Our governments and politicians use our passion to each other but the public of each country know them and dont believe them. We have no problems to each other. I lived in Greece from 2001 to 2005 in Athens - and went to one basketball game. It's nuts. My ears rang for two days. Non-stop chants and standing/jumping. I actually would not go to a football (soccer) game - too dangerous. Really.
I lived near/10 blocks from the Panathinaikos football stadium, and whenever I stepped outside, I knew when there was a home game: I smelled tear gas. Fans would (overnight, when there was no one there, thankfully) Molotov cocktail opposing fans' club houses around the dates of important matches. It's all part of the club system: for example Aris, AEK, Olympiakos all have a football team, basketball team, volleyball team, etc. Men's and women's in many sports.
As for the craziest places to see a game? Greece, Turkey, Israel, the Balkans. There is a fun article (maybe 4 years old, from SI?) where a reporter was interviewing Luka, Ntilikina, and some other foreign rookies, and he asked them if they were intimidated playing at the Forum, MSG, Boston Garden, etc., and they just about laughed at him - as in, are you kidding us. Look for some of the videos of ex Panathinaikos and AEK Greece players from America, talking about playing there. (Here is one - ua-cam.com/video/pnE5sU-qDaY/v-deo.html .)Soldiers escorting their buses to the arenas, having cell phones and "D" batteries chucked at them, et. al. It is DIFFERENT. (But I confess, I am looking to retire in Greece in a few years - a great lifestyle despite the quirks.)

In Europe sport is seen as a religion. When it comes to football (soccer) especially Europe and South America are up there. It is like going to war. Basketball is loved in Europe as well as some other sports and mostly people who support their club in football will sometimes support the same club in other sports. People in Europe were tribal once upon a time and that shifted to sports. The tribal instincts will be awake during matches.
The players are used to it...and a lot of them like this type of atmosphere though.
The damaging stuff you mentioned is sometimes too much I agree with that. I guess you watched a video about Ultras or Hooligans.

The US choreogaphies are good but they are not team related. In Europe, every team the fans and musicians have created chants and songs for the team they love. We have Flags (some created by fans) and if you look a our organized choreos they would blown your mind (I only see my mentioned choreos in football).

Imagine to play in the US, a famous sports game and the crowd is bored as f***. It must be a very sad feeling to get no support, to have nobody to fire your team up. Seems to me like the americans are overfed with entertainment by great sportsmen.
The truth is there is nothing like the Greek spirit when it comes to their fans in both fotball & basketball but I wish the same could be said about the national teams for both sports, we have our moments but man do they need to take this spirit from the fans and apply that into better performance in the future because they have been lack lusting in recent past games.

In europe u not care about the sports as much. It can be football basketball or 2 kids playing marbles. That is not important. What is important is where are u from and what is our history? If our history works out there probably wont be any fighting ect. But when we do than any game we gonna play means war again. Get revange in some kind of stupid way. Its more grounded in the working class having theire daily struggle and buildup frustration that comes out in a game in the weekend. So we use each other to blow off some steam. In the usa u dont really have that its more about the team.
