      @@JoshsShop I think if Victorinox were to do that they would have to use the Wenger style scissors because what I have heard is (I don't know if this is true) supposedly a number of years back the machinery used to manufacture the mid sized scissors broke down and the parts necessary for the repair were no longer available and/or the cost was prohibitive. This sounds ridiculous but it's the only explanation I have heard. I would love aCadet X as well.

      Personally, I'd love what I guess would be called a "Bantam X" or "Compact ALOX".
      Also, for office EDC, I would love something smaller than the Cybertool M without giving up the scissors. I don't need the two separate blade and two separate openers of the Cybertool S. Give me a Compact, but with the hex driver layer inserted in the middle. Or I'd settle for a Yeoman if they brought that back.
      And I know MANY people wish for a Compact but with Phillips driver instead of corkscrew.

    For whittling, I got the „Swiss Army 7“ model, which is essentially a Farmer except it has a small hook shaped blade instead of the can opener. I reground the hook blade to a whittling blade, works really well. Bonus: it comes without a keyring so no hotspots.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому +1

      I looked at that knife and thought about doing the same thing. I actually like having the key ring so I can hang the knife on a pocket clip, but I understand why some people wouldn't like that. How do you like the reground hawks bill blade? I personally feel that Victorinox steel is just fine for whittling (I do plenty with a reground small blade), but it is nice to have the slightly harder flexcut steel in my knife.

    • @abiskop
      @abiskop 2 роки тому +2

      @@JoshsShop I guess a „real“ whittling blade like the Flexcut will work a bit better and hold up better long-term, but I haven’t tried that so I can’t compare really. I only whittle for fun when I am out in the woods and the Victorinox blade works just fine for that. I also use it kind of as an all-purpose wood working knife for camping/bushcrafting. I liked that regrinding the blade is less „invasive“ and easier to do imho than messing with the rivets etc.

    Grinding/filing off the key ring:
    - when the attachment point is on a spacer (e.g. Alox): put some tape on the scales to protect them
    - when the attachment point is on the back spring (e.g. modern 91 mm Spartan): you can (partially) open the tool on thet layer to raise the spring out of the knife while grinding

    Excellent video. I had a sak as a kid but ended up losing it. I've got a handful of budget multitools and recently dove back into the world of Vicrorinox. Settled on a Super Tinker as it most suits my current needs but would love to mod it, I don't find anything in the "opening" row particularly useful.
    One thing I have done already is filed down a very small Phillips bit to slot into the groove behind the back springs. A work in progress but the prototype works great. It's a cheap and easy way to carry a mini bit (or possibly a couple) without having a corkscrew 👍

      Actually I take that back - I'll use the wire stripper and maybe the pry bar, but since I'm not likely to encounter many large flat head screws I'm debating cutting a 'v' into the end of the bottle opener to use as a nail puller.

      Felix Immler has a video about modifying the canopener into a hook blade. This would be fantastic for opening boxes and clam shell packaging. He didn’t grind off the pivot point of the canopener for this, but if I were to do this mod, I believe I would grind it off to open up the blade, or at least reshape it so it serves as a guide to slide the blade as it cuts.

    Regarding the box opener mod, I just use the bottle opener to open boxes. The bottom point (the point that goes into the scales first) is pointy enough to get through tape, then just run it down the tape, and the box is open. It does gunk up the bottle opener, but that's no issue. It might hold onto screws better, and it will never poke through a bottle cap into a drink like the can opener does.

    I like to turn my 58mm blades into an awl because I normally carry a modestly sized traditional pocket knife with 2 blades and don't use my 58mm models as a knife.
    It's not the most ideal thing to do, but if you're willing to shorten it and cut in a notch / hook in the top like you have on leatherman tools you can make the most of things and have a decent small awl.

I use both styles of the awl a bit, with the hole and the style on the pioneer/farmer/electrician knives. A cadet with scissors would make an excellent knife though. The 111mm knives have similar construction. Grinding the blade down would be easy enough, just be careful not to over heat the steel. You could cut the liner lock off and smooth things down fairly easily I would imagine.
      You can use a drill or drill press to sand down slightly oversized brass rod to use as rivets/pins. Just be careful during disassembly to not mess up the bushings that the scales snap onto that are on the pins and you can reuse them.

      I just put the awl where the Phillips/cork screw would be on the blade layer and notched the scale just a bit so I could access the nail nick in the awl rather than having the big cutout in the scale where the phillips/corkscrew would stick out. Hope that makes sense.

    Is the steel on the file hard enough to be made into a whittling blade? That might be fun.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  Рік тому

      I haven't messed around with a SAK file, but generally files are so hard that you have to take the temper out of the steel (called annealing) before you can really mess with them. Then you have to re-temper them. It would be doable, but you would probably have to remove it from the knife so you didn't damage the other tools. I also don't know if the end result would be any better than just going with modding one of the existing blades. I would be surprised if the steel is any different than the other tools. I might have to look into it though, it is an interesting idea.

    If I was going to make scales from timascus, would I need to make 4 inserts for each side for the brass thing to press fit into? Since the timascus is a lot harder than the brass.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  2 роки тому

      You will for sure need to make some recesses in the scales for the pins and bushings to fit into. If you can be precise about it, you can make them just the right size to press fit on, but it would probably be easier to make the recesses a little bit oversized and epoxy the scales on.

    Do you know if there's a nail file thats the size of the one on the cadet, but that has a screwdriver tip, similar to the tiny one on the Classic SD? I end up using my nail file quite a bit actually. I'd trade that for the small blade on my Tinker...I think thats the sportsman, but I don't really want to lose the philips for a corkscrew

    • @JoshsShop

      I don't know of such a tool, but I would think you could reshape the tip of the nail file on the Cadet to serve your purposes fairly easy. Then put that into your knife of choice.
      Alternatively you could swap the corkscrew for a Philips on a Sportsman.

    I'm getting a super tinker in the mail soon but I'm legally not allowed to carry a knife (any knife) where I live, so I'm looking into removing the two blades and keeping all of the other tools. Would this be a fairly simple process or is it complicated by spring placement and such?

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  Рік тому +1

      The trouble is that the two blades share a spring with the Phillips screwdriver, so just removing the blades and reassembling would result in a wonky knife because there wouldn't be pressure on the spring opposite the Philips.
      Probably the best solution is to remove the blade layer all together and swap out the hook (unless you really love the hook, but I rarely use it) for the Philips. It would require you to completely disassemble the knife, probably fiddle with the Philips a little so it matches the hook (I haven't compared the two closely enough, you might be able to just swap them), then reassemble. All totally doable, but it takes a few tools, and some gumption.

    • @redbassist5590
      @redbassist5590 Рік тому

      @@JoshsShop Thanks for the reply :) I can definitely do without the hook, and moving it down to a 2 layer was my thought too. The hook and the scissors share a spring, and after looking at it the best I can while it's all still assembled, it looks like the Philips/knife spring is a touch thicker than the scissor/hook spring. They also appear to be different shapes too. Do you think the Philips would still function using the scissor spring?

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  Рік тому +1

      @@redbassist5590 I don't currently have a scissor layer on hand that I could play around with, but I did measure the thickness of the Phillips and the hook, and they are the same at the pivot. The shape seems pretty similar, but not exactly the same. If you built yourself a little jig to hold the layer before you reassemble (I do this in a couple of my videos) you would be able to see if you could make some adjustments to make it work, or maybe it will work just fine as is.

    • @JoshsShop
      @JoshsShop  Рік тому

      It should be easy enough to completely remove the scissor layer, and you can reuse the pins because you are making a smaller knife, as long as you are careful.
      I'm not 100% sure on the hook in place of the corkscrew. I am pretty sure they are different thicknesses, so you would need to adjust for that. I don't have one on me at the moment to confirm this, but all you need to do is measure the thickness of the tools as close to the pivot as possible and you will know if you need to thin it down or add a spacer.

      @@JoshsShop Thanx for answer, man. I have a Handyman, that has both the corkscrew and the hook, and to me they seem the same thickness. If the thickness is the only criteria for replacement, then it can be done. Regarding the first question, then I can transform my Handyman in a 4 layers survival sak, without scissors and pliers. (I bought the Handyman for the pliers, but found out that I don’t like the weight in my pocket and the thickness in the hand. I prefer to have 2 smaller saks with me in different pockets, that also feel better in the hand). What do you think, could I add the remaining pliers from the Handyman to a Compact (making it a 3 layer)? I think, all I will need, is to buy longer pins.
