my kitchen is too small for a table). I decided to go ahead and be “radical.” Now I’m glad I rolled with all my “weird” ideas. Lol.
I love this dose of realism. I never saw the need to dump ALL bulk foods into a special container when the containers some things come in are easier and more practical to use.
On the subject of containers, use what you have. I store the lids for my plastic containers in the largest containers and all like containers are stacked inside each other. My daughter also uses large containers that were used for their biscotti and they are now canisters for free! When decluttering and organizing, put drawer organizers in one place, then "shop your house" first. A comic note: when we bought our refrigerator, I took a turkey roaster and our 4 gallon stock pot with us. My husband was embarrassed, but the salesman thought I was a prepared shopper. This was important when you have a Sicilian husband who loves to cook for a crowd.
Hi Shannon this was really good advice - I definitely agree with you on all. Your home looks lovely & yes decanting everything I too think is a waste of time. Lol ❤ PS your Mom’s tips 👍🏼👏🏼
I used to carry a measuring tape and a notebook with measurements of windows (for curtains), closets, etc. with me when we built the house. Saved me a lot of heartache. I still made mistakes but I never thought of measuring for bins and trays. I usually used whatever fit, even plastic food containers or small jars I had. It doesn't look Pinterest perfect but they serve the purpose and were saved from the landfills. Love these tips.
Staying on task... I listen to audiobooks and podcasts. Audiobooks especially help keep me on task AND later when I am doing the same task again, I will remember whatever part of the book I was listening to the last time I did said task. Also, UA-cam has a ton of awesome life music playing channels... artists/playlists of course but also like classical music, jazz music, guitar music, etc... I love Tim Janis and Gently Peaceful... when my kids get home from school, I turn on Odd Eagle... the trick is, play the LIVE streams, not the previously recorded... LIVE streams will start w commercials but will not be interrupted by commercials.
This is absolutely one of the best videos on organizing I’ve watched. It’s realistic, and loaded with very usable tips. Thank you for not decanting everything. I need info that’s on the bags/boxes, like measurements, instructions, nutritional info, and brand. I have a small square retractable measuring tape, from a fabric store, in my purse. I also have a list of measurements in the “Notes” section of my phone. These both come in handy.
I started 6 yrs ago with decluttering and minimalism. I took it in steps and in order. 1 st month or two, i just kept focusing on what is trash. That's it. Keep getting it out. Then phase 2 for a fouple more months, what i dont need or use, all those went to donation. 3rd i focused on organizing what was left and along the way with that, i learned there was more to donate. I never bought any containers till i was at last phase. By then, i had already found in my decluttering just the amount of containers i need or want. 4. I stopped shopping! I would shop home 1st. See what i could repurpose. 5. I make a list of needs before i go to the store. I dont go to the store until i have had 6 weeks of curating that list. With thoughfulness, i was able to see that there was several items i truly did not need and could delete. 6. Be honest with you. You need to check yourself. The infuence is strong and real. Going shopping is like being in the garden of Eden, temptation is there, and you are having to debate in your mind about paying for something that you are attracted to, what ever it is that is in our heads. Its exhausting. I dont want the debate, i bring my curated list, get it and get out. I dont need the whisperings in my ear telling me I want it. I know i do, but I dont need it! Deceptive foolery. I dont like getting played like that when i know better.
I'm only a minute in but I need to jump down here and say that your boys' foam noodle duck tape light sabers are GENIUS!! And theyre not crazy long where they're breaking the house. I'm definitely making these with my 7 yr old son this year. He will love them!
Hey, Shannon. Those shelves do collect dust, and dust is the real culprit. 🤷🏻♀️ So I don't have those. Same with picture frames on the walls: depending on each house, they do tend to clutter a home. But in your case, being such a talented painter, your family home looks cozy and beautiful. 🖌❤
Thank you! I totally agree. As far as foods go I want to keep the nutrition information and ingredient list that is found on the packages. A common sense and tidy home is the goal. 😀
I have been at this for days....got rid of several bags of things with watching your videos inspired and then ......I go to Target like got into the loophole and bought some things lol good news definitely don't regret it but need to be more cautious cause now going to continue and try to have not a minimalist home I like things around me ha ha. But I am working towards all of the items to flow better together and every single room the same sort of color as a mainstream color and then just add in a little bit of unique items so I'm working towards that but yeah it doesn't help that I went shopping before I have completed this so yeah you're absolutely right
All great tips. I also carry a measuring tape in my purse, small compact one. I have a regular one in the glove box; curb side finds, thrift stores, in case you find that perfect piece of furniture. How's the garage coming? I was excited for that series. TY.
Hi Linda, It keeps raining here so we need a sunny day to pull everything out. But I have kept that one area clutter free and I will definitely have the garage videos coming very soon =)
I LOVE u Soooo much for this vid.💜💜 Seeing someone show their home organized but it still look like its LIVED in, is so much more relaxing. It looks nice but still loved. Thank u for the tips😊😁💜💜💜
I’ve always kept my shoes in their boxes, as does my mother, stores tidily at the bottom of my wardrobe and you can see all the shoes you’ve got. So much easier. My daughter and husband have now started to do this.
Oh goodness, yes, the decanting. I envy people who have time for that. And matching dishes? I've been married for over thirty years. We started out with matching but then, ya know, life. 😊
The other thing about organizing using shoe boxes or a few tubs, is that you SAVED money because you are not going out and purchasing the pretty pinterest organizers. My mom is very organized and most of her small things are in boxes.
Sometimes before buying actual containers I make provisional ones from cardboard boxes and so. Next week or two I test the system, is it convenient, am I really putting all that things out, how does it feel. If everything is OK, I go and buy containers (or use my cartonage skills to make a proper one). If it is not going, i can fix the system or think of another one, no regrets about buying useless stuff.
I live in the Phoenix area. The dust is real. The whole open shelf thing in the kitchen could never work for us. I dust CONSTANTLY but there is a constant thin layer of dust on EVERYTHING. We have a bar which is where I keep the coffee pot and have our mugs on a "mug tree" ON a lazy Susan... thats really the only thing we keep out and they are usually in constant rotation but I still rinse them out before use lol
The beauty of an organized home is its efficiency .....not any aesthetic or trend. Don't be fooled by Pinterest or other on line single moment perfectly styled picture. Reality is fluid.
Excellent advice! Thank you thank you. So helpful to me. Just curious (and nosey😊), where do your kids and husband keep their coats and hats and umbrellas? Also, where do you keep the stroller for easy access?
Thank you Lisa! So my kids hand their coats in their room on the hooks I showed in this video, it's easier for them to have everything in one place and my husband keeps all his things in his closet because he leaves in the morning and is gone all day working so there isn't really al lot of coming and going for him. Unfortunately there really isn't a good spot for the stroller so it sits in this hall right in the way, but that's because our garage is detached from our home and no where near the front door. We move it on days where I don't have to walk the kids to school all day long. =)
@@shannontorrens1 Perfect places for everything for your house layout. And the stroller is temporary. I’d rather have it ready to go by the door than have to lug it out from somewhere else every day.👍
"We need to normalize normal looking homes." Yes! We've worked hard to organize our homes. Those unrealistic picture perfect homes are not achievable in real life. They make us feel bad that we don't have all the latest and greatest organizing supplies when we should be celebrating what we have achieved.
Yes! I agree with this so much! Seeing these perfect home images can be inspiring sometimes, but they can also make us feel bad like our home is unorganized just because it doesn't "look" a certain way. We should be so excited that we have achieved a home that functions well, even if it's not super trendy. =)
I like how you show cabinets that are organized but not Pinterest perfect! It is real life - when I see the Pinterest perfect cabinets I always suspect it only looks like this for the time it took to take the picture - not everyone has the time or money to decant cereal and crackers into clear plastic containers, that doesn’t mean you are not organized. Although I do realize this is a necessity for some because of insects or humidity - not throwing shade at those folks, or even for those who do this because they love how it looks - you do you - just saying a cabinet can be organized without this step
A shoebox lid would do the same thing as that organizer you're holding. If you buy things by the case, they usually come in a shallow cardboard box, you can use those too. People don't need to buy all this stuff, it just ends up in a landfill.
our most used areas are a tie the kitchen and the living room if we arent in one we are in the other till bed then we go to bed we have a dining room i turned into a eat in pantry we are foodies we love to cook so a pantry made more sense but our table in there is bigger when we have guests so i kept the table in there too
Hi Sally, I have the older version of those boxes. Mine are probably 10 years old, but I still love and use them so I think the new ones would still work great too.
This was a very good and helpful video. But I have a question.I didn't think anyone but my husband said "measuring tape" I always say, "You mean "tape measure?" How many people say "tape measure" am I alone?
I always measure everything ..for all kinds of things…my house is so small 1925… If I need some specific I will go to the container store ..but most of all dollar store or Amazon
Such good tips! I've been following some organising accounts on Instagram and have been so tempted to buy all kinds of containers to make my kitchen more organised. But the truth is, it already is organised, just not "insta-worthy". The food already comes in packages that is good enough for storing it. Thanks for the reminder!☺️
If you spend the money for colour coordination, you’re setting yourself up for ‘needing’ Pinterest-worthy spaces. If you’re like me, you use shallow pans and candy boxes to organize and you smile because you’re organized and not spending money.
I organize the make up that I wear every day in the order I will use it. I mean, liners next to mascara, next to the brow pencil, next to the brow mascara. Yes, I use a brow mascara. That avoid thinking what is next.
FYI, in one of your videos you avoided donating under wear. Many thrift stores do sell bras and underwear. If they are clean and in good condition, they could be very helpful. At $15-20 apiece new, they are expensive!
Simple, practical ideas that *work*! Especially if you are trying to "minimalize", why buy more stuff ie: bins, labels etc. I like using less materials like you illustrated. If something comes in a perfectly fine zip close bag, I only use that and also reusable bag clips to keep bags closed and dry goods fresh.

I see more dusting to do and clutter.

@@shannontorrens1 - Oh, I forgot your area is experiencing nasty weather. Here in FL, good weather, we haven't had rain in a while, we need the rain.
Great tips for the deep closet ! I also liked that you gave your mom credit for her tips even when she is not in the episode.
Thanks Debbie, I asked my mom for any tips she had and I wanted to share them because I felt they were out of the normal ones I am always hearing. =)
I LOVE u Soooo much for this vid.💜💜 Seeing someone show their home organized but it still look like its LIVED in, is so much more relaxing. It looks nice but still loved. Thank u for the tips😊😁💜💜💜
Thank you so much!!
I’ve always kept my shoes in their boxes, as does my mother, stores tidily at the bottom of my wardrobe and you can see all the shoes you’ve got. So much easier. My daughter and husband have now started to do this.
Side Note! Hair looks GREAT!! 😊
Thank you!!
Hi Shannon, always love your videos - your haircut looks so pretty !
Thank you so much
I could easily have a Pinterest perfect pantry and fridge if I didn’t have a husband and son living with me😒😂
Haha I can relate to that on a lot of levels =)
Haha gotta love them
Oh goodness, yes, the decanting. I envy people who have time for that. And matching dishes? I've been married for over thirty years. We started out with matching but then, ya know, life. 😊
Exactly!! I normally only decant things that will spill everywhere LOL.
You're really the best!!! Real Organization in everyday life ❤
Yay! Watching while I clean 😍😍😍
Yay! Thank you!
You present such great ideas and I am still learning at 76. By the way your hair looks great
Thank you so much ❤
I live in the Phoenix area.
I think your kid's shelves look great, don't worry about that - they are kids. Great video, I always enjoy your tips! Miss your Mom.
Thank you so much! I agree about the kid shelves, it works for them really well. It's not something I like to look at but it's not my room =)
The beauty of an organized home is its efficiency .....not any aesthetic or trend.
Don't be fooled by Pinterest or other on line single moment perfectly styled picture.
Reality is fluid.
Yes! This is so true =)
Love your videos
Yay! Finally a pantry that’s MY size 🎉
I’d rather have it ready to go by the door than have to lug it out from somewhere else every day.👍
Hi Shannon. Just watched the video - thanks! I also just wanted to say it looks like you recently got your hair cut, and it looks really nice!
Oh thank you!
Great tips thank you so much❤🎉🥳🎊
Looks nice.
It's very useful and learn few thing's.
Great video, thank you! Btw your hair looks fantastic! God bless!
Thank you so much!
Great advice!
LOL. I think open shelves are a terrible idea exactly because of what you mentioned. 😂
Love your hair !! It looks awesome 🥰🥰
Thank you so much 😀
I like how you show cabinets that are organized but not Pinterest perfect!
Yes I agree 100%
Shoe boxes or storage?
A shoebox lid would do the same thing as that organizer you're holding. If you buy things by the case, they usually come in a shallow cardboard box, you can use those too. People don't need to buy all this stuff, it just ends up in a landfill.
Exactly, use what you have first for sure. =)
Girl thank you. Keep it real 🎉
Your hair looks great, Shannon! ❤ 0:12
Thank you!!
Doesn’t work for me. I emptied two baskets and by the next day they were full again. Clothes and towels were added so that adds up fast.
Nice video! And your hair looks fantastic 🥰
Thank you!! 😊
our most used areas are a tie the kitchen and the living room if we arent in one we are in the other till bed then we go to bed we have a dining room i turned into a eat in pantry we are foodies we love to cook so a pantry made more sense but our table in there is bigger when we have guests so i kept the table in there too
Thanks for sharing!!
Mom has some good ideas 💡
Definitely!!
Hi Shannon, when u show the SKUBB ikea shoe box beside your closet at @3:41 did you modify the shoebox yourself?
Hi Sally, I have the older version of those boxes. Mine are probably 10 years old, but I still love and use them so I think the new ones would still work great too.
@@shannontorrens1 yah cuz i have the newer ones, i like the ones you have, i thought you modified them
This was a very good and helpful video. But I have a question.I didn't think anyone but my husband said "measuring tape" I always say, "You mean "tape measure?" How many people say "tape measure" am I alone?
I think you can say it either way. =)
I say tape measure! But, I don't think it matters as long as everyone knows what you're talking about!
I say “measuring tape” for the cloth or plastic one I use for sewing, and “tape measure” for the metal retractable one, LOL!
I always measure everything ..for all kinds of things…my house is so small 1925…
If I need some specific I will go to the container store ..but most of all dollar store or Amazon
Hi Hanna, Yes to everything you said! =)
I like your tablecloths. Where do you get them?
Those are from Amazon. I have a link in my Reset video description from this last week. =)
Love your hair!
Normalize normal living. Thank you for your rational perspective.
Where did you purchase the office closet organizer?
Hi Val, my husband made that. But you might be able to find some shelves online that could achieve the same thing. =)
So helpful 🎉
Spider-free is one of my organization strategies too!
That is a good one! I don't like spiders in my home either.
Great video ❤
Thank you!!
4:16 thank you for this😭.. this gave me anxiety.. that y my space didn’t look like the Pinterest organization.. because that is not realistic
Good tips
I took my tape measure to Ikea , and lost it! Hence I still came back with the wrong shelf 😂
very. nice
I see what you mean by organizing and decluttering are two different things.
Yes! Normalize normal! You have a beautiful home nonetheless 💖
I could never have any open shelving in the kitchen. ❤
I bought a measuring tape at a garage sale for the purpose of leaving it in my purse.
True. Thanks for the info
