AHC is super easy to maintain and is exceptionally tough. You even have the option to replace rear coils with King coils if you want to seriously build out an LX with all the typical offroad gear (rear swingout bumper, sliders, underbody skids, drawer system, full length roof rack, rooftop tent, etc.). Even if all 4 globes fail (which is really the only potential failure point), you can replace all 4 for less than the cost of a complete conventional suspension. Drain and replace the AHC fluid every 30k (super easy job, 15 minutes tops) and you can run trouble free for a LONG time. Remember, if you do swap to conventional, you MUST replace the torsion bars and coils. Do NOT get the Strutmasters kit which only comes with 4 shocks and the rear coils. They are absolutely brain dead in suggesting that the LX torsion bars can be used as a "conventional" suspension/spring on these rigs. It shows they don't understand the AHC at all. For reference, the LX torsion bars are 26.4mm in diameter. The OEM Toyota LC torsion bars are 28.2mm in diameter. The OME torsion bars are 30mm and the bars from IronMan, ToughDog and Swayaway are 32mm. Each increase in size is an effective increase in load capacity. The AHC torsion bars and coils were engineered to handle 60% of the GVW with the AHC (hydraulic) element supporting 40%. The LX torsion bars and coils are NOT suitable to supporting the weight of even a stock LX on their own. Hope this helps. My 98 LX continues to rock on at 250k and 7800lbs. She's a beast that has been on 3 different continents and easily the most reliable and trouble free vehicle I've ever owned. Wouldn't hesitate to roll out of my driveway in Texas and drive all the way to Barrow Alaska or Ushuaia, Argentina. They are that reliable when properly maintained.
Gary Eanes thanks for that awesome description of the AHC system and its maintenance. I really do wish mine was still operational as it’s truly unique to the vehicle and I’m known to be a sticker on retaining stock features.
Gary Eanes thanks for the info. Interested to know about the king coils. I have a 2002 with AHC, if I add the king coils would that add more lift without affecting the ahc? I really like the way I can select height with the system.
THank you for that--- I was looking at a GX and saw these and wondered about that-- you make the third I've heard say that-- sounds GREAT and this is fine for me-- I'm NOT going to be ROCK CRAWLING - just basic offroading with service roads or snow etc.. this is BETTER.. thanks again.
JUST bought a 2007 with 24k miles. Kept in an air conditioned, heated garage with an oil change every 2500k miles. The inside still smells like a brand new car. I am in LOVE LOVE LOVE with it. It’s my third 470 and won’t drive anything else.
My 80yr old grandpa has one of these, still drives it everyday! He never used the suspension height system, Ever. So it might still work! Great review, man!
Great review and thanks for all your bullet points and helpful advice, this video and others. Happy to subscribed. I just bought my wife a 2007 (8-4-23) with 152,xxx miles and a one owner history with 52 full comprehensive service records. Totally stoked to have joined the family and feel it was a great choice for a 7 seater. Cheers
Always fun to track original MSRP, reliability, and inevitable depreciation of various vehicles. There are certainly well defined winners and losers in these categories.
The Land Cruiser J100 along with LX470 are my favorites. I have seen them with well over 500K miles or 800k kilo meters and they still drive like new. They are much better built and engineered then the Sequoia-Tundra.
I own a sequoia and it’s crazy I’m literally planning years ahead to get one of these. Crazy how that works but guess what. Car notes are like curse words now. This thing is timeless when you see them on the road there just great on the eye. The drop down tailgate. Man this thing is nice
I'm looking at buying a 06 Lexus LX470 with 215k miles on it, I plan to tow my 4 seater X3 side by side with it. Just curious, how long and how much does your boat weigh? and does it feeling towing your boat? Thank you for your time.
I have 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser and yesterday i went to testdrive this exact car it was in good condition and i have to say it is really comfortable, ride is soft and smooth, car is one the most reliable cars in the world, it is capable 4x4, holds well value, interior is not too old school for me it looks good even inside. For my use it is perfect car. 5/5 i highly recommend. Only downside i would say it is thirsty.
I had one of these back when I used to make real money. At about 100k it started overheating in really hot weather, which is dangerous as hell living in Las Vegas. You don't wanna get stuck by yourself on the 15 at some random spot in the desert. We never could figure out why it was doing it so I had to get rid of it. I still miss it, I loved, loved, loved this vehicle. If I can ever afford to get another one I will, even if it's used.
That’s a bummer about your experience. If you weren’t losing coolant than it most likely was the water pump (routine maintenance but a bigger job) or the thermostat (also routine maintenance but an easier job).
Just bought a near identical 2007 with 146k miles for $22k in Cupertino, CA. I'd say your predictions about price increases were right, minus a few unpredictable factors :)
For AHC, as long as you don't have a broken line or a bad pump which can be pricy to repair but is unlikely, most fail due to worn out springs putting too much stress on accumulator gloves which are the counterparts to air bags in an air suspension but the LX470 is hydraulic setup like your brakes so its more robust and long lasting with many examples reaching 200k with no maintenance at all (Toyota reliability at its finest). 4 new gloves cost 1k, new rear springs cost 300, and fluid is 50, adjusting torsion bars is free to put you in OEM spec. I'ts actually cheaper to repair AHC then to tear it out and put a cheap regular suspension, the AHC is a great system with 1" instant lift and active suspension adjustment based on your speed, reducing body roll, keeping you level on turns and braking, lowering height at highway speeds for increased MPG, dial to select your comfort level for american Lincoln towncar bouncy soft suspesion or firm suspension. Great review, but just wanted to talk about AHC as an active member of ih8mud and owner of an LX470.
HuskyNoob thanks so much for delivering that great info. I play with a ton of vehicles and would never profess to being a subject matter expert on any of them. Whenever I get into a new platform I usually head right into the forums to tap into the greater wealth of knowledge present there. As far as being in the shoes of what prospective buyers will experience in their quest to find a solid LX470, I found nearly 75% of the higher mileage ones I looked into as having a failed AHC system (unsure of actual cause) or a traditional Land Cruiser suspension setup installed. Just wanted to throw a brief note about a possible concern out there for potential buyers. Again, I wish mine had the system intact, but the condition and price point of the example I settled on more than made up for it.
Great review and I just subscribed to your channel! The 2006 & 07 are really going up in value! I’m on the lookout for one now, but not for the $30 to $40k price tag! A well maintained 200,000 mileage plus will be perfectly good enough for me! Really well edited video!
Thanks a ton and best of luck on your hunt. For sure the 2006-07 examples are increasing the most, all years are seeing some appreciation. I also encourage you to shop the older models too, you will not be let down. All years of the LX470 are really fantastic.
@@autoobsessivegarage Thank you for the response I really appreciate the advice. I leaning towards a 2006 with 230k for $19k. It has a great carfax of dealer maintenance for all years! However, there is also a 1996 LC for the same price. I’m torn! Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated! Do you have patroon?
@Louis Gomez I ended up buying a 2011 Honda Civic Si sedan believe it or not. That sounds beautiful though! How much? I could totally use three vehicles! :)
Earl Scheib I thought about getting more detailed on this, but since prices aren’t static and tend to vary from one geographic market to the next, I opted not to. In some videos I do give average price ranges based on conditions.
I'm looking at buying a 06 Lexus LX470 with 215k miles on it, I plan to tow my 4 seater X3 side by side with it. My trailer is 16 ft long and weighs about 1800 lbs. My X3 also weighs about 1800 lbs. Do you guys feel this vehicle would be suitable to tow my side by side? Thank you for your input on this question.
I have its' twin 06' land cruiser.. Expensive parts..from Iraq to the Serengeti; i came home from the military n bought the best i could find. Awesome review on talkin bout 5speed w 03 and styling slash vvti for last years. AHC is $2k a corner to replace but the rolls royce of 4x4 mixed terrain suspension. Not for overlanders. Re$ale tho.. AHC option will be gold. And the 4.7 sound extra detroit with borlas or "test" pipes :p
I have an 06 with 212k miles. I did not want to drop the 17k that I did, but wanted the truck so bad. It is currently getting a new timing belt, water pump, radiator, AHC work, all new fluids and filters. New TPMS sensors all the way around. Once this is done, it should be good for a long long time.
I always recommend going for the cleaner and better maintained example for a price point. I’m a little impartial to the 470 purely on looks. I find them incredibly attractive. That being said, if one is leaning towards modernity…the 570 will be more appealing.
Great torque in those diesel Fords, but I could see wanting a really reliable, easy to maintain, more luxury focused vehicle. I say do it. Ford for work, Lexus for play.
I'm interested in a 2006 Lexus LX470 with 215K miles on it. I'm looking to tow my 4 seater Can Am Maverick X3 with a 16 ft trailer. The X3 weighs about 1800 lbs and the trailer also weighs about 1800 lb. Could this vehicle be able to tow my X3 safely down the road? Thank you guys for your input.
The LX470 should be able to handle that with no issue. I believe they are rated to tow 6,500 lbs from the factory. There are no advanced tow controls, but shouldn’t be an issue towing what you have.
That’s a tough one with not too many details to work with but older 4Runners are very solid and priced decently. The LX470 and Land Cruiser are fantastic, but are getting more pricier and are not so good on fuel economy. Highlanders are similar to what you’re getting out of. I’d say shop for 4Runners or Highlanders…drive them both and see which one you prefer. Toyota has very solid reliability across the board. Good luck and let me know what you decide on.
100 series owner here! Price has def been driven up in the past 2 years on 100 series. It hit a low around 2017 or so. Crazy to see 03-07s now in the same price range as LX570s. The 100 series is quintessential 90s Toyota and I love it. However, it has been the least reliable vehicle I've owned, and also needy. Even finding a sorted 100 series, you will need to put things here and there. My 02 with 170k miles, I have put more than double what I've paid into the car fixing things here and there. Big ones being master cylinder repair, AHC delete, exhaust manifold repair, new steering rack, new CVs. Running 100 series are expensive.
SC14 oooof sorry to hear about your maintenance woes. Most vehicles never live long enough to see the mileage most 100s regularly get up to...so that’s saying something.
Great video! I just purchased a 2007 LX from a seller on the east coast. Can't wait to get it back here! I owned a 2005 LS430 for 8 years...amazing car. Just curious, what is the model of the phone mount that you use on your dash? I want something that doesn't have to be permanently mounted. Also, I've heard there's a module you can purchase (by GROM) that will allow Apple CarPlay integration on these. Anyone tried one?
Hey, Thanks for the your review. we're going the pick one up today just like this one same year, same color. i know they are the Best SUV cause my brother and sister has owned this SUV until today they never have any problem at all. I used to owned Cadillac escalade and GMC Yukon, believe me or not I has spending over total of $10,000 - $11,000 of Fixing them two And I will not buy them Again.
These 4.7 engines were so under-stressed, no doubt helping them live long lives. I'll take the power tradeoff for reliability any day in a truck like this.
This year had the 5spd auto which I found to shift at the correct moments more accurately than the previous 4spd auto. Full throttle downshifts seemed especially consistent.
@@redbone7040 One of my friend asked me if I can give him my LS400 for free because his 2012 Hyundai’s engine failed. I said fck off and told him give me 4K plus your Hyundai and then I will think about it.
@@autoobsessivegarage Thanks. It’s the Pearl specked White one. 2005. The AHC system is operational and I’ve hear you can adjust the height a couple inches which allows for bigger tires and not have to delete the system if you want a small lift for some off road. I’m looking into it.
In light of your conclusion that the Lexus LX470 equals current value, your favorite descriptor--"stately"--is so appropriate, taking on new meaning. I think "stately," whether it refers to an old mansion or a monument or a luxury car, must exude the idea of being long-lasting and durable; conservative designs help convey this. That's why the LX470 (and LS 400/430) are so "stately"--the conservative yet bold design have a weightiness that you don't see in current Lexus products. The outgoing LX/LC, for instance, is bold but not conservative. The new LX/LC is neither bold nor conservative. So the generations past the mid-2000s are not stately. And don't get me started on the current LS: spaceships can't be stately.
“Stately” was certainly my top adjective in this review and has been the most fitting word to describe Lexus design from this era. Your well penned words nail this very point. Let’s not limit ourselves to exterior design though, as the accompanying Lexus interiors of this period are equally stately. The materials carry with them an easily perceptible heft from door weight to soft touch material covered surfaces. The leather is supple and smells of actual leather. Lexus will never return to this design language…and it really doesn’t need to. These vintage examples will continue to run reliably and enjoyable for many many years to come.
how did u change ur suspension to the conventional landceuiser how much was it might I ask. I want the lx over the landceuiser but I don't want problems with the raised suspension option but the land cruiser is much more expensive to buy than the lx
I know this is an old comment but I have an LX and the way my mechanic did the conversion is by replacing the front torsion bars with oem lc100 bars and replacing the rear springs with oem lc100 springs. He left all the ahc components in the car and completely intact except for the shock absorbers, which he also replaced with the oem lc100 ones, and gave me back my 4 fully functional shock absorbers, which I have since kept in storage. I have to note that I think he drained out the ahc fluid so that the system can disable itself without him messing with the wiring, but I am not entirely sure and can ask for you if you’d like.
sankara Service costs are very low, especially since I do all the work myself. So far I’ve only had to do minor items such as fluids, headlight bulbs, and hood struts. Parts are very affordable and available for other maintenance items too. Such an amazing vehicle.
mohsin ali pardon me not knowing, but hey didn’t sell the Landcruiser in Spain? If looking to import from the U.S., I would certainly look for a California model so rust will not be an issue.
I’m seeing conflicting information on when the engine went up in horsepower and VVT. This video says in 2006 but multiple websites say it happened in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Anyone know the answer? I’m looking at an 05.
Alan Calvert I always use the Model Year designation FYI (it’s far easier). In 2003 the LX470 saw a 5 HP bump to 235 (from the previous 230 HP). In 2006 VVT-I was introduced bumping HP to 275 HP. That 2005 would have a non-VVT-I 235 HP engine (which is still fantastic btw).
auto obsessive garage thank you for that clarification! Great video and I look forward to test driving the 470. I am 6 foot 4 and hoping that I fit comfortably. If not, I will be looking at a 570.
@@autoobsessivegarage nope. I noticed it when youtube recommended me their video, I was like, haven’t I seen this video before? But It looked weird I remember a different thumbnail. So I searched up the title and there they were side by side, same title few months apart.
45 thousand mile, LX470 ? For $33,000 ?? If everything else is good on the LX, like the Rust-Free frame (very likely at the low milage)...and a few other things; I'd say that's a great buy. It'll ONLY last another 350 to 450,000 miles.
***Newsflash to ALL Internet crybabies*** ANY +5,000lb internal combustion engine vehicle that rolls off the factory floor with legitimate "off road" chops, is NOT going to get "great" or even "good" gas mileage.............and, if it has an 8 cylinder engine............. Seems super obvious, but apparently not. You (the consumer), want 25, 30, 35 mpg? Buy a Prius or go fully electric.

Thanks brother, the value in these machines is looking way up in the near future. Love the LX, but my 99 LC in full overland gear has my heart.
My 06 has 208k and looking new👌👌👌👌👌running like a champ won't trade for anything😳

Great video, really nice truck!!! Love all the wood trim!!
Ryan’s Rides thanks man, yeah she is still a looker.
i have 2001 got hit sad but now i got 2006 185k miles love it the best suv baby
nice review..... but what's the background music at the start? It's amazing! :D
Thank you. Can’t remember...but it was on the UA-cam music content page.
Would you consider the LX470 vs the LX570? Right now you can get an 09 around the same price or a little bit more than an 06 or 07 LX470.
I always recommend going for the cleaner and better maintained example for a price point. I’m a little impartial to the 470 purely on looks. I find them incredibly attractive. That being said, if one is leaning towards modernity…the 570 will be more appealing.
I have a 2006 cygnus at this part of the world. How do I know whether it has the vvti? All interiors are the same with the one you have.... Txx
You should have VVT-i as both the LX and Land Cruiser received it for that model year.
I have a 2000 Ford excursion 7.3 diesel with 290k miles on it. It’s a very good truck. But I want a LX470 for a second vehicle
Great torque in those diesel Fords, but I could see wanting a really reliable, easy to maintain, more luxury focused vehicle. I say do it. Ford for work, Lexus for play.
320K miles on mine! Still strong!
That’s barely broken in!
what a clean engine bay for the mileage!
Terry Harada you know how I operate man!
auto obsessive garage this is true!
Great review! I was shopping a year ago for one but opted for the larger cousin, 2006 Toyota Sequoia. Great engine & transportation Toyota/Lexus made.
Can’t go wrong either way truthfully. Great purchase!
@@autoobsessivegarage Thank you for your information. I'm subscribed.
@@vicolvera1282 thanks for the sub! Let me know if you get the truck. You will greatly enjoy it.
@@autoobsessivegarage I will let you know for sure. It's hard to commit to one when I haven't seen one or driven one in person.
I LIKE this-- but I prefer the GX because I like GEAR SHIFT LEVER to change gears.. and not so much computer crap.... the rest is great.
The GX is another great vehicle for sure.
I have a 05 Escape Hybrid right now. I want a Toyota SUV next. I'm a 63 year old woman. Don't have a lot of money. What do you recommend?
Thanks a ton and that’s gonna be an awesomeI truck! I believe it’s an iOttie model suction cup phone holder from Amazon...works pretty sweet.
How much did it cost you?
What a beast of a Lexus!
CarsofGlasgow agreed fully.
Thanks for watching.
The LX is such a reliable truck with respectable off-road credentials.
Congrats on the purchase!
The landcruiser also has the ahc as an option on 06-07 models
hamish brown very true. I’m sure it creeped into the LC because, well, people really like it AND because that tech better justified the LC’s price.
Best vehicle ever made
I’m with you on this.
Nice video, still have my 07 lx 470
Thank you and no reason not to hold on to these amazing vehicles.
Crazy how 3.5 lexus v6 2007 275 hp
These 4.7 engines were so under-stressed, no doubt helping them live long lives. I'll take the power tradeoff for reliability any day in a truck like this.
Does it downshift going up hills on the highway? 70mph
This year had the 5spd auto which I found to shift at the correct moments more accurately than the previous 4spd auto. Full throttle downshifts seemed especially consistent.
This is why you should buy lexus lx 470.
They are certainly a great vehicle and worth owning.
Very informative bro
Luqman Khan thanks man!
Bought a black 2006 LX470 with 130k miles for 14k in Alaska.
That’s an awesome deal for sure. How are you liking it?
@@autoobsessivegarage Alot smoother than my previous LX450. I bought it for carrying my kids around. My daily driver is 91 LS400.

الله يرزقنا من فضله
I’m on my way to buy one as we speak.
Best of luck!
I want the lx over the landceuiser but I don't want problems with the raised suspension option but the land cruiser is much more expensive to buy than the lx
jonny davis the conversion was done by the previous owner. Your best bet is to find an LX with functional AHC.
@@xxbingettinghumbled3032 yes. I'd appreciate that. thank you.
One of the best reviews so far, how is the service costs?
sankara Service costs are very low, especially since I do all the work myself. So far I’ve only had to do minor items such as fluids, headlight bulbs, and hood struts. Parts are very affordable and available for other maintenance items too. Such an amazing vehicle.
These are still like 20k+ w/170k miles
Heck nah!
Is the vvt any less reliable?????
Nope, not a bit. It’s a serious plus.
Deciding in LX or GX. 2004-2007
Can’t go wrong with either...but I prefer the LX470.
Its so damn reliable
Rujumba Herman 100% truth!
If only they were still affordable.
Agreed.
My 2002 has 650000kms
Rewan Aziz that’s epic! Still running well I assume?
I've heard that even with that many kms they can still be reliable if the engine has been serviced often
hamish brown routine maintenance is the name of the game.
Wooooow 650000kms.......Jesus Christ!!!!!!!!!! U almost doing 1million kilometers?????
Thank you for sharing that info! People are skeptical of these numbers and you are proof!
470 570 and the land cruiser v8 engine from toyota family rocks.....
One of the best V8s of all time.
Fact,, it is one of the bests heavy weight luxury suv .. Waiting for more and more upcoming machines from the toyota family!

These 2006-2009 vehicles are going for $30k to $45k 8/22
Deservedly so. You can still find “deals,” but they are becoming seriously rare.
Where is it? And is it for sale?
Unfortunately it is not for sale. We will be holding to this one for some time.
auto obsessive garage ok thank you
auto obsessive garage I’m looking for one to import it to Spain
mohsin ali pardon me not knowing, but hey didn’t sell the Landcruiser in Spain?
How much?
I sold my gx470 and bought this one and had much more room
Both are great. Yup, it’s the same size upgrade as going from 4RUNNER to Land Cruiser
0:45 a V8..? 😮
So has it more power and faster than Toyota Lc100..? 😕
It’s far too heavy to ever really be considered fast haha.
All US LX470’s and LC100 had the 4.7 liter V8 (2UZ-FE).
Here is LX vs LC :

That’s correct...after 2000 model year right?
Is it worth paying 10k for a 2005 lx 470 148000 miles with some rust ?
flip wood depends how severe “some rust” really is. I avoid rust like the plague, but some of it can be remedied.

Am I spending too much on an 06 with 45k for 33k?
That’s a bit of cash for one, but that mileage is unbelievably low. Do you plan to actually drive it...or store it away as a potential investment?
@@autoobsessivegarage it would be a daily
45 thousand mile, LX470 ?
For $33,000 ??
If everything else is good on the LX, like the Rust-Free frame (very likely at the low milage)...and a few other things; I'd say that's a great buy.
It'll ONLY last another 350 to 450,000 miles.
I like but I no money.
This is me on most cars I want.
