You know what I hate about UA-cam? The fact that it doesn't let me edit out this cringy intro!
*Lol, Yep, If only you could edit it.* *I still love this video though,*
Lol it is funny
When I was like 8 and I clicked the video the intro scared me
Hello. I didn't know you are watching your old videos.
Well it is 5 years old, but the quality is still pretty good!
Who are all these DOS snobs piling on the dislikes? Dude's just tryin' to learn about an OS before his time. I don't see anything wrong with that.
***** Hope that the onboard sound has SB16 emulation. The virtual systems in VMWare Workstation (which he uses) does that at least. Proper sound output is one of the hardest things to do, (due to many standards and manual driver setup) and depending on which time period is aimed at graphics can be pretty hard, too.
I'm 11 and I use DOS all the time, there are some amazing games on there.
+Keith Weimer (KillerQ13) using dos when I was 5 or 6, DOS is amazing.
+Orpheusftw It is impressive to see someone that young to try out an OS I grew up with.
+pokeforce what do you use?
You're not getting the full DOS experience unless you're using a big fat beige computer, with a glary flickery CRT monitor that bathes you in nice warm gamma rays. And a big fat clickety-clackety keyboard that makes you work out your finger muscles. And a REAL, slow, talkative floppy drive, or two.
God, I miss the old days.

The fast racing game was due to your CPU being too fast. Back in the day, people coded based on hardware clock speed.
So true, i remember when i tried to run some of these games on a newer PC and they were fast as hell 😂😂😂😂😂😂
And that's how the turbo button was born
probably because the only way (i think) to do a delay is to get how many clock cycles it will take for instrunctions like beq, inc, and nop, because those take time to loop
and how long a clock cycle takes on your cpu

Does anyone else feel that typing "md apple" is easier than opening up Windows Explorer, right clicking, clicking new folder, then typing in apple?
I most certainly agree.
Faster? Sure!
Easier? Not if you have to memorize all the commands for everything you want to do and have very primitive visuals to guide you. It would certainly take some time to get used to it before you could be efficient with it.
In certain instances the command line can be faster however I agree with 'The Lappin' that you have to memorize all the commands along with all their parameters which can be a daunting task. I myself prefer using a GUI. Somethings you cannot do in a GUI like pinging a server to see what response you get. This situation also applies to Linux. There are a large number of Linux users who only use the CLI for all their work. In Linux and Windows I personally prefer using the GUI. I do use the CLI in Linux and Windows when the situation warrants it. Most of the stuff you do in the CLI you can do in the GUI. I guess it is a matter of preference.
I actually use Windows and don't know much about the cmd (I know basic navigation, not much else), I just noticed that.
hell yes, but then again, I Love the CLI, some don't , each to his own i guess
To all the people hating on this guy for not knowing enough about doom / DOS or generally being tech-savvy about technology in that era, a little piece of advice- stop.
The fact that you judge his worth and your self-worth by association by how much he knows about computers in an era before he was born is pathatic.
I for one applaud his curiousity, even if the title is a bit cheap.
Seriously though, stop making such a big deal out of everything.
So you played Doom decades ago and know how to navigate DOS. Big fucking whoop, nobody cares.
I agree. People don't understand that not everyone is perfect. NOBODY IS PERFECT! Like if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all

I grew up using DOS and still remember how to use it inside out. I was screaming "TYPE" during that video. In fact when Windows 95 came out it took me a long time to get into the habit of dragging and dropping files - I used to open CMD and type the commands!
Well, you should try out linux for this purpose.
Watched the video to the end and really liked it, brought me so many memories. I was kind of your age when I started programming in qbasic, and you're doing it too, i found it awesome. I never heard of GEM back at that time, it looks way more complete than Windows 3.1, which was the first I used, maybe it's lacking compatibility, standarization and networking, but does still look more professional. Yes, most of those games have been ported/remade for tablets and smartphones, which is great, they didn't exist back then and would have obviously become more popular than playing in a computer.
I was with you up until you started playing Doom...
I loved this video! It sure took me back, and the kid is funny. I had a great time watching!

There is this joke:
Wheeljack goes to optimus prime and says: "i finished to build the 5 new guys, now you can give them life."
Quickly the autobots organize a welcome ceremony, so Optimus stays before the 5 dinobots, all other autobots circle around, wispering how big, imposing, menacing and overall cool the dinobots look, so Optimus gives them life, the eyes of the dinobots starts to glow, and Optimus says: "Welcome in autobots ranks, my friends"
One of the dinobots points himself with a thumb and says: "Now comes what somewhere else is called a public declaration.
This is a public declaration.
Me.Grimlock, speaking about me.Grimlock declares that me.Grimlock is ready to work. End of declaration."
Optimus says to him: "I'm glad to hear that my friend, but could you excuse me a moment?"
he goes to wheeljack and whisper in his ears: "Why does he speak like that?"
Wheeljack shrugs and whispers back: "I did some research and learnded that VBA is good for dinosaurs."
How to make dos doEVERYTHING windows can:
Install windows 1.0
Upgrade to 3.0
Upgrade 3.0 to 95
Upgrade 95 to 98
Upgrade 98 to XP
And there we go!
Optional:
Upgrade XP to Vista
Upgrade Vista to 7
-However, do NOT upgrade from windows 7 to 8, if you feel the need to have the latest version, wait a week or two, for 10 to be released.
DarkCorruption Unless you're running dos on a modern day desktop...
DerpMans Derpyskin Those old Windows will probably not work with modern hardware.
Lofote well dos did though
Isn't that a virtual DOS box in the video? Because DOS will probably have Problems with those large hard drives from today ;)...
So, yeah, with virtualization you will probably get the extreme upgrading to work ;)
***** well then change the CPU, and add more ram.
wow this was an honestly enlightening video to me. i never realized how advanced computers were back in the 80s and 90s. only ever really saw some cmd stuff, never any of this pre-win3.1 gui stuff in specific programs. super cool :D
Dos 6 is still one of my favorite OS's. I had a laugh watching this youngster fumbling through it obviously without having prior knowledge and not having read the full manual. One of his big problems that was evident with the games was that he only played three, one of which required play on a slower PC in order to be playable, and then declared dos games to not be fun. I had a HUGE problem with that. All he would have to do is grab a copy of DosBox and crank a modern system down to the old speeds and play some of those old, beautiful, gems rather than some guy's Mario game, a cracked racing game that doesn't work, and a minute of Doom. Dos will never replace what we have now, but it's still a great OS and it had some amazing software and games made for it. It was a golden age for games and software back then.
+BlackburnBigdragon Also DOS had software that could slow it down for old games
Yep. I've tried so many times to get a DOS 6 to run on a virtual machine on my PC for fun and even following tutorials online, my computer just refuses to install it and run it, sadly. I'd love to get it up and running again for nostalgia sake, but I don't think I'm going to be able to do it without an old PC.
BlackburnBigdragon IF you are still willing to try, then make a post on superuser.com with an attempt and where it isn't working and i'm sure you'll be up and running with it. And let me know where you link is. If you really can't get DOS 6 running i'd eat my hat. I'd be interested to know what error you get when you start virtualbox and load up a boot disk image. (And if you need help in getting to that stage then just ask)
boliussa I was trying to run it using Windows Virtual PC, not VirtualBox. I always found VirtualBox confusing.
+BlackburnBigdragon well, you can always ask if you are confused or stuck anywhere when attempting it in virtualbox.
you haven't even tried to install a CD-ROM drive. getting a mouse or sound card to work is child's play compared to that.
i hope you now have an idea why some older PC users tend to be a bit arrogant towards younger users. when we were your age, we had to live with this every day and we had no internet to babysit us through our problems.
the least fun was having to create separate himem.sys and EMS configurations in your config.sys and autoexec.bat files because some games needed himem.sys and others EMS and there was never one configuration that ALL of the games were able to run on...
And fun was also

I was trying some of this out in Command Prompt on my computer and it worked!
As an old school guy who started with Dos 3.2, I applaud your efforts, and enjoyed your video. It was only a little way down the line when we could type 'Win' at bootup to start the magic! Thanks for an entertaining video - will sub and watch more! :)
At one time, I was known as a DOS GURU! So thanks for a trip back in time. When DOS 6.2.2 was king, Windows 3.1 was it's companion so one could view photos, play tunes and so forth. There were audio files that could well be played in DOS, and if I recall there were some nice audio programs also available. So try it again but install it's companion Windows 3.1 or even 3.1.1 if you want to get your network up and running.
+Jerry Ericsson Not necessary. There were some really awesome picture viewers and even MP3-players for DOS available. I even ripped Audio-CDs and encoded them to MP3s in DOS. And thanks to Novell, you could also network in pure DOS. While Windows 3.1 was nice for its time, it wasn't necessary for the most basic things. Nowadays, I would never go below DOS 7 in conjunction with Windows 98 since it offers the best of both worlds, especially if the system is supposed to use the Internet.
I think the video should have been titled like "can the average Joe use dos" because from that perspective it was pretty good. I haven't used dos except for basic tasks but I may try some games after seeing this.
This video makes me feel old.
I remember when everything you did or wanted to do was done in DOS. Windows was just a fancy GUI overlay for using word processors.
Nice to see someone reading a book on this instead of Net trawling.
I use DOS a lot long time ago to backup my AutoCAD dwg files and play some DOS games at lunch break. These bring back memories. Thank u for this video. Still using it now within Windows 7 to do some network config because some of the command give faster result. U just have to memorize it. Multiple DOS command can be combine into 1 batch file.
This is merely a KID REACTS TO DOS video.
no
+Hammid Bollocks. He knows about it and is exploring it. Do we really want people forgetting DOS?
Also, this may help him to learn UNIX-like shells and PowerShell.
+mstcrow5429 forgetting dos is bad. i still to this day find dos very helpful on my computer for various things though in an emulator most of the time
+mstcrow5429 .no but the bitch is acting like "Google is better than Book".
HOLY FUCKING SHIT THATS SO ORIGINAL AND TRUE. Seriously he gave up on reading a fucking book and went to internet.
you're right, but still entertaining though
What is with the hyper fast diskette drive at 10:40
normally it would take ages to read files
***** Yes, 2.88 mb floppy diskettes DID exist for a short time, but never really caught on. Your computer BIOS had to support the format (and most didn't) AND you had to have the specific ED (Extended Density) drive and ED diskette to reach that capacity. The ED drives could read the older 720kb and 1.44mb floppies, but could not write to them, IIRC (somebody correct me if I'm wrong; I might be confusing this with the old 3M/Imation LS120 'SuperFloppy'). The 2.88mb format was pricey (both the drives and the disks) and had limited support and practical use, especially in light of the introduction of the Iomega Zip format, which was even more expensive but had vastly superior storage capacity.
xaenon That was the thing I was wondering about. "how the hell did he get 2.88 MB floppies, they weren't that common back then and geht some working today must be a pain in the a**"
Then I saw him handling with a 5 1/4'' floppy and than it was clear: He just uses the emulation of his VM software.
And also, all the .COM files asked for are usually on the DOS installation floppies (there are 3 of them).
(If anyone wonders: I'm going th the same torment to build a vintage system for the old classics. Running in emulation is fine, but not the real thing.)
You're a smart kid. I gotta tip my hat to you for even attempting Dos in this day and age. Well done, you'll go far!
Nice video. Trip down memory lane for me.
DOS was awesome..., until i changed to Linux, it does what MS-DOesn't...

I loved DOOM 95 and Wolfenstein and miss those games. Yeah they are hokey by todays standars BUT they were state of the art at one time and I get all nostalgic when I think of them. I used to create DOOM and Wolfenstein style games back in the day and it was fun! If you were around at the time you would be addicted to them. The games you love today will be what our 80's and 90's games are to you now., in 15 to 20 years :-)
***** I cannot +1 that comment enough.
Damn right! I have it on my tablet as well, but I use the on-screen controls (which really aren't that bad if we're both talking about the same Beloko source port) or I use a cable that allows use of the USB receiver for my Logitech F710.
Thanks for the video, you definitely have talent for creating exciting and quality videos.
You should have tried Descent and Terminal Velocity - I found them exciting at years back then. And music was pretty good in those games. But yeah, getting full sound support on DOS was tricky - you needed right drivers and know correct port numbers and card emulation type (usually most cards were Sound Blaster compatible) and messing with config and autoexec files. But once you got the settings right, most games worked just fine.
i really enjoyed watching your video. it was good to see someone younger empowering an early operating system.
it was interesting to see GEM again, however by 1994 we had already seen multiple releases of Microsoft Windows. Windows 3.0 came out in 1990 and Windows 3.1 came out in 1992. Both of these releases were installed as applications on top of DOS in exactly the same way GEM runs.
as a DOS user after 1990, we would all have Windows 3.0 installed. This came with all the basic accessory applications you would expect (like notepad and write). Microsoft Office version 4.x was also available - this gave you a full office suite on Windows 3.
thanks for sharing your review and thoughts :-)
Here are some interesting things to know about if you're interested in using DOS as a serious environment, even if just in emulation:
MPXPLAY is a program that plays MP3 files (and WAV and OGG and several others), but you have to know information about your emulated sound card. If you are using DOSEMU, you can see this information in the configuration file. There must be some sort of emulated sound card with support for digital output active in the emulation configuration in order to use MPXplay.
PictView will do better at showing image files if you know more about what kind of graphics card you are emulating, so that it knows how many colors it can display and at what resolution. Again, for DOSEMU users this information will be in the configuration file. VGA is considered the lowest common denominator, and even though it only supports 16 colors at 640×480, it also has a 256-color mode at 320×200 resolution, and supports EGA and CGA graphics modes for those programs written before VGA was developed.
Microsoft actually has allowed Word 5.5 for DOS to be made available for free download. It has the centering and bold and italic and underline features you want, but when it is running in text mode, it cannot show the text effects on screen; you have to go into graphical print preview, or use a graphic mode for the screen display, to see them. Otherwise, the effects are shown by using different colors of text.
Believe it or not, there is a web browser for DOS. Two, in fact. Lynx is a well-known Linux text-mode browser that has a DOS version. There is also a graphical browser called Arachne (supposedly pronounced uh-ruk-neh). But any type of internet connection, whether used with Lynx or Arachne, requires a network card to be active in the emulation configuration and an appropriate driver to be loaded.
Other tips: You can get more text onscreen in DOS by using the command 'mode con lines=50' (again, assuming you have at least VGA graphics). This will affect other DOS applications like Edit and QBasic but not programs that have their own preference settings, like Word 5.5.
Adis make sense more.
Your comment is really nice and informative, but I don't think he's really interested in using DOS at all, other than to make a funny video about it.
Crazy Cars 2 requires a 386 or it will run WAY too fast
Adis - Ad He used a VMware virtual machine. Something like DOSBOX will have properly emulated the game. Also, the turbo button slows down the CPU to 4.77 MHz.
Didn’t faster computers back in the mid 80’s to late 90’s come with a turbo button to slow the clock speed?
Best video by far Phillip!
you are great i have not used DOS in decades, greetings from México, i really love this video, by the way in México the DOS could be in spanish but the command were exactly like the english version.
Many old DOS games are really great it's just that many people that didn't grow up in that time or actually had the chance to truly play them won't understand how fun they can be. I still love some of the old DOS games and it's sad that many of the newer OS won't run MS-DOS games. Games back then DOS, PS, SEGA, N64, NES, etc I think are the best for many reasons. You had to actually think on how to get past levels, you had to learn the controls or special moves. Today you just need to look it up online. I feel that today the gaming community is really just holding players hand too much. Giving you the move sets. Telling you exactly where to go and how to get there.
My first computer OS was DOS (not 6.22, even tho i remember when 6.22 came, was a big deal).
Still own that PC actualy :P
That was the OS I was using when I was a kid like you. But I still use today, sometimes, thanks to the DosBox emulator.
Doom was the first game I had that felt so real. And it still does, today.
So much fun watching youngling battle ancient OS which was regular thing at the time :D Thumbs up!
I got a real kick out of watching DOS drive you crazy. Having survived DOS I thought I would offer you some pointers. For example, playing .wav or .mp3 files. Even with Windows, Windows itself does not play the file, Windows Media Player (or another audio player app) does. So you would need to find a DOS equivalent. I can't think of any at the moment. Most were distributed with the sound cards of the day, since sound wasn't build onto the motherboard as it is today.
Also, in the drawing program you were using, many of the resolution selections were hardware specific, eg. Tandy. These certainly won't work for you on a modern computer. But sticking to the generics like VGA, EGA and whatever resolutions might still work as you saw, having found one.
Also, it's not totally fair to try to compare a text-based OS with a graphical OS. Also, to become frustrated with DOS while producing the video is unfair to both the OS and yourself. You have to remember, DOS had a moderate learning curve and was not at all intuitive. But then, neither is Linux or any other version of Unix today and they have add-on GUIs as well, like adding GEM to DOS.
Your mouse driver: it needs to be added to your config files in order to be loaded with DOS at each startup/reboot.
There was a lot of proprietary hardware back in the day as well. That's why there are so many drivers for particular hardware and hardware versions. You would always have to select a generic driver and hope for the best if running DOS on a modern computer.
You say that the old word processing programs were not very good, but it appears you didn't really allow yourself enough time to learn them. And you felt the games were not exciting enough and the graphics poor. If you are going to do this type of video (and I did find it fun and entertaining) you must be able to lower your expectations from the start. You have to be able to allow yourself the opportunity to go back in time and accept things as they come; After all, those graphics and sounds and word processing features were state-of-the-art in their day. Don't try to make them fit with their modern counterparts.
If you are keeping a DOS machine (or boot partition) up, I'd hope you would take the time to learn the command line OS and some of the apps. Then, after a few months of learning, do another review. It would be interesting to hear if there was any difference in your opinions.
What are the specs of the machine you were running this on? One thing I found most impressive, was the speed of most of the operations. DOS could be terribly slow at times, even as Windows is today.
Thanks for an interesting trip down memory lane. If you do decide to do a follow-up, let us know.
Wow, all that info is pretty interesting. :)
Regarding his complaints about graphics, he runs another channel called AstralPhaser where he does put aside his knowledge about the current graphics. :)
***** Stop trying to find me! :P
This was way more hilarious to watch than a FineBros episode of "Kids React To..."
i have to agree. i love the part where he says he wants to kill dos right now. lol it can be frustrating if you are trying out for the first time.
i never new dos was the inspiration for alot of the commands and functionality in computercraft... very neat!
UA-cam randomly threw me here. Great Video!
the command to display text files is: type.
so you would.
type tasklist.txt
I got a real kick out of watching the vid I started typing replies before I watch the whole thing. ha... Just started to switch over to linux (ubuntu) in Jan 2014. Terminal window under linux does much the same thing. Command lines are a little different but has great potential.
I think the cars were going on wacky because the game was meant to be run on a slower processor
yes but he has an old computer that came with MS-DOS
that music was pretty epic, especially that random one
I remember when I was a kid and win95 crashed. I was stuck in ms-dos for more than a year. I used edit to open/write documents, and most of the commands to get around. I got really fluent in it. I miss those days.
17:30 The problem is probably that you have such a fast CPU, the game runs at whatever GHz
4:20 (blaze it) DOS is all caps since its an acronym for "Disk Operating System"
I was born in '87. So I learned enough about DOS that I would not be having the issues you had figuring some of this out. :P
Although displaying text files in DOS (without using an application to do so) is something I haven't had a chance of trying. Usually what I learned of DOS came out of necessity as it was never my primary OS even though I had used computers at the time that might have worked fine using just DOS. :P
I used to be pretty good at creating batch files. (Files with the .bat extension that automates DOS commands and such).
I probably forgot a lot of the finer details now, but DOS is one of those things I still have a good understanding of. :D
I liked your video great job.
"I'm going to attempt to use DOS 6.22 from 9094" lol
And Crazy Cars 2 runs like it just did a line of cocaine because your computer is MUCH too fast to run it. Most of those old games have a speed limiter, but some, like Crazy Cars 2, do not. This is why I use DOSBox.
your introl goes good with the vid
Well, this was a lot of fun. :) A bit frustrating to watch as an experienced IT guy but after watching the whole video I must say it brought back a lot of memories and I appreciate the effort of using (even as prop) those 3.5" and 5.25" floppies.
There are obviously more software that can achieve various goals but regarding the tasks in this video here are a few tips:
#5. Check Wikipedia for CGA/EGA/VGA and look out for details related to numbers of colors and resolutions. Back in the 80's/90's the graphics cards were extremely rudimentary, so it made a lot of sense to ask the user about these details, especially that the graphics hardware were not as standardized as it is today so you couldn't just detect what's in your PC and run the program/game with automatic settings.
Regarding the issues with Crazy Cars, that's normal for games and apps that used the CPU cycles for timing actions. It just makes things run crazy-fast on faster processors.
#9. Photodex SEA was an awesome image viewer but it could even play movies (FLC, FLI and AVI) and WAV and VOC audio files. Give it a try.
#10. Back in the MS-DOS days MP3's didn't exist. Most sounds were WAV and VOC and if you wanted music you listened to MOD, MID or XT files. "Visual Player" was amazing back then and "Fast Tracker" was also very popular. These you can simply check out in UA-cam.
Thanks for making this video. :) Good luck!
Ikr. The GUI is just like gem. An interface to hide the nasty stuff.
In the background, we have a fire hazard.. What kind of power strip is that?
not bad at all. the weak point in power strips are usually the wires - this kind of port multiplier eliminates that.
This was fun to watch
I still use DOS 6.22. I never did learn much about it, but I did learn the basic commands to install games etc.. Love the old retro games
Why didn't you play Elder Scrolls: Arena? D:
no classic shooters have goodguys or tutorials or bad stories just shooting shooting and shooting
Why this video has so much dislike ?
it is very good and useful !
I weren't searching DOS stuff, but old games I used to play anyhow. Nice video bring back memories from good old days.
1st command HELP gives you list of command in DOS and pretty much any textbased OS
2nd TYPE is the command that shows your textfile
3nd There were lots of apps that made things easier to do. ie DOSSHELL and others "filecommanders" etc. Plus full gfx UI programs.
4nd IIRC Mouse command did load mouse drivers so the gfx ui programs like edit did have mouse enabled after it.
5th then there were these powertools that are usefull even today at times like output piping like TYPE name1.txt >> name2.txt
6th DOS Extenders were rather common since the basic dos were rather narrow in functionality. Something like 4DOS by JP software were nice, with really really good documentation and stonishing scripting functionalities, plus colorcoded DIR commands, TAB picking of files/directories etc.
7th Scripting with .bat / .btm files !!
How do you know if something is a good guy or a bad guy in Doom?
I know how! It moves it dies! ;)
12:17 me before learning how to strafe.
The intro fits very well with Dos vids
How do you get DOS to be stretched to fit the screen? I also use VMWare Workstation 12 Player, and when I open my DOS virtual machine and put it in full screen mode, the resolution and size of the VM stays the same. I've looked all over the menu bar, and I can't find any view or zoom option. How do you do it?
Play dungeon keeper and you will take that "I hate dos games" back instantly.
*Never used DOS before*
Even if you never used the OS for it's purposes, you should atleast know the commands
NT is heavily based off of DOS and NT is the kernel for windows
Also, with doom
once installed you need to run the setup in the installed DIR and manually configure your soundcard
that and (some oldfags may hate me for this) but you should reconfigure your controls to:
-WASD for movement
-left/right arrow turn
-ctrl or space shoot
-shift for run, always on if you can
*****
I meant the actual command line is very similar, it should be something that anyone who uses computers should have a basic knowledge of, not saying you should be able to write batch scripts but atleast know navigation and directory management, also wouldn't hurt to know how to use some basic networking commands
***** fucking liar, NT is nothing but 'remake'
***** NT's cmd.exe (better known as Command Prompt, for anyone else that happens to be reading) is very similar to the DOS prompt. Basic commands like CD and DIR work either exactly the same or very similarly on both. Although NT brought along the new kernel that made Windows' UI much less of a program that you could install alongside your OS and much more of an OS you install on your computer.
Blue Oyster Your idiocy is showing.
going from DOS to GEM is like going from purgatory to paradise :-)
Great video
MS-DOS Is 10 Times More Productive Than Windows 7.
Definitely was. People got more WORK done with it. It's all you had to do on it! LOL!
whats up with the intro, lol.
the intro was cringe af
your face is cringy af
DuckU0 wat
Zapbull But is was so 90's, like the OS. Rather fitting.
Good Work
DOS is so old and decrepit, or so you'd think. There are many utilities available that turn DOS from the OS equivalent of that weird old man who lived down the street to a veritable powerhouse. There are utilities that allow DOS to browse the web with pictures enabled, there are utilities that allow DOS to use the same filesystem as Windows 7 (or 8.x, Vista, XP, 2000, NT 4, NT 3.xx, you get it), utilities that allow DOS to utilize DVD drives (for data copying only, obviously - - DOS couldn't handle video if it wanted to on its own, though I'm sure DVD players exist for DOS, and if not, someone should totally get on porting VLC to DOS), with certain utilities, DOS can use mice and USB flash drives. There are GUIs for it (namely Windows 3.xx, but it can't handle the updates one would have to apply to DOS to make it usable in today's enviornment, so my choice would surprisingly be either DOSSHELL or Volkov Commander).
All of this turns DOS into a reliable recovery resource for when most everything else fails (or you just like command lines for some ungodly reason).
The freedos project is still active.
That too!
Jacob Turner And it can handle long file names.
So can regular MS-DOS 6.22 with DOSLFN.
Racing games were hugely popular.
The car game isn't working because it works off of the CPU clock speed.
Obviously the CPUs work much faster now -- too fast for the game.
Just press the turbo button lol
I've got every dos from 3 on around somewhere, basement, maybe. Oh, and Win 3.1 too. Dos 6.22 came on 3 disks, I think (compressed). How do you get around the dos cylinder limit for the HD? Entertaining at least.
nice video also where did you get a computer that can use floppy disks?
I'm pretty certain that racing game didn't have a clock or any technology like that, meaning it would run way too fast on CPU's which it wasn't designed to run on.
OMG, cracked games! Can u hear the deverloppers and publishers cry?
They can't but a new ferrari this year!
( sorry for the necropost)
Most games don't earn enough money to buy you a Ferrari...
Hanz Kranz ?
I like the music in 40:00
You really return me to my old days. I was only 4 years old and can only open games by enter the command stored in my head :)
That intro music touches me deep in my ear
well it beats windows vista ... lol x
No, it doesn't.
MrSmwHacker Why use Windows when you can use any variant of UNIX, like GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, or MINIX? The list is still printing after 10 years.
jjovereats Uh, because I'm a PC-Gamer and don't want to be limited by the amount of software that doesn't work on Linux.
I also have been using Windows for the last 9 years, so I'm used to it.
Fuck you then. BAI
:( A 12 year old insulted me over the Internetz. :*(
The games are old. But look at msdos its a black screen with text. For its time those games are great!
I don't remember which Windows it was, but there were versions were you could full-screen your DOS box by entering ALT-ENTER
"They didn't have resources to create amazing games back then"...
You just went full derptard, never go full derptard.
Thanks for the upload.
;D
Such a good video
