Mum tries out MS-DOS 6.22 (1994)

  • We all know she thinks "Windows 8 is the worst operating system" but I had a little trick up my sleeve to get her to change her mind... Introducing MS-DOS 6.22, A text based operating system made by Microsoft in the 1980's and 1990's. Its official!!! Windows 8 is no longer her most disliked operating system ;)
    Tasks Given:
    - What time is it?
    - Write save and open a text document.
    - What's 48x32
    - Turn off your computer
The mother in this video only ever uses Windows XP running with the classic win95 theme. Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows or other operating systems through history such as DOS? Then give your suggestions in the comments section.
Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.

There's never been a time in my life where I have used dos. I grew up in the windows xp era, updated to vista then windows 7. I just looked up how to use msdos a little bit for the purpose of this video.

    • @weeardguy
      @weeardguy 4 роки тому

I have used it. Not to great extent, but evenso I will probably still beat many youngsters. In my work, I do STILL use it on a regular basis. It's always nice to have new interns and see them completely boggled when they find out the mouse isn't working and everything is keyboard based.
Funniest time, before one of those computers (running Windows 95) broke down, was when the machine was booting and the intern in question shortly looked up from his phone and saw the splash screen for Windows 95. 'DID WINDOWS 95 REALLY EXIST!?' he basically yelled at me like he had just discovered the greatest thing on earth.

I was born in the sixties. Our first computer was a roller deck, for most of us computers were only seen in sci/fi films and needed a whole room to store it.
It wasn't till 77/78 that computing became a subject in school and punch tape at that.
So some of us tech savvy oldies are well versed in Ms DOS
Nowadays I use DOS to completely blow computer scammers mind, as they try and get you to login in to windows,
And you reply saying you can only see a C:\

I tried CPM in an emulator. I consider myself quite good with DOS and okay with Linux command line stuff (Bash). I could get it to do some stuff, but it could be a bit frustrating. I suppose some one who was used to CPM would have much less trouble.

Techs should learn DOS just in case Windows fails so that they can troubleshoot and get around the myriad of folders Windows creates. I learned portions of DOS before taking any computer courses and it was fun to use, just as it is today. Many manufacturer companies used DOS to create data usage reports, etc. Some small ones may still use a form of DOS if they don't want to deal with Windows. Windows makes doing things easier, since it is a GUI system/environment than what DOS was and takes advantage of the mouse without having to include code, commands, variables for the mouse to work within a batch file, i.e. the Autoexec.bat and the Config.sys files.
Having access to a vintage computer at home allows me to utilize an older DOS version and experiment with its commands, etc that I once did several decades ago. It's fun.

7:05 The "time" command tells the computer that you want to change the time, if you did not intend to do that, cancel it by pressing [ENTER]. If you just wanted to see the time, use the command "time" with the variable "/t" ("time /t"), that will tell the computer that you just want to see the time.

“It’s a very negative system”😁. I always feel that way with UNIX/Linux style operating systems with their cryptic and un-user friendly Case Sensitive commands. Mum would be the best operating system designer / focus group test person. Operating system designers take note, always test if your mother can use it. If not, then the system is not usable and is a “negative system”. If it passes the Mum usability test, you’ve got a winner!

You can use the mouse in MS-DOS. All you have to do is to get the driver (look it up on the internet, it's been quite I while since I've last fooled around with this OS), get it to launch from the autoexec.bat at the start-up and you'll pretty much have it.
Oh, and yeah. Look up for dos-shell. It's quite a cool quirk of MS-DOS 6.22. Had a pretty fun time using it.

Ctrl-Atl-Del to reset, Ctrl-C to exit the infinite loop, Alt-X to exit Qbasic and * is used for multiplication.
DOS is a command line OS, so to operate it you need to know commands. It's like linux's terminal. In fact at its core linux is a command line OS. GUI is just an extra set of programs running on top.

I still have memories of using my Windows 98 MS-DOS startup floppy to run scandisk. If manually started from Windows, scandisk would run while the OS was running, as opposed to running during boot. Therefore, everytime something changed on the disk (Windows 98 supported paging), the process would start over from scratch. It was much quicker and easier to to MS-DOS, as 64mb of RAM was enought to not require DOS to use paging. If only I knew of a way to defrag from MS-DOS.

For us old dogs this is super fast to work with. I still can type it in faster than finding an icon on a screen.

I've heard incorrect use of the terminal can mess up your computer so I am not sure I would feel comfortable with her doing this.

I was gonna say about 99%+ of people using MS-Dos 6.22 used a mouse, but you're right, a mouse driver wasn't installed by default, however most people would of got MS-DOS pre-installed with their computer, which the OEM would of loaded all the drivers in Autoexec.bat already.

ms-dos 6.22 has mouse support, that allows you to use the editor and help extension of it, with mouse.

Yea, I got her to try dos for the comedy sided of things. Dos was not requested... It was completly my idea for her to try it so I uploaded it with the zorin video incase people didn't like it. Luckily people did like it though ;)

Yea but was the mouse driver installed by default? It's just that we test operating systems out of the box without modifications...

You can try out "GNUstep" then, it's opensource variant of the old NeXTstep OS by Steve Jobs's NeXT company...
And it's basically the today's MAC GUI father... : ))
It's fully source compatible with mac's cocoa...
It can be installed on Win, Mac, Linux (easyest).
