Absolutely brilliant! Really interesting hour of discussion. I have just watched a re-run of Extras and reminded myself of how great it was. So well written and unique in so many ways.
One of the few entertainers who's as funny unscripted as he is when he's written something. He's an absolute genius when it comes to writing, particularly the timing. Gervais is fantastic too, and in my opinion, plays the character better than Steve does (his stand-up), but there's no way the office would have taken off if one didn't have the other. Karl on the other hand....easily the funniest bloke on the planet, and all totally unintentional
@Queenie QC You can tell how hard Steve worked at comedy. He's obviously got a natural talent for it. But it's clear he's really studied comedians and writers.
The Office (both UK & USA) was amazingly one of the best of it genre that I have ever seen. As Stephen said, they don’t always translate well, and the irony in the USA version was so surprising given that we don’t think they get it. I have watched both versions several times and I feel qualified to say it because of that fact and also I have seen a LOT of comedy given I am 70, not 16 as most commenters on here seem to be. ( side note…Mrs. Brown’s Boys is the unfunniest…it depends on offensive language to get laughs.)
In a design job I had many years ago, the boss looked exactly like David Brent but it was his second in command that acted exactly like David Brent - no one really like that dude but did like the boss. Stephen Merchant is one of my favourite comedic writers. Love both Hello Ladies, and The Outlaws, as well as The Office, and Extras (which I think is simply brilliant - they're all brilliant, actually).
I was hoping someone would ask about karls new series sick of it and what his thoughts were. It was still a great interview though thank you for inviting him

He’s abhorrently underrated. Fantastic mind, well spoken, funny as hell. XFM!
What a tough crowd. He made me laugh a lot but the room over there is so quiet!
They're all too clever.
I’d assume they’re pretty uptight at Oxford. Stiff upper lip and all that.
The audio is edited to remove some such sounds.
I'm so happy to see all these quotes, I thought I was the only one still listening!
“If we’re gonna start totting up”
Could listen to him talk all day, this Q&A was long overdue.
One of the funniest men to grace the world. Really humble and down to earth as well, much prefer him to Ricky.
24:51 - She just said "An idiot abroad" was tongue in cheek and offensive. Utter bollocks.
The amount of XFM/Karl Pilkington references here is brilliant.
Mr and Mrs Merchant, you’ve given birth to a basketball player.
Does anyone remember the Ken Dod story. The first time he tells it he’s the one saying it, and then the next time he tells it as his dads perspective
Absolutely brilliant! Really interesting hour of discussion. I have just watched a re-run of Extras and reminded myself of how great it was. So well written and unique in so many ways.
Good to see the post office alien from Men in Black II getting a Q&A at Oxford University.
Would kill for Ricky Steve and Karl to be in a room again talking absolute tripe 😩❤️😂
Always loved Steve's stories on the podcast.
Scrimpton
There needs to be a reunion, all three of them need to come back with a bang.
He could have been your brother steve
YES HE IS A BIT ODD LOOKING BUT VERY HUMBLE AND YOUTHFUL. HE LOOKS YOUNGER NOW THAN ELVIS DID AT DEATH. MY HERO
I was hoping someone would ask about karls new series sick of it and what his thoughts were. It was still a great interview though thank you for inviting him
