    My first thought was why ? but then again, why not. This was a pretty interesting drill and thanks for sharing. Hey it's your drill , restore it, refresh it , buff it off, oil it up and lets see if it works. Keep on showing these videos, I for one like em. I am 80 years old and enjoyed watching you get this one "on the road again" . Thanks again for sharing...Ken, Marina CA.

      Kenneth- You have been around for a while. Have you ever heard so much fear of using a metal framed power tool before the days of youtube and such? I think it much be a european fear of some kind. Never heard the guys on construction sites saying, oh my, I'll get electrocuted if I use a metal bodied power tool!! Ha!!

    • @kenzpenz
      @kenzpenz 5 років тому +16

      Yep I've been around awhile born in 1938. Actually I have heard all the warnings about the metal frame tools and the concern about the grounding a long time ago. I remember stories about people getting shocked by such tools, especially if they had been worked on and not properly grounded. I never heard about anyone getting electrocuted by an improperly grounded tool. I think a lot of stories came out of people getting shocked by such tools, were those working in a wet environment. Nowadays most tools have a grounding plug or have plastic bodies.

      I was laying on a concrete floor on a very hot day, drilling holes in the side of a elderly lathe (1940s) and as my shirt hit a certain wetness..the ungrounded lathe...which had been set on 4x4s decided that I was ground path. Nothing like doing the "fresh caught fish" dance while taking 220 volts with a metal cased drill stuck to ones hand. No one around who could see me..and it finally tripped a 15 amp breaker. I lay there for about 5 minutes letting my heart beat go back to normal and then discovered my bladder had also failed. Went out to my service truck and changed clothes. Now I ALWAYS check potentials when working on old machines. Always.

      I'm tired of living in a "throw it away" world. Being retired, I am some time to find things to restore to useable condition, such as outboard motors, kids toys, tools, etc. Most of the time I can't give them away. Everyone wants "Brand New"! No one wants to take the time to fix items and think they must be visually attractive to others! Aaaahhhhh!

    Hi I'm from Japan. Although I don't know how old your drill would be, the name plate reads made by Matsushita Denko Corp which was one of the Matsushita group company. The plate reads in Japanese language, so interesting how you could find that in your country. In old days, Matushita Denko produced somewhat professional purpose utilities such as capacitors, industrial devices, building products and home appliances. They still exists under the name of Panasonic Electric Works today. You can google it to get some historical facts. Sorry I can't specify the model No. as it's not written on the plate. Anyway, good Restoration work!!

    My dad was in construction/iron worker and his tools are from the 60's / 70's (like this one). When taken care of these tools will last forever...I kept my dad's tools and we still use them. One thing I'd do to this drill is put a new cord on it. They are the first things to go and the easiest to replace. Also get an extra key and place it on the cord, that way the two are always together and you never have to go hunting. This was a good find and you should enjoy it. Nice job.

    Great job cleaning’er up. I have a couple notes, first: For safety sake I would have used a three wire polarized power cord with a ground wire. That is a metal chassis, hope you don’t use it in a wet location and find out why the hard way 🙃 And secondly I would have replaced the grease/repacked the bearings and gear house to add even more years to its life. I saw u dabbed some on but you should push it through the bearing too😉 I’m not nit picking your project, I’m just looking out for ya brother! Thanks for sharing👍🏻

    You tested with the switch off. Then turned it on right after and grabbed it. Obviously not double insulated, but you should of tested first with the switch on. Still could of potentially created a path to the case after the switch. Just to be safe you should bond it and use a grounded cord. Nice clean up and inspiring. Make me want to clean up my 25y/o makita circular saw. It still works but I’m sure a fresh start will make it worth it when I pass it on to my son like my dad did for me. Back when most power tools were made in America.

    When I was a young kid (maybe 8 or 9 max--back in the mid 70s), my dad had a drill very much like this that stopped working. He let me take it apart. I remember it was very similar to this inside, including the replaceable brushes. It was nowhere near as rusty as this. I think it was just the brushes that were bad, but he had a nice, new drill, so this was expendable and a good experience for me, so he let me take it apart to see how it worked. I remember it was interesting how the gears reduced the speed of the motor. Thanks for this bit of nostalgia

    • @Fadamor
      @Fadamor 5 років тому +1

      While I agree grounding the tool is the safer choice, improving on the original design no longer makes it a "restoration' and instead makes it a modification. He'd have to go with a 3-wire power cord, increasing the diameter of the cord and potentially requiring the cord entrance in the handle to be enlarged. I doubt a tool this old would be used for real work anymore... maybe it's headed to a power tool museum.

    Hi!
    gear show.
    I saw this video from Japan.
    I had this drill until recently.
    It is about 50 years ago.
    This is a Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer "National" which is the current "Panasonic".
    It is a drill shared with the table saw for DIY.
    My father bought it for home DIY.
    My drill has stopped spinning and I attempted restoration, but I did not get over it.
    Unfortunately I have disposed of it.
    I was deeply moved by seeing this movie.
    Thank you.

    Great job! Despite the people that claim this is no restoration I say it is, the drill looks great AND functions as it should. When we restore old car we don't replace the sheet metal with new unless it is destroyed, nor do we replace the old engine if it is still in working order. With that said, bravo sir! That icing technique to free up the stuck drill head was pretty slick, it takes a lot more patience to take apart things that are stuck together and fix them, then just going to buy something new. 👍

    When cleaning a motors commutator, the preferred method is to have the armature rotating while sanding or filing the copper. Remove one of the bearings and chuck up the shaft in either a drill press or another hand drill. run on the slowest speed and clean up commutator. The reason is that you want to avoid flat spots which will eventually lead to arcing and premature brush and commutator failure. Don't forget to clean out the gaps between the copper pole pieces. When replacing the brushes, wrap a piece of fine emery around the commutator with the abrasive side out. Assemble the armature and brushes then rock the armature back and forth to shape the brushes to the curvature of the commutator, Any gaps between the brushes and armature lead to excessive arcing, overheating and damage. I would also suggest replacing the bearings and cord with a ground wire. Bearings are dirt cheap on Amazon. I bid you success in all future restorations. Unless you approach these projects with the correct techniques, you may find that you've wasted valuable time and energy. Peace.

    Good job, whoever it was renovating it! Bit worrying that theres no earth on it!!! Anyway, should last another 40 - 50 years, unlike the rubbish of today. I bought a black and decker drill a few years ago which wasn't cheap by any means and it lasted less than 2 years! First the stupid 'keyless chuck' (bad idea) fell apart and I had to use two pairs of grips to tighten bits in it, then the bearings started going and finally the variable speed control board went up in a puff of smoke and that was the end of it! I'll never buy a B&D product ever again, utter junk. My dad got a B&D drill and sander back in the mid 70s, he's still got the drill and I have the sander as he didn't like using it and guess what? They both still work perfectly to this day. Now everything is built to last a couple of months past the warranty period. Thanks for posting and happy drilling!

    I might sound exagerated, but when I restore a machine I even grease the threads of the screws in order to assure an easy disassemble for the next time 😎; anyways, cool vid man, thanks for sharing!
    P.S.: You heard the non regular sound when you runned it and how fast it stopped once you turned off? Those bearings need to be changed, even if they feel ok to the "finger sensor", their grease is ooooold, and it can complicate you any moment ;)

      я делал дрель после как она побывала у гастробайтеров, скажу сразу патрон открутил после того как срезал болгаркой юбку у патрона, плюс патрон фиг провернется - полностью заклинил - да дрель работала кое как, но пришлось менять подшипники как на якоре, так и в редукторе, плюс после тяжелой эксплуатации на убой - ее пришлось всю разбирать и перебрать - чтобы даже до болтов добраться пришлось вскрывать толстые слои наложений строительных смесей которые превратились в камень.
      Да дрель восстановил - были заменены 4 подшипника, восстановлена кнопка переключения реверса, восстановлен редуктор для ударной работы дрели - заменен электро-кабель и щетки, замена смазки везде.
      А на видео - дрель просто где то лежала в гараже и не видела работы по черному. Вся реставрация разобрать и почистить мелкий мусор, а у моей дрели после разборки пыль слоями отпадала - видео для диванных героев которые не видели настоящей дрели после работы на убой и потом лежала в багажнике лет 5, где не было сухо как в пустыне.

    Nice to see an older tool returned to working order. But like others, new grease would have helped it along in years to come. Also not sure what your wiring standards are where you live, but I would have replaced the cord with one with a ground wire. There was even a spot to tie ground to the case in the handle. With an all metal case tool, grounding is pretty mandatory. Glad to see you at least checked it out before picking it up!
