did you know ,there was an unofficial remake version for the snes because some one managed to squeeze the 32X hardware alongside an sfx2 chip inside an cart module and a sound module,it was supposed to be hand made produced and to be sold on ebay but it,s cancled once rain drops near by his house were he was starting assambling those parts together,. sadly their video,s here are deleted but that version i saw was good.!!!
It's nice to hear that someone else was a fan of the 32x and Doom on 32x. The 32x growing up was one of my favorite systems mostly because of memories, the good games for the 32x were awesome when played with a friend and my cousin and I had so much fun over the years playing Mortal Kombat 2, Doom, Cosmic Carnage, Primal Rage and more together. Doom was the first version I myself got to play on a regular basis since at the time I didn't have a computer that could run Doom very well (only Wolfenstein 3d) so the different music and levels in this version were what I associated with as being the original. Of course later I realized the music actually sounded much different on the PC and it took me awhile to really love the PC music over the 32x's, but still.. the 32x holds a fond place in mah heart and so does it's games.
"What's behind door number 2? Thousands of enemies trying to slaughter you. The same thing is also behind door number 1... and 3... and every other door in this game. Basically don't open doors. Or touch levers. No matter what you do in the game, you turn around and there like a hundred bad guys just standing right in front of you. That's part of the fun of this game." That was the best line I have ever heard about Doom.
This version was missing details compared the DOS version but they weren't essential, just noticeable. It is a GREAT version of DOOM considering the hardware. Back in 94 or 95 I got a copy of DOOM and the 32X for about $90. But it was worth it to me. I spent so much time with this game, I loved it. It was well worth the money. I wasn't going to pay $400+ for a PSX and a copy of DOOM at the time. I didn't bother with Playstation until Resident Evil 2 and the price drop.
I'm a Doom fanboy and I own just about every version for consoles and PC. The snes version is hands down the worst available, its borderline unplayable. 32x version isn't bad, I actually like the music.
fargeeks I like it too and have also beaten it. I was just salty when I posted that. If it was 1995 and I never played it, it would be the greatest thing ever.
+Elizeheimer Francenweiser the music is so realistic for a snes console like theres this one level where you just hear some guitar twanging or something and its so real its like you gotta guitarist just playing away from 4 feet away
The consoles had bad luck with doom: -Good music, but shitty graphics: SNES and 3DO -Good graphics but shitty music: 32X -Good graphics but no music: Jaguar, PSX*, Saturn* *Only ambient ''horror'' sounds instead music. Best versions: DOS and Windows 95 (renamed to ''Doom 95'').
WenaxBkn310™ Doom64 also used an ambient horror track and it worked really well, also the sound effects were the same between the N64 and Psx, though I'm not sure about the saturn as I've never owned one. Honestly, to me the ambient music and sound effects of the psx version fit the game better.
The terrible music always added to the scariness in the game for me...they were off key and strange sounding...I don't want a rock concert while I'm playing a game about demons and hell...I want to be creeped out
omg YES! I actually prefer the 32X music to ANY other version...it's super creepy and perfect. 100% agree about the rock music removing some of the evil vibe from the game.
I'm still glad that I have a working 32x, with all the cables needed to play it. Don't have a ton of games for it, but I DO have Doom and Chaotix. It's actually the one I originally got when they were still being sold. Personally, I think the 32X was great..sorta. I think it had the power to be good. The games on it weren't horrible..or at least..some of them were good. I think if they would have done it differently, and not made it such a pain in the ass to use, it probably would have been really popular. Especially if they simply made a new Genesis with the 32x built in. The stuff it was capable of, would have meant some really good games could have been made. But instead, it was annoying to hook up and use, took up space, and cost too much.
I love Mark and I love Sega but sadly, 32X is not the way to go for Doom. It only has 17 maps and none of those from episode 3 (Inferno, the HELL episode) and that means no BFG-9000, even the Cyberdemon boss is missing. The SNES version takes some work to adjust to the slowness BUT has all three episodes, all bosses, all weapons, but I'd go with Doom on the PlayStation and Doom64 if you want good unique console Dooms that feel kinda different than PC... Love the animated fire skies and the music in the PlayStation Doom. ;) -Mad Wolf
I bought this version of the game as my first 32X game. The Graphics, well, it's hard to tell exactly how it stacks up compared to the SNES because I only have an RF switch for my Sega Genesis. It seems to play a bit choppy, but it's not too bad for a 32X port.
Bad music and the fewest levels of any console port, but at least it actually uses the Doom engine. The SNES version used its own poorly-written engine that played nothing like Doom.
Blastfrog but the snes version had better music, and that's the only aspect of the 32x version that sucks, combine the music from the super nintendo and the 32x game and boom!
Bingo Alpha The reason for that is the renderer ran on the sound coprocessor, oddly enough, and there weren't enough cycles to do music simultaneously.
The GBA port was basically the same as the Jaguar port, but it actually does have music. Sure, it's mixed up and doesn't have smooth framerate, but it's very impressive for what it is. I just wish the developers actually took the time to add the remaining levels from the DOS version instead of using the Jaguar port as a template. It's not like it was incapable, since the GBA ports of Doom II and Wolfenstein 3D managed to keep all THEIR levels.
Oah man, after reading this comment, I downloaded emulator versions of Doom for the SNES and 32x just to see how big of actual difference, and man you were'nt kidding. The SNES version is soo unresponsive and pixilated it's hard to see how anyone would actually even consider it a game. I made it to level 2 and gave up, just unresponsive crap. The 32x version is no prize either but it's night and day vs SNES version. You can at least tell you are playing Doom, it's running with decent smoothness and while resolution is still horrible it's better than snes. Controls on both are horrific though
I loved this game on 32x... You're right, it was quick it was fast and I used to get nauseated every time I played because you whipped around so quickly
My rich friends had PCs, I had a 32X I got on clearance at Wal-Mart with a $4.99 copy of Doom. I kinda liked it better with a Genesis controller myself, I thought keyboard was clunky for shooting games.
Haha awesome review I had exact same response to this game, just got my 32x and was amazed. I expected a fast version of the atrocity that was on SNES but I got a pretty good but short good pc port! I've now played all but 3d0 and Atjag versions this is a good playable version. Music is not as bad as they always say and can be turned of and a 1meg midi of the snes played in background lol.
If anything this is the most balanced console port of doom. the jaguar version has the best graphics but no music while the SNES version has the best music but the worst letter boxed graphics. the 32x version runs fairly smoothly and at least has music making it the better over all experience on console.
Its awesome seeing how the CGR community is contributing to these awesome reviews by going out of their way and donating their games to mark and the rest of the CGR team. Kudos to all of you who're making it possible.
+prodigy928 When you're a poor kid who can't afford a PC or any other consoles and already has a Mega Drive and the 32X is on clearance for $20 with $5 Doom, you get Doom. haha
Thats not the thing. I owned a PC back in the days and the game too. but for a retro console is this a good version. but not complete. thats bad, thats what i want to say.
But the SNES version butchered our eyes and made us want to vomit from the choppy frame rate. The SNES version had advantages, it was even more true to the PC version. But its too hard to look at.
Well, to be honest, I'd rather have better sound at the cost of better framerate. Granted I could just play the PC version and not have to choose.... but if I HAD to choose^^'
PikaLink91 You do realize that the butched sound is not the fault of the Sega 32x or the Sega Genesis right? The blame is 100% on the developers that ported Doom to the 32x. They incorrectly took FM synth designed for the then popular PC sound cards that utilized a Yamaha YM3812 OPL2 FM synth chip and expected it to magically work on the Sega Genesis hardware. No, just simply no, The Sega Genesis has a YM2612 OPN2 FM synth chip which is an entirely different thing than OPL2. So yeah the blame is purely on lazy developers who rushed the game out.
At the time of the release of the SNES version, PCs weren't as abundant in peoples homes as they are today, so the SNES and 32x versions were all that I played at the time. Sure the SNES visuals were watered down and the 32x sound was terrible, but it was DOOM at home.
Shmeh Fleh the 32x actually is quite powerful and doom plays good on it. but like we all know the music sucks and there are alot missing levels. due to bad programming and not enough time.
***** i think it would have made more sence to just make it for the original genesis and give it a special chip like on snes. also of course make the soundtrack decent.
I see that yes the graphics are better on the 32X but the snes port has better sound and 22 levels Vs. 15 on the 32X at least that's what my box for it says it has
gonna have to disagree on this one Mark, this version was pure shit imo, the blocked in screen drove me nuts and the sound was gawd awful.. i still say go with the snes version if you're not playing it on PC.
Mark Lasky well of course it has better graphics but the boxed in screen stuff just distracts me too much, i hate games that do that, as for the controls yeah their way more responsive on the 32x but after awhile you CAN get used to the delayed controls on the snes version, after a few hours of playing you barely even notice it.
The Blade Raziel Well, true. Also, sorry I am not trying to make a "omg this console is better cuz bla bla" thing ( I HATE people who start flame wars over consoles ) but just saying I think the boarder is a good thing. The reason for it, I could only think, is so the game will run faster. also, I believe I said this in another comment, but the 32x was rushed, so I guess they didn't have enough time to fix the framerate issues and just made the screen smaller. I think they did a good thing by doing that. No clue why the 3DO version was so laggy, despite it being rushed.
Mark Lasky its cool bro.. and yeah i don't doubt the boarder around the screen was put there to make the game run smoother, tho i'm not sure how or why that would make a difference.
The Blade Raziel It makes a difference by having the overall resolution lower. Makes the graphics less detailed and such ( tho not to the point of enemies looking like atari2600 sprites from 2 inches away ). Every 3d fps dos game, including doom, had a screen size thing which makes the screen bigger/smaller. And it works on making it run smoother.
This was a pretty good port, aside from the music. I would love to see more 32X games released, even with it's bad reputation. It makes the Genesis that much cooler in my eyes.
I've got this version and it's really good IMO. Sure, it's only 15 levels long, but the music does grow on you. I kinda like the 32X toons myself. Of course they're not as rocking as the originals, but they have their own charm to them. If you've got a 32X, you need to get this game. It's seriously only a few buck with shipping online.
1. playstation :- complete version of doom, ultimate doom & doom 2 levels, atmophere & added lighting effects, good frame rate & controls. 2. atari jaguar... fast full screen version of original doom (came out before ultimate dooms release, less levels) co-op & deathmatch through jag link, extra lighting over pc version omits music due to cartridge limits for better graphics gameplay textures & resolution, only console version programmed by carmack himself 3. 32x... good frame rate & gamplay
Did the 32X add anything to the standard Genesis experience? It looks the same. I had the 32X, and I remember playing Cosmic Carnage, but I don't remember what it was supposed to add.
more blast processing ;) it has two 32-bit RISC procesor with 23 MHz clock i belive, one acting as main cpu and second to deal with the 3D graphics calculation.
Can you make a doom for pc review? I think I have it somewhere in my windows 98 games collection but I first want a good review to see if it's worth searching for it in my big pile of games.
@Scouter9001 Why was DOOM 1 removed? The XBLA version of DOOM 2 is probably the best version of the game I've played. I'd really like to have DOOM 1 on there too.
I'm confused... don't you play the 32x with a genesis controller? If so then how is he strafing, or am i just stupid and don't know that that there are shoulder buttons or something on the controller?
What was the resolution of Doom in DOS? or was it customizable? Because I always find impossible to see anything 4 meters ahead of you in the SNES version. Was it also like that in the PC version? I've only played Doom in the newer ports, which let you play at a high resolution.
I've been looking for that wire to hook the 32X to the model 1 for what seems like forever. Most 32X systems have a ribbon cable that comes loose and causes them to not work, and sometimes it is as simple as connecting it again to make it work. Great review as always!
The SNES was more capable than it was allowed. It could've been full detail, instead of halving the horizontal resolution. The 21MHz FX2 chip easilly handled the graphics, but what bogged the gameplay down, was the main 3.6MHz CPU. If you noticed, the only time it bogged down, was when monsters were attacking, moving, or changing visible areas, the archetecture stayed at a constant framerate. Of course, it would help if the SNES could handle more than 1 scalable background per scan line.
1996 was a magical time. We only had Genesis and couldn't afford the Saturn or Playstation. But 32X was stockpiled at ToysRUs for $29.99 each, brand new, with Virtua Fighter packed-in!! I hope Classic Game Room will review Tempo.
At the time I was about 12 or 13 and this was the best copy of doom I could get my hands on! It was hooked up to a home stereo and 19"cry tv!!! Coolest thing in the dark!!!!
Surprised he did not comment on how horrible the music is. They tried to make it match the PC versions music. Great review. I still play Doom on the PC today.
Doom 1 and 2 on PC are the best games ever. No battlefield, COD, Gears, Dead Space, bioshock, fear or any other game series/titles will ever be as good or worth while to play than Doom 1 and 2. Best 2 games ever.
okay i want the whole doom game including all 4 episodes plus tnt/evilution and plutonia and i want doom 2 with the master levels, and i want no missing levels, basically i want all possible doom 1 and 2 levels i can play, is there such a thing that exists that has all the levels?
the 32x port is one of my favorite ports because u get to watch fire shooting out the sides of ur 32x while playing it
did you know ,there was an unofficial remake version for the snes because some one managed to squeeze the 32X hardware alongside an sfx2 chip inside an cart module and a sound module,it was supposed to be hand made produced and to be sold on ebay but it,s cancled once rain drops near by his house were he was starting assambling those parts together,.

The opening sentence of this review is the greatest breakdown of a genre.
That's part of the fun of this game."
That was the best line I have ever heard about Doom.
He wanted to play something warm and comforting...so he played Doom.
I love this show.

+Elizeheimer Francenweiser You think that's bad? Try the 3DO version. It's the real shit.
Pixelized Dreams That music tho.... it's amazing.
I believe the 3DO version is the only one I don't own. Might have to get a 3DO just to own it.

It is a miracle that we can still see!! Those of us that raised up playing those games!
The consoles had bad luck with doom:
-Good music, but shitty graphics: SNES and 3DO
-Good graphics but shitty music: 32X
-Good graphics but no music: Jaguar, PSX*, Saturn*
*Only ambient ''horror'' sounds instead music.

Original Doom is best on PC
Ah man, this review made me all warm inside from remembering the days when I'd play my Doom 64 for days on end.
Recording the Doom 32x music:
"I'm gonna take some laxitives and bring a microphone to the bathroom."
I love Mark and I love Sega but sadly, 32X is not the way to go for Doom. Man, the music was absolutely garbage on this port, I can't get past it.
Gochkoslav it was actually supposed to sound MUCH better, but the music programmer had no idea had to program FM synthesis for music.
Gochkoslav Then turn it off. There's an option in the menu.

Should review Doom for Ti-83 next.

bad that there is not the full doom1, just 15 levels :/
There's a hack that includes all levels. If you own an Everdrive you can play it.

And just like AVGN pointed out, the soundtrack has been heavily butchered and gruesomely molested in this version.

@TrueGamerNET isnt there some package on steam that includes all of these?
I see that yes the graphics are better on the 32X but the snes port has better sound and 22 levels Vs. 15 on the 32X at least that's what my box for it says it has
1 - 32X port of Doom plays WAY better than the SNES port!
2 - Sega ALWAYS wins!
zyrgle If I had to choose one of the two versions, I'd pick the SNES version. More levels and all that.
Andrew Vrba More levels on the SNES version just means you'll need more eye-bleach!
Sega... SEGA!!!
Ok....
It's all about the gameplay, which is simply better on the 32X version than SNES.
Man, so many old good foundation games out there and nobody remembers them.
Thx for bringing it up to the surface dude! ;)
gonna have to disagree on this one Mark, this version was pure shit imo, the blocked in screen drove me nuts and the sound was gawd awful.. i still say go with the snes version if you're not playing it on PC.

its cool bro.. and yeah i don't doubt the boarder around the screen was put there to make the game run smoother, tho i'm not sure how or why that would make a difference.
The sound effects are fine, but what's with the music????
I wonder why they couldnt increase the music quality in the 32x, was it limited by the genesis sound equipment?
This was a pretty good port, aside from the music. I would love to see more 32X games released, even with it's bad reputation. It makes the Genesis that much cooler in my eyes.
Cool. Question: Will this work on the retro bit super trio plus?
I've got this version and it's really good IMO. Sure, it's only 15 levels long, but the music does grow on you. I kinda like the 32X toons myself. Of course they're not as rocking as the originals, but they have their own charm to them.
If you've got a 32X, you need to get this game. It's seriously only a few buck with shipping online.
What the heck? When did the enemies from e1m8 turn from the pink ones to the grey soldiers?
@pladampa you mean the PS1 and the 32x?
Grate review man, It's nice to see some one recognising the 32X as working like it was supposed to. Even if it was the best out come of a bad idea.
you got robocap vs. tremanator 3 for genisis?
1. playstation :- complete version of doom, ultimate doom & doom 2 levels, atmophere & added lighting effects, good frame rate & controls.
2. atari jaguar... fast full screen version of original doom (came out before ultimate dooms release, less levels)
co-op & deathmatch through jag link, extra lighting over pc version
omits music due to cartridge limits for better graphics gameplay textures & resolution, only console version programmed by carmack himself
3. 32x... good frame rate & gamplay
At the bottom of the list you have the 3DO version which runs horribly but has amazing music
Excellent review as always CGR, very fun to watch!
no mention of the music?
does doom and castle wolfenstein have the same face at the bottom of the screen i always thought they looked the same
Does this game work on regular Sega Genesis without 32X extansion?
And half the levels are missing?
Did the 32X add anything to the standard Genesis experience? It looks the same. I had the 32X, and I remember playing Cosmic Carnage, but I don't remember what it was supposed to add.
more blast processing ;)
it has two 32-bit RISC procesor with 23 MHz clock i belive,
one acting as main cpu and second to deal with the 3D graphics calculation.
@Go4br0keV2 you can play the old original doom in the xbox version of doom 3? How?
Can you make a doom for pc review? I think I have it somewhere in my windows 98 games collection but I first want a good review to see if it's worth searching for it in my big pile of games.
@BiffsGamingVideos 1 problem: no music.
i just recently got another Sega Genesis model 1 with Sega Cd attachment & now youve inspired me to get the 32x now!
I have this, I think it's a pretty good port of Doom. I'm glad you have a 32X now. I look forward to seeing more reviews for it.
@Scouter9001 Why was DOOM 1 removed?
The XBLA version of DOOM 2 is probably the best version of the game I've played. I'd really like to have DOOM 1 on there too.
Mark you're the reason I got the 32X and Doom for this....Thank you I am not disappointed!
where can I even get doom for the PC???
I'm confused... don't you play the 32x with a genesis controller? If so then how is he strafing, or am i just stupid and don't know that that there are shoulder buttons or something on the controller?
Did you review dark forces or jedi knight already? Two more great old school shooters.
@QUAKE495 On real hardware or emulation? Because all super fx games run much faster in emulation.
What was the resolution of Doom in DOS? or was it customizable? Because I always find impossible to see anything 4 meters ahead of you in the SNES version. Was it also like that in the PC version? I've only played Doom in the newer ports, which let you play at a high resolution.
+IVAN3DX PC was full screen, typically vga - 800x600 but you could shrink it to improve performance. It was the best version at the time.
I looked it up, and I read something about DOS max resolution being 320x200, but the win95 increased it to 800x600 or 1024x768 or somthing like that
I've been looking for that wire to hook the 32X to the model 1 for what seems like forever. Most 32X systems have a ribbon cable that comes loose and causes them to not work, and sometimes it is as simple as connecting it again to make it work. Great review as always!
Could you get Uninvited for the NES?
But it sucks that the gameplay screen isnt full-size ! its only likt 65% (i just got this game on 32x)
Its better on this than the super nintendo because its on a blast processing system
How do we send you games?
@joguSD i installed doom(sharewqare) and theres no sound :|
Any diffrence?
they should have released doom for the Sega CD 32x
No music?
you have the 32x now? well when you review it be sure to show it on the genesis and sega cd ... I only ever had the genesis I couldnt afford those two
Cue the upcoming 32X review. I can't wait to hear what he has to say about the 32X
Im sorry to hear you were sick there. Hope you feel better
@Bastylax86
You can turn the music off, but guess what happens if you turn the TV off? :D
I have both doom for the 32x and the cord to connect it but the playntrade closed while they where repairing my 32x and wouldn't give it back!
I love this game, but I cant find the full version anywhere, can someone help??
@EkajTheSwordsman
jaguar doesnt have music only sound fx
the music blows pretty hard on the 32x when compared to the SNES but at least it's playable. what about the saturn version though?
Have you even tried Doom for the PS1
@iniche What's wrong with it?? tell me...
Definately true there. One drawback in the visuals, is the lack of DooM textures, more DooM II in appearance.
@Jakester12621
One question: did you ever own a 32X and play DOOM on the actual 32X?
Or are you just parroting what someone else told you?
What happend to the site?
@TheMachinimanator CDi?
I accidentally marked this video as inappropriate. So if this gets removed, can you please upload this video again? Thanks
is it ok if u review Doom 64?
I used to watch this channel so much when I was little
+TristanTehGamer lol same this guy just makes it interesting to watch reviews of these old games to find the roots of games we know as today
you get a better quality picture and sound thru the av cables, but I think you have to use the model 2 genesis
Surprised he did not comment on how horrible the music is. They tried to make it match the PC versions music. Great review. I still play Doom on the PC today.
I have a working genesis 3, but it can't be used with the 32x :(
@XLeonhart1982 Ha, me too. Ive had all my Dooms and Wolf3D's out lately - that time of year again right? :)
how do u donate?
Did you play the Xbox 360 port?
Doom 1 and 2 on PC are the best games ever. No battlefield, COD, Gears, Dead Space, bioshock, fear or any other game series/titles will ever be as good or worth while to play than Doom 1 and 2. Best 2 games ever.
you cant play a first person shoter with out that all important second joystick and as you know the sega genisis has just one so how do you play it
okay i want the whole doom game including all 4 episodes plus tnt/evilution and plutonia and i want doom 2 with the master levels, and i want no missing levels, basically i want all possible doom 1 and 2 levels i can play, is there such a thing that exists that has all the levels?
