- How I Got My Song, Leonard Cohen's speech at the Oct 21, 2011 Prince of Asturias Awards is already available on video uploads, all of which suffer from overdubbing in Spanish that sometimes obscures Cohen's words. In this version, however, all but the first 2-3 minutes of the talk are played from an audio tape with no overdubbing. While that portion of the tape contains ambient noise and some volume and pitch fluctuations, it is significantly easier to understand. I played classical/flamenco for 40 years, I memorized a hundred wonderful pieces but I was nothing & had no talent. BUT listening to Mr. Cohen speak of the guitar brought all of my failures into a light of great success as I listened and knew, in the depth of my soul, just exactly what he meant & felt. He made my 40 years of struggle into a moment of incredible joy. I weep at his passing as I write this.

Yes, he brought deeply and beautifully crafted words and music into my life a long, long time ago. I shall not forget them, and I cannot forget them. I have played and sung for almost sixty years now, and Leonard Cohen has been, and continues to be a deep, yearning emotion in all I write, and all I aspire to be.

Definition of a poet. Perhaps an idea and notes the night before, but no one coukd ad lib what that concept means better than Leonard. I agree with the comment acceptance speech into art - in a few words the poet has conveyed a lifetime of passions. That strength and Mr Cohen's presence is eternal. RIP, thanks for your continued example of a good life. As you said, "not a victory march" but so much more powerful.

The world could use many more like Mr. Cohen. He's not only a great writer and singer, but, more importantly, a deeply elegant human being.
I went to concert by leonard Cohen in brighton UK in 1979 at the dome. A baby was crying so loud it was affecting the performance. Leonard stoppef playing and said in a slow low voice i love to hear a baby cry we thundered with applause. I am now 67 and have never forgotten that magic night RIP.....leonard

It is a trip that you said this. Let me explain.. A song came back into my mind (for whatever reason) today. I thought about it and was kind of pissed that I couldnt remember where I heard it. But for some reason It came to me in my head the name Cohen. I wasnt sure if this was right or not. Well,, I started thinking a little more and then BAMM. I recalled a song from a movie that I liked (had no idea who this was at the time) and Googled it. All I had was a guess at a name. Tried it and POW there it was. Just wanted to let you know that. And somehow we all "remember" names. As I will yours. Much love and respect to ya.
Truly a man who had done his spiritual homework.
The man took his life without revealing anything about himself, and then I cried about someone I never knew, even Mr Cohen's gone now, but I know how he got his Spanish style guitar inspiration.
So many artists take their own life. Not feeling appreciated enough to thrive, but only to survive. Sensitive souls not really equipped to face the suffering of life. And yet what they give, gives life to others.

there is no doubt that we have witnessed one of the world's greatest poet/singers speaking from the heart and taking us all beyond the limits of sincerity.. we are seeing a wonderful oration spoken with such truth and eloquence it brings tears to the eyes.. like Leonard i too wonder who the young Spaniard was.. but all we can do is to thank him for place the maestro's hands on those wonderful chords and for keeping them there for so long...a joy to the world

Yes his speech was deeply moving to me also. It has left me wondering about the mysterious young man who gave him so much inspiration, who was he? why was he so sad?
Unreal. A man with a special kind of integrity. He gives himself very little credit for what he could do with those six chords!
I also tear up every single time I listen to this speech. Specially being myself from Andalusia, the region of Spain Lorca was from and that is well known as the birthplace of flamenco, and being a Cohen's fan, this speech is just priceless. What a poet, what an artist. A Spanish flamenco singer, Enrique Morente, covered Cohen's Take This Waltz, which was based on a poem by Federico García Lorca, the poet he talks about in this speech. Later there have been more covers of this song. You can find them on UA-cam. It is a beautiful story of mutual inspiration (Lorca-Cohen-Morente... others).
I miss him, and after watching and hearing this I miss him all the more. He understood the human condition, and he understood it as all do who understand the human condition, through his own personal experience and especially through his own suffering.
I first heard of Leonard Cohen when I went down to work in Butlins holiday camp in Skegness in England. A beautifull young English girl told me I had to listen to Susanne. And then I heard it.
And after I had the honour of seeing him in Greens Playhouse in Glasgow. And I've loved him since then and I still love him to this very day.
Butlins Skegness? That brings back childhood memories. Good old Skeggy.

By 8:00 I began crying because I knew that this speech was about gratitude. One of the sweetest geniuses of our era. And he once described how he labored over every single word, sometimes spending a week or more to get just one line of lyrics exactly ....perfect. And boy did he ever! I flunked my first semester of college in 1967 because I just drove to the school parking lot every day, parked my VW camper, took out my 12-string, sat in the back, and played Suzanne all day long, with a little bit of Simon and Garfunkel mixed in. I was mesmerized by Leonard Cohen's haunting music and lyrics and Physics 101 just didn't stand a chance. And besides...it was the Summer of Love...

I love two particular quotes from his songs. One was “I have studied the religions of this world....but cheerfulness kept breaking through” and the other one was “There is a crack, a crack in everything....that’s how the light gets in”. Every line of most his songs causes me to stop and meditate on his wisdom. His London concert was the best ever...the musicians were perfectly in sync with him, as was his choir. I loved the beginning of his concert when he addressed the audience thanking them for coming, saying “Most of you will have suffered geographical and financial inconvenience”.

Spanish royalty is modern compared to the 4 thousand year lineage of Leonard Cohen. He was a male line descendant of the Prophet Aaron and had a birth right to the office of High Priest. The Cohen lineage is at least a thousand years older than the oldest royal line in the world, that of the Crysanthemum Throne of Japan.

Poetic Wisdom never dies..!!
Such an abundance of grace evident in this man, in his manner and speech. You can see how his story takes hold of his audience; this is no ordinary acceptance speech. He takes pieces of his life, revealing his deeply held sense of connection with Spain, laying them out before his audience with honesty and simplicity. He wants them to know how and why he holds 'this soil' in such 'esteem'.
Spain, at the time of Cohen's speech, was in the midst of a devastating financial crises, many of it's young people leaving to find work outside the country, the country and its people mocked for its financial impropriety, but Cohen reminds them that "just as a man is more than his identity card, a country is more than its credit rating"; he reminds them of the enduring depth of their culture.
It is ironic that in receiving an award he manages, with consummate grace, to turn things around so beautifully, laying the real honours at their feet so convincingly and sincerely. So beautiful and touching as this man is, we can all share a gratitude that he found there the inspiration which led him on his path in life.

Oh Leonard! I was 60 two days ago and I have listened to you since buying a 5 track audio cassette from a cut price basket in the early eighties and was mesmerised. My friends and family laughed at my enthusiasm for you and your work, we're all crying now, thank you for all the poetry, music and joy you have given me since! Indeed, truly an evolved soul, one of the world's greatest poets/songwriters. Leonard Cohen knows how, with humble graciousness and tender truth, to caress the soul of an entire nation. How could Spaniards not feel deeply loved and affirmed with his grateful tribute? Leonard Cohen is "rightly" a citizen of the world, & I must say how proud I feel that he's also a "Canadian citizen."
