Questa registrazione riguarda il concerto che Blind Jim Brewer fece il 12-3-1983 a Vimercate (Milano) organizzato da Radio Montevecchia, 5 anni prima di morire.

Jim Brewer, bluesman cieco di Brookhaven, Mississippi, e’stato accolto come un vecchio amico da un pubblico numerosissimo e disponibilissimo,
L'immagine che ha dato è quella di un musicista molto strettamente ancorato
alle radici del blues rurale, di cui però raccoglie prevalentemente l'eredità degli intrattenitori e dei suonatori da “street corner”, che hanno la necessità di creare una comunicativa estremamente immediata con il pubblico di passaggio. Così l'atmosfera che prevale non è quella delle drammatiche dissonanze o degli ossessivi accenti ritmici tipici di altri musicisti del Delta. ma è più distesa. e si ammira fin dall'inizio una spiccata vena melodica. Anche quando Brewer rivisita classici molto «duri», come «Big Road Blues)), gli angoli risultano smussati, e gli arrangiamenti conformi alla diversa atmosfera creata.
Dal punto di vista strumentale Brewer suona un two-finger-picking, con frequenti figure sui bassi vicine, a volte, ai moduli della musica "Old Time» bianca; tuttavia, forse per il fatto di aver imparato a suonare senza vedere, ha un modo molto particolare di ottenere accordi percuotendo le corde acute dal basso verso l'alto, con l'indice della destra. Sorprendono anche le posizioni inusuali della mano sinistra, dovute alla deformazione che Brewer ha subito al mignolo.
In generale, pur non possedendo uno stile personalissimo, Blin Jim tende a “macinare”i pezzi che propone, uniformando brani anche diversissimi fra loro (come «Gonna Move To Kansas City» di Jim Jackson, “Come Back Baby”, “How Long”, “Bright Lights, Big City”) alla sua collaudata prassi esecutiva, basata su schemi di una semplicità essenziale e di immediata fruibilità. La musica che ne è risultata ha trovato anche per queste ragioni un'accoglienza favorevolissima.

Jim Brewer, blind bluesman from Brookhaven, Mississippi, was welcomed like an old friend by a very large and very available audience,
The image he gave is that of a musician very closely anchored
to the roots of rural blues, of which however he mainly collects the legacy of entertainers and “street corner” players, who have the need to create an extremely immediate communication with the passing audience. Thus the prevailing atmosphere is not that of dramatic dissonances or obsessive rhythmic accents typical of other musicians from the Delta. but it is more relaxed. and you can admire a strong melodic vein from the beginning. Even when Brewer revisits very «hard» classics, such as «Big Road Blues)), the edges are smoothed out, and the arrangements conform to the different atmosphere created.
From an instrumental point of view, Brewer plays a two-finger-picking, with frequent bass figures close, at times, to the modules of white "Old Time" music; however, perhaps because he learned to play without seeing, he has a very particular way of obtaining chords by hitting the high strings from the bottom up, with the index finger of his right hand. Also surprising are the unusual positions of the left hand, due to the deformation that Brewer has undergone to his little finger.
In general, despite not having a very personal style, Blin Jim tends to "grind" the pieces he proposes, standardizing even very different pieces (such as Jim Jackson's "Gonna Move To Kansas City", "Come Back Baby", "How Long", "Bright Lights, Big City") to his proven performance practice, based on schemes of essential simplicity and immediate usability. The resulting music has also found a very favorable reception for these reasons.
