From an Era when tools didn't look like cheap toys or transformers
100 percent sure this is now better quality than a store bought new one.

I had one like this, the torque could break your wrist, and that is not an exaggeration. You were lucky to have one with variable speed, and even luckier if it still worked and wasn't just on or off.
Also, I hope he replaced the emi suppression cap. The noise these can back feed onto your power can make things in your house malfunction.
The modern drill is a marvel of engineering, only flaw is the use of shitty components in some parts to make them not repairable and prone to fail after a couple years
But the possibilities are great, brushless, variable speeds, amazing battery life, hand tightening of the bit, lightweight and secure
This one is really primitive compared to modern drills, only perk is the all metal conception which will last for such a long time, but all the other fonctionnalities are years behind anything made today
@jason lul IS THIS EVEN FUCKING ENGLISH BUD WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY? LMAO BROKEN ASS ENGLISH. FORM A SENTENCE I'M DYING LAUGHING OVER HERE!

Excellent restoration. The old drill looks really good.

derek wilkinson seem it better than old!
@Basil Rathbonez No, they were already being made with a plastic housing by the 80's. I'm estimating more from the 1960's
Basil Rathbonez Even if it was 1980s I’d say 40 years are enough to call a drill old.

@Basil Rathbonez wooooosh
Hey Basil, suppose it depends on your definition of old. I was selling Hitachi tools 20years ago and this machine was long off the market before that. They are actually nigh on indestructible and although they lack many of the modern features we now love on our tools, they were quality tools and made to last. Nice to see someone give this thing the care it deserves. If it was a car you would call it a classic.

Instructions are for people who prefer to have the same number of fingers on each hand, and eventually a pair of eyes... :D
Of course - you can always do with only a pair of balls, if you don't need your other appendages :D
Dude, seriously - those are simple tools, and yeah, you're not so wrong. But start working with some big ass machinery like factory robots and stuff - those instructions are more important than your life insurance and your will! Once you see someone's fingers twitching on the ground detached from their hand - you'll know what i'm talking about! I hope you never have to...

Me too
It’s 12:45 AM for me
I have no idea how any of this works, nor why it was in my recommended, but... This was so oddly cathartic to watch
It's to show you when back in the day they have actually made durable all metal tools, unlike today's all plastic gears, and built in obsolescence.
Same here. :-)
Are you sure you don’t mean lethargic
@JOEY RABBIT < "Cathartic" means oddly satisfying/purging, while "lethargic" means to slow you down, apathetic. So probably the OP knows what they've meant. he-he
Bill A I know what it means lol I know I said lethargic to. It does put me to sleep lol. You thought I didn’t know and you was going to troll. Ha ha. Classic you the man. 🤣🤣⚰️
Cool result!
But for future projects: don't hit new ball bearing. Use pres.
Yeah, it kinda hurts every time I see him doing it, but he probably has no press. And if he doesn't hit them hard it will be probably fine.
if you hit them in the part you are pressing (with a appropriate size tube or socket) it doesnt matter, but if you hit them on the opposite part you can damage them because they dont take side loads very well... (hope i made sense, i am noty native english speaker)
@@MrHBSoftware I know what you mean and it is true
@@MrHBSoftware No, this is important. When you hit a bearing, there is a big force for a short time. This force can destroy the bearing seat. When you press it, there is no such problem. If you hammer the bearing as he does, then it breaks the hole for the bearing and destroys the bearing as a whole. Because effort is transmitted through balls.
@@logic0905 i understand what you are explaining but just dont hit the whole bearing, only hit it with the hammer on either the outer seat, if you are fitting the bearing itself or hit only the inner seat ,if you are installing a shaft in the bearing hole...., bearings are made of hardened steel and na shatter if you hit them too hard but that only happens in very extreme cases of heavy beating....
you can also damage a bering by pressing it as a whole or aplying pressure on the wrong side, just like with the hammer...when i press bearings in i always use a suitable sized tube and press only on the side i am installing.
you can use an appropriate size tube or bearing press kit but most people use sockets from their socket set...
only tapered bearings take side loads well, ball bearings are not designed for side loading
I love your videos. Taking things apart from a very young age was always a passion of mine. Wish I could have put the damn things back together again too though. 😉😂

Yes but time is also money.
@Chris P. No it was it has a brushed motor so that would've needed a change (by that I mean only the brushes). And the rust isn't a good thing either.
Obviously you dont have to restore it. Normally you would just repair it

I had a massive, vintage 1/2" Craftsman electric drill that I got from a yard sale and kept it for many years until I realized that it had mainly sentimental value.
Because a modern hammer-drill facility is essential for drilling concrete. However, it is nice to see how some people have the skill to restore products to
pristine conditions. I myself have been a book restorer.

Good ol' Japanese quality product, pretty much needed just some cleaning.
Well, 'old japanese quality' = 'new chinese quality'. Took a while before japanese meant quality after the war. Back then, 'china' meant quality. We still call fine ceramic 'china' because of that.
Haaaa...haaaa...you never lived in the 1950's. "Made in Japan" at that time meant cheap and poor quality. It wasn't until W. Edwards Deming started working with the Japanese after WWII as part of the Marshall Plan to rebuild Japan that Japanese manufacturing started to advance in quality. Deming was so revered in Japan that In 1960, he received the Second Order Medal of the Sacred Treasure from the Emperor of Japan for improvement of quality and the Japanese economy

Oh really, nice to hear that, thank you!!!
It is truly better than new, even from a functional point of view. Nobody makes cast aluminum case like that anymore. I have an old drill with aluminum body, which I bought at a flea market for under $5. I once dropped it from the roof, and it survived the fall.
I remember the "old" days when you had Hitachi tools people were jealous! 😎

You're welcome, I am happy that you like my work.
Probably better than any new item. Great.
My god... what an impressive work!
I had one of these....my uncle was such a great electrician he would go to all the local electronics stores...Radio Shack, Heathkit, Olsen's...etc. he would go to their trash and take all the stuff they threw out, take it home, go through it all, fix it. if he couldn't fix it, he would dismantle it and remove all components and electronics and put them away in their assigned drawers. As a kid, no one in out family ever needed a TV or stereo etc. in fact he had V's and stereos and etc. all over his house.lol
I loved being with my uncle....I learned so much from him. And now I do the same thing :)
thank goodness he added a ground-wire... but then wait what about the plug???
That was my thought too. Seems to be an incorrect selection. Should be a three prong plug
For this kind of usage the ground normally either goes into the drill, or the cord.
Just saying but if it has a metal enclosure, it needs a ground all the way through plug and outlet ... But after all: This is a (very nice) restauration video and not a "how to wire ground on a drill" tutorial :)@@xvx897
www.infobarrel.com/Media/Wall_Socket_in_Japan
Used the same as original, Don't think it would meet current requirements, but 2 prongs on metal tools was standard back in the day. Also, in the US, the neutral and ground are (connection wise) the same thing on single phase. The difference is that the ground is designed not to actually carry current, but rather only to be used for safety. Assuming the path through the neutral is not broken, it is equally as safe as with a third prong. It's only when the path through your body to ground has less resistance that there is a problem.
