I was given a copy of this book when i was 20 and started reading it when it called to me at 31... and it was the searing ray of light i needed. just incredible. Happy trails, Mr. Cohen, wherever you are... this single book is enough of a legacy for anyone.
"[if] you feel you're a soul unemployed"...... this is just one, brief, line from the interview but it illustrates how profoundly poetic Leonard Cohen was - even while in the act of an ordinary conversation with another. We are so blessed to have his presence in our lives and, though I'm deeply saddened by his passing, I'm grateful beyond my ability to express, that his journey brought words and music to the public. Those of us fortunate enough to recognize ourselves in his songs and poetry have been gifted beyond measure. I'm glad so many of us know this.
camabelu e Well, and movingly , said. The Book of Mercy, the book being discussed here, is a work of his paid almost no attention. I hardly saw it mentioned it in the memorial pieces I've read. It's a collection of meditations, prayers, moments of weakness and confusion, and approaches to the divine - the source of being, as Cohen terms it- worth getting hold of and returning to.
Thanks for the kind words. Re 'Book of Mercy'.....you're exactly right. I have a copy and keep it handy. I turn to it often and, particularly over the past month, it has offered me a lot of comfort. 'Book of Longing' is also incredible.
The law that is written on the heart (23:05): "The deepest violation to another man is to disregard or ignore the subtlety of his landscape. Or to believe it is less subtle than yours. It isn't. The basis of any possibility between human beings is the recognition of the subtlety of that landscape. That is what the idea of law is. The idea of law is the limitations that we have to place on our activities and even our thoughts, so that we don't violate the subtlety of another man's landscape. That's what I mean by the law that has been revealed. We know about it. There is everything going now to make us believe it doesn't exist. There's all kind of devices and great powers have marshaled great energies to try to convince us that this subtlety does not exist, but the law has been revealed. You know, if you want to call it the lawmaker or inspiration - or in Jermiah, it says "it will be written on the heart". I believe it is."
Meaningful essentials to survive amidst the harsh challenges, life can bring. 🙏 is key to see the opportunities before us, which were transformed from obstacles. God bless Leonard Cohen's soul ! He taught us to see beyond ourselves.

@Deacon Santana That's an achievement - you must be very proud
Well put
Just another small gem that Cohen has left behind for our consideration...

I believe this as well. In fact, it is one of a very few things that i Know to be true.

I recall when 'Various Positions' was released - I still think of it as being a 'new album' somehow, but I felt great joy.
