It's almost a reflection of the piece itself being that the game is literally called Risk of Rain. This is one of those songs that felt like the stage was specially built for this and only this song. You don't get much rest in this but I find this stage particularly interesting because you've pretty much reached a stability where you are either outpacing the difficulty or dying a horrible death so in a sense, you are either the rain thats washing away the land and it's creatures or this stage will be the final resting place for your survivor (it also helps that this is the last stage in the loop that leads into the boss stage which has Con Letitud Ponderosa) so you have this epic showdown hanging over your head and you're at a point where it's do or die. This song reflects that so amazingly, especially if you look at the ending of Formally known as purple, it sounds like you're ascending almost. Or the fact that despite just trying to survive, they are in fact killing hundreds of creatures on a place where we never needed to be.

Chris Christodoulou is unironically my favorite music composer of all time, silly as that may sound. No other music, except for maybe Joe Hisaishi's, comes even close to impacting me on such an emotional level and listening to many of these Ror2 pieces with good audio often puts a tear in my eye.

Much like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for music the beauty is in the ear of the listener. Chris' music is extremely unique and he is unbelievably talented.
It's such a strange feeling to hear this in-game. It's disconnected from the chaos happening around you, but it also fits so well with the beautiful vista of the level you hear it on. It's also the level that has the portal that can lead you to the moon, where you hear that other song, "...con lentitud poderosa." Do you go to the moon and face Mithrix, or do you keep going and looping? Sometimes it kicks in just right while you're at your power peak and it has this almost divine, epic feeling, watching hordes of monsters melt and combust before you. It's magical.
The rain Formerly Known as Purple takes place on stage 5, the place on Petrichor 5 that has been effected most by the war between the 2 Brothers Providence and Myrthrix. The location to the primordial teleporter is located. The place Providence said goodbye to his brother as he locked him on the moon. The story of risk of rain 1 and 2 is the story of a brother who loves life, and a brother who has great ambition, and their creations made to destroy and to bring beauty. "I never wanted to see you cry, I only wanted to see you laughing in the Purple rain." The very sentiment the Brothers had for each other. The bitter ending, and now we go to the moon, Providence being long dead, to kill Mythrix, who's madness has corrupted him. A creature of hate and resentment that we must bring peace to in order to be saved ourselves.
I think this excerpt really fits to the song. This is from the lore of "A moment, fractured", where Providence, the brother of the final boss betrays Mithrix and leaves him trapped on the moon "...And yet I see your somber gaze will not lift. Please, take the gate. Step foot on another world. Reap the rewards of your toil. Prove to the universe you are free! I cannot bear to see you in such a pitiable mood on such a joyous occasion."
Fun fact: This song plays on the stage Sky Meadow, a return of the stage from the first Risk of Rain and to match, the theme too is a remake/remaster of the original theme, "Chanson d'Automne..". While the original comes off a bit calmer, the remake "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" has a bit more energy to it. Additionally, it shows the growth of Chris Christodoulou and his skill as a composer.
If you look at the rain motif for all the titles, it both ties to the mechanics and theming of the game. Difficulty scales over time, and your options for ending a “run” are either fighting a god, looping stages until you die or obliterating yourself at a pillar at the edge of time. Fighting an inevitable death is a theme of both gameplay and story, and the idea of seeing rain incoming and slowly growing overhead is perfect symbology for this. So your purple rain analysis makes me think Chris saw a common theming between the two songs, and made the title an homage.
The purple rain similarities are very intentional, Chris even intentionally used synths, drums and keys that were used at the time, there is an in depth commentary on his yt channel that describes his process but damn is it incredible
my favorite thing about listening to this song is remembering how there are no guitars in this game's soundtrack, just synths made to sound like guitars
Chris remains one of my favorite composers (I have no better words for him) and I eagerly anticipate any rumors of new music from him. The fact that Hopoo Games are doing a remaster of Risk of Rain 1 with *new music* from Chris Christodoulou makes me immensely happy.
The amazing thing about this song, is that it's not the ONLY song in the OST that bangs this hard. They might as well be dead, antarctic oscillation, the face of the deep, and pretty much the entire soundtrack has completely different atmosphere while still feeling like a perfectly fitting track in these albums. I love the Risk of Rain 2 (and 1!) soundtracks, and I'm so glad you love them too!
MarcoMeatball The music analysis channel that's equally likely to give you the most heartfelt musical analysis around, or just jam out in front of the camera and visibly appreciate the music for a solid eight minutes. I love it.
UA-cam recommended me this OST randomly, and I gave it a shot despite knowing nothing about it. Now, I have listened to it more times than I can count.
If you're down to listen to more of Chris's music (which I'm sure we all are) I recommend "The Face of the Deep" from the Risk of Rain 2 DLC soundtrack. Great final boss track, and one of my personal favorites from Chris
Oh, I didnt know about those lyrics in the original song. Those lyrics are ABSOLUTELY Mithrix (the final boss) talking to his brother Providence (the final boss of risk of rain 1) after being trapped on the moon. I very much recommend looking up The Grovetenders lore video on ROR2, it does a brilliant job at explaining the lore as a very interesting story. Additionally, if you're making these kinds of videos on ROR2, I would absolutely ADORE a video discussing "You're Gunna Need A Bigger Ukulele"
Hands down my favorite track in the game. Also thank you Marco, I'm glad I'm not the only one that cannot physically stay still when this song comes on.
This track is definitely more related to the lore of the game. There's a great video by Wandering Astronaut that does a great getting to the heart of the story, but in VERY bare bones synopsis, its about two brothers born with godlike powers trying to create something great, but differing viewpoint cause them to turn on one another. If I remember correctly, the Sky Meadows, the stage this track plays, is where they played as children.
Yes! I'm so glad you covered this, this is one of my favorite songs from a game. Its amazing and i love hearing your take on the song, always shows me some things i never knew
Now I know I’ve never commented before, but I would absolutely love to see a reaction to “Astral Birth - Void”’s theme from “Kirby Star Allies” Before reacting to it, I would recommend listening to some others, especially “Green greens” as that theme has become Kirby’s “Theme” and was the first Kirby song ever made I do hope you decide to take up my suggestion :)
Thank you Marco, you made me realize the link between the lyrics and the tragedy of the story of Mithrix and Providence. Somehow, i feel like they both wanted to avoid causing any sorrow to the other, as for the pain ... Beautiful breakdown of the magestic work of @astronautdown
I would suggest, Chris Christodoulou is one of my favorite musicians as well. But if you have not heard it, he himself considers 'The Sea Will Claim Everything Part II' as his best song. And it's truly beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing. I completely agree with why he loves that song so much, and would suggest it to you.
The thing I love about ror music is the increidble subtlety that it achieves without great conplexity. The quality of the sound itself is the focal point. Sort of like those paintings that seem to just be a single solid color, or a red stripe on a white canvas. But looking closer you see so much more. You see the care and painstaking work out into it.
Man I am so glad to see more of this. Chris has done such a phenomenal job on this OST, also please check out his breakdowns of his music on his own channel! He explains a lot of his thought processes behind the whole OST
goddamn watching you jam is satisfying. also knowing the lyric comparisons and the lore behind the game.. like theres a shit tonne of very tragic lore in-universe and your role in the game towards accelerating the planet's future into an even more tragic state.
When I first listened to this song, the title reminded me of Purple Rain. I wasn't sure if that was an intentional reference but damn now knowing it is makes me appreciate this track and Christodoulou even more. And also Prince's Purple Rain, I love that song too.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS! this is my favourite song of the entire ost, im glad you were able to react to this, and Ik I already reccomended this in a previous video, but I highly reccomend doing a playthrough of sayonara wild hearts, its just an hour long game with some certified bangers, not a single bad song in there. And the lyrics are amazing and relate well to the feelings and story the game portrays
Yup , this one's a banger , every time you get to that area in the game i try to prolong the stage as long as possible just to listen to the full song.
Maybe hopping on the Christodolou train, another one that I'd like your take on is "They might as well be dead", I believe it was added during the DLC update for the Sundered Grooves biome.
Risk of Rain games are amazing, specially the second one. I totally didn't expect this to be covered here, but I'm very positively surprised!! I had forgotten how good this game's OST is haha. Knowing the meaning behind the name was the icing on the cake
I love your musical analysis videos where you stop every so often for deep and expansive pieces that constantly change But I love it just as much when you just listen to the whole song and vibe literally 100 percent of the time while listening to the song because it's just that captivating
Wow this video made me appreciate the thought Chris puts into his music, during the lyrics breakdown part, the meaning you described all made sense to the story
I would love to see you cover The Raindrop That Fell To The Sky from Chris. In his album commentary, he described it as a song that meant a lot to him, one that sorta came directly from his soul. It's also the only song he's ever composed using his own voice, up until that point.
I always enjoy Marco's exploration into music pieces more than other channels reactions, both because of his in-depth music knowledge but also because he fully immerses himself in and enjoys the music first, then breaks down exactly why it was so cool. Keep up the amazing work man!
My favourite song in this game no question about it, it is such a soothing listen, I have spent countless hours listening to it and I feel I'll still never tire of it, just beautiful You know, this track would normally make me feel relaxed and I never stopped to think about the sad tones to it, almost like the way the song is made makes my mind think of a soothing song rather than a sad one when the sadness is so apparent but I think the kinda experimental jazz start and the fact the sadder sounding part raises in volume rather than dipping does well to make you feel more hopeful than sad.
After listening to con lentitud pederosa from the 100k celebration stream I went back to RoR2 and started jamming more than playing the game haha~ The one hour+ long video of Chris talking about the soundtrack is inspiring, this guy is passionate and knows what he is doing, truly inspiring! Just like how Marco "lives" the music~ ♪ NB: This song makes me feel like I'm on a trip to the unknown, getting more and more difficult as the music ramps up. Around the drop half-way through the music, you realize something very important. Like a deep thought your mind doesn't invest in. You keep pushing yourself and go forward to try to reach your end-goal, whatever it may be ; and as you make your way through the end of your journey, you sense that something changed in you, like something in this long voyage really makes you feel different. The realization of a huuuuge change but long after it happens (represented by the slow and quiet ending).
Finally! I've been waiting for you to review this song forever. This is my ultimate favorite song from risk of rain 2, as everyone's saying listening to this song in game makes you don't want to end the level it's just so chill and makes you forget that the boss level literally a step away from this groovy song. Masterpiece ❤️
Dude. Just watched some of your channel for the first time a few weeks ago after your appearance on the Grinding Gear podcast, and I just wanted to say, before even watching, that title is EXACTLY how I felt the moment I played the patch where they added Sky Meadow. This song just never stops being incredible.
What a great track this is, many of my runs have died to this track because of just wanting to vibe the whole time. It definitely has a particular air to it; the stage is a sort of crossroads of a long journey and it has a sort of catharsis to it in a way… There’s a similar track on the Haven OST by Danger that as a similar feel, and is very reminiscent… but I’m failing to recollect what it was. :(
You should gove Risk of Rain 1's Coalescence because that is their version of melancholic progression thats just amazing. Chris may have improved on his composition, but Coalescence proves that he has always been a great composer not losing to time
Chris imo would make me feel like I'm down to earth on another planet. His involvement in the Risk of Rain franchise is practically molded to the point where if you change the soundtrack, it wouldn't feel as great.
Oh BOY can you connect those lyrics to the game. The Rain Formerly Known as Purple plays on the stage Sky Meadows (the area is very purple btw), and is one of the more important areas in the game. The stage is unique in that it is the last stage before moving on to the final boss (or looping but thats a gameplay element more than a narrative one). But to really go into why its so important I'll have to provide a little (a lot) of context. Ok so Risk of Rain is a story of two brothers, Providence and Mythrix(the final bosses of RoR & RoR2 respectively). They are both godlike beings capable of creating great wonders on the planet petrichor V. Mythrix is the older brother, calculating and filled with ambition, while Providence is calm and compassionate. initially these two were inseparable, but as they grew older so did these Idiosyncrasies. Mythrix prefers his great constructs over the sanctity of life, and often mocks and shames his brother for allowing the various creatures to grow and spread over the planet. Mythix's ambition becomes his primary driving force, as he works to prefect his constructs and designs. Providence on the other only really wants to see his brother happy, and helps in his brother's work purely to spend time with him. The last thing the two brothers made together was a great teleportation device. They needed the teleporter because they cannot travel through space, like physically, being outside of a planet's gravity well is lethal for them. This teleporter will grant them the ability to go to other worlds and journey across the stars. Providence thinks that they will be used to help other lifeforms, to aid the rest of the galaxy with their gifts, but Mythrix had other intentions. Mythrix intended to conquer, to trample all who opposed him with his perfect designs. Providence still loved his brother, and only wanted to see him laughing, but seeing Mythrix's glee at the idea of subjugating all those beneath him tore him apart. Providence sees his brother for what he has become, and how much of a threat he is to the rest of the galaxy. Providence tricks Mythrix into using the teleporter, trapping him on the moon. Sky Meadows is where this took place, the only teleporter capable of reaching the moon is located here. Mythrix's design uses a lot of blue, and Providence's is mostly red, fitting that the last place they saw each other would be soaked in purple rain.
This song is now for 2 years in a row my most listened to song on spotify and it Will definitely be in my top 5 this year. Thank you Chris for making such amazing music.
Listening to you talk about the original lyrics for purple rain definitely made me think of this game's story, specifically the stories of the brothers Providence and Mitrhix. Providence is the final boss of Risk of Rain 1, while Mithrix is the final boss of ROR2. Mithrix and Providence are both these godlike beings that are creators, and they had a falling out because Mithrix felt like Providence loved and cared about his creations more than he cared about his own brother. Mithrix saw Providence's creations as lesser beings, beings that weren't worth the time and effort of gods. Providence preferred to create beings of flesh and blood, animals and such. Mithrix preferred to create machines, which further divided the two brothers. Eventually this falling out gets to a point where Providence banishes Mithrix to the moon (which is the final stage of the game), where he is trapped there to fester in his own hatred for his brother. I feel like lyrics like "I never meant to cause you any sorrow / I never meant to cause you any pain" are very applicable to Mithrix, since all he really wanted from his brother was the same amount of love that he felt for him.
Wish I could like this multiple times, one for the great Marco vibe dance, one for the great breakdown, and one for the Mugatu clip because Zoolander is one of the best movies to exist.
I think when It comes to the tragic lyrics, its about the two brothers who have created this planet, they hate eachother but deep down id love to believe they are sorry. I may not know everything about the lore but I think I'm close enough :)
They do still love each other. Mithrix's last words are calling out for his brother and providence often stared at the moon at night. Neither wanted to hurt the other, but circumstance and belief tore them apart.
As a fan of Risk of Rain 2. There's something nostalgic about The Rain Formerly Known as Purple, even though I can't quite put my finger on what. The stage features a Primordial Teleporter, which connects the planet Petrichor V with its moon, Mithrix's prison. In Risk of Rain, this teleporter was the site of a major betrayal by Providence against Mithrix. Providence, trying to protect monsters living on the planet, tricked Mithrix by locking the teleporter just after he had traveled to the moon, effectively trapping him there. In the present day, The Rain Formerly Known as Purple is the scene of a fierce battle. The Safe Travels crew makes a last stand against overwhelming forces and suffers heavy losses, including multiple ships. As some members of The Safe Travels go through the Primordial Teleporter, they discover a captured rescue shuttle on the moon that's surrounded by a force field. It's possible that this is the same shuttle that sent out the distress signal that brought The Safe Travels to Petrichor V in the first place. That's my take, if anything is wrong don't blame me I'm just a casual gamer. Do you only take recommendations through patron or youtube comments also have a chance to appear in the future? If so I'd like to hear your thoughts on Library of Ruina. Maybe a Track called Early Battle.
I was born after the times when disco was popular, but this music reminds me of this very atmosphere of disco clubs. Like a slow dance, which gradually turns into active movement and calms down towards the end. Therefore, I always want to dance to this track.

While the original comes off a bit calmer, the remake "The Rain Formerly Known as Purple" has a bit more energy to it. Additionally, it shows the growth of Chris Christodoulou and his skill as a composer.
This and "They might as well be dead" are my favorite tracks from this ost
...and his reaction was electric.
Agreed (Also is that a Ralsei PFP omg)
Thank you for reminding me that this is my favorite soundtrack of all time. Chris Christodoulou is a genius of a composer
MarcoMeatball
The music analysis channel that's equally likely to give you the most heartfelt musical analysis around, or just jam out in front of the camera and visibly appreciate the music for a solid eight minutes.
I love it.
the best part of this sone is the moment it starts, because its just this massive build up to everything coming together, its such a jam
UA-cam recommended me this OST randomly, and I gave it a shot despite knowing nothing about it. Now, I have listened to it more times than I can count.
You should try the game too! My favorite of all time.
I'll buy it for you if you cant.
@@HomicidalTh0r Appreciate the thought lol. It's all good.
This is my go to relax/feel good song. absolutely love it
when the song doesn't get paused you know it's a banger
2:05 oh lawd the spirit of prince is taking over his body taking off the jacket because it’s getting hot and heavy I see it
Chris is an actual musical genius. Fell in love with him a decade ago and he's been haunting me since.
If you're down to listen to more of Chris's music (which I'm sure we all are) I recommend "The Face of the Deep" from the Risk of Rain 2 DLC soundtrack. Great final boss track, and one of my personal favorites from Chris
I'll check it out!
Well now you HAVE to do Coalescence
quite literally one of the best songs i've heard in my life, i renember just staying still in awe while it played the first time i got it ingame
once that electric guitar hits, the track just ascends into a completely new experience. loved the video Marco, can't wait for more!
Chris is straight up a genius
This track is definitely more related to the lore of the game. There's a great video by Wandering Astronaut that does a great getting to the heart of the story, but in VERY bare bones synopsis, its about two brothers born with godlike powers trying to create something great, but differing viewpoint cause them to turn on one another. If I remember correctly, the Sky Meadows, the stage this track plays, is where they played as children.
Hopoo Games: Okay, so we just need a good soundtrack, you don't have to-
Chris Christodoulou: 🔥🔥🔥🎸🔥🔥🔥
This video has such class i loved the words you had to say for this song at the end i subscribed INSTANTLY
The perfect song to be oneshot by a Brass Contraption to
yesss soo happy to see you making videos on this game
"Some stay dry and others feel the pain"
Yes! I'm so glad you covered this, this is one of my favorite songs from a game. Its amazing and i love hearing your take on the song, always shows me some things i never knew
4:47 that's definitely me when I hear the electro guitar part
Now I know I’ve never commented before, but I would absolutely love to see a reaction to “Astral Birth - Void”’s theme from “Kirby Star Allies”
Before reacting to it, I would recommend listening to some others, especially “Green greens” as that theme has become Kirby’s “Theme” and was the first Kirby song ever made
I do hope you decide to take up my suggestion :)
Этот трек будто отправляет тебя в далекое путешествие по неизведанному миру.
Your shirt is a vibe for this song.
If Chris ever had a live concert the ground would shake due to how much of a banger the songs are
Waiting for this video since you heard it on stream, risk of rain 2 rules.
goddamn watching you jam is satisfying.
also knowing the lyric comparisons and the lore behind the game.. like theres a shit tonne of very tragic lore in-universe and your role in the game towards accelerating the planet's future into an even more tragic state.
And the lyrics are amazing and relate well to the feelings and story the game portrays
jammed so hard he had to take off his jacket
Yup , this one's a banger , every time you get to that area in the game i try to prolong the stage as long as possible just to listen to the full song.
Maybe hopping on the Christodolou train, another one that I'd like your take on is "They might as well be dead", I believe it was added during the DLC update for the Sundered Grooves biome.
Risk of Rain games are amazing, specially the second one. I totally didn't expect this to be covered here, but I'm very positively surprised!! I had forgotten how good this game's OST is haha. Knowing the meaning behind the name was the icing on the cake
Both good
I love your musical analysis videos where you stop every so often for deep and expansive pieces that constantly change
But I love it just as much when you just listen to the whole song and vibe literally 100 percent of the time while listening to the song because it's just that captivating
Thanks Jordan!!!!
It's awesome just seeing you jam out over this song! Fantastic piece here.
My favourite song in this game no question about it, it is such a soothing listen, I have spent countless hours listening to it and I feel I'll still never tire of it, just beautiful
You know, this track would normally make me feel relaxed and I never stopped to think about the sad tones to it, almost like the way the song is made makes my mind think of a soothing song rather than a sad one when the sadness is so apparent but I think the kinda experimental jazz start and the fact the sadder sounding part raises in volume rather than dipping does well to make you feel more hopeful than sad.
After listening to con lentitud pederosa from the 100k celebration stream I went back to RoR2 and started jamming more than playing the game haha~
The one hour+ long video of Chris talking about the soundtrack is inspiring, this guy is passionate and knows what he is doing, truly inspiring! Just like how Marco "lives" the music~ ♪
NB: This song makes me feel like I'm on a trip to the unknown, getting more and more difficult as the music ramps up.
Your wintry beard is looking magnificent my friend! Great video as always.
Watching you vibe to this song is so fun, you seem like the best kind of person to listen to music with
I love video game music so much
One of my favorite gaming tracks ever and I only started playing the ROR series about a month ago, this track hit me like a truck.
Its a pretty hard tie between Rain Formerly Known as Purple and Once In A Lullaby for me as my fav song. But man the whole soundtrack is S tier.
Its between con lentitud poderosa and once in a lullaby for me but yeah no the soundtrack is god tier
It definitely has a particular air to it; the stage is a sort of crossroads of a long journey and it has a sort of catharsis to it in a way…
There’s a similar track on the Haven OST by Danger that as a similar feel, and is very reminiscent… but I’m failing to recollect what it was. :(
You should gove Risk of Rain 1's Coalescence because that is their version of melancholic progression thats just amazing.
Chris may have improved on his composition, but Coalescence proves that he has always been a great composer not losing to time
I love to see Marco doing his lil dance.
The song is so hot this man had to remove his jacket.
The second Best song in the game series, absolutely love the melancholy tones to it. (and The best one is coalescence )
cloud with a 100% chance of purple rain and jamming stink-face
Risk of Rain songs always inspire me to stop playing and make music. It just inspires as you bop along
I just realized how much the lyrics fit the story of providence and mythrix
Hearing this and listening to prince's famous solo(think it was my guitar gently weeps) to see what the guy was about was a serious experience.
You definitely need to check out more risk of rain soundtracks, possibly one of the best video game osts out there
The mood for RoR 2 comes and goes but when it hits, it hits for days
Its interesting coming back to this after hearing the Deadbolt reaction and the evolution of his sound 😊
I have been waiting a really long time for this day to come. Oh boy I am excited to watch it.
Watching you vines brings a smile to my face. It's clear how much you just get the music
This song is now for 2 years in a row my most listened to song on spotify and it Will definitely be in my top 5 this year. Thank you Chris for making such amazing music.
Thank you good sir for covering this amazing work of art. I hope you have a wonderful day
Alternative title: Marco loses track of reality and jams unabashedly for 12min XD
I could listen to this song on repeat forever.❤
Surprised to see my favourite bop appear here out of the blue but I'm glad to have an excuse to listen to it again.
This is funny considering I die in game because im vibing the same way marc is doing to this song
Consider your choices from Sky Medow are either too start over on a new loop OR face a good like figure... very fitting.
Raw unfiltered jam, gotta love a passionate jam session
I was born after the times when disco was popular, but this music reminds me of this very atmosphere of disco clubs. Like a slow dance, which gradually turns into active movement and calms down towards the end. Therefore, I always want to dance to this track.
