Maybe Mario VR will be the next big thing. Idk, one can only hope. The way we play games hasn't changed that much since the jump from 2D to 3D gaming. Game worlds have gotten larger, more interactive and more detailed since, but it's the same concept since the mid 90's.
I'm cinda new at retro games but wen I got a ds in 2017 my first console then I fell into reto gams so here is my list . Mario64 ds Pokemon fire red Lego star wars 2 Metriod prime one Legend of Zelda phantom hour glass That was hard. Onreable menchins new super Mario ds and cooking mama.
Seeing mario in 3D was HUGE, hearing the StarFox team talk to each other constantly, blew my mind! It was like playing a movie! Ocarina of time was the 1st game where I felt genuinely scared and alone in a massive world. Goldeneye's music had me obsessed. Seeing Sonic in 3d, talking with an amazing soundtrack, on the SEGA DreamCast system my next big WOW moment! Then I got older and leas impressed with things :(
Recently, my 60+ year old mum decided to start playing games as she thought it would keep her brain active. Between the controls, exploration and charming tone of Mario 64, I honestly couldn't think of a more perfect game for those purposes, and she's now addicted. I also suggested Mario Kart, but that was out of pure mischief ...
This is one of the reviews I've been looking the most forward to. Mario 64 is one of my favorite video games. I didn't get to play it until I was in high school and even then the Xbox 360 and such was out, but even with the modern games at that time Mario 64 managed to keep my attention far longer and I played the game like crazy. It made me feel like I did when I played Donkey Kong 64 years before and couldn't put the game down. I love this game and I consider it one of the N64's best.
I think we both received the N64 for the same Christmas (1997). My parents bought me Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64. Possibly my favourite Christmas as a kid.
I got this one at launch. It's hard to look back at it without nostalgia. I still play through it every few years. For me, it had the perfect atmosphere, that just radiates fun. If I had to sum my experience with the game down to three words, they would be "wah, hoo-hoo, Ya-HOO!"
It has to be one of the first times I was ever blown away by a game. Brothers friend has imported a 64 from Japan in the summer of 96 and being intrigued by the controls and environments. Flash forward a couple of months later and got one Christmas 96 with Mario 64. I really couldn’t describe to you how amazing it was. I remember one night playing for hours and it only felt like 2 hours! Exploring the whole castles and finding all its secrets took quite a bit of time but felt very rewarding. For something attempted for the first time it had such a tight design. Last time a game had that kind of fun and excitement for me was believe it or not Mario Odyssey. But the thing that was most amazing about playing this game in 96 was it showed that this was what games were gonna be like in 3D. I still remember how amazed everyone was with the graphics cause everything was smooth and not pixilated like Saturn and PlayStation.
The N64 was the first new console on the hood, fresh (here in Brazil), that my mom gave to me in the Christmas of 97...with S.Mario 64!!! Was blow away with the graphics and controller! Love in the first sight! Them in the next Christmas my mom give me GoldenEye 007... thats why this is one of my favorite consoles of all time! thanks mom!!!
Its mad to think that Mario 64's cartridge is a mere 4 megabytes in size, they should release a directors cut of the game on the Switch virtual console.
I left school in 94 and by the end of 95 had sold my megadrive and snes as I was then getting a car and going out at weekends and had grown out of 'kiddy' games systems! Then fast forward to 98 and I called round to my nanna's one day to find my cousin there with his new N64 hooked up and playing mario 64. It was unbelievable seeing and playing it for the first time and remembering how I used to love super mario world on the snes. 'What the hell's that' I said when I first saw the controller - but when you first played it it felt perfect! I had to get an N64 and super mario 64 and it is still one of my favorite systems today! My next purchases were - Mario kart 64, lylatwars, waverace and then I stumbled across a game that my cousin had forgot to take home one time and had left it at our Nannas - zelda orcarina of time - still quite possibly my favourite game of all time!
I had still be playing my NES while most my friends had already been playing SNES and would play that with them when I would be at their house. I was remember begging my parents for the N64 as a Christmas gift. I ended up getting a SNES that year which honestly was an amazing gift and one of my favorite consoles, but dreams of 3D mario adventures made me wish I could play it. I finally got one the year after and once I picked up the controller, my jaw hit the floor. I was so blown away at everything i was seeing. I played it every chance, exploring every level, and loving every moment. I have such treasured memories of playing this game. Truly a great game.
I was a big snes fan and owner for many years, the n64 was different in many ways but I still feel its not appreciated as much by the general retro community
Well...with all the fun I've had with the 64 over the yrs I still have to acknowledge that it was sadly a product of Nintendo's naivety and sheer arrogance (or stupidity to be quite frank), thinking that their hardware would be just as successful as the Nes/Snes w/o prime 3rd party support from Square, Capcom, Konami, Natsumi etc. Designing a machine with flawed hardware, against the earnest wishes of developers using carts alongside nonsensical ram connections causing processing bottlenecks (lower frame rates for ex in games). (check Ben Hecks teardown vid) The N64, as fun as the console absolutely is, set the stage for Sony to take their place, and dominate even further with the Ps2. The thing is, this was totally preventable, it's pretty inarguable that if Nintendo through the 64 didn't destroy 3rd party relations, then the GameCube would have fared much better than it did commercially, and history certainly would have played out differently in N's favor. Imagine FFVII, MGS, MMX4, Symphony otN etc, all on the 64 alongside M64, GE, Ocarina of Time etc? Then it could be more so considered a legit successor to the amazing Snes. This "failure"...for Nintendo to properly succeed or at least equate their proceeding machines software library and the forfeiture of their industry leadership to Sony that damaged them tremendously in console space for years is why the 64 is not *as* appreciated amongst the retro community imho based on my experience and research. (Regardless, still a very fun and influential console, F-ZX is my favorite game)
I know I'm susceptible to nostalgia. I get it every time I play N64. But. Nothing at all compares to how I feel when I see the inside of that castle. Enough to make me tear up.
I must have played a lot of obscure N64 games then, because whenever I watch his videos of Top Gear Rally, Jet Force Gemini, 1080 Snowboarding or a ton of other titles I get the feels.
I got my Nintendo 64 for Christmas 1997, with Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 as my first games. I played the latter first, but Super Mario 64 would be my inspiration for games, and later Ocarina of Time the following Christmas.
I remember we rented the console from Blockbuster and the game it was simply amazing and even to this day there's nothing that felt magical like that did. My brothers and I sat there in awe wondering how did they make this game perfect with the graphics, sound effects, music and perfect controls.
I had the privilege of getting a N64 before launch and my two first games were Super Mario 64 and Turok. Needless to say I spent months playing those two and they’re still some of my all time favorites.
In my country, Portugal, it was like 85 euros back then for Turok and around 60 for Super Mario 64. The console itself sold for 200 euros at launch. I got all of this plus a Controller Pak for 150 euros total but then again, it was a real privilege. I usually complaint about some pricing on games nowadays but back then it was way worse. :)
3 words = The System Seller! I will forever be nostalgic for this game. My best friend saved all of his pocket money (we were 15) to get the N64 at launch, and we played the hell out of Mario 64. Together we completed the game with all stars, and I will always fondly remember those days. Great video, your point about what would have happened to the N64 if this game did was not at the launch is a scary one. I believe that the N64 would have been DOA without Mario 64.
Mario64 was indeed my first N64 game... it was magical and I still play through it at least once a year. It was quickly followed up by Turok, Waverace and Goldenye. But Mario aside, Banjo & Kazooie is my alltime fave.
This one is on my list of all time favorite games. Nintendo's 1st true 3D platformer got everything right from the start that it set the standard for others in the genre. It's probably the 1st game where you actually experience freedom in gaming. I'm currently trying to beat every North American N64 game (296) and this one is the 1st one I beat. The order I'm going is doing all the 1996 games in chronological order of release date; giving the viewers the experience of what it was like getting the system at launch.
First N64 game play was a display at an old Target or Rich Way. It was OO7 and I was amazed by the movement and shooting the wall and bullet holes remaining. N64 was the last time that video games blew me away.
This is the greatest video game of all time. My opinion couldn’t possibly change. That giant jump in technology from playing 2d Sonic to roaming freely as Mario in a 3D world with no time limits or restrictions. The near silence of the castle grounds with a few birds whistling to that initial experience of the secret slide within the mysterious stained glass window. That magical feeling will remain with me forever.
My first N64 experience was playing Super Mario 64 at my local Blockbuster Video. Immediately sold me on getting an N64, that and Waverace64. Fantastic review of an N64 classic Glenn. Great work! 🤘
Mario 64 was the first video game I ever played back in the Christmas -97. I wasn't just controlling the character, I WAS MARIO. Still plugging my old N64 on the wall sometimes and go back adventuring to the world that introduced me to gaming. Such a good & warm memories of this game.
I was 12 when I this game came out. I received the "Change the System" promo VHS from Nintendo Power prior to the N64 release. I don't think I was ever so hyped up for anything in my life. Amazingly, Super Mario 64 not only lived up to my expectations, but exceeded them. Truly a classic game that I can still enjoy 20+ years later.
I wanted an N64 with Goldeneye for my birthday. In all honesty, I was really lucky that it was sold out at the time and SM64 was bundled with the system. Probably one of (if not) the best launch titles ever.
For me there has never been a game before or since that really made me feel like I was playing something truly new and never seen before. It gave me a feeling that this was something from the future that was shocking it was actually around at that time. Everything since has been interative and nothing has given that feeling and I'm not sure there will ever be such a leap in game design and technology ever again. Hope I'm wrong about that though.
I was hoping for the same feeling with VR but it doesn't really seem to be going anywhere in the same way that 3d TV's and gaming didn't really take off
My dad came home with one and a purple controller we got fighting force 64 and star fox 64 and cruising the world all my friends on my block had a 64 as well I remember going to stay the night at a friends house all I would pack is my 64 controller and a game no cloths or toothbrush just games and snacks
Still the best Hub world in 3D platform games. The castle feels eerie and mysterious with plenty of secrets and imaginative bits like the mirror room, the small/big island room with the crazy size shifting and best of all, the endless stairs. The best part of the game was this castle for me.
I got this game along with my N64 and Pokémon Stadium for my 10th birthday. I always grew up around video games and I remember going to bed after my birthday party and hearing my parents downstairs playing this game and just being in awe of the difference between it and SMB3, which they had absolutely mastered. I sucked at SM64 because I was so young at the time but I remember getting the DS port for my 13th birthday. I made it through the whole game until the final Bowser fight. I lost to him at least a dozen times. I literally dreamed about a strategy for beating him one night and I woke up the next morning, implemented that strategy, and finally beat the fucking game.
see Im one of the few that really liked the ds version of super Mario 64, I didn't like the other characters but as a whole it was an interesting game to play. wasn't the same level of greatness found in this version though
i really miss these days. n64 was easily my favourite era of gaming. i remember my first time playing this game. i slept over at a friends house because he just rented the game and we were both so eager to play it. i remember eating spaghetti his mom made and watching him discover the secret peach slide level where u enter through the window. and thinking that slide looks just like my dinner haha
🦬 I'm the best philosopher that's ever existed in the history of everything ever, ever. Check this out. Strangers walk down the street in the city, sometimes saying "hi" or "hello" to the other person in sight. One will boil pasta and when they drop the noodles into the water, for ONLY A MILLISECOND they will think of how they never will know the strangers they said "hi" to as they passed them by. Furthermore, they'd rather have the pasta noodles hurry TF up and get soft and chewy - than to have a lame cliché friendship with whoever those random fuqs were. Yeah, I know I'm the best, you ain't gotta tell me. Plus, you're in luck. I only charge 285 dollars for an autograph.
My 1st experience with N64 was renting it from blockbuster and Mario 64, seeing was believing. Music was so magical graphics were amazing and gameplay was awesome!!Mario 64>Mario Oddysee.
I've been playing games for 20 years but I have actually never touched this game... Hundreds of hours into Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Banjo Kazooie, But never Mario 64, utterly preposterous!
Richie Godsil lol play it you mad man and tell us how you got on with it. This was the first n64 game I got and I will never forget playing this in 3d for the first time. I got all 120 stars on this and loved every minute of it.
I never owned any Nintendo (or Sega, or Sony) consoles. I went from the Atari 2600 to the Commodore 64, to the Amiga, to Windows 98, so Mario wasn't as huge to me. I knew the character and I'd played Super Mario Brothers, which I didn't like, but I didn't have any special attachment to the games. I'd also never played any Playstation games at that point, so my experience with 3D games was limited to things like flight simulators or slow puzzle solving games like Driller. The idea that action games could have fully 3D maps that you could explore in real time was a completely new concept to me. The first time I saw Super Mario 64 was on a store demo unit. I only got to play with it for a few minutes and I don't even remember what area of the game it was, other than it was outside. I only saw a small area and I had trouble wrapping my head around the idea that not only was the entire map 3D, but the whole thing fit on a cartridge. In my mind, cartridge systems were pretty limited. The PS1 might be able to pull it off, but how could they fit all that into a cartridge? Of course as time went on, I got used to the idea of games being in 3D. I didn't actually PLAY Super Mario 64 until many years later, and that was on an emulator. Maybe some people will say that doesn't count, but I still don't own an N64 and don't know anyone (locally) who does. I don't have the money to buy an actual system and games for it, so emulation is my best option. I haven't played it that much, but I did like it. I like the exploration aspect of it. I haven't figured out some of the mechanics of it yet (like being told to use switches to activate colored blocks, but so far I haven't seen any switches for them), but I plan to play more of it. I got sidetracked by Conker's Bad Fur Day. :)
My favourite ever game, followed by Mario Kart 64 and Banjo Kazooie. I was utterly blown away by this game, it seemed magical. No game has ever done that since.
thanks Korncakes....saying that im happy with the size of the channel as this is a hobby and the more subs the higher the expectations. also it makes it much harder to respond to every comment the more viewers I get!
Mario 64 was my first n64 experience, completely loved the console from day one. Got the whole package for christmas and probably have never gotten a better gift to this very day.
Believe me. I got this game as well as Mario Kart 64 from my maternal grandmother when I was younger and I still play Mario games to this day. Thanks for sharing this super grand time with us, Glenn.
Great vid Glenn! I was in my first year out of school (first year uni) and had a proper job for the first time and wanted to get a console, and everyone I knew had Play Stations (including my brother), and a guy at the Burger King I worked at continually kept on at me that the N64 (that had just come out) was way better and that all I needed to play was Mario 64 and I would be sold. In New Zealand there is no official Nintendo presence (Nintendo Australia administers us) so there was no marketing effort, no advertising or anything. After a couple of weeks of my workmate going on about it and not knowing anything about it I went into an electronics shop to see if I could spot one, and they had it on a big screen at the front of the shop with a looped attract demo of Hoth on Shadows of the Empire. I watched the demo for about 15 minutes and being a SW fan-boy from way back was utterly speechless, and on the spot bought Mario 64, SoTE and the console. My girlfriend at the time starting playing it, so we kept it at her house quite a bit, and she ended up beating Mario before me, and I ended up having to ask her help on how to get the wing cap :D
Hi Glenn, I have been a subscriber for 2 years now... Your content gets better and better. I am so happy that you are continuing your work. You are my number one stop for N64 reviews and collector information. Please continue your fantastic work. Thanks, Kurby P.S My first N64 experience was watching my neighbors playing blast corps... It begin a life long love of video games :).
Oh man...where to start..this was my first game on the system i was obsessed with it even be4 getting it tho thx to a friend that happened to have it months before i get it and all the magazines talking about it. It felt magical a whole world i could warp myself into and forget about everything else this game was unlike anything i had witnessed 'till then, the music, sounds, colours, variety and diversity of lvl themes, size and depth of lvls, feeling of exploration and adventure it offered was UNMATCHED i feel thankful for having this as part of my childhood-early teens and the nostalgia it creates never rly seems to go away even today as im watching this video i can feel the emotions i had when playing this as a kid. Its true that the psx won the battle of this generation of consoles but Nintendo games were all about quality and this is obvious as N64 is the numero uno nostalgia console in this generation of systems. SM64 simply dwarfed every other platform at the time and made it look like a caricature SM64=BEST/UNFORGETTABLE.- ps: Banjo-kazooie is with it up there but it feels like its poor relative you all know what i mean still xcellent games both of em.
I have abit of an odd memory of first playing super Mario 64. After school I made plans and I stayed over the night at a friend's house and his mom made us spaghetti for dinner while I played his copy of this game. It was almost surreal. I was watching him play the first secret slide. The one where you jump in through with the stained glass princess peach windows. I couldn't help but compare my spaghetti dinner his mother made to the color of the secret slide lol. Just a strange memory of my first exspirence of this game.
So many good memories as a kid. The music, sound effects, gameplay, and controls were fantastic. Hearing “It’sa me, Mario!” never gets old, even today. Over 20 years later Mario 64 is still being cherished and modded by a strong hacking community that have such gems like Super Luigi 64, Mario 64 Chaos Edition, and Mario 64 Multiplayer. This will always have a special place in my heart and memory.
My first N64 experience was renting the system from Blockbuster, and Super Mario 64 was the game we rented with it. I specifically remember collecting 36 stars with my time with the game before we had to return it. Bob-omb battlefield was the ultimate playground for me, I spent a lot of time just flying around with the wing cap in that level.
Anyway, my first experience with the N64 was at a video rental shop. I was in Pittsburgh, PA visiting my cousins and we went to the rental shop to get a few SNES games as we usually did. They had a Japanese N64 there with SMB64 all in Japanese hooked up and available to play. you had to put coins in it and could only play for a minute, but it just blew my mind. I didnt read any gaming magazines at the time, so I hadnt seen any screen shots and i didnt know what to expect with the graphics. when I saw them my jaw dropped.
I got my 64 with waverace.......had it about 2 weeks before trading it in for goldeneye, although the best present i got was turok 2 which from what i remember had a black cartridge, happy days
This game holds a special place in my heart. My childhood friend passed away last year, and this game was HIS game on the N64. I would go over to his house every morning before we would hop on our bikes and head off to school, and he would show me how far he had progressed the night before. I was always shocked because he seemed to be so good at the game. I either didn't have the game, or couldn't seem to make any progress on it, but he ended up beating it! It was some random morning and I came inside and he had a huge grin on his face, he had beaten Mario 64. Miss ya bud.
Hey you mentioned how as a child you traded a game to get Super Mario 64(for a little while at least). I had a similar experience, when my brother traded our copy of Tarzan for the n64 for Super Mario 64. (One of his best trades if I might add.)
This game....I can recall being at a store and seeing this on display while some kid played. It was such an amazing game for it's time and is still fun to this day to play. The DS remake was fun too.
I remember getting the N64 and Super Mario 64 a day or 2 before it officially launched, having pre-ordered it in Smyths months earlier, my father went in and told them he lived an hour away and wouldn't be able to call in again for weeks so we got it. 3 word review : all time great. I'd love to know how many hours I spent (never wasted) on this classic.
You see a thumb nail for super mario 64 review and you'd normally overlook it because it's been done many times.....then you see Glenn Plant and you gotta check it out. No brown nosing intended. :)
Mario 64 is the most replayable game of all time. I only first played the game in 2015, but have now 100% completed it around 20 consecutive times (and the DS version about 6 times). It's one of those rare games that gets better each time you play it. My first playthrough was pretty frustrating and left me underwhelmed, but it has since become my second favourite game of all time (after Ocarina of Time). There are just so many ways to approach the game, thanks to Mario's versatile moveset and the non-linearity of each star. It's also incredibly fun to speedrun the game. If you look past the dodgy camera, dated visuals and occasionally finicky controls, you will find one of the most enjoyable games in gaming history. Thank God Nintendo is finally bringing back the old formula with Mario Odyssey...
Seriously best game ever. I remember being 13 and getting an N64 for my birthday, it came with goldeneye and my sister got me super mario 64 and brother got me fighters destiny. Ever since then nintendo had me hooked. The only Company to survive the test of time and still give us quality games
Christmas 1999: I got an N64, with Goldeneye and Star Wars Racer. Was super happy with it! Then during 2000, I got Super Mario 64, Lylat Wars, Mission Impossible.
Starfox 64, Super mario 64, Rush and Turok Dinosaur hunter. my oldest brother got them all when the console launched. I later, after I managed to get the console from my brother, by pure luck, found a copy of Goldeneye 007 for the N64 at a local game stop. I never thought I would ever find a copy of it with how much of a cult classic it was, so I bought it right then and there not willing to risk that someone else who knew the value of the game would come by and buy it. I mostly play these games on Emulator now, as I don't want to risk damaging the console and the priceless original cartridges.
Super Mario 64 was the first game me or my brother ever played I don't think any other game will hold a more special place in my heart and the fact that it's still fantastic to this day definitely helps.
No matter how far consoles have come along with amazing graphics etc nothing will compare to the jump from the Snes to the N64 in terms of not just looks, but also the feel of it,.
I played this at a kiosk at the mall before it came out. Needless to say it left an impression on me that has stuck with me this entire time. Before i played Mario I was looking at both the Saturn and the Playstation but it was Mario 64 changed my mind and I went with the N64 for Christmas.
My first N64 game was Ocarina of Time. I traded a friend a pokemon card for it after school (Blastoise). I'd never been into Zelda and actually went in blind on OOT. I can safely say that moment changed my life in gaming forever, and I'm extremely greatful for that whole experience.
This is the game that started it all for me, ill never forget my aunt buying the n64 and mario 64 . She would play it alot while id sit there jus in awe hoping to get a play haha . Still an Amazing game to this day and probably my fave on the system next Diddy Kong Racing . I do wish Luigi was a Playable character in this .
Three word review: Most dynamic platformer. It's still true today. The amount of moves that Mr. Koizumi made for this game really sell it. On that level it's unrivaled. I love other platformers, including all the other Mario games, but in terms of expression nothing has come close. I have an awful memory so I probably played N64 beforehand, but I think I got mine Christmas 1999 or 2000 with Mario 64 included. An old CRT, sitting in wrapping paper having a view around the courtyard. Everybody, I mean EVERYBODY loves that courtyard and does the same things there. It's such an important addition to the game to have that quiet time. I still never beat Mario 64 by myself, but I spent a good enough time in it.
always put this one off as its one of those games which is hard to express in my opinion - plus loads of other people have done a much better job of it :)
My older cousins had this and a Nintendo 64 with golden eye As a 7 year old seeing Mario in 3d back flipping sliding climbing was something that i will never forgot like a whole new world. Needless to say I didn't want to leave and begged and begged for a year until next Christmas there it was console Mario kart Mario 64 wave race and a steering wheel
Nothing will EVER top the feeling of seeing Mario in 3D for the first time. Nothing.
The only thing that comes close is the feeling of absolute immersive freedom that came with GTA 3 in 2001. But Mario 64 edges it out.
you know, thats a damn good memory
lmao
Curry Chips Uh, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie did not too long ever.
Maybe Mario VR will be the next big thing. Idk, one can only hope. The way we play games hasn't changed that much since the jump from 2D to 3D gaming. Game worlds have gotten larger, more interactive and more detailed since, but it's the same concept since the mid 90's.
One of the best games ever made. Easily in my top 5 of all time.

Mario64 ds
Pokemon fire red
Lego star wars 2
Metriod prime one
Legend of Zelda phantom hour glass
That was hard.
Then I got older and leas impressed with things :(
see I got a DC on launch and visually I liked it but the gameplay of sonic adventure was very underwhelming

Thanks man, loved the review too :)

I love this game and I consider it one of the N64's best.
you know its funny, I find that games from this era hold my attention a lot more than many modern titles are able to
@@n64glennplant the cartridge fast load is so Kool for my short attention span. Disks make me Jones.
I think we both received the N64 for the same Christmas (1997). My parents bought me Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64.
Possibly my favourite Christmas as a kid.
you know I think it was probably mine too - what a great year and time of my life that era was
Things will never be like that again :-(
I got this one at launch. It's hard to look back at it without nostalgia. I still play through it every few years. For me, it had the perfect atmosphere, that just radiates fun. If I had to sum my experience with the game down to three words, they would be "wah, hoo-hoo, Ya-HOO!"
and those are some fine words to use to describe this!
I think donkey kong on snes was the first game that blew my mind, graphically and the animation level was unreal
The N64 was the first new console on the hood, fresh (here in Brazil), that my mom gave to me in the Christmas of 97...with S.Mario 64!!! Was blow away with the graphics and controller! Love in the first sight! Them in the next Christmas my mom give me GoldenEye 007... thats why this is one of my favorite consoles of all time! thanks mom!!!
theres so many n64 fans in Brazil, I love it! Ronaldinho soccer :)
Its mad to think that Mario 64's cartridge is a mere 4 megabytes in size, they should release a directors cut of the game on the Switch virtual console.
that would be amazing, put back in all the stuff miyamoto couldn't fit in. saying that...weve been asking for ura Zelda for years too
Actually, it was 8 MB. :)
A very nostalgic game.
for me too
I left school in 94 and by the end of 95 had sold my megadrive and snes as I was then getting a car and going out at weekends and had grown out of 'kiddy' games systems!
N64 Glenn Plant I see what you’re saying about n64, and now that you say that I honestly agree with you
Well...with all the fun I've had with the 64 over the yrs I still have to acknowledge that it was sadly a product of Nintendo's naivety and sheer arrogance (or stupidity to be quite frank), thinking that their hardware would be just as successful as the Nes/Snes w/o prime 3rd party support from Square, Capcom, Konami, Natsumi etc.
Designing a machine with flawed hardware, against the earnest wishes of developers using carts alongside nonsensical ram connections causing processing bottlenecks (lower frame rates for ex in games). (check Ben Hecks teardown vid)
The N64, as fun as the console absolutely is, set the stage for Sony to take their place, and dominate even further with the Ps2.
The N64 will never be outdone. Just Masterful!!
n sixty 4 life :)
I know I'm susceptible to nostalgia. I get it every time I play N64. But. Nothing at all compares to how I feel when I see the inside of that castle. Enough to make me tear up.
"glenn only reviews obscure n64 games!"
glenn: "hold my beer."
I must have played a lot of obscure N64 games then, because whenever I watch his videos of Top Gear Rally, Jet Force Gemini, 1080 Snowboarding or a ton of other titles I get the feels.
He keeps the best for last
ha well I get more of a kick out of doing the obscure but I do like to drop a well known title every now and again
I got my Nintendo 64 for Christmas 1997, with Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 as my first games. I played the latter first, but Super Mario 64 would be my inspiration for games, and later Ocarina of Time the following Christmas.
OOT is my all time fav game, for reasons which ill eventually get around to explaining on a video :)
My favorite N64 and Mario game! I play it (and finish it with all the stars) at least one time each year :p
Nicolas Cortés that's quite a lot, a haven't played it for 20 years! How long does it take you each time?
around a week, i take my time to enjoy it:p
im more like once every few years if I can get a good amount of time to nail it in a short space of time
I remember we rented the console from Blockbuster and the game it was simply amazing and even to this day there's nothing that felt magical like that did. My brothers and I sat there in awe wondering how did they make this game perfect with the graphics, sound effects, music and perfect controls.
it really was a perfect blend!
My first N64 experience was Mario 64 soon followed by Goldeneye and I actually did get both of those games with my Christmas N64.
they were great first games to get and the ones everyone really wanted
Got this and the N64 on my birthday. One of my greatest childhood memories. Mind blowing. You felt as if you were playing the future
I had the privilege of getting a N64 before launch and my two first games were Super Mario 64 and Turok. Needless to say I spent months playing those two and they’re still some of my all time favorites.
man I remember how expensive Turok was on launch !
Johnny Rio a shame what Microsoft did to BK...YL is good and all but it’s certainly not for everyone.
thats certainly up there with my alternatives too
This one is on my list of all time favorite games. Nintendo's 1st true 3D platformer got everything right from the start that it set the standard for others in the genre. It's probably the 1st game where you actually experience freedom in gaming.
I'm currently trying to beat every North American N64 game (296) and this one is the 1st one I beat. The order I'm going is doing all the 1996 games in chronological order of release date; giving the viewers the experience of what it was like getting the system at launch.
one of my favourite classic games from the classic 64
watching these video's brings back some good memories , subbed
Welcome brah! 👍
Mario 64 is my all-time favorite game, and it looks so nice in HD!
thanks Samuel!
First N64 game play was a display at an old Target or Rich Way. It was OO7 and I was amazed by the movement and shooting the wall and bullet holes remaining. N64 was the last time that video games blew me away.
im trying to think of the last time a game blew me away...you know I can't think of many!
I still wonder what Super Mario 64 2 would have been like, had it been released in 1999 as planned.
anyone else having extreme nostalgia for the 90s lately?
This is the greatest video game of all time. My opinion couldn’t possibly change. That giant jump in technology from playing 2d Sonic to roaming freely as Mario in a 3D world with no time limits or restrictions. The near silence of the castle grounds with a few birds whistling to that initial experience of the secret slide within the mysterious stained glass window. That magical feeling will remain with me forever.
Ok baby
My first N64 experience was playing Super Mario 64 at my local Blockbuster Video. Immediately sold me on getting an N64, that and Waverace64. Fantastic review of an N64 classic Glenn. Great work! 🤘
moviemetalhead Same combo here! :-) Mario 64 + Wave Race. Fantastic period of my gamer life
gazzola41 hell yeah man, those wave effects still amaze to this day.
thanks metalhead!
Mario 64 was the first video game I ever played back in the Christmas -97. I wasn't just controlling the character, I WAS MARIO. Still plugging my old N64 on the wall sometimes and go back adventuring to the world that introduced me to gaming.
Such a good & warm memories of this game.
its one of those games you can return to at any time and instantly be taken back to the day!
I remember playing this for the first time and had no idea how the controller worked, it was also my first time playing with an n64
you know....ive never actually thought of it that way but I remember having trouble with the slides in Mario 64 for that reason
a magical masterpiece
indeed it is Al
I wanted an N64 with Goldeneye for my birthday.
In all honesty, I was really lucky that it was sold out at the time and SM64 was bundled with the system.
Probably one of (if not) the best launch titles ever.
I can't think of a better ever launch title on a console - really showcased what the n64 was about
For me there has never been a game before or since that really made me feel like I was playing something truly new and never seen before. It gave me a feeling that this was something from the future that was shocking it was actually around at that time. Everything since has been interative and nothing has given that feeling and I'm not sure there will ever be such a leap in game design and technology ever again. Hope I'm wrong about that though.
go play Quake 1 (1996) thats even more impressive
I was hoping for the same feeling with VR but it doesn't really seem to be going anywhere in the same way that 3d TV's and gaming didn't really take off
Christopher Stone
Sry, but the Quake 1 experience doesn´t hold a candle against the Super Mario 64 experience.
Felix S. Of course it doesn't hold a candle its a completely different genre its like comparing apples and oranges
My dad came home with one and a purple controller we got fighting force 64 and star fox 64 and cruising the world all my friends on my block had a 64 as well I remember going to stay the night at a friends house all I would pack is my 64 controller and a game no cloths or toothbrush just games and snacks
those were the days man!
This was a great nostalgic run into the N64 and Mario the launch title.
It is nice to hear the experience from someone else.
thats why I love doing this channel, everyone will have their own opinions and so I just like throwing mine into the mix
Still the best Hub world in 3D platform games. The castle feels eerie and mysterious with plenty of secrets and imaginative bits like the mirror room, the small/big island room with the crazy size shifting and best of all, the endless stairs. The best part of the game was this castle for me.
I think I prefer gruntys lair as a hub world but this one is certainly cool
The review of all reviews!
thanks Adam!
Knees weak, arms are heavy.
haha thats an strange but funny memory to have
Amazing nostalgic review. Thanks lots
My first 64 games were Mario 64 and Killer Instinct Gold
2 good games!
Super Mario 64 is the definition of a perfect game.
Super Mario 64 is a timeless masterpiece.
🦬
I'm the best philosopher that's ever existed in the history of everything ever, ever.
Best mario game ever,
This was revolutionary when it came out.
I remember getting it for my birthday and being blown away
I've been playing games for 20 years but I have actually never touched this game...
Hundreds of hours into Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Banjo Kazooie, But never Mario 64, utterly preposterous!
Richie Godsil howwww???? Do a favor and play it ASAP
be gone vile beast! what witchcraft does thee speak of!?!? jokes aside you really need to finally get around to playing this
N64 Glenn Plant I think I have the cartridge in my game room too, to compound the ridiculousness...
Please give us an update!
Wow. 2 reviews in a week.
He's back
and one lined up for tomorrow and possibly this weekend too
I never get tired of your reviews and stream.. idk.. something about your voice and knowledge of this system.
thanks Marc, my knowledge is ok - I make some mistakes but im only human!
3 word review:
A. Timeless. Classic.
My favourite ever game, followed by Mario Kart 64 and Banjo Kazooie. I was utterly blown away by this game, it seemed magical. No game has ever done that since.
they are 3 of the best games on the console for sure
N64 Glenn Plant agreed. I also had a snes and cube but the 64 will always be my fav
My #1 game of all time
wow thats some high praise right there
Strange how you’ve never done this until now
tell me about it
This channel deserves so many more views than it gets.
thanks Korncakes....saying that im happy with the size of the channel as this is a hobby and the more subs the higher the expectations. also it makes it much harder to respond to every comment the more viewers I get!
Mario 64 was my first n64 experience, completely loved the console from day one. Got the whole package for christmas and probably have never gotten a better gift to this very day.
we have a very similar experience
Still one of my favorite games of all time and my favorite Mario game.
Hi Glenn,
I have been a subscriber for 2 years now... Your content gets better and better. I am so happy that you are continuing your work. You are my number one stop for N64 reviews and collector information. Please continue your fantastic work.
Thanks,
Kurby
P.S
My first N64 experience was watching my neighbors playing blast corps... It begin a life long love of video games :).
blast corps was awesome, always used to see it on games world tv show
Oh man...where to start..this was my first game on the system i was obsessed with it even be4 getting it tho thx to a friend that happened to have it months before i get it and all the magazines talking about it. SM64 simply dwarfed every other platform at the time and made it look like a caricature SM64=BEST/UNFORGETTABLE.-
ps: Banjo-kazooie is with it up there but it feels like its poor relative you all know what i mean still xcellent games both of em.
Haha so random! 🍝
Always loved the dire dire docks music. Also, how is Mario 64 with the Hori controller?
I prefer to play with the standard classic controller, hori works well but I tend to prefer it for racers than platform games
This will always have a special place in my heart and memory.
same with me too fella!
My first N64 experience was renting the system from Blockbuster, and Super Mario 64 was the game we rented with it. I specifically remember collecting 36 stars with my time with the game before we had to return it. Bob-omb battlefield was the ultimate playground for me, I spent a lot of time just flying around with the wing cap in that level.
oh man I remember renting the ps1 from blockbuster when it first came out - £99 plus a £200 deposit for 2 nights!
I literally CRIED days, DREAMT months!! for this game. It was mind blowing. It was a before and after.
My first N64 game was most definitely Super Mario 64, Wave Race 64 and Pilot Wing 64, my big brother bought all 3 when he bought the console.
your bro must have been bare rich bro!
Oh boy, he's finally done it!
finally!
Like if you were alive and old enough in the 90's to truly understand the hype behind this game✌🎮🕹
the hype was real for those of us who were big fans of nintendo!
fuckjoya there are plenty of us who are 25+years old and remember it.
I didn't see many import Japanese stuff where I lived at the time, but when I lived in London the genesis stuff was all over the place
I got my 64 with waverace.......had it about 2 weeks before trading it in for goldeneye, although the best present i got was turok 2 which from what i remember had a black cartridge, happy days
it was black and I too got Turok 2 as a gift from my sister!
It’s finally here!!
ive come just for you Michael :)
Glad this game's getting some exposure.
theres some much better reviews on YT for it, this was just my 2 cents :)
HappyConsoleGamer's video with RobMan was a good one.
i was playing just right before you uploaded the video lol
read your mind Fabio!
Hey you mentioned how as a child you traded a game to get Super Mario 64(for a little while at least).
I had a similar experience, when my brother traded our copy of Tarzan for the n64 for Super Mario 64. (One of his best trades if I might add.)
yo thats a super Amazing trade you at least haha
my first two n64 games (owned) were mario kart 64 and cruis'n usa. but first n64 game i played was mario 64
Mario kart is another classic, awesome game
Cruisn USA is so bad it's good.
This game....I can recall being at a store and seeing this on display while some kid played. It was such an amazing game for it's time and is still fun to this day to play. The DS remake was fun too.
see I want a fan of the remake on DS
I remember getting the N64 and Super Mario 64 a day or 2 before it officially launched, having pre-ordered it in Smyths months earlier, my father went in and told them he lived an hour away and wouldn't be able to call in again for weeks so we got it. 3 word review : all time great. I'd love to know how many hours I spent (never wasted) on this classic.
oh man thats an awesome memory!
The most pivotal game for the console... the killer app at launch. Amazing how this game still is stuck in my memory. Nintendo nailed it
im glad you agree!
I’m impressed you held off reviewing this title for this long! You’ve been on YT for a long time. I do think it’s a masterpiece btw
many years now - im getting old hah
You see a thumb nail for super mario 64 review and you'd normally overlook it because it's been done many times.....then you see Glenn Plant and you gotta check it out. No brown nosing intended. :)
haha thanks Francis :)
I still need to get and play odyssey...and a switch in fact
Same... :(
Seriously best game ever.
I don't even playing at first, just watching my older neighbor play it, it was epic in the 70 star mark I play it for the very first time
Super Mario 64 was the first game me or my brother ever played I don't think any other game will hold a more special place in my heart and the fact that it's still fantastic to this day definitely helps.
No matter how far consoles have come along with amazing graphics etc nothing will compare to the jump from the Snes to the N64 in terms of not just looks, but also the feel of it,.
I know right I think that’s a point that so many people forget
I played this at a kiosk at the mall before it came out. Needless to say it left an impression on me that has stuck with me this entire time. Before i played Mario I was looking at both the Saturn and the Playstation but it was Mario 64 changed my mind and I went with the N64 for Christmas.
I got the Saturn the year it came out and to this day felt disappointed with the games on it.
I do wish Luigi was a Playable character in this .
that would have been cool I agree
Wait, have you really not reviewed this yet? I don't believe it!
always put this one off as its one of those games which is hard to express in my opinion - plus loads of other people have done a much better job of it :)
My older cousins had this and a Nintendo 64 with golden eye
As a 7 year old seeing Mario in 3d back flipping sliding climbing was something that i will never forgot like a whole new world.
Needless to say I didn't want to leave and begged and begged for a year until next Christmas there it was console Mario kart Mario 64 wave race and a steering wheel
