  • In this video I am installing the smittybilt src 76717 roof rack for my 2015 jeep wrangler jk. Mounting to the frame of the jeep. 2007-2018 JK's. I have chosen this roof rack so I can have my roof top tent mounted on top (smittybilt 2883 xl). I will be overlanding and kayaking so I need a heavy duty rack system. The Trailfx j029t is the same unit.

Just a thought, maybe attach one cross beam loosely to keep the side bars from falling. That may be too much trouble to be worth it, just a thought.

I also got the Smittybuilt 76717 (Rock Crawler Roof Rack). It is a solid piece of work, just like all Smittybuilt products. HOWEVER, if you already have a full Smittybuilt SRC rear bumper (like I do), you are screwed. You cannot mount it to the frame, but must mount it to the body. They said that it's just as strong. Yeah, right. Or I could cut off two inches off of both ends of my SRC Smittybuilt rear bumper. I haven't made up my mind about which I'm going to do, but I am not a happy camper. Why didn't Smittybuilt think ahead and make sure they designed their products to interoperate? If they would have attached the part that connects to the frame just two inches forward, it would have been fine.

I have seen where someone cut a hole in the stock plastic bumper. I feel like there would of been a bumper out there to be able to mount the rack and after market bumper. But totally agree, don't want to mount to the body. Especially the weight I am going to put up

Main reason I did mine to my body and not the frame is because the frame and body are mounted by rubber mounts allowing the body to move from the frame. And I feel the rear mounts on the frame will contact something on the trail as well. Maybe it won’t but I didn’t want to take a chance. Had it mounted my way for a few years now and nothing is wrong. Let me know if it breaks your windshield in time of twisting… I’m curious.

What was the end result for the rear bumper? Also, is there a passage between the insides of the piping to internally run wires for lights, or will they have to run externally? What did you use for a kayak carrier? (a kayak is the reason for my interest)

I still have not put a bumper on. I am going to put my stock rear bumper back on. I have seen someone where I live cut a hole down through. It works 👍. For my kayak I sit it flat up top with foam insulation they use for piping. You can run wiring as well through the tube bars.
