Interviewer was spot on, listening an staying with Leonard. Thoughtful with the answers he got. Excellent camerawork bringing it all together in soft cohesiveness. Like very much the interviewers smiles about his subject showing how he liked his man. The cigarette holder is fun. Hadnt known he was such a cute guy back in the day. Do remember well listening to his early stuff in the wonderous 60s while at UC Berkeley reveling in all of what we had then.
Leonard here and Leonard at the last two decades are drastic… it shows in his speaking and in his eyes and softening of his face. I’m so happy to know he found peace in the end. LC in London in 2008-2009 was such a treasure. Austin City Limits was another great small concert. ❤🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️
It's always a pleasure to listen to Leonard's soothing voice..discussing such deep matters whilst holding a somewhat calming demeanour. It almost makes you feel reassured in a sense, hearing somebody talk so simply about things but staying poetically meaningful as well. It sustains the authenticity of honest emotion. It was his mother tongue after all. Thank you for uploading this rare treasure.
What a wonderful conversation! Patrick Watson is a contemporary of Leonard's, and a writer, actor, and more himself. He asks penetrating questions, LISTENS to Leonard's responses, and obviously appreciates Leonard's work. Very enlightening! Leonard might have said "true." Thank you, ALBIAS, for finding this and sharing it with us!
Oh! I so enjoyed listening to this conversation. It’s like we get a glimpse into Leonard’s mind heart & soul - why he fashions his lyrics and poems the way he does. And to be able to get really lost in his eyes! Yes! Thank you so much for this upload! ❤❤❤
i always heard it would be bad to meet your hero's but i think i could be right in saying that this man ..Leonard Cohen , would leave you feeling as though you could almost cry when its time to go..
“Events rush in too quickly for me to have a program about it” ~ LC was a person who slowly over time became more open to many aspects of what life had to offer. I believe that he had no artistic program to follow but rather developed his own groove in response to the life he had personally experienced.
“I don’t want to move around much anymore - but that’s because I want to try something big, and I need stable surroundings to be able to really take flight.” That's hard won artistic experience there. It's take me 25 years for me to realise that myself.
Un Léonard Cohen stressé par l'interview mais déjà cette présence puissante et humble à à la fois peut-être parce que conscient de sa fragilité et mal à l'aise avec les masques... We love him so much...
This is analysis of Leonard and his methods of writing and poetry. Leonard gives an honest assessment of his work and he enjoys talking about poetry. Leonard sees the world and he tries to understand his life in the world. He is constantly searching his relationships for understanding.
besides being profound he is also a beautiful man. he practically has all the gifts: persuasive voice, beauty and intelligence. besides being very sexy. lucky and beloved man
the LIGHT in his eyes tells me all I need to know. God was there, even though he didn't fully obey Him. Once a Cohen, always a Cohen. Set apart for God. No wonder he touched many lives...it was his Heavenly Job here on this "broken hallelujah" of a planet... ...we call earth.
Leonard appears more remote, intense, unsure, and self protective here than in his late in life interviews where he appears humourous, more self accepting and content. Im glad he was more comfortable in his skin as he aged. Perhaps he used less drugs and alcohol later in life.
Yes. I've noticed that too. He said as an older man the anxiety he felt in his youth dissipated and he just felt more relaxed. I hope this happens to me too
''I was born in a suit.'' There are many kinds of suits. The suit one dawns at birth earned from original sin. His Just Return to set us free.
Well, Mr. Cohen certainly had the chance to clear up those assumptions, didn’t he? Not sure if he did, or if you think he did, but the opportunity was there. He agreed to do the show, too - don’t forget that!
Surely he isn't 44 in 1980, as suggested. My dad was also born in 1934 and he was 44 when I was born on Feb 9th (edit:) 1978 (two years and a day before this broadcast).
It was broadcast in Feb 1980 but could very well have been filmed months before - I’m guessing before Leonard’s birthday in September 1979 and therefore he was 44 at the time of filming.
Well as he says there are varying degrees of depression sometimes you can't even work he's still able to socialize and give interviews though he may be tired if he was traveling or had some wine the night before a late show etc.
I don’t care for this set up. Notice that the interviewer is sitting slightly above Leonard as you would in an office setting with a client. “ Always make sure you sit slightly higher then the client for a position of power.”
I love him but he is like Nick Cave in that he gets caught up too much in judeo-Christian nonsense. You can add Richard Thompson and others to that list. It’s so silly. There’s no one in the sky watching us. Learn about evolution and stuff. Damn.
I agree with both here. His energy is dull and he seems sad and empty. He hardly smiles nor shows his witty side. But still so insightful. I’d be happy if my mind were just half of his!

I never tire of Leonard Cohen's simple straightforward truth.
"we do have an appetite to worship and I think it's appropriate that we find each other the mystery" wow

This man named Cohen has touched the lives of millions of people!
I have loved Leonard Cohen forever, a most unique and beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing. RIP Leonard.
My greatest HERO. LOVE this guy and his music.❤❤

You said it and said it so well. How can anyone tire of listening to the gentle kindness and brilliance of this special man?
love Leonard... ..then and now...his passing is a big loss to all of us
A major loss indeed.
Has there ever been a more honest man?Thankyou for this interview.

Im glad to hear that Cohen was defending the sacrament of marriage , emphasizing matrimony and the family unit as a pillar of society
i always heard it would be bad to meet your hero's but i think i could
be right in saying that this man ..Leonard Cohen , would leave you feeling as though
you could almost cry when its time to go..
His songs are like jewels his voice is like honey 🍯
'Honey off a furry spoon', one of my favourite sayings and so true of Leonards exquisite voice and manner... Miss him upon this earth...
Voice is like honey? Hmm yeah it’s a good speaking voice I guess.
Cohen respects, not just tolerates this man.

god, he just has to be the love of my life
J'ai partagé avec toi.
Leonard is young and still seeking ... for this moment, which is all there is, as you all-ready know
It's seems more like an interrogation to me than an interview but Leonard is on top of things with honesty and humility.
Thank you gratefully for uploading this! What a guy! He inspires me so
Thanks so much for uploading this.

His thoughts became so much more profound as he aged.

This video has that soft analog tv sound I love for interviews.

Best interview of Lennie I’ve heard. Who is this man who’s asking the questions?
Patrick Watson (based on the title of the video and based on earlier comments)
Leonard appears more remote, intense, unsure, and self protective here than in his late in life interviews where he appears humourous, more self accepting and content. Im glad he was more comfortable in his skin as he aged. Perhaps he used less drugs and alcohol later in life.
Perhaps more

@@edmundpower1250 it was less.
I really wish I grew up with this era of the CBC
best interviewer.
Así son las buenas entrevistas. Hoy día no se profundiza, no se remueve las entrañas, hoy día todo por el show y el reality-show.
The life of the appetite
"joyfully sad" That's our Leonard.
Notice Patrick says "Girls" and Leonard says "Women"? God I miss him!

Too Much Spare Time Product
Who if not Leonard Cohen could have talked about prose poems by Charles Pierre Baudelaire.....
Interviewer has aged badly, Leonard is timeless.
Great hair! Sad eyes :(
This interviewer seems to make a lot of assumptions about Leonard that may or may not be true.
I don’t care for this interviewer. It’s like he’s trying to trip Leonard up! Didn’t happen!
Well, Mr. Cohen certainly had the chance to clear up those assumptions, didn’t he? Not sure if he did, or if you think he did, but the opportunity was there. He agreed to do the show, too - don’t forget that!
He looks like Dustin Hoffman!
He looks like Michael Corelleone aka Al Pacino too!

Lol man do you know how to count? You said your dad was born in 1934, so he would have been 36 in 1970.

He's depressed here. You can see it in his face.
Agreed
Kerpin. It is the interviewer who is depressed here.
Well as he says there are varying degrees of depression sometimes you can't even work he's still able to socialize and give interviews though he may be tired if he was traveling or had some wine the night before a late show etc.
Thoughtful & insightful but Cohen seems always to be waiting for something less technical, more visceral.
You just kinda hang on to listen to his next word
That cigarette holder...
What artist today 019 can give you a verbal concert such as this one.
What artist in the 80s could?
Leoanrd Cohen should’ve just said: “what are you on about?"
Say hello to my little friend
I hate how his hair is perfect and it looks like all he has to do is wake up and it’s good.
Sadness in these grey eyes
He looks a little like Al Pacino
They look pretty similar to each other when both of them were young
YES.. And the interviewer Danny Kaye
Like adult son of Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman!
I don’t care for this set up. Notice that the interviewer is sitting slightly above Leonard as you would in an office setting with a client. “ Always make sure you sit slightly higher then the client for a position of power.”

Is he stoned here?
Why do they have that thing that holds the cigarette?
