This game holds a special place in my heart. As I’ve said before my mom was a paramedic and as a single parent she would have to work 48 hour shifts and find me a baby sitter. There was a elderly couple who’s kids had all moved out and had kids of their own by this point when I was 8 or 9 and were more than happy to baby sit me especially over night if need be. One day I’m there staying the night and I notice a box on the table. The old man owned his own pawnshop and inside the box were some things he was having trouble selling and at the very top of the pile was daddy Kong racing. I picked it up and told him how much I enjoyed DK64 and how even though GameCube was the new thing I still played my n64 and he asks me a couple questions about diddy Kong and I used my limited knowledge of him from dk64 to answer what I knew and he told me he could tell id take good care of it and he gave it to me to keep
My favorite N64 soundtrack. One of the hardest games to beat as a kid; I could never beat Wiz Pig. I came back to it in high school around 2006 and spent all summer trying to beat Wiz Pig and I finally did only to discover there was a SECOND Wiz Pig race. Came back to it again in 2017 and. beat the whole thing. Took me 20 years to finally beat the game; young me would be so proud of old me.
Bro I'm 30 now and I still have yet to play the second Wiz Pig race. I'm purchasing an N64 bundle and an ED64 Plus cartridge soon so I gotta get back to it and catch up lol
I have to agree - DKR trumps Mario Kart 64 by a country mile. To me, the gameplay, and the track, and the music, is more fun and entertaining than MK64. Multiplayer isn't as weak as N64 Glenn Plant makes it out to be, but that is just me, and my historic perspective of the game, especially when played against my family members, with both of the games.
As a kid I loved the egg-collection multiplayer mode. I don't remember much of it or why I loved it so much but it brings back great memories seeing it here.
I did prefer Diddy Kong Racing over Mario kart but still loved them both. One thing that I thought was needed in Diddy Kong Racing is that the karts needed a bit move grip, they always felt a little be to slippy and slidey to me. Now that Microsoft and Nintendo do cross play surely they can come to an agreement to remaster Diddy Kong Racing for Switch and Xbox one cross play. How good would that be. Here's hoping..
I agree. Most of the characters suffer from far too much understeer. However, this can easily be solved by using Pipsy or Tiptup. You probably just chose the wrong character. There's a magic cheat code which allows players to play as the same character too so everyone can play as the better handling characters in multiplayer.
I have so many fond memories playing this game at daycare with my friends after school. From racing each other, to taking turns with the single-player campaign against the bosses, to the free-for-all battle modes, just hearing the music takes me back to simpler days that I miss dearly. Icicle Pyramid was perhaps my all-time FAVORITE mode to play.
It also brings me back in time when i was 10 years old and my mom got this for me and my brother for Christmas, it was awesome!!! So much nostalgia with this game just me and my bro playing all Christmas morning. Then couldn’t wait to come back home to pkay during the day. Wonderful time in my childhood ill never forget
Christmas 97, wonderful time to play this I’ve got so many great memories of it. Great game that ramps the difficulty up with the silver coin challenge. Music is fantastic and some of my favourite tracks from any Nintendo 64 game.
to be honest it was one of the first games I ever reviewed on the channel, the one time when I was half asleep I deleted it by mistake so no better time to revisit it :)
I heard the main theme from this game on a GDQ and it was stuck in my head for three years before I bought this game and realized where it was from. Great soundtrack for sure
Until Mario Kart 8 came along, DKR was my favourite racing game of all time. I still dream of what Donkey Kong Racing would have been like on the GameCube.
Great video, loved this game as well, got it at Christmas, played it every day the following Summer, a great sense of achievement unlocking Drumstick & TT, and oh yeah Glenn your father is a legend for getting you that sick day from school 😂👍🏻.
I love this game so much. I bought a second copy because I couldn't find mine around the house and needed to hear the music again. It will always be my favourite kart racer, and I love me some Mario Kart too. Rare is a national treasure
I honestly had no idea they still existed, or that they were behind Sea of Thieves... strange, hahah. At least for the era of gaming I love, Rare did some amazing things and created many of my favourite games like Banjo-Kazooie, DKC and Snake Rattle and Roll.
So many memories with this game. Me and my siblings arguing over who gets to play as Pipsy, me accidentally unlocking the space area blew my mind, and that evil life preserver that will forever hold its secrets. Good times.
Recently restarted this game and am amazed at how well it still holds up. Any time I replay it I always collect the overworld balloons as soon as they become available and then go through each and every thing in order. I just wonder if I’ll still have patience for that TEETEE trial again as I’ve only ever unlocked him once.
It was the game my parents bought with the system. I could play a little bit but also had to take turns with my older brother. My parents weren't overly strict but limited our playing time per day. So the Day after they bought it i pretended to be ill so i wouldn't have to go to school. It worked. They were reluctant but believed that i was sick and so i waited patiently for my mom to go to work. She went to work. My father had a day off but went bathing. My time to sneak into the living room where the N64 was hooked up. Everything worked out and i could play Diddy Kong Racing. But guess what? My mom forgot something. She returned and caught me red-handed playing N64. It followed a rant by my mom but when she had to go my dad was actually pretty chill about the whole situation and let me playing again. I probably have some nicer memories of the game but this is the one that i had to immediately think of when you told how your father reported you ill.
Love this game! I did love unlocking Drumbstick and I do prefer this over Mario Kart 64. Both are great, but this one is just pure charm/adventure! Good video!
same here I really found this 1 Player Gaming mode very engaging and magical. Great graphics and music. And to explore new worlds was really satisfying.
This game always makes me smile and happy when playing. It is the perfect game for playing once your mates have gone home. Perhaps the N64 biggest game in licence limbo that hurts the most. I am so glad I got my Ultra HDMI, I am working my way through it again. I unlocked everything back in the day. The snow tracks and the music at xmas time make me festive and I am grinch.
Sadly, I've never played this game as a kid. Only Mario Kart 64 and some other great games. Recently I found this game for just 5 bucks and I must say it's amazing and I am glad to play it now.
I never managed to finish this game, but I had plenty of hours of Multiplayer fun with my friends. Our usual games where this, Mario Party and Snowboard Kids. We never really figured out any of the secrets like how to unlock Tick Tock or the Rooster. While I distinctly remember trying to drive over the Frogs in order to unlock him. We even guessed the Portals to the stages we never managed to unlock too. Those were fun times, my favorite Character was Tipsy and my Fave Vehicle the plane.
I never noticed an issue with the items, but maybe that's just because my friends and I were so close in skill level- as was the case with many of our games back then! DKR definitely relies more on pure skill, though- for better or worse.
I got this game for Christmas 1997 I believe. It was an amazing game. I loved it! The multiplayer with the egg snatching was so fun! The variety of vehicles and levels.....so good.
I love hearing you talk about N64 games. I also have a good memory of this game: a friend of mine had it, and he played for some months. One day, he invited me to his home so we could do homework together. After we ate, we started playing DKR in co-op mode and didn't stop until night. We didn't do the homework, but we defeated Wizpig that same day (at least, in the first race against him)
The first time I laid hands upon the N64 controller, family trip to the city (for we were country folk) and they took me to Toys R Us. I was 8 years old and I saw DKR and its speed and colors on the kiosk. Magical!!
Always loved this game more than Mario Kart 64! The open world adventure aspect was cool, and the addition of watercraft and plane races kept the racing fresh!
Mate, been waiting on this vid for a long time. Diddy Kong Racing is in my top 3 of all time! My best pal and I have held an annual sleepover on December 23rd since 1997 (the eve of Christmas Eve if you will) where we play games and watch Xmas episodes of key British sitcoms. From the 1998 occurrence onwards it’s been my task to play DKR through in one sitting whilst he does Goldeneye in secret agent. Just hearing the Frosty Village music in your vid is making me wish that the next three months would hurry up!
I don't know what it is, but both Diddy Kong Racing and Banjoo-Kazooie has some of the most nostalgic stages. Especially the snow/christmas stages, reminds me of all the feelings i had as a kid in december. If the N64 Classic ever comes out, this game needs to make it on the system!
Diddy Kong Racing all the way. And I still liked the races better in multiplayer because my brother and I were pretty evenly matched in the game. MK64 is no doubt the killer for battle mode, though.
While I did get the chance to play Mario Kart 64 at friends houses, my family and I never owned it. My little brother got DKR one year for Christmas and I was just blown away by it. Mario Kart 64 was fun, but the variety of crafts and the kick ass adventure mode sealed the deal making Diddy Kong my favorite racer on the N64. Great review as always, Glenn. Keep up the good work, buddy!
Ahw man one of Rare's masterpieces, I remember playing it at a friend's house and being instantly bewitched by this game. I loved Mario Kart.. But this had just so much more! When I finally got my hands on it myself I set out to completing everything - including getting TT - it was super difficult and at that point my biggest achievement in gaming haha.. So cool to hear you went through this as well! R+B cornering and z-boost required, and ofcourse tiptup. Secretly still listen to some of the tunes every now and then for a dose of nostalgia.. Thanks for the throwback!
I had both consoles but had a stronger connection to N64. I think because I had like 300 copies games on my PS1 I always treated the titles with more of a throwaway feel as opposed to the carts of N64 which being legit and expensive made me invest more to get my (and parents) monies worth out of them
Great video! I didn't play this game that much in the N64, but when I got it in the Nintendo DS I enjoy every second of it. Really it is an excellent game, very fun and challenging. Just love it.
I love this game so much and say love because I still have it! You hit all the points of just the sounds, characters, music, meshes into one and you feel like you’re there. As an adult now I still feel that with this game and Rare seemed to be amazing at doing that. But I will admit I CANNOT BEAT IT. like seriously I can only get like 40% into the game and just give up because it is SOO EFFING HARD. I come back to it over and over when roughly a year passes by to see if it is easier and the hell IT IS NOT. I’ve only ever physically seen and played the space theme races ONCE in my entire life and it wasn’t my copy. My favorite character has always bounced back and forth between timber and bumper.
My most played N64 title. I use it as my testing game for when I rgb mod N64 consoles. Because I've made alot of mods I've been able to FULLY complete the game and I mean FULLY. But because it's such a playable game I've so far fully gone through the game three times and I'm still not bored! A sign of a truly great game.
I played this game until the first Whizpig race, that was where I was screwed over so much I just gave up on the game after that. Kinda sucks that I never saw the ending of the game due to life being that hard for me and having busy life to juggle with gaming life. But there was moments of fun and enjoyment of Diddy Kong Racing that the 2002 sale of RARE to Microsoft still hurts us knowing that because of Banjo and the early version of Conker involved as characters in this game, this is another awesome RARE game that will perhaps never see release on the N64 Classic. Being alive during the N64 period is a mixture of joy of the memories of playing the best RARE games that were perhaps the best of their time aside from Nintendo's games as well, but the bitter reality of IP conflicts between Nintendo and Microsoft mean that unless if an agreement is sorted out between the two, there will be many younger gamers out there who will only ever experience the games on the Nintendo Classics and they will miss out on the awesome RARE games that we were so fortunate to have unless if they already know how to download the original ROMs themselves.
Hi Glenn, Long time fan! This game was one of the best! I remember playing it with all my friends with snacks and pop for hours... The best memories of my childhood. I have been waiting for you to review this gem. You never disappoint! Keep up your work. Sincerely, Kurby
Haha loved the story of your father calling you in sick tonplay this with you. It reminds me of when my brother had the chicken pox, and my mom let me stay home from school as well. We went to the shopping mall and bought star fox 64 as a surprise for my brother. What great memories.
Oh I can’t wait to get a n64! I’ve been watching your videos for the last month in anticipation for Christmas! Diddy Kong racing is one of the first n64 games I fully watched and after seeing it,I wanted to get the n64
I thought DCR was better than MK64 in all aspects except multiplayer. I still think they were onto some great concepts that still haven’t been fully utilized today. From boss battles, world discovery, and the different vehicle concept. A ton of fun!
I really want a remake of this game that features all the characters from the N64 and the DS versions, the bosses and maybe some members of the DK crew?
Great video. My favourite N64 game! I wish they would’ve made another instalment of this, don’t think we’ll ever see one though. I’ve spoken to David Wise on twitter before and praised him for this soundtrack, gives me so much nostalgia
My memory of this game, was when I was invited to my friends house when I was 11 years old for a sleep over. He had just gotten it, and back then we didn't know hardly anything about the games so it was new to us. We watch him play it for hours, but eventually I fell asleep after his many failed attempts to defeat the giant pig. I was hoping he'd play Zelda or atleast let us play. After that, I don't recall seeing it again.
Yeah, I have to agree. But I don't remember seeing after that particular sleepover. Many others were filled with Mario Kart, Mario Party 2, Pokemon Stadium, Road Rash, and the World Is Not Enough.
This is such an amazing game. I hadn't played it as a kid, it wasn't until several years ago that I picked up a copy at a Hard Off for about $5 and it immediately became one of my favorite N64 games. I dare say I even prefer it over Mario Kart 64.
Back in the day I sort of shrugged this one off in favor of Mario Kart 64. I'll have to fire it up again soon though because the single player does look pretty fun. Thanks for the review.
Hey I was stoked to find your channel in my recommended videos and i have been checking out a bunch of your backlog. Great stuff, I have so much nostalgia for N64. this was one of my favorite games. I loved the cheat codes. I still have a few memorized, jointventure for the two player adventure mode :).
This game was the first 64 i ever had and man is it as memorable as it is to me to you. A rare game if I ever saw one. Special shout out to the sound track!
When I was a kid, I enjoyed this game, but don't remember it as one of my absolute favorites. I guess I always preferred Mario Kart 64 due to its superior multiplayer. I seem to recall getting frustrated with the difficulty of the single player challenges in DKR, too. Your review is encouraging me to give DKR another shot and see how I like it 20 years later.
I searched this game on here because of an obscure reference that triggered whole chunks of my childhood. I played it mostly at the Dentist's office... they had a N64 in the room for kids and I played it every time I went- youngest of 3, I was there often. Now that i'm thinking of it i'm not sure I ever owned a copy, I just played it over and over at the Dentist because rando kids would reset the saves. Really fun, the bosses would scare me, & it was immersive. I loved the memory you shared with your dad! I gotta get a copy asap (: ..... I'm now realizing this is the case with Banjo Kazooie as well. I never owned it, I only played it elsewhere. Strange.
Interesting about the multiplayer as we always had more fun with it than Mario. Used to love a good battle on dark water beach and icicle pyramid. My greatest memory of the game actually. Adventure was definitely fun too.
Got this the christmas it came out, loved it butnever completed it. However i would chose mariokart over Diddykong....just the memories i have playing MK back in the day are some of the happiest times i can remember
Great review. I am a huge fan of this game. I guess it depends what you want out of a kart racer, but for me MK64 was a let down. It had very little of the chaos nor creative track design as the SNES Classic...But DKR absolutely did. I managed to unlock TT and Drumstick...I knew something was up when I saw that frog. I have fond memories of spotting that key in the first course. All of these things plus the fact that all courses felt magical and wonderful to race on and explore, and had multiple paths and secrets made it as much an adventure game as a racer. I admit the multiplayer wasn't as good perhaps as MK64, but I was personally more into it for the single player aspect. A wonderful game I still play to this day.
Such a classic, I had so much nostalgia watching this review! This game was a big part of my childhood. I remember getting in on Christmas, and playing it all day. It was great talking to friends in regards to unlocking T.T., and all the secrets. I liked it more single player wise over Mario Kart 64. It had more depth with the adventure modes, and I loved going through tracks in different vehicles. (Hovercraft+Volcano, good times.) Can't forget the cheatcodes, Jointventure. 2 player adventure mode. Such a great title, and game. I still plug it in and give it a whirl. Great review/retrospective as usual! Can't wait to see what you review next! *cough*Mystical Ninja, Goemon's Great Adventure *cough* Oh, Hovercraft, Plane, Kart, and T.T. is so worth the effort.
I will never forget the day I beat this game. I consider it one of my top 3 gaming accomplishments. Those later stage silver coin challenges were a BITCH, and then realizing I HAD to learn to play as the rooster to beat Wiz Pig was soul crushing. But I did it and god damn it was worth it. I love this game.
Oh man, do I love this game so much... I had to have spent hundreds of hours, accomplishing literally everything this game had for me. Time to bust out the n64! Thanks Glenn!
WHAT A GAME! is the phrase for this one.. I remember first seeing it in a friends house.. the vivid colours, fast paced action and different vehicles the island, the different themed worlds...the music! what else can i say!!!... one of THE most beloved games of my early teens. I still love this game to this very day. Games were much simpler bk then and you got all of them when you bought them and they had to be good (no patches)... Great simple pure fun seasoned with lots of exploration discovery and reward are my feelings for this. The exciting capabilities of Nintendo's next-gen system combined with 90's Rare game making genius....you can't go wrong! INSANELY HARD at times but a diamond for any collection.
DKR is hands down my favorite kart racer of all time. It was the only game my mom would play with me and to this day she can beat me at almost any race
This is one of the "big" N64 games I played very little of back in the day. Too busy playing Mario Kart and Beetle Adv Racing! I look forward to playing thru the unique one player mode.
N64 Glenn Plant I'll bump it up the priorities list :) I have a clean copy that I got a couple years ago; I just haven't played much of it. I'm playing thru a few racing games at the moment. Just 100%'d California Speed. Need one more circuit on Off Road Challenge. Most of the way thru Top Gear Rally; just unlocking the last of the crazy hidden cars (really, a beach ball!?)
Hovercraft, Kart then plane. Also when I played through originally I never knew it was impossible to beat second wizzy with anyone other than the two acceleration characters, as such as a kid I never beat it. However in high school I got an emulator for my tablet and was able to 100% this game and super mario 64. I have only 100% one other game ever so these were major accomplishments.
I loved this game. Never had mario kart 64 on my n64 but had this. Could never beat the final boss race, but I had so much fun just flying/driving around the hub world. Felt so open. Also i still prefer this to n64, the handling and graphics look much better in my opinion
Wish I could remember the first time I played this game (might have been at a hospital or something). It was this game alongside Starfox 64/Lylatwars that made me get an N64. As much as I love this game, I can't forget the frustrations I had with the bosses from my childhood - I have less of a problem with them now.
I am so much with you on you on Diddy Kong Racing love. That music change as you go to different zones 'sleighed' me. I thought it was so polished and such fun. Weird Indian elephant on a flying carpet ? I can roll with that. Gargling Octopus? Sure :) Flying Pig as a boss? It was a joy. Played it first on some odd 'for game development use and definitely not for piracy' device that sat under my N64 loading games from CD. I had no idea that if I did boot up another game after it then all my beloved balloons and progress would be wiped.. Man, that was a hard lesson to learn :( But just made me go and out and buy the cart the next week. Erm, it was Loderunner 64 that over-wrote my cherished save files... Hardly a triple A but I personally had lots of fun. Every tried?
This game holds a special place in my heart. As I’ve said before my mom was a paramedic and as a single parent she would have to work 48 hour shifts and find me a baby sitter. such a cool memory, this too is one of my all time fav games

I'm still pissed gamecube never got a sequel for this game.
Yeah man me too, rare own most of the character rights too!!!
The gamecube was in that very unfortunate window of time when Rareware was crumbling. We missed a lot of N64 sequels because of it
DAMN YOU MICROSOFT, DAMN YOU!
RIP Donkey Kong Racing
We'll just have to hope that there's emulation version
The Silver coin races where the bane of my existence as a child lol
Haha yeah some were very tough!
it was easy once i learned of the green boost trick
FINALLY!!! I love Diddy Kong Racing. It is (in my opinion) much better than Mario Kart 64
Glad I’m not the only one who thought so!
Agree
I have to agree - DKR trumps Mario Kart 64 by a country mile. To me, the gameplay, and the track, and the music, is more fun and entertaining than MK64. Yup. I was addicted to this one.. a long with Banjo
Yeah! You tell 'em!
As a kid I loved the egg-collection multiplayer mode. I don't remember much of it or why I loved it so much but it brings back great memories seeing it here.

or use the sharp handbrake and brake combo to really slam the turns
I remember being so impressed by the karts having lights that automatically turn on in tunnels 😲😄
And somewhere responsible... is a line of code with an if statement.

My favorite video game of all time! Thanks for finally reviewing it!

I swear this game hasn't aged at all. So fun, so innovative!

hard to find much wrong with this game hey
Dude, the feeling of getting 100% on this game was awesome. Love Rare!
One of my all time fav games
Future Fun Land. Enough said!
Like with Click Clock Wood and Cloud Cuckoo Land, Rare sure knew how to make their final levels in their N64 games.
I hated click clock wood and could kookooland is the perfect world to kill your fps
The Merc Hailfire Peaks lava side was even worse lol
But I disagree on Click Clock Wood. That level is my favorite in the series.
We need more donkey kong racing video games!! Do it, Nintendo!!
Surprising it did take you this long! Has such a great soundtrack! The original Mario Kart 7!
to be honest it was one of the first games I ever reviewed on the channel, the one time when I was half asleep I deleted it by mistake so no better time to revisit it :)
Better late than never I'd say. Great review!
I heard the main theme from this game on a GDQ and it was stuck in my head for three years before I bought this game and realized where it was from. Great soundtrack for sure
Thank David Wise for that lovely soundtrack despite it kinda sounding like a work of Grant Kirkhope.
Until Mario Kart 8 came along, DKR was my favourite racing game of all time. I still dream of what Donkey Kong Racing would have been like on the GameCube.
Nintendo screwed up hard by not buying Rare. They were magical together.
Great video, loved this game as well, got it at Christmas, played it every day the following Summer, a great sense of achievement unlocking Drumstick & TT, and oh yeah Glenn your father is a legend for getting you that sick day from school 😂👍🏻.
And before the comments begin....yes it was ONLY to play Diddy Kong racing 😂
I still have the copy I had back in 1998, I freaking love this game.
Which is the best racing game on the N64?
Mario Kart 64 or Diddy Kong racing?
The answer of course Is ... F-ZERO X
PICO approves of this comment
Nah. The answer is World Driver Championship.
*Beetle Adventure Racing
ftfy
Err Crusin World is the best!
Rush 2/2049?
I love this game so much. I bought a second copy because I couldn't find mine around the house and needed to hear the music again. It will always be my favourite kart racer, and I love me some Mario Kart too.
Rare is a national treasure
They were back then, now that statement would be up for debate
I honestly had no idea they still existed, or that they were behind Sea of Thieves... strange, hahah. At least for the era of gaming I love, Rare did some amazing things and created many of my favourite games like Banjo-Kazooie, DKC and Snake Rattle and Roll.
So many memories with this game. Me and my siblings arguing over who gets to play as Pipsy, me accidentally unlocking the space area blew my mind, and that evil life preserver that will forever hold its secrets. Good times.
Haha I always preferred Tiptup but my bro liked pipsy

This game always makes me smile and happy when playing. It is the perfect game for playing once your mates have gone home. Perhaps the N64 biggest game in licence limbo that hurts the most. I am so glad I got my Ultra HDMI, I am working my way through it again. I unlocked everything back in the day. The snow tracks and the music at xmas time make me festive and I am grinch.
man those snow tracks at Christmas you're right, you know its winter when those jingles come on
Sadly, I've never played this game as a kid. Only Mario Kart 64 and some other great games. Recently I found this game for just 5 bucks and I must say it's amazing and I am glad to play it now.
what a find and glad you enjoyed it
That isn't sad at all - I envy you being able to play the game as a new experience as an adult!
Still my favourite racer to this day.
Certainly up there for me also
Great point about the items.
I never noticed this because DKR was exclusively a battle MP game for my friends and I.
See I much preferred Mario kart 64 multiplayer. The rubber banding item deployment made the races much tighter
I never noticed an issue with the items, but maybe that's just because my friends and I were so close in skill level- as was the case with many of our games back then!
DKR definitely relies more on pure skill, though- for better or worse.
Best racer out there to this day. If only their were more like this one.
id have loved donkey kong racing to have been finished
@@n64glennplant such a shame it never came out. I actually only beat diddy kong racing for the first time just 4 months ago.
Oh man I’ve completed it so many times now but the first time was always the hardest
@@n64glennplant I watched your livestream of the game and it really helped me out. Thanks a million.
@Tucker Johnson yes snowboard kids is great too.
I got this game for Christmas 1997 I believe. It was an amazing game. I loved it! The multiplayer with the egg snatching was so fun! The variety of vehicles and levels.....so good.
See I always felt multiplayer was so so but solo it was amazing
@@n64glennplant they were both great, but the single player was the best
this game and star wars rogue squadron were the first games I ever played.
rogue squadron is awesome :)
I love hearing you talk about N64 games.
I also have a good memory of this game: a friend of mine had it, and he played for some months. One day, he invited me to his home so we could do homework together. After we ate, we started playing DKR in co-op mode and didn't stop until night. We didn't do the homework, but we defeated Wizpig that same day (at least, in the first race against him)
did you get get around to doing the second wizpig together>?
This was/still is the pinnacle of all kart racing games.
The first time I laid hands upon the N64 controller, family trip to the city (for we were country folk) and they took me to Toys R Us. I was 8 years old and I saw DKR and its speed and colors on the kiosk. Magical!!
oh man I bet that was like an overload for a country boy :)
I love how many people are mentioning the Christmas levels :)
Diddy Kong Racing all the way. And I still liked the races better in multiplayer because my brother and I were pretty evenly matched in the game. MK64 is no doubt the killer for battle mode, though.
Really great game and the soundtrack is still awesome to this day.
Tiptup ftw 👍
In contrast my experience with DKR lead me to the more "adult" playstation, cool hearing about your nostalgia for it, looking back it is a fun game.
I had both consoles but had a stronger connection to N64. I think because I had like 300 copies games on my PS1 I always treated the titles with more of a throwaway feel as opposed to the carts of N64 which being legit and expensive made me invest more to get my (and parents) monies worth out of them
Totally, I got sucked in by lure of Gran Turismo but should of kept both machines. Thanks for the nostalgia trip to the good ol 90's!
Great video! I didn't play this game that much in the N64, but when I got it in the Nintendo DS I enjoy every second of it. Really it is an excellent game, very fun and challenging. Just love it.
Oh man go back and play the N64 version it’s way better 😍
One of my favourite games of all time, you could absolutely rocket round the tracks and the story mode was excellent
I LOVED this game!! Had it for Christmas back in 97, took me a couple of years to unlock T.T as a driver
yeah took me weeks as a kid
Thank You Glenn Always ! My fav Game Of all time, you jus made my day !
Defo up there as one of mine 👍
Awesome game! Just finished playing it a couple hours ago!
An all time classic for sure!
I first played DKR properly in like 2014 and thought it was great, got addicted and ended up completing everything.
yeah its one of those games you could sink hours into
Always had a fond spot for this game. I too share the same nostalgic memories in Adventure mode hehe
It was just such a cool concept back then
I've never played this one, but I've always been curious about the different vechiles and of course Conkers lol.
Replaying this again after a few years - still brilliant and some very tricky courses! Really enjoying playing N64 again. Thanks for the top review.
Hi Glenn,
Long time fan! This game was one of the best! I remember playing it with all my friends with snacks and pop for hours... The best memories of my childhood. I have been waiting for you to review this gem. You never disappoint! Keep up your work.
Sincerely,
Kurby
thanks KURBY!
Never beat the last pig boss : ( even with the rooster. But I LOVED this game and its music!
Yeah the second wizpig race is tough - took me a few attempts on the livestream as you can see on the channel too
Haha loved the story of your father calling you in sick tonplay this with you.
Diddy Kong racing is one of the first n64 games I fully watched and after seeing it,I wanted to get the n64
thats amazing to hear, so many great games in line for you
I thought DCR was better than MK64 in all aspects except multiplayer. I still think they were onto some great concepts that still haven’t been fully utilized today. From boss battles, world discovery, and the different vehicle concept. A ton of fun!
I really want a remake of this game that features all the characters from the N64 and the DS versions, the bosses and maybe some members of the DK crew?
Thy would be cool but can’t see it happening anytime soon but we live in hope
Great video. My favourite N64 game! I wish they would’ve made another instalment of this, don’t think we’ll ever see one though. I’ve spoken to David Wise on twitter before and praised him for this soundtrack, gives me so much nostalgia
It had amazing graphics for its time too
agree 100%
My memory of this game, was when I was invited to my friends house when I was 11 years old for a sleep over. He had just gotten it, and back then we didn't know hardly anything about the games so it was new to us. We watch him play it for hours, but eventually I fell asleep after his many failed attempts to defeat the giant pig. I was hoping he'd play Zelda or atleast let us play. After that, I don't recall seeing it again.
Ah man this and Zelda were all anyone needed for a rocking sleepover ha
Yeah, I have to agree. But I don't remember seeing after that particular sleepover. Many others were filled with Mario Kart, Mario Party 2, Pokemon Stadium, Road Rash, and the World Is Not Enough.
I was such a fan of planes. And the music when you talk to the elephant... I never beat the pig second time around. Almost impossible game to beat
took me a few times on the livestream to do that second wizpig race but got there eventually too
This is such an amazing game. I hadn't played it as a kid, it wasn't until several years ago that I picked up a copy at a Hard Off for about $5 and it immediately became one of my favorite N64 games. I dare say I even prefer it over Mario Kart 64.
5 bucks is cheap for how awesome this game is
Back in the day I sort of shrugged this one off in favor of Mario Kart 64. I'll have to fire it up again soon though because the single player does look pretty fun. Thanks for the review.
Great game. Remember getting all the balloons, reverse and all. Loved the multi player, thought it was fun. Loved the egg one
Glad to see this Review Just finished the game Highly enjoyed it!
I have a full livestream playthrough series too 👍
Sorry so late, I was feeling nostalgic. I haven't looked into this game since 2001-02 maybe. Thank you.
Welcome and glad you’re enjoying the 10+ years of content that’s up on the channel now ✌️
I really like your commentary, but I do wish the images would match up more with the topic you are talking about.
Anyways, keep it up!
Your review is encouraging me to give DKR another shot and see how I like it 20 years later.
its one of my go to games anytime I feel like having a blast
Strange.
Christmas of 1997, i got my N64 and it came with Diddy Kong Racing.
Been on of my fav games of all time ever since.
best Christmas Ever
Interesting about the multiplayer as we always had more fun with it than Mario. Used to love a good battle on dark water beach and icicle pyramid. My greatest memory of the game actually. Adventure was definitely fun too.
Dark water beach is probably my fav offering
Got this the christmas it came out, loved it butnever completed it. However i would chose mariokart over Diddykong....just the memories i have playing MK back in the day are some of the happiest times i can remember
It’s amazing how many people come to this video around this time of year 😃 the nostalgia is strong with this one
@@n64glennplant have you done a review on Goeman?
Haha yeah I think the frog was such a cool way to unlock the character that it was often a word of mouth thing that spread around our school
I think like me, many watch and instantly remember playing it because of how memorable it is
I will never forget the day I beat this game. I consider it one of my top 3 gaming accomplishments. Those later stage silver coin challenges were a BITCH, and then realizing I HAD to learn to play as the rooster to beat Wiz Pig was soul crushing. But I did it and god damn it was worth it. I love this game.
You didn’t have to use drumstick to beat wizpig?
what memories.one of the best xmas ive had with this
Great vid! I miss those days :) Hope it makes it onto the N64 Mini Classic Edition.
Glenn is back! yeah!
not been away :) well okay I took some time off but did a few streams every now and again :)
Never could best ol' Wizpig back in the day. He now resides rent free in my head.
Amen to that edge! Send my regards to Christian!
Yes one of my favourite games of time I can't to watch this video thanks so much
also....FIRST!
DKR is hands down my favorite kart racer of all time. It was the only game my mom would play with me and to this day she can beat me at almost any race
This is one of the "big" N64 games I played very little of back in the day. Too busy playing Mario Kart and Beetle Adv Racing! I look forward to playing thru the unique one player mode.
oh man you need to get all over this, its one of those games in a way I wish I could forget so that I could enjoy it all over again with fresh eyes
Never forget your first 100 😬
My fave was the hovercraft, then the plane, then the kart.
As much as I love this game, I can't forget the frustrations I had with the bosses from my childhood - I have less of a problem with them now.
dat damn octopus right!?!?!?
Yep! Even had a bit of trouble with Wizpig too.
one of the more enjoyable games to 100% and my favorite kart racer to this day probably because I never had any friends as a kid in the 90s
Listen to this man ☝️
One of the games of my life. I could say many more things about this game, but that sums it all up.
one of mine too :)
