Brenner does have a significant violent history. I don’t think he was a serial killer who targeted young men or anything. He has anger issues with violent tendencies. He was jealous of Dylan, angry at him because brenner squatting on his property. Dylan owning it could impact his ability to stay but also I don’t think brenner liked Dylan accessing the barn, etc. brenner wanted to be in control. If you noticed brenner mentions that Dylan was supposed to give him a days notice before accesses the barn. From what I remember way back it was supposed to rain so Dylan was moving his seed into the barn. BRenner mentions he was building a coop in there. Dylan had previous issues with brenner. It’s likely there was an argument and brenner shot Dylan out of anger. BRenner was a felon who wasn’t supposed to have guns and he hid a bunch of guns at a friends. BRenner is a bad guy, no doubt. Unlikely. That would mean additional charges for every murderer because they so often lie, cover up the crime, try to send police on a wild goose chase.
