  • Intermittent Fasting, #Obesity & #Ozempic: Cardio Risks & Weight Loss Tips by Dr. Decotiis: News Nation
Okay. Now listen, obesity, we know, can be linked to leading causes of death, including heart disease. But apparently so does intermittent fasting, which is, you know, exploded in popularity over the years. Preliminary research presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions last week revealed an analysis of over 20,000 US adults found that people who limited their eating across less than eight hours per day at time. Excuse me? A time restricted eating plan were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease compared to people who ate across 12 to 16 hours per day. We should mention that this study was not presented in its entirety nor peer reviewed, but of course, it makes your ears perk up a little bit when you hear this or you see a headline like this. So what do we make of all of this? While helping me to figure it out, joining me is doctor Sue Decotiis, a board certified medical weight loss specialist in New York City. Thank you so much for being here. I'd like to start with the intermittent fasting. I do it, I'll eat like my my dinner at 5 or 6 won't eat the next day till 1112, maybe 1 p.m.. This is dangerous now.
Well, the study showed, I mean, they looked at 20,000 people and there was a 91% increase in cardiovascular disease. And those patients that ate within an eight hour window and, you know, less a 66% that ate in a ten hour window, which is what most of us do. So that was really a concern. And I was a little skeptical, but it was 20,000 patients. The problem with the study is that we don't really know what those people were eating, and we really don't know how many of those patients had cardiovascular disease to begin with. So it's really something to think about. Okay, good.
So I won't I won't I won't jump off of that just yet. But ozempic, you know, become the talk of the town. Very trendy. You heard Doctor Dubrow mentioning comparing it to casual like Botox. Are you concerned by that language?
I'm really not because I'm a medical weight loss specialist in New York City and I use Ozempic semaglutide. I use Wegovy mounjaro, which is a generic is for Appetite and Zepp band. These drugs are highly effective of not just getting people to lose weight, but to lose fat. And of course we see a reduction in cardiovascular disease. Obviously there there's approved for diabetes. People have better mental acuity when they're using these medications. And it's a myth to think that these drugs cause muscle loss. They really don't if they're used properly. That's the key. That's the key.
When you say use properly we have a minute left. What do you mean, use properly? What should they not do? What should they be mindful of? Well, in.
My practice, I make sure that every patient is weighed on a body composition scale. So we look at body fat composition. Muscle mass patients have to be extremely well hydrated. That's very important sometimes upwards of a gallon a day. And I think also we have to get the body fat down to a pretty low level, maintain the muscle. And then what I do in my practice is I taper people off the drug very slowly as I'm watching their body fat. And this is highly effective at getting people off the medication.
And real quick, is it hard to do that to get them off? It really.
Isn't. My patients just need a lot of encouragement. We have to watch their diet, make sure they're getting enough protein, and they have to come into the office and get weighed.
Well, I think it's a good thing we living in a day and age. Yeah, I think it's we're living in a day and age where people are really concerned about their health, trying to lose weight. It was different than 20 years ago, 30 years ago. So. All right, I won't jump off the ledge yet. You've had some. Good. Now I know where to go. Doctor. South Dakota, thank you so much. And that does it for us tonight.
